Quicktime Movie imports as a Single Clip

I shot a short movie with my digital camera which imports into Imovie as a single clip. How do I break it into separate clips for editing? I think its raw format must be mpeg-4. Thanks!

Just play the clip in iMovie, stop on the first frame of a new scene (use the arrow keys to move back and forth), then select Edit -> Split Clip at Playhead. Or just hit hit Apple-K or Apple-T (I can't remember off hand the shortcut).
Automatic splitting into separate clips only happens when importing directly from a DV camcorder over Firewire.

Quicktime Movie Import

Hi All,
I Had someone make me a lower 3rd graphic for a project and he delivered it as a Quicktime movie (.mov). I see the graphic fine in the view but when I drop it in the Timeline I'm just getting black. I have tried different Video Tracks but nothing. Also, when I open the file in the Timeline it's only black no graphic. Any ideas?

I don't mean animated.
The animation QT codec support an alpha channel.

Canon HV20 imports footage as a single clip

I have a Canon HV20 and am trying to import my footage as separate clips based on when I pressed the record / pause button. Currently, when I import the footage automatically the footage is imported as a single clip and therefore one large .MOV file. From what I've read and heard, it's supposed to create a new clip for every start / stop on the tape. Does anyone have a fix for this?

I've only tried it on Auto. I'll have to give it a show in Manual. Is this to say you have to manually start and stop the import to create different clips? or is putting it in Manual mode a way to get it to recognize the timecode breaks?
Also, I'm capturing the full frame of 1920 x 1080 (if that helps).

Error -2002 when importing quicktime movie clips into iMovie Project

When I import QuickTime movie clips into my project, the scroll bar fills about 1/3 of the way, and then I get this message:
Can't open file "DSCN0812.MOV"; skipping it and continuing. I CLICK "OK," and then this message appears:
Error during import
The file could not be imported: (-2002)
This happens to every movie clip. Anyone have any idea what's happening here?

I guess, you try to import 'moving images' from a still cam, right? these are in a codec (=mov is no format, just a container) , iM doesn't support. Use the free tool *Mpeg Streamclip* www.squared5.com to convert these files to 'dv stream' BEFORE importing to iMovie.

Unable to Sync Quicktime Movie Clips with IPOD

I am a new ipod user having difficulty syncing Quicktime movie clips to IPOD.
Clips are saved as .mov files and Itunes will play.
However I cannot get them to sync woth IPOD.
Any ideas - Do I need to convert to annother format?

First you need to import your movies into iTunes. Do this by opening iTunes <File> <Import> <Movies> then choose the movie you want to put on your iPod. Make sure the movie has .mov at the end otherwise it won't be set up the way it's supposed to be.
Once the movie is imported into iTunes right click on it so a pull down menu appears. Click on <Convert Selection for iPod/iPhone>. It should begin converting it on its own and when it's done you'll hear the typical sound that happens after importing a cd, telling you the operation is complete.
After it's converted, you will have 2 identical movies in your menu. If you <Get Info> on each, you should be able to see which is newest version; that is the movie you are going to want to sync.
Then plug your iPod in to iTunes, go to the movie tab in iPod summary and check off the converted movies you want to sync to your iPod. Press <Sync> and that should add your movies to your iPod.

Can't import Quicktime .mov into iMovie 10

Is it possible to import a Quicktime movie into iMovie 10? I used to be able to do this with iMovie 9 but cannot get it to work with 10. I can drag it into an event but no clips show up. I can't believe that Apple would require a 3rd party product to get this to work.
As a separate rant, you used to be able to edit clips directly in Quicktime but Apple removed this functionality a while back; ie. deleting parts of clips rather than just trimming from the ends. It is getting tougher and tougher to do basic editing even if you stay within the Apple ecosystem...

.mov can contain a variety of different movie formats not all of which are importable into iMovie 10. Try playing it in Quicktime player 10 - does it say it has to convert? If it converts it, the resultant file should import into iMovie 10 OK. see: OS X Mavericks: Some files may be converted when opened in QuickTime Player - Apple Support
In Quicktime 10 the way to do this is to split a movie into clips and trim each clip as required. These can then be imported into iMovie and joined as part of a project. See: QuickTime Player 10.x: Rearrange your movie’s content
Quicktime 7 Pro (which does allow removing 'middle' parts of a movie) still works in Yosemite

Premiere Pro CC 2014 Does Not Import Panasonic GH4 Spanned Files as a Single Clip

Premier Pro CC 2014 does not import Panasonic GH4 spanned files as a single clip. I have made a short video that shows the problem with the GH4 footage and it show how the Canon XA-10 footage imports correctly.
Is this a known problem? Am I doing something wrong? It makes the Master Clip Effects in Premier Pro useless because every spanning fragment is turned into a master clip.

I've looked up all sorts of MP4/MOV comparisons on the web ... most conclude that mov is perhaps a bit "safer" on an Apple OS and mp4 "safer" on a PC and non-Apple "devices", but generally list the contents of the two as being nearly indistinguishable. I do realize the Qt has had ... issues ... within the Adobe programs, especially on PC's.
You have any other good info? Always looking to learn from the more experienced ...

Should I export captured clips as Quicktime movies?

Do I need to export my captured clips as Quicktime movies if I want to import them as source clips in other projects?
I had been importing directly from the capture scratch folder, but this resulted in mono audio tracks, rather than stereo. Everything else looked fine...
This problem has been driving me nuts...perhaps this is the explanation.

Help! I accepted what I though was an easy assignment to make a DVD of a web page clip
so my sister-in-law can show it as part of the Veteran's Day program at her school. The

so it can be played over the projection system that plays normal DVD movies.
I tried using Toast and it burned a nice coster that plays a slide show with no audio.

ctrl-click on your link, choose from context-menu 'download file'.. got a 5.8MB scene4.swf file..
opened that with QTpro + perian.org plug-in.. plays..
'Export/dv' generates an audio-less file ...
2nd try:
using VisualHub, set output to dv.. boom!.. aborts.
3rd try:
using VisualHub, set output to h264 - audio only file ( ?? )
but, now I have an audio-less dv + and a video-less h264.. so, I simply copy/add trimmed the audio from h264 to the dv file in QTpro.. tadaahhh , done.
note:
I mostly doubt, that all pics in this 'show' are free for use, and not © protected..
for sure, the music has some © ...
and: as the credits tell you, the whole swf claims a © ..
be nice to copy rights ..

QuickTime Movie not importing

I have a file of Halloween video shot by a professional. He gave them to me in .mov - kind: Quicktime movie. I downloaded them from his portable drive directly onto my desktop. The folder has 30 clips in it, with a total of 11.85GB of info - so I know there is something there.
I cannot open them in Quicktime version 10.0 - when I try I get this message:
The document “Halloween001.mov” could not be opened. The movie is not in a format that QuickTime Player understands.
the icon next to each title is the Quicktime icon, so I don't know what's up with that. When I click on the "Learn more" button it takes me to the Apple support page that talks about Codecs. That page seemed to be saying that I needed one of the other products listed there to convert the video, so I bought iLife 9, installed it, but it has not helped.
If try to use the Import Movies command, all the .mov files are grayed out.
I downloaded MPEG Streamclip 1.9.3b2, and tried to convert the clips into other formats - like the Apple Intermediate Codec suggested in another post. Basically the clip seems to open, but it is blank - black screen, and no audio.
Interestingly, when I tried to open them in iTunes, I could hear the audio, but the image remained black.
I figure I need to know 2 things - what was the original format the video was shot in, and how he converted it - but this is a busy guy so I want to make sure I ask him the correct questions the first time - that is what I am hoping you can help me with... what do I need to ask the original videographer about the format...
from there I assume you can help me figure out why my Quicktime player won't recognize Quicktime videos, and what program I need to convert these files into a format that I can use in iMovie.
any help with this is greatly appreciated ... this footage is a Halloween production that I wrote, directed and produced (as well as co-starring in LOL). It is valuable family History so my kids can remember what a kook their Mom was

Actually, my friend would probably be willing to supply the video clips in some other format, if you can tell me the format that is best for him to give them to me in...

Importing Quicktime movies into IMovie

I have some Quicktime movies that are 868.4 MB in size and when I import them into Imovie they take approximatley 2 hours to import.
Is there a way of speeding up the process.
I have QT Pro and have tried editing the movie prior to import but the resulting file although smaller in size plays back as a green screen.
Can anyone suggest a solution. QT Pro doesnt seem to have a SPLIT feature in it like IMovie.

Why don't you just start the import at night, and let it run while you sleep? That will probably be the easiest solution.
To edit in Quicktime, copy-and-paste works the best. Open your clip, and then start a second blank Quicktime movie. Select the portion you want to use by marking the in and out points (I and O keyboard shortcuts), cut, then select your other window, and paste. Then export the pasted clip as DV stream for easy import into iMovie. Repeat for each clip. Or select the sections you don't want, and cut them from your original movie.

Being new to iMovie, I'm not sure whether I can import a number of quicktime movies and have them play as one...? If this is possible, am I able to edit the clips as well?

I really appreciate your posts here, but in this case, I have to grab into your steering wheel:

iM has some (many) limitations, to make it simple & convenient.. by concept, it is restricted to miniDV imports... so, any QT.mov which fullfills the specs of a miniDV will import flawless.. that is DV as codec, PAL/NTSC according to your standards...
ANY other codec (...hmm, ok, some mpeg4, Apple Intemediate also work...), format, framerate, resolution has to be converted first to work within iMovie.. that could work, but sometimes fail; well known example on this board: downloads from the iNet, mpegs, youtube.com videos etc....
esp. playback-formats as mpegs will lose their audio when imported into iM; you need 3rd party tools as Streamclip to convert them BEFORE importing to iM...
so, if something gets wrong, Royboy, don't hesitate to come back....!

How do I copy a single clip from a Quicktime movie? I've gone to edit and then clicked copy and hear the sound of a camera shooting, but can'f figure out where it goes so I can retrieve it? Where does it go?

Try these steps using QuickTime Player 7 or QuickTime 10.1:
Open the file in the player version of your choice. Move the playhead to the frame you want and Command-c (or Copy) from either versions Edit menu.
Open the Preview app and choose New From Clipboard (File menu) and save the image in the format of your choice.

Error message when trying to import Quicktime movies

All of the sudden, I'm getting this weird error message when trying to import various Quicktime movies. I've never seen this message before:
File Error: 1 file(s) recognized, 0 access denied, 1 unknown
Any thoughts why this might be happening? Any input would be appreciated.

I now see that two of them have been encoded using the AAC, Sorenson Video 3 codec which is not one I've seen before so I suspect that would be it.
The other one I'm having trouble with is encoded using Integer (Big Endian), Animation. I know I've seen the Integer (Big Endian) codec before so do you think that because it's animation that's a problem? I imported several other uncompressed files that were encoded with Integer (Big Endian) that worked fine so that's my suspicion.

I have FCE 4.0.1 and running OS x 10.7.5 when i burn my movie the audio from my movie clips don't come through . My Sound effects and music can be heard. I export to Quicktime movie, make it self contained then open IDVD for an intro and burn it.

Try Mixing Down the audio before export.
