Quicktime Media Server

I was wondering why no one talks about using QuickTime media server. All I see is folks talking about are XBMC and Plex.
Is there an issue with the QuickTime Media server? My purpose for buying the Mac Mini is to use the computer both as a server ans a HTPC.

The QuickTime Streaming Server (QTSS) feature was deprecated and removed from OS X Server a while back, so you'll have to get Darwin Streaming Server (DSS) working (there were reportedly issues with that at 10.7 and the project doesn't seem to be active), or install XBMC or Plex, or use HTTP live s[t]reaming, or maybe something like El Gato EyeTV software will suffice for your requirements.

  • QuickTime Streaming Server Media Directory

    Does anyone know if QuickTime Streaming Server can use a network attached storage device (like another Xserve hosting an Xraid) as it's media directory? I have gotten this to work once, but never again. Server Admin does not seem to let you select anything except local drives for the location of the media directory. ????

    I've tried doing the same and never got it working... Not even once. I'd be curious to know how you got it working that one time. I've never heard of anyone getting this to work.
    My suggestion is to setup the other XServe with the XRAID as your QTSS or move the XRAID to your QTSS box.

  • QT Broadcasting through media server question

    Hey all,
    My question is this: does anyone know how (if its even possible) to use QT Broadcaster on MANUAL UNICAST to webcast to users connecting to a media server?
    for instance: G5 ---> media server <----user
    <----user
    <----user etc.
    I have been trying to set up the webcast as such: creating a manual unicast .sdp with the IP address of the media server contained within. upload the .sdp to the media server where the users will find it and connect to the stream.
    So far, all I get on the client side is a QT window that says, "Live Broadcast" and "ready".
    If the clients connect to the stream through the media server (which has its own static IP that matches the one in the .sdp) shouldn't they be able to view the webcast?
    Any and all thoughts are most appreciated.

    Using Manual Unicast:
    Manual unicast is a method of broadcasting that requires you to export an SDP file from QuickTime Broadcaster to one receiving computer identified by its IP address. The receiving application can be a single QuickTime Player or QuickTime Streaming Server or Darwin Streaming Server. If the receiving application is QTSS or DSS, the broadcast is reflected and no longer limited to a single IP address.
    To broadcast via Manual Unicast:
    If necessary, click Show Details in the QuickTime Broadcaster window, and in the Network pane choose a preset.
    Choose Manual Unicast from the Transmission pop-up menu, and enter the IP address of the receiving computer (or accept the default IP address of your own computer if broadcasting to yourself as a test), the audio port and video port numbers (or accept the defaults if broadcasting one-to-one), and the buffer delay (or accept the default).
    If desired, also enter information in the Annotation section.
    Click Broadcast, and then choose Export from the File menu and SDP or Movie from the Export submenu.
    Specify a name for the SDP or movie file and click Export.
    If the file is exported directly to a QuickTime Player, the viewer opens the file using "Open Movie in New Player" to view the broadcast. If the file is exported to QTSS or DSS, the viewer instead uses "Open URL in New Player." Talk to your QTSS or DSS administrator to determine the correct URL.
    Viewing a QT broadcast:
    Your audience can view your live broadcast using either QuickTime Player or a web browser with the QuickTime Plugin. You determine how users will see the broadcast by distributing an announcement movie file, which is needed by QuickTime Player to "tune in" to your broadcast, or by creating a Web page that refers to the movie file.
    For best results, your viewers should use QuickTime 6. QuickTime Broadcaster streams can be viewed using versions as early as QuickTime 4, but some viewers may not be able to watch your broadcast if you choose compression methods that are not available in the older software.
    When viewers connect to your stream, progress messages appear about connecting, negotiating, and buffering, then the stream begins playing. Viewers can pause or stop the broadcast, but when they resume they'll jump to the current moment if they're watching a live broadcast.
    If viewers are watching an archived (or prerecorded) broadcast, they will be able to pause, rewind, or skip ahead using the QuickTime controls.
    Annotating your broadcast:
    You can add a title, copyright, and other annotations to your broadcast.
    If necessary, click the Show Details button in the QuickTime Broadcaster window. Then click the Network tab and fill in the desired fields under Annotations.
    Your audience can view this information by choosing Show Movie Info from the File menu in the QuickTime Player application.
    About Instant-On streaming:
    Viewers watching a streaming video with QuickTime 6 will benefit from Instant-On, an advance in Apple's patent-pending Skip Protection technology that dramatically reduces buffer, or wait, time for an instantaneous viewing experience. Viewers can click around or scrub video as if it was on their hard disk.
    Users must have a broadband connection to experience Instant-On. The responsiveness of Instant-On is affected by available bandwidth and size, or data rate, of the content. It can also be affected by the codec used. Hinted movies made using the QDesign Audio codec, for example, may not be Instant-On capable.
    Choosing a broadcast method:
    The size of your expected audience determines how you deliver the broadcast.
    For example, when broadcasting a live event to only one QuickTime Player, QuickTime Broadcaster can send a single stream using Mac OS X without server software.

  • Can't get remote cluster machine to encode video - getting 'Media Server application unexpectedly quit'

    Hi
    Using Compressor 4 / Apple QuarterMaster admin etc, I have set up a Cluster and it works well to Share > Export Using Compressor Settings.  That took some doing, and I'm happy that it works.
    If I do all my processing in the foreground, or alternatively in the background on my FCPX computer, ie without running or using any cluster in the background, it all goes well.  Quick, error free.
    If I activate the cluster and only put my local machine's compressor services into it, and then send my compressor batch to the cluster, it works perfectly well.  But that defeats the point of having a cluster.  I want the remote machine to do all the work so my local machine doesn't slow down.
    Unfortunately, if I add the remote machine's services into the cluster, the encoding always fails with 'Media Server application unexpectedly quit' in the error log.  I know that the cluster is distributing segments of the file to the remote machine - this can be seen in the Share Monitor, but they never get processed and sit there waiting until I get the error message.
    The remote machine is a modern 4G core 2 duo MacBook. It's never been used for this before.  It has Compressor 4 and the Pro Apps Update installed and both appear to work.  Both machines are running 10.6.8.  The remote machine has Compressor services initialised in Apple QMaster sharing.  The QMasterAdmin sees these services.  They are accessible over Bonjour and appear in the Cluster.  Compressor services from both the local and the remote machine are configured exactly the same way.  The same QT codecs exist on both machines.  I've restarted, shift-restarted, etc etc.
    So I am at a loss here.  The remote machine just won't compress anything it is sent.
    Any ideas?  Must both have FCPX installed?
    Anyone actually got a remote machine in a cluster to work with Compressor 4?  I can't figure it out.
    Chris.

    OK... finally sorted it out.
    It's a bug, as far as I can tell.
    Any job entered directly into Compressor 4 in the normal Compressor manner will be successfully rendered by any working cluster from any machine that can access the cluster.  That's good.  It means that the underlying distributed processing model works well.
    HOWEVER - any job forwarded to a Compressor 4 cluster that includes non-local compressor services (ie compressor services not resident on the same machine), using Share > Export Using Compressor Settings direct from FCPX will fail.
    To confirm this bug, I made a cluster on a remote machine.  It was a dual core machine, so I enabled 2 compressor services on that machine, and that's all the cluster was.  Simple.
    I then manually entered a video file (ProRess 422 720p) into Compressor on the remote machine.  I did this by physically setting up new job using the compressor user interface.  A bog standard ProRes422 720p file rendered fine this way on the remote machine.  As did anything else I gave it.  Good.
    Then on my main machine, I opened Compressor and made a job based on the same file and settings, and sent it to the remote machine's cluster.  No problem at all!  Great!
    So now I know that both Compressor versions, and the clustering model, are working fine.  In fact I can send all sorts of files to the cluster, from any other version of compressor, and have them processed on the remote machine, and get the result back on my desktop later on.  Excellent.
    But, if I try put this same file into a FMPX timeline, and go Share > Export Using Compressor Settings.... and select a cluster with remote (non-local) compressor services, it does not work.  Rendering the video segments on the remote machine times out and fails, every time.  It doesn't matter what file format I use, it just fails.
    So it's a bug.
    From what I can tell, Final Cut Pro X somehow messes up the Share > Export Using Compressor settings where the cluster includes non-local compressor services, causing all jobs to fail.  The same Share > Export Using Compressor Settings will work quite happily if all the services on the cluster are on the same machine as FCPX, or if the job is sent to This Computer in the background.  But any attempt to send files to a cluster using any remote services will fail.
    I hope this saves some people from wasting as much time as I have!
    One workaround is to export to ProRes then put this file manually into Compressor, sending the job to the remote cluster.  This is a two step process with a large intermediary ProRes file.  If one goes Export as QuickTime movie, generating the intermediary file prevents further FCPX work being done.
    To get the intermediary in the background one could use  Share > Export Using Compressor Settings via either This Computer, or to a cluster using only local services.  Then once complete, manually add it to a compressor job.
    So this is a FCPX bug as far as I can tell.
    Chris.

    Just recently, I purchased and installed
    'FlashPioneerVideoChat'...
    I decided to use Flash Media Server 3 (developer addition)

    Hi, but doesn't the linux version work on a mac?
    I'm a bit confused here.
    I currently shoot video on a Canon mini dv camera and edit in Apple imovie.
    Convert to Apple Quicktime and then import into Flash 8 video encoder.
    I ftp the clips upto a flash server, from my mac and upload the playlist to my website host
    using Flash 8.
    Don't tell me i've now got to get one of those dreadful PC thingies to complete the loop,
    surely Adobe didn't invent this wonderful piece of software so it could run from a PC?
    Or did they?

  • Front Row 'Sources' not finding media server

    Hi all!
    I use my Mac Mini as a media server for my apple TV and all my computers/macs with iTunes.
    Everything works fine apart from Front Row on my MacBook that only seems able to find my local machine under sources.
    Any ideas?

    You are not alone. I am experiencing the same problem.
    We have consolidated all of our music and videos (much if it purchased via iTunes) onto a NAS media server. Our Macs have no problem seeing the server either from within iTunes or QuickTime Player. Yet, trying to find it using Front Row is impossible. There are no menu source options other than one's own mac or, alternatively, the iTunes Server mothership.
    Either this is an oversight in the way Front Row was written, or more likely, it's some Draconian control issue decided in Cupertino.
    For anyone who's acquired a lot of content (all legally, too, I might add) and stores it externally of his/her mac, this issue makes Front Row useless.

  • Dynamic Link Media Server Error On Video Export Photoshop CC 2014

    Dynamic Link Media Server Error On Video Export Photoshop CC 2014

    Hi,
    Are you still having problems with CS6 Video Export?
    What Export settings are you using? (A screencapture might be the fastest way to answer that.)
    Does it work if you use the default settings?
    If you have time to experiment, I have some suggestions:
    Would you please try/verify the following:
    1. Be sure virus/security/parental control software hasn't trapped parts of Photoshop, Bridge, Premiere, Lightroom, or any Adobe app using DynamicLinkMediaServer. (Make sure the Adobe apps are added as exceptions if needed.)
    2. Ensure you have the latest version of QuickTime
    3. Close all Adobe applications - wait more than 30 seconds, then launch Photoshop and try to open and export the file.
    - If unsuccessful, view Task Manager/Processes to verify necessary processes started up when importing video (dynamiclinkmanager.exe, dynamiclinkmediaserver.exe and Adobe QT32 Server.exe)
    - If unsuccessful, please capture the full error message text.
    4. Close all Adobe apps, wait 30 seconds - launch Bridge and try to open/export the file.
    Thanks,
    Meredith

    little snitch on os x blocks something (i dont know what exact) of adobe in the background. i have no rule defined for adobe in little snitch, so everything of adobe can go out.
    when i stop little snitch, everything works fine - photoshop opens videos without the medialink error, photoshop starts up in seconds and premiere starts without a quicktime error.

  • DynamicLink Media Server won't let me import video for video frames to layers anymore.

    I am trying to load a video into photoshop cc (trial) via File > Import > Video Frames to Layers. It has worked in the past, but for some reason has seemed to have stopped working. I have uninstalled and reinstalled 3 times, and I've shut down my computer and rebooted it multiple times. I have also looked into the other questions listing "dynamiclink media server" as a problem and have tried to figure out what is wrong, or how to fix it. I have not been able to understand what I should do, so I was hoping someone would know how to help me.
    I have a macbook pro, which is about 2 years old. That's all they've told me to list, so thank you if you're able to help!!!

    Were you able to solve this problem?
    I am experiencing the same on
    Computer Environment:
    MacBook Pro Early 2011
    Graphics  AMD Radeon HD 6490M 256 MB
    Memory  16 GB 1333 MHz DDR3
    SSD with 512GB; about 81GB are still free
    Software:
    Mavericks  OS X 10.9.5
    Adobe Mastercollection CS6 Extended, 64bit.
    Including the Dynamic Link Media Server Update 1.0.1 are all individual apps up to date as of today, March 9 2015.
    Quicktime Player (v.10.3)
    I am also following this discussion Re: trying to import video"Could not complete your request because it is not the right kind of document"
    but non of the solutions under the post #4, #17 either did not work or applied to me, because they were suggested for a Windows user.
    Other notes:
    Bridge is not working at all. It launches, but crashes as soon as you see the workspace.
    Hence, Mini Bridge in Photoshop is also crashing.
    I do have all codecs for the videos, that I was trying to open, though.
    It cannot be an issue, that I have not enough RAM.
    After several other problems with After Effects, Premiere Pro and Media Encoder, which remain partly unsolved, this post starts form a fresh installation of the whole Adobe Suite. Even used the Cloud Cleaner Tool beforehand and made sure, all presets are from this CS6 version only.

  • Does QuickTime Streaming Server have a nice user gui?

    I am thinking of getting Mac OS X Server for the QuickTime Streaming Server that comes with this. I have only been able to find admin gui pictures. Does QTSS come with any nice user interfaces? Is there any example of any of the default user interfaces / webpages?
    Thank you.

    AFIAK "Windows Media Server" and "Real Media Server" are not providing a content management "Web GUI Media Server" either. What you get with QTSS/DSS that you're not getting with Windows Media Server and Real Media Server is what I have quantified to be a greater amount of player ubiquity (the highest in reality is Flash, but you're stuck with Flash Media Server and On2 VP6 codec (which I think looks horrible)).
    Just one thing to ask you, think of your customers (most the one's I am concerned with are students) and think of what they use to play music. Do they use a Zune? A Creative Nomad? Or do the use an iPod? Most people have ipods, I would think, and therefore use iTunes, and therefore have quicktime installed. Hmmmm... wait I can play almost any open source media format with quicktime, oh and wait I can stream just about any open source (streamable) media format with QTSS/DSS.
    Oh did I mention I can run DSS on a variety of rock solid *nix distro's on off the shelf parts from my local electronics store. Can you say cheap streaming media server?
    In the end it's all apple's and orange's to me. Yah windows is more pervasive, but you're going to be pigeon holed into using windows media formats (which are all proprietary), and dealing with an unstable server OS (no debating this one). With QTSS/DSS I can stream mpeg-4's or 3gp or if I so desired .mov. I don't particularly like the SpyWare install nature of real player and it's thousands upon thousands of updates, and version name changes, and this or that. I personally don't even have it installed, nor do I visit any website that uses it. I also think real's and windows media's video quality is so so (just my opinion).
    h.264 is really where it's at, it's part of everything nowadays including production pipelines for movies, and in HD-DVD and BluRay DVD specs. Yah I am sure you can stream h.264 encoded .RM or .WMV (not sure if that's possible) but again your limited. I personally stream MPEG-4's (completely platform indpendent, and can be played back in almost all media players (including windows media player with the envivio plugin), and VLC which is free and can be installed on (windows, os x, linux).
    The Killer combo for me is really, flash player (flash can now play mpeg-4's including h.264, but only for downloads) playing RTSP MPEG-4 h.264 encoded streams form DSS/QTSS (or some other blazingly fast and stable streaming server, there are other's out there, but DSS/QTSS seems pretty dang pervasive to me).

  • Encoding to H.264 FLV: Flash Media Server Streaming

    Hi all,
    I've been hoping to find the magic Compressor settings which would allow me to compress a stream-able FLV on our Flash Media Server.
    I realize I can use the default QuickTime Export component to create an FLV, however this does not support distributive rendering/job segmenting. Currently I'm trying the 'QuickTime Movie' file format (last on the format list) without any luck.
    As QuickTime can produce a streamable FLV with the export component I'm figuring there HAS to be a way to manually configure Conpressor to do the same: Has anyone worked this out?
    Thanks for any assistance
    - Billy

    Related to my post above is it be possible to access and use the TrueMotion VP6 (Perian) format settings in Compressor? This format is also accessible through the QuickTime Export component option, and doing so would would both make the flash streams more compatible (w/ old players) and allow job segmenting.
    Thanks again for any thoughts ...

  • Quicktime Streaming Server Live broadcast Issue

    Hi All,
    If someone could please help me with this, I have a Quicktime Streaming server set up in our DMZ with Nicecast being used to broadcast up to the server. When I enter the URL of the station in Internet Explorer Windows Media Player launches without any issue and plays the live broadcast. When I try to launch the URL in Firefox or Google Chrome for some reason the Quicktime plugin attempts to play the broadcast, plays about 10 seconds and stops. Any thoughts to why that is?
    Thank You,

    The embedded link plays on Windows in IE 7, Firefox 3.5 (Mac and Win), and Safari 4.0.2 Mac, all with QT 7.6.2. Below are some screenshots of the chat window where the stream plays from:
    *This is Firefox 3.5 Mac:*
    *This is Safari 4.0.2 Mac:*
    *This is Firefox 3.5 Win:*
    *This is IE 7:*
    The issue with Safari and Firefox in the top two images is the code on the page needs to be fixed. This is what's there:
    <OBJECT CLASSID="clsid:02BF25D5-8C17-4B23-BC80-D3488ABDDC6B" CODEBASE="http://www.apple.com/qtactivex/qtplugin.cab" WIDTH="90" HEIGHT="50" >

    </EMBED>
    </OBJECT>
    and that's why you see the little QT window next to the 'Riot Radio' graphic and why you see the player window with the -2048 error code below it in the Safari screenshot. If the code is changed to this:
    <OBJECT CLASSID="clsid:02BF25D5-8C17-4B23-BC80-D3488ABDDC6B" CODEBASE="http://www.apple.com/qtactivex/qtplugin.cab" WIDTH="90" HEIGHT="50">

    </EMBED>
    </OBJECT>
    the little QT box should disappear and the player will display in the area below the 'Riot Radio' graphic. However, the '<OBJECT>' and '<EMBED>' tags are deprecated in favor of using Apple's javascript implementation of calling QT in web pages. This is also the reason that the QT plugin doesn't load in IE 7 (last image) -the 'Q' with the '?' mark on it.
    Here's a sample of what could be used:
    <head>
    <script src="AC_QuickTime.js" language="JavaScript" type="text/javascript"></script>
    </head>
    <body>
    <script language="JavaScript" type="text/javascript">
    QT_WriteOBJECT('http://www.theriotradio.com/chatbox/riotradio.mov','310','305',' ',
    'autoplay','true',
    'controller','true',
    'align','middle');
    </script>
    </body>
    You can pass this link:
    http://developer.apple.com/internet/ieembedprep.html
    along to your coder to have him look at what is recommended for QT embedding using javascript to make it work with IE 7/8 -it will also work with FF and Safari. The 'AC_QuickTime.js' javascript, shown in the code sample, can be downloaded from the page linked above and placed on the site.

  • Quicktime Streaming Server : Restrict Access

    Hi,
    I am streaming some media files using QuickTime Streaming server and publishing them. I get a web URL for that media.
    I have 2 kind of users. Internal (i.e. in the same network domain in which I am) and external users (open general users)
    I would like to restrict access to some media only to internal users.
    Does anyone have clue how to do this?
    Thanks a lot in advance.

    I've tried doing the same and never got it working... Not even once. I'd be curious to know how you got it working that one time. I've never heard of anyone getting this to work.
    My suggestion is to setup the other XServe with the XRAID as your QTSS or move the XRAID to your QTSS box.

  • Setup a home file/Media server with no internet access

    Hi,
    I have a home network with a wifi router connected to an Adsl modem. I try to setup a new server (macbook pro with Yosemite as OS) which will be only used as file and media server for my local network.
    I DO NOT want this server to have access to out of my local network and no one out of my local network could access it. in other words, it has to be isolated as a local server with no incoming/outgoing access from out of my local network.
    I should mention that this server can be accessed by other family members and they can setup other applications without my awareness... and I do not want to manually deny each access request (in or out) in the server's firewall and I am not always behind the server. I want to be sure that "all access" from/to out of my local network are denied.
    my local network dhcp rang is 192.168.10.10 to 192.168.10.20 and I have a firewall on the router and one on this server (little snitch).
    I have no idea how to do this, how to configure IPs out of my local network in the firewalls etc...
    I would appreciate if anyone can help me (I have a limited knowledge about networking)
    Many thanks
    Bye

    Thanks for your reply ChuckBing.
    Unfortunately I had already copied the instructions I found in the Sun documentaion to the letter and it still needed access to the internet. In the end I solved the problem by pointing the iepluginurl to a non existent file and putting a URL, pointing to an offline JRE executable on the server, as the message that appears when the applet cannot be loaded. The clients then have the choice of downloading the JRE or installing it online by clicking on the URL.
    Thanks anyway.
