Quicktime is playing up

I've updated both my iTunes and Quicktime today to the most recent of each, but when I try to play films in iTunes, it's still bringing up the message telling me to install Quicktime.
Any helpers?
I have Windows 7.

Many thanks. So that's suggesting something going wrong more on the iTunes side of things.
Let's try an experiment. I'd like to try doing a "Run as administrator" on your iTunes.
Quit iTunes first.
In Computer, open Local Disk C: or whichever drive you have your program files installed on.
If you have a 32-bit version of Windows, open the "Program Files" folder.
If you have a 64-bit version of Windows, Open the "Program files (x86)" folder.
Open the "iTunes" folder.
Right-click on the iTunes.exe file and select "run as administrator".
Try playing some of the content that was not playing before ... does it play without the message?

  • Why does the new Quicktime NOT play my old MOV files?

    Hi Folks.
I'm using the lasted updated Yosemite on a 3-year old iMac.
Back in my early iMac days (3 years ago), I imported my camcorder's AVCHD files
into iMove or Final Cut Express and converted them to Quicktime MOV files.
Turns out they were rendered by Apple or Final Cut into MOV files using the
Apple Intermediate codec.  I had no choice over this.
Until I upgraded to Yosemite, I was able to preview any of these movies
very easily in the Finder.  Simply highlight the movie, press the spacebar,
and it opens, in a real-time, real-size screen, with a simple play-pause button
in the progress bar at the bottom.  Never had a problem with any previous
    Mac OS.
Now when I click on the file in the finder, instead of a movie preview, I get a
big, silent QT "Mov" icon that just sits there looking silly.
I double click it to open it up in Quicktime, and it attempts to go through this
lengthy conversion process, taking at least as long as the movie is in minutes,
then asking me if I want to save this new "converted" version.
Fortunately, I have an old version of Quicktime 7 on my Mac, and QT 7 opens it
and plays it no problem.  No "conversion" necessary.  No cumbersome and
space-hogging needs to create a "cloned" copy, just so the new, lame version
    of Quicktime can play it.
What's up, Apple?  AIC was YOUR codec that YOUR SOFTWARE chose to
transcode into.  Now, your new Quicktime does NOT support this codec?
And your old version does?  And why might THAT be?
Really, this is so elementary.  This is not rocket science.  Just like JPG images
not displaying properly in Mac Mail now.  It begs the question "why" ...?
I mean, for the elementary preview abilities that always made Mac such a
friendly computer ... *uh* ... where is that?
And here we go, wasting hours of time, looking for fixes that should not
    have to be "fixed"...
Did I miss something?  Or did you?

Aeclay: here's a couple of ideas.  And an answer to your earlier post.
Basically two options to work with here:
Store the files as native AVCHD files... OR
    Convert the files to Quicktime
I keep two archives of my AVCHD recordings, partly for backup, and partly for Sony's ability to archive nicely in it's own native format on it's PC-friendly utility called "PMB".  (came wtih both my NEX and ALPHA cameras).   I have an old PC that I use for my complete archive; Sony's PMB utility works only on PC's and will do a good job both of archiving, providing a thumbnail database, and re-writing your choice to removable media in it's typical Sony hierarchy.
If you've only got Mac's, you can still archive your AVCHD recordings; copy them to folders named or organized to your own spec's.   AVCHD is a high-quality compression format, and they'll take up way less disk space than converted Quicktime MOV files.   You can open and play all AVCHD movies quite easily with VLC player.
The only extra trick to be aware of here is this.  The only reason you would need to preserve the intact "sony" folders (named "AVCHD" / "BMDV" etc) is is you were using Adobe Premiere as a video editor.  Somehow, it needs the hierarchical folder stuff in place to properly index the files.  Not mandatory, but helpful if  you are a Premiere user.  Otherwise, forget the weird "package" folders; just right-click (ctrl-click) on them, choose "view package contents" and MOVE the MTS files out of the Sony hierarchy for permanent storage.  Use VLC player to open and view them.
From that point on,  you have control over how you manage the files and what intermediate or end-user format you convert them to for your own use.
I'm not clear on your other question about the files that add the word "converted" on.  Of course Mac will convert to Quicktime MOV files.  Not sure what codec they're using now, likely H.264.  Anyway, don't bother converting.  It'll take up a lot of time and waste a lot of disk space.
ps. I just found this free utility on the internet.  It's called "MTS CONVERTER". I have not tried it, but it claims to be able to convert all AVCHD files to various useable formats.
Good luck!  (and happy Valentine's Day!)

  • Quicktime not playing at double speed

When I try to open any mp3 file in QuickTime and play it at 2x speed, it goes silent.  Prior to the iTunes 12.2 update/Yosemite Recovery Update 1.0/OS X 10.10.3 update, this wasn't an issue.
QuickTime is currently running on ver 10.4
I'm running on a Macbook Air with a 1.4 Ghz processor intel core i5 with 4 GB 1600 MHz DDR3 with 50 GB of memory left.
    Any help.

  • Quicktime not playing SMIL mime type

I was trying to stream some audio of file type .smil. The computer in question did not have Real Player installed, so the finder started a QuickTime Player to play the file. The player failed to load and play the file. In fact, when the file in question was dragged to the player, it wasn't recognized.
In the QuickTime Prefs, Advanced, Mime Types, SMIL 1.0 was unchecked. I checked it, but the QuickTime Player's behavior didn't change.
Is it the case that another player, such as RealPlayer, must be installed to play those files? Or is there a way to get QuickTime to play them? Or ... ?
Mac Mini   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

No, my question hasn't really been answered ... but it's been sort of addressed in another forum, kind of. Might as well get this question off the board.

  • Quicktime not playing after publishing page

I have a 13MB .mov quicktime which plays fine not only in iWeb and on its own, but plays when I put it loose in the Site folder and direct the browser to it, however when I add it to my site via iWeb and then publish, it shows up with a question mark over the quicktime. All my other movies with the same format play just fine, except for this one:
    http://web.mac.com/jamin.duncan/iWeb/Site/BestBuy_Holiday4.html
if you remove the /BestBuy_Holiday4.html which is the iWeb html file and add /BBY_Pickup.mov it will play fine.
It's driving me crazy. Any ideas?
    Thanks.

I think my problem may be related.
I have all the latest versions of everything.
I used iWeb to create and publish my site, took a week of trying with repetitive errors, finally successful.
However, some of the videos on my website only show a big blue "Q" with a question mark inside, and cannot play the video. The other videos show a "TV screen" with the beginning of the video displayed, I can click play and they play. But the problem of some videos just showing the "Q" confuses me. Thoughts?
I read the suggestion to look inside the Media folder to see if the movie file is there, but I don't know what this si or where to find it!

  • Quicktime not playing any videos!

So here's the issue. Quicktime just isn't playing videos. Used to, suddenly stopped working. I'll open a video file, QT will launch, the window for the video comes up, but all i get is black screen, play icon switches to pause icon for about a second, then it goes back into a paused mode. Clicking play again does nothing. Video works fine on VLC, and quicktime video is playing fine in browsers (on Apple site, for example). What gives? No software updates coming up for QT.

Doesn't Quicktime automatically covert and play videos?
Not for formats it doesn't support, no. While QuickTime can play some AVI-format videos (AVI is just a container format and may use any number of different codecs), it can by no means play all of them, and XVID is not a supported codec in QuickTime. I'm not aware of any XVID plugin for QuickTime for Windows available at this time (the XVID consortium says that they're working on QT support, but no details have been made available as to timeframe), so you'll probably need to use some other player such as VLC Media Player to play your XVID AVI content.

  • Quicktime Wont Play MPG Files

    Hi,
Just bought my first Mac - loving it. Only issue I have so far is that I have a load of video camera clips with an .mpg extension, which I copied onto an external drive when I had my PC. Now when I come to play these files, it comes up with "The movie xxxxxx.mpg can't be opened. You may need to install additional software to open this type of file.
Wherever I look, it says Quicktime will play .mpg files, so I can't understand why they wont work. All the photo's on the same drive have gone into iPhoto no problem. When I go onto "tell me more" it starts going on about downloading additional media support. Not sure if I'm missing something simple!
    Please help!
    Thanks,
    Darran.

Yea...I did this when I got my Mac for Christmas 2009. I can watch the videos no problem...WITHOUT SOUND! If I use VLC everything works right, but I want to be able to burn the videos to DVD to watch somewhere else too. I bought a Mac because this was supposed to be easier...NOT!
Thinking of going back to a PC. At least everyone knows they have issues.

I have an .avi file Quicktime is refusing to play, yet the information says Quicktime does play .avi files. Does anyone know what the problem is?

AVI is a legacy file container originated by Microsoft back in 1992 and which has not been officially supported for more than a decade. Like the container, many of the codecs commonly used to create AVI content are also "legacy" compression formats most often supported on PC/Windows platforms. In fact, some codecs have never been transcoded for Mac use. Of those that have, many never made the transition to Mac OS X or the transition to Intel-based platforms. Those codecs that are still supported on the Mac can normally be found in the avi to quicktime converter available as an online download. While some common AVI compression formats may be supported by the QT X Player app, QT 7 currently provides a more compatible AVI playback environment for most "legacy" compression formats. If the codec(s) used in your AVI files are not supported by the avi to quicktime converter for QT use, you can try the VLC media player which may still support more esoteric compression formats. If  VLC does not support the files, the normal approach is to discover which specific audio and/or video codecs were used to create the file and perform an Internet search to see if a compatible Mac component is available for download.

  • Quicktime wont play my movie

quicktime wont play my video cd's. when i drag and drop... it says there is an error opening it up.

Quicktime has it's limitations and can't, natively, play certain video formats.
Try VLC.  It should be able to play anything you throw at it.

  • Plug-in for Quicktime to play XDCam?

I'm working in XDCAM (with the Sony EX3 at 1080p 24fps). I want to deliver my current clients a Quicktime they can play directly from a new Mac PowerBook. I notice they can play a ProRes version without having anything additional installed; but when we tried an XDCAM version, no go.
Is there an easy way for them to get a plug-in that will allow Quicktime to play the XDCAM movie file format without having FCP installed on their laptop?
ProRes is great, but it's a rather large file for their laptop.
    All ears,

You can't with the QT X Player app. The "Play sound in the frontmost player only" and "Play sound when application is in the background" are "Preference" options. Since the QT X Player has no preference panel, you cannot access these options with it. You can however, download and install the QT 7 v7.6.6 Player app which is compatible with Mountain Lion. In fact, both players can be installed/used simultaneously on the same system.

  • Quicktime not playing avi

    hi
i'm using Lion (the latest version as downloaded in February 2012) and QUicktime doesnt play any .avi files. ever since i got my mac book pro a few weeks its never actually played avi files.
    any help??

Download and install Perian from  http://perian.org/
You should read this support page  http://perian.org/#support   in case you need to delete older codecs.  In Macintosh HD/Library/Quicktime/ delete any files relating to DivX (Perian already has them), particularly any DivX extension to Safari. However it should be noted that Perian is not an internet plugin and will not play DivX files imbedded on a website. For that you will need the DivX Player browser plugin available from  http://www.divx.com/en/software/mac

  • Getting Automator or AppleScript to start up QuickTime and play a radio sta

I am new to Automator and have never tried AppleScript.
I would like my Mac to start up and play a radio station. I have been successful in getting the link to work in QuickTime or play directly in Safari. However, when I try to use Automator to start QuickTime and play the link, uh, nothing happens. When I save the workflow to the desktop and click on it, it opens up Automator.
I would have expected that running the workflow would open up QuickTime and then load the link and play it.
I am missing something here and getting frustrated with the documentation.
I could use AppleScript, but know nothing about it and have not been able to find a already made AppleScript online.

When I save the workflow to the desktop and click on it, it opens up Automator.
It would appear that you're saving the workflow as a workflow rather than saving it as an application. In Automator's Save dialog, look for the File Format drop-down and select Application instead.
Beyond that, without knowing the stream's URL or the stream's referring web page it would be difficult to say with certainty what the best approach might be. If you could post the URL that would help. A few questions that come to mind: Is the radio station a live streaming AM or FM station? A podcast? What file format is used? Does a .qtl file or some other file get downloaded to your desktop when you click on the "listen live" link from the referring radio station's web page?
For example, when I click on "Click to listen with Quicktime" at kgoam810.com a listenlive.qtl file is downloaded to my desktop. In this case the Automator workflow would be easy to set up, using these two Finder library actions:
    1) *Get Specified Finder Items* -- click on the "+" sign, navigate to the listenlive.qtl file and select it.
    2) *Open Finder Items* -- set it to open with the default application.
Save the workflow as an application and add to your Login Items.
If no file is downloaded and you have only the stream's URL, you may be able to cobble together a workflow which makes use of a GUI type applescript. I've had success using the following actions:
    1) *Get Specified Text* -- from Automator's TextEdit library. Simply type in or paste the URL into the text box.
    2) *Copy to Clipboard* -- from Automator's System library.
    3) *Run AppleScript* -- from the Automator library. The script shown below has worked for me. Copy the code and paste it into the Run AppleScript box, overwriting what's pre-populated there:
    *on run {input, parameters}*
    *tell application "QuickTime Player"*
    activate
    *tell application "System Events"*
    *tell process "QuickTime Player"*
    *keystroke "u" using command down*
    *keystroke "v" using command down*
    *delay 1*
    *keystroke return*
    *end tell*
    *end tell*
    *end tell*
    *return input*
    *end run*
Compile the script by clicking on the hammer icon in the Run AppleScript box and save the workflow as an application. Add it to your Login Items.
Note that as a GUI applescript is being used here, you should have "Enable access for assistive devices" checked under System Preferences > Universal Access. Also, under the QuickTime Player's Preferences > Other, make sure that "Show Content Guide automatically" is unchecked.
Your mileage may vary... Good luck!

  • Can't get iTunes or quicktime to play mp4 or mp3, only static and noise.

Since upgrading past iTunes 7.4, I haven't regularly been able to play mp3 or mp4 files. The actions from the help page: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303706
worked for a while but now nothing seems to work. I can sometimes reset everything so that quicktime can play the files but once you open iTunes, I'm done.
    Help...

Same problem here. Both iTunes and Quicktime wont open up anymore. Quicktime started off by saying "buffer underun problem, cannot open executable file." or something similar. So I removed it, and installed the newest version. Now BOTH iTunes and Quicktime say there is a problem with the program and I will be notified if there is a solution.
