QuickTime logo with a question mark on it

Some websites i go to show a picture or video instead a faint quicktime logo with a question mark shows up. How do I get rid of it and show the picture or video instead?

I find it interesting that this is clearly a topic of interest since 450 people have clicked on it---significantly more than the other questions on this page---and yet, NO ANSWER.
I have not been able to download Apple trailers. For instance, just went to a link to download the trailer for You Kill Me:
http://www.apple.com/trailers/independent/youkillme/
Click on Medium size for the screen, so I go here:
http://www.apple.com/trailers/independent/youkillme/medium.html
A little button says you have to have version 7 of Quicktime which I keep downloading, since I keep trying to see trailers.
Although I know I've downloaded this software in the past, I'm getting the crazy Quicktime Q with a question mark.
So I go so far as to download Quicktime 7, yet again, then Restart. Try the movie. Still get the question mark in the Q.
What is up with this??????

  • QuickTime logo with a question mark

Apologies if this is answered somewhere else, but I couldn't find the exact problem and I'm also very new at this.
On certain web pages I get a quick time logo with a question mark over it appearing, that seems to indicate some kind of missing plug-in (though I may be wrong about this). It's only started happening recently, but I can't pinpoint why. I have Flip4Mac, Quick Time Pro and the latest (I think) Flash Player installed. It means that I cannot read certain pages or see certain elements of pages. As an example, I tried to visit 'www.menierchocolatefactory.com/index2.asp', but just got a big QuickTime logo with question mark. I downloaded their suggested plug-in, but to no avail.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks.

Not sure what resets these settings. Glad the solution was one of the easier paths.
Thanks for the and Aloha from Big Island.

i accidentally pushed the power button of my macbookpro... it restarted but doesnt open... what appears now is a flashing FOLDER logo with a QUESTION MARK on it.. can someboby help me to fix this?

(Assuming you don't have a firmware boot lock set)
    First easy step...
    1. Shut down the computer if it's on (hold the power button down... until it shuts off)
    2. Press the power button
    3. Immediately press AND hold the Option key ASAP
Hold until drive option images appear in a single row across the screen. Typically most people running 10.7 or 10.8 will see 2 drive options to boot from: the main volume they usually boot from, and a recovery volume. If your main volume pops up. Use the cursor or arrow keys to highlight/select the main volume and press enter. That should boot your main volume. Let me know what you get from this point... I'll give you more as you go along.

  • Quicktime Icon with a Question Mark

I've been using quicktime for years and now when I go to some sites or try to download items I'll get the quicktime icon with a question mark in it. What is that and how do I fix it?

    I've been using
quicktime for years and now when I go to some sites
or try to download items I'll get the quicktime icon
with a question mark in it. What is that and how do I
fix it?The most common problem is
Flash. If you do not have the current free Adobe
Flash Player software installed, download and install
it. Once installed, you must tell the browser plug-in
player to ignore the built-in QT Flash software
(which only handles Flash 5 and below) and use the
newly installed software instead. To do this, open
the "QqickTime Preferences > Advanced > MIMI Settings
Misc." area and ensure the "Flash Media" option is
    deselected.
    Hi,
I'm experiencing the very same problem and I was indeed adviced to install adobe flash player; it didn't work. I tried adjusting the quicktime settings, but when I go to MIME Setting, I simply get this completely blank window...Any ideas?
    Thanks!

  • Quicktime symbol with a question mark????

i cant view anything that is supported by quicktime on the web including simple animations. in everythings place that used to be a movie, etc is now the quicktime symbol with a questiion mark in it. what should i do?

The problem, according to Apple Techs I spoke to today, is Safari, not QuickTime:
I created a podcast in GarageBand back in October 2006 and published it to iTunes as well as my .Mac site via iWeb. All worked fine until a few months ago when I started getting the blue QuickTime 'Q' and a question mark each time I tried to download it from the web site. QuickTime error message said I needed the latest update - which I already had. I tried accessing it from a Mac in an Apple Store and got the same message. But several friends - PC users - told me they had no problem downloading the QuickTime video from my web site. And other Mac users had no problems downloading the podcast from iTunes. I asked an associate in the Apple Store and he downloaded Firefox on to one of their Macs and the QuickTime video opened with no problem from the web site. The original file on my Mac opened up fine when I opened it in QuickTime independently of Safari.
I called Apple Tech Support and they got the same results when opening from various sources. The problem "appears to be Codec related but in Safari recognizing the plugin."
Apple called back today (07/09/07) and told me today the problem has been recognized by Engineering and they are working on an update for Safari to fix the problem.

  • Quicktime logo continually appearing with a question mark

Recently various pages viewed with Safari (and Firefox) are not displaying correctly and a Quicktime logo with a question mark is being shown. I thought I had perhaps erased a codec of some sort but I cannot solve the problem. I cannot view any flash animations, movies within web pages etc.
    Help!!!

The Quicktime logo with a question mark refers to Flash video.
These are the downloads and the settings you need in order to view/hear pretty much everything: The setup described below has proved repeatedly successful on both PPC and Intel macs, but nothing in life carries a guarantee!
Assuming you already run OS 10.4.9 or above and have Quicktime 7.2, and are using Safari 2 or 3, download and install (or re-install even if you already had them) the latest versions, suitable for your flavor of Mac, of:
    RealPlayer from http://uk.real.com/player/
Flip4Mac WMV Player from http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/player/wmcomponents.mspx (Windows Media Player for the Mac is no longer supported, even by Microsoft)
    Perian from http://perian.org/
    Adobe FlashPlayer from http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/download/download.cgi?P1ProdVersion=ShockwaveFlash
In Quicktime Preferences, under advanced, UNcheck Enable Flash, and under Mime settings/Miscellananeous only check Quicktime HTML (QHTM).
In Macintosh HD/Library/Quicktime/ delete any files relating to DivX (Perian already has them).
    Now repair permissions and restart.
The world should now be your oyster!
You should also have the free VLC Player from http://www.videolan.org/ in your armory, as this plays almost anything that DVD Player might not.

  • Quicktime comes up with a Question mark?

My itunes work and my music can play however when i go to certain websites, images and movies come up as the quicktime logo with a question mark in the middle. I have all the updates and dont know why it wont show or play images, movies or games.

Is this on your Dell or on a Mac?
If it's a Mac I'd repair the permissions and see if that didn't cure it. If it doesn't.....
Download Quicktime again and reinstall...which will probably work on the Dell also.

  • Quicktime 7.2 - The Question Mark Question

Yes I know there are numerous posts with this same issue and I believe me have read them all. I've patiently followed every tip I've read in many discussions. Reinstalled Quicktime. Installed Flash 9 Upgrade. Changed Quicktime settings (unchecked enable flash, unchecked Flash Media under MIME settings). Trashed Quicktime preferences. Etc...
However in Safari, on upon trying to open any movie trailer on the Quicktime web site
    http://www.apple.com/trailers/
or even watch the iLife 08 guided tour
    http://www.apple.com/ilife/guidedtour/small.html
I get a Quicktime logo with a question mark. In Firefox (which I've also reinstalled) it quits unexpectedly when trying to open a movie trailer.
In my own experiments, I've opened another admin account on my computer and when I log in there, everything works fine. You say "well just use that account then", that would mean me having to transfer all my files to the other account which I don't want to do unless someone has a really quick way to do so.
Also, in checking the system preferences for Quicktime under both accounts, I don't see any difference. Both accounts are accessing the same applications from the root level Applications folder, so why does it work in one account and not the other? Someone help, as I don't think I can read another 10 page discussion on this. Thanks in advance.

    doval66 & teeray,
    To The Apple Discussion Boards!
Both of you are buried in someone elses ANSWERED thread. Therefore, I strongly suggest that you both start a new topic about your issue so it can receive more focused attention.
However, in the meantime both should do the following before reposting:
At the top right of this site you will see Search Discussions.
In the blank search window w/the magnifying glass in the left corner type Quicktime and question mark.
You will then find several troubleshooting solutions pertaining to your issue for you to try out.
To teeray: I also use FF. However, you do not indicate which version you are using. Make sure you have the latest versions of Adobe Flash Player Software
    Good luck both of you!

  • Audio: Quicktime Logo with Question Mark Appears

When attempting to listen to an audio file linked on a web page, I get a new screen with the Quicktime logo superimposed by a question mark and a dialogue box offering to take me to a page of Quicktime components. (http://www.apple.com/quicktime/resources/components.html?os=OSX&ctype=73646563&c subtype=6d730022) And then it just leaves me there with no guidance. What components are the ones I need to play this audio clip? This page, or the script (?) that kicks in when I attempt to play an audio file that needs additional components, is so frustrating. I wish it told me what component is missing. I have read thru the descriptions and downloaded some of the components that seem like they might have something to do with playing an audio file, but still, the file does not play, still the **** logo with the question mark. I have QT 7.5 on a brand new iMac. I have played audio files just previously on the same website. Anybody have any advice on what component is needed or how I find that out?

Hmmm, that didn't help. As I continue through the pages of the website, I find that it is only one audio clip that is not working so far. BTW, this website seems super-antiquated and badly put together, so perhaps it's a problem with the website.

  • Quicktime movies won't play - Displays quicktime logo with question mark

    Hello,
I've searched the forums and haven't found a solution so I decided to straight out ask. I can no longer view quicktime clips (Apple movie trailers) in safari. The box comes up to play but then just displays the Quicktime "Q" with a question mark over it. I've checked the installed plug-ins from the help menu and it does show quicktime. This used to work fine so I'm not sure what happened. I cleared my history recently but don't think that would affect it. Also, everything runs fine when using Firefox. Thanks in advance for any help.

    HI,
*"Also, everything runs fine when using Firefox. "*
Since it's working in Firefox, Try Safari maintenance...
From the Safari Menu Bar, click Safari / Empty Cache. When you are done with that...
From the Safari Menu Bar, click Safari / Reset Safari. Select the top 5 buttons and click Reset.
Go here for trouble shooting 3rd party plugins or input managers which might be causing the problem.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1594
Since you are running Snow Leopard, make sure Safari is running in 32-bit mode, not 64. Right or control click the Safari icon in the Applications folder, then click: Get Info In the Get Info window click the black disclosure triangle next to General so it faces down. Select 32 bit mode. Also, (in that same window) *make sure Safari is NOT running in Rosetta.*
Web pages now include a small icon or 'favicon' which is visible in the address bar and next to bookmarks. These icons take up disk space and slow Safari down. It is possible to erase the icons from your computer and start fresh. *To delete Safari's icon cache Go to ~/Library/Safari/ and webpageIcons.db to the Trash.
    Restart your Mac.
If nothing above helps, go to the Safari Menu Bar, click Safari/Preferences. Make note of all the preferences under each tab. Quit Safari. Now go to ~/Library/Preferences and move this file com.apple.safari.plist to the Desktop. Relaunch Safari. If it's a successful launch, then that .plist file needs to be moved to the Trash. Relaunch Safari.

  • Audio and video files dont play on wiki only a qicktime icon with a question mark appears

I have many users on my server who upload podcasts, but the problem is that the audio file they upload doesnt always play. Only a quicktime icon with a question mark appears. What is also very strange is when you refresh the page usually the file will play and it will work on a Mac but then sometimes not on a PC, and the files always play without a problem on iPads and iPhones.
The icon looks something like this. PLEASE HELP!

The same thing happened to me last night, except for with video.  Playing videos used to work fine on all operating systems.  Now it will work on Windows and iPhone/iPad but only some videos work on my Macs.  After searching for hours here is what I found:
    1. Go to Safari preferences, Security Tab and uncheck "Enable Plug-ins".  When I tried to play video after doing this the Quicktime question mark went away but the video didn't play, it just turned into background color and I can't even right click on it.
    2. Run Safari in 32-bit mode.  Locate the Safari file in your Applications folder.  Right click it and click Get Info.  Check the "Run in 32-bit Mode" box.  Restart safari.  This did nothing for me.
    3. Try a different web browser.  I tried Safari, Chrome, Firefox and Opera.  They all do the same thing.
    4. As for codecs, I updated then reinstalled Flash, DivX and Flip4Mac.  Still doesn't work on Macs.
I know it's not a problem with the server because it works on Windows and mobile devices.  Another weird thing is certain .mp4 videos work fine but some won't.  I re-uploaded them and made sure the video worked on the server and the file is fine.  All regular websites work fine: Youtube, Apple, etc.
My only guess, since this suddenly happened on all my Macs, is that there was some update that caused this.  All help is appreciated.

  • Quicktime logo with question mark appears instead of flash content

since updating my system yesterday to OS x 10.4.11 i have been unable to view flash content with _all browsers_. *Quicktime logo with question mark* appears instead. Spent 4 hours trying every fix suggested by Mac forums worldwide - with no result. Took the computer to the apple store where they actually took 60 euros off me for NOT fixing the problem. Still cannot view any flash content. Any help would be appreciated

These are the downloads and the settings you need in order to view/hear pretty much everything that the net can throw at you: The setup described below has proved repeatedly successful on both PPC and Intel macs, but nothing in life carries a guarantee!
It is known to work in the great majority of cases with Safari 3.0.4, QT 7.3 and OS 10.4.11.
Assuming you already run Tiger versions OS 10.4.9 or above (this has not yet been verified with Leopard) and have Quicktime 7.2 or above, and are using Safari 2 or 3, download and install (or re-install even if you already had them) the latest versions, suitable for your flavor of Mac, of:
    RealPlayer 10 for Mac from http://forms.real.com/real/player/blackjack.html?platform2=Mac%20OS%20X&product= RealPlayer%2010&proc=g3&lang=&show_list=0&src=macjack
Flip4Mac WMV Player from http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/player/wmcomponents.mspx (Windows Media Player for the Mac is no longer supported, even by Microsoft)
    Perian from http://perian.org/
    Adobe FlashPlayer from http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/download/download.cgi?P1ProdVersion=ShockwaveFlash
(You can check here: http://www.adobe.com/products/flash/about/ to see which version you should install for your Mac and OS.)
In Quicktime Preferences, under advanced, UNcheck Enable Flash, and under Mime settings/Miscellananeous only check Quicktime HTML (QHTM).
In Macintosh HD/Library/Quicktime/ delete any files relating to DivX (Perian already has them).
Now go to Safari Preferences/Security, and tick the boxes under Web Content (all 4 of them).
Lastly open Audio Midi Setup (which you will find in the Utilities Folder of your Applications Folder) and click on Audio Devices. Make sure that both Audio Input and Audio Output, under Format, are set to 44100 Hz.
Important: Now repair permissions and restart.
The world should now be your oyster!

  • I have a older intel MacBook pro, now when I try to start up instead of the apple logo I see a file folder with a question mark. Need some help please.

I have a first gen MacBook pro with intel chip. All of a sudden when I try to start up instead of the apple logo I see a file folder with a question mark. Phone support wasn't much help since it is a older machine. It's either a software issue or the hard drive went. Any ideas on how to fix if it's a software issue would be appreciated. Thanks a lot.

Thanks I tried that and when I click repair it tells me

    Invalid b-free node size
    Volume check failed
