Quicktime .MOV file plays audio only - no video

Okay, here goes...
I created a .MOV file from Avid via the H.264 codec. This file contains video and audio and was made on a Mac using Leopard. I played it back successfully on that machine.
I then copied it to a data DVD and put it on my XP PC with all OS software up to date. I have a freshly updated QT 7.6 install. The files will only play back audio on my PC - video appears black (if preferences are set to Direct X) or white (if preferences are set to safe mode). Video card is an NVIDIA GeForce 7900 GT/GTO; driver is up to date.
Anybody have any insight into what I need to do to my PC to get this video to play?

Thanks for the link. Unfortunately, it doesn't directly address the issue I am having (though it does show me the world of hurt out there when FCP and Avid bump up against each other in the same post process).
And the third-party page doesn't have any codecs for Avid.
Again, I am at a loss. I created the QT files from my Avid project on a Mac. The files played back properly on that Mac. They won't play back on my Windows machine, so I can only assume that there's something missing or different between the QT versions for Mac and Windows.
Since I can't figure out how to get these files to play properly on a PC and since my home machine is a PC, I guess I will not output footage from Avid to a .MOV file in the future. I will try to find a format that Windows Media Player likes, I guess.
Thanks for the help.

  • IMac quicktime movies [HD] play audio only on PC (video is green)

We have an iMac w/two 500 GB external drives for video storage and a 1 TB TimeCapsule.  The iMac recently stopped running and failed to boot; after opening and reseating the memory, it is back up and running, but fails to recognize either external drive.  In a panic, we copied all the quicktime movies (all our kids baby movies) from the TimeCapsule backups to a separate PC for backup.
On the PC, the movies play and we hear the audio, but the video is just green.  The same movie plays fine on the iMac, even when playing from the PC hard drive.

With some googlefu I have found the problem, which lies in the icod or Apple Intermediate Codec which was used to encode the movies when they were imported from my HD camcorder.
Unfortunately, Apple saw fit to use a proprietary codec on my personal files, limiting their use elsewhere, without any obvious notification before the files were removed from the source device to make space for new movies.  Now I have 550 GB of quicktime movie files readable only with a Mac-based product.

  • .MOV files play audio but no video

hi, does anyone know why that when i open a .MOV file from my digital camera in quicktime, the audio plays fine but the picture however is a fuzzy green and purple mess? i have tried re-installing quicktime and everything but it makes no difference. do i need a new plugin for .mov files? the video plays fine in realplayer, but i would like to be able to open it in quicktime for realplayer tends to jump and freeze quite a lot.
any help would be most obliged!

Yes, this fixed my problem too.
The problem appears to be that Quicktime for Windows is set to require DirectX support as the default and my Toshiba Tecra M2 notebook with NVIDIA GeForce FX Go5200 32M/64M discrete video adapter probably doesn't support that.
    Quicktime Preferences (Advanced tab)

  • .mov file plays audio, but no video on win7

A friend sent me some .mov files he recorded with his camcorder and loaded onto his mac. I have tried viewing them on my win7 machine using quicktime, windows media player, and vlc media player. On the first two the audio plays, but no video displays. the vlc player says:No suitable decoder module:
VLC does not support the audio or video format "m2v1".
Has anyone else seen / worked around this?
    Thanks,
    Paul

Ask the Mac author to use "delivery" codecs like H.264 video and AAC audio instead of the iMovie editing codecs.

  • QuickTime 7.5 Plays Audio but no Video on .avi file

Found a good clip to use in a classroom setting, but it is .avi. I updated QuickTime to 7.5, but still only plays audio - no video whatsoever. Any ideas? Thanks!

Install Perian on the computer; if it doesn't work, choose Show Movie Properties from the Window menu and check the video format. An AVI file may contain audio and video of any format, and some formats cannot be used on Mac OS X.

  • .m4b files play audio but no video in QuickTime

I recently upgraded to Lion, after which QuickTime no longer displays the video with my .m4b files.  It plays the audio fine, but none of the video slides that are in the files. I spent time on the phone with tech support, and all they could suggest was using another media player such as VLC.  But that doesn't answer the questions as to why QuickTime no longer plays the video in .m4b files.  Does anyone else experience this?

I have found the solution - forget about QuickTime, use NicePlayer,

  • In Premiere Pro CS5.5 AVI file imports audio only - no video.

I've got a file (one of 3) I've been given to create a smaller file (320x480) from.
The file is an avi file and plays (video and audio) just fine in the native Windows media player. (I'm on Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit) There are no issues of memory or HDisc space.
    Video:
The file is 2:21:29 in length.
    720x480
    Data rate 1489kbps
    Total bitrate 1617kbps
    29 frames/second
    Audio:
    Bit rate 128kbps
    Channels 2 (stereo)
    Audio sample rate 48 kHz
    The file is about 1.6Gb
This is one of 3 I recieved. The other two were of comparable specs and similar length (not exactly but one was longer, the other shorter.)
The problem is that this particular file (the other two import perfectly), when imported, only comes in as an audio file. No video imports. The other files import as audio and video. No error message either.
I've imported all kinds of video files in the past with different frame sizes, rates, and aspect ratios, and codecs, yet I've never had one that only imports the audio without the video.
    Suggestions?!

Post in the Premiere Pro forum. This forum is for suite specific issues only.

  • ITunes lists movie files as audio only?

I've had a large Movie library in my iTunes for years, and have recently had difficulty playing some older .mov files in the latest iTunes.  Nobody seems to know the reason or a workaround aside from using a different video player outside of iTunes.
But now I've noticed that while scrolling through my AUDIO files in iTunes, the names of files that I know for a fact were previously MOVIES...ie "Madonna's tribute to Michael Jackson MTV awards live."  That was a video file that used to play in my iTunes, but I curiously now find it in my MUSIC section and when I get the info about the file, it says it's an ACC audio file with no video info listed.  I go to OPTIONS in the info window to try to change the media type to VIDEO, and that entire option is greyed out allowing no change to the presselected MUSIC category.
I've found about 100 of these files that should have video content.
Anyone have any ideas as to what has happened or what I can do to retreive prior video content?
    I certainly appreciate any input,
    Chad

    Anyone have any suggestions?

  • Quicktime .mov files opens up Safari during video

I have this .mov quicktime file, i can watch it but every few seconds and when it first opens up safari starts up and each time it creats a new window. Is there any way i can stop this?

Steven, I'd suggest you try posting in the QuickTime for Mac forum. You'll be more likely to get help there than you will here in the QuickTime for Windows forum.
    Good luck.

  • ITunes Extras on Apple TV: video features play audio only; no video (bug)

I downloaded "Star Trek" (2009) with iTunes extras; I accessed the film on my Apple TV, and went to the additional video content page. However, when I attempted to play the extra video features, I received the alert message that the "music volume" was low, prompting me to hit "OK". The screen would return to the menu, and the audio from the extra feature would play; no video from the feature would appear.
This is a bug--until a update comes to the Apple TV, an interim solution would be to go to Settings > Audio & Video > Control Music Volume, and turning the music volume control off.

Yes, sounds as though it's failing or failed.
You'll be lucky to get it repaired if it's out of warranty.  Apple didn't even offer a paid repair when one of mine failed.
Got home from holiday yesterday and the PVR hard drive seems to have failed and is just clicking away.

  • No video when playing QuickTime MOV file in iTunes

I received a QuickTime MOV file from a business associate who transferred it from his Canon Vixia HF10 camcorder to his Mac. When I load up the file in iTunes on my Win XP machine, it will play back the audio, but there is no video. When I try to play it back in QuickTime, a window comes up telling me that additional software is needed. When I click the button to go download the software, a browser window comes up listing about 15 different products -- with no indication of which if any will solve the problem. I don't know for certain that any of them will, and I don't have time to download 15 products to test each one. Is there not a more simple way to find out what I need and where to download it? Alternatively, is there a way to convert this file to a friendlier format? This is video of a business event that we need to edit for distribution.

Thanks. That explains it. The person who made the .wmv file says it was made with Camtasia Studio. Do you have any idea what he might have done for it to choose this MSS2 codec over something more universally compatible?
Camtasia is a screen capture application for Windows (like Snapz Pro for mac). We use it here, it works quite well but you get WMV files and tough darts, I guess if you want other than that. I presume real time capture of activity on the screen calls for a codec simple enough to keep up and not drop frames. It does work quite well though.
Play it on WMP in Parallels, Boot Camp, etc.
