QuickTime Movie not importing

I have a file of Halloween video shot by a professional. He gave them to me in .mov - kind: Quicktime movie. I downloaded them from his portable drive directly onto my desktop. The folder has 30 clips in it, with a total of 11.85GB of info - so I know there is something there.
I cannot open them in Quicktime version 10.0 - when I try I get this message:
The document “Halloween001.mov” could not be opened. The movie is not in a format that QuickTime Player understands.
the icon next to each title is the Quicktime icon, so I don't know what's up with that. When I click on the "Learn more" button it takes me to the Apple support page that talks about Codecs. That page seemed to be saying that I needed one of the other products listed there to convert the video, so I bought iLife 9, installed it, but it has not helped.
If try to use the Import Movies command, all the .mov files are grayed out.
I downloaded MPEG Streamclip 1.9.3b2, and tried to convert the clips into other formats - like the Apple Intermediate Codec suggested in another post. Basically the clip seems to open, but it is blank - black screen, and no audio.
Interestingly, when I tried to open them in iTunes, I could hear the audio, but the image remained black.
I figure I need to know 2 things - what was the original format the video was shot in, and how he converted it - but this is a busy guy so I want to make sure I ask him the correct questions the first time - that is what I am hoping you can help me with... what do I need to ask the original videographer about the format...
from there I assume you can help me figure out why my Quicktime player won't recognize Quicktime videos, and what program I need to convert these files into a format that I can use in iMovie.
any help with this is greatly appreciated ... this footage is a Halloween production that I wrote, directed and produced (as well as co-starring in LOL). It is valuable family History so my kids can remember what a kook their Mom was

Actually, my friend would probably be willing to supply the video clips in some other format, if you can tell me the format that is best for him to give them to me in...
I am really new at working with video so I don't know what to ask him for
MAHALO!!

  • I Movie not importing from my Sony HDR HCI camera...why?

My HD camera is not importing into I movie. When I import, it records just fine and it shows a clip being recorded. When stop the import after 5 or 7 minutes, I MOVIE then shows a total clip of a few seconds up to a few minutes, but never the whole clip.
    What is wrong?

    Hi Bob
HD Cameras is not my thing But the import problems I got some ideas about:
    - most common problem is wrong mix of Mac OS + iMovie version + QuickTime version.
    I would use Mac OS X.4.8 + iMovie 6.0.3 + QuickTime 7.1.3
The amount of free space on Your internal hard disk (more than 20Gb +
space for the movie material) - and make Import to this.
Other programs working in the background can interfrere - then mainly FileVault
    Turn this OFF!

  • Quicktime files not importing

Hello there, I was unhappy with the resolution of quicktime files imported using imovie 09; so by advice on the imovie 09 forum I loaded the imovie 06 version onto my imac with a snow leopard operating system. Now, I cannot import my quicktime files into 06. It reads "unknown error". I have deleted the imovie 09 from my computer, restarted it, but with no better results. I am using the 10 version of quicktime player. Is this version of the quicktime player incompatible with imovie 06? or is that irrelevant? I have checked the quicktime files and they are all unlocked. Any advice would be greatly appreciated! take care, Paul

    Hello Clause,
thanks for clarifying that for me. I use a workprinter xp device for capturing and converting 8mm and super film; that is the source of the file. It uses a program called "capturemate" that allows each frame to be converted digitally. On the preferences, you can choose the file to be a quicktime movie or a DV stream. Oddly enough, some quicktime files I have been able to import, one or two at most after trying about 20 or so. I have many 3 minute 8mm films that have been converted to quicktime movies. Using imovie 09, it imported flawlessly, but the resolution was crappy. The couple of files I have imported in 06, the quality has been much, much better than 09; so I am bummed the importing is not working! thanks, Paul

  • I Movie not importing

I've been trying to import a section of a mini DV tape into IMovie but i movie doesn't seem to recognize the camera. I unplugged/plugged the FW cable from the Mac as well
The controls are greyed out in IMovie I've done this many times before with the same camera and haven't had this problem.
Also, when I tried to open IMovie from the dock, nothing happens.
So I opened it from the applications folder and it opens, but now this not importing thing has started.
Any suggestions on whats gone wrong here?
    Thanks

    Hi
    Test another FW-Cable.
Test Your Camera on another Mac so that DV-in still works OK
Toogle in iMovie pref: Play-back via Camera (on<->off some times)
Other ways to import Your miniDV tape:
Use another Camera. There where tape play-back stations from SONY
but they costed about 2-4 times a normal miniDV Camera.
If Your Camera works on another Mac. Make an iMovie movie project here and move it
over to Your Mac via an external hard disk.
(HAS TO BE Mac OS Exchange formatted - USB/DOS/FAT32/Mac OS Exchange WILL NOT DO)
(Should be a FireWire one - USB/USB2 performs badly)
    What Camcorder ?
FireWire - Sure not using the accompany USB-Cable but bought a 4-pin to 6-pin FW one ?
    Using WHAT ? :
    • Mac OS - X.5.4 ?
    • QuickTime version ? (This is the heart in both iMovie and FinalCut)
    • iMovie 8 (7.1.?) ?
    • iMovie HD 6 (6.0.4/3) ?
Free space on internal (start-up) hard disk ? (Others don't count)
Does Your Camera work on another Mac ?
Sorry to say it is to easy to turn the 6-pin end of the FW-cable 180 deg wrong.
This is lethal to the A/D-chip in the Camera = needs an expensive repair.
(Hard to find out - else than import/export to another Mac ceased to work
everything else is OK eg recording and playback to TV)
Delete iMovie pref file may help sometimes. I rather start a new account, log into
    this and have a re-try.

Hi Bengt W, I tried it all, but nothing worked. Your answer has been helpfull insofar as all the different trials led to the conclusion that there was something wrong with my iMovie software. I therefore threw everything away and reinstalled iMovie from the HD. After that the exportation of DV videos (there has not been any problem with HDV videos) to my Sony camcorders worked properly as it did before. Thank you. LKN 1935

  • Quicktime movie not displaying properly

    Hi,
Can anyone help?, I have inserted an mpg into a page using
the "plugin" symbol (is this correct?), and although it displays
correctly when i preview in browser, after i upload it to my server
and click on the link, it goes to the page, hangs there for a
while, and then displays a black vertical strip with numbers and
    symbols in it?.
Is this likley to be a server prob or do i need to do
    something with the file itself?
If anyone would be kind enough to help, then this is the

  • Help - Movies not importing in iPhoto 8

My avi movies that are larger than 20mb are not importing in iPhoto 8. Is there a limit on the size of file that can be imported?

People are reporting problems importing large avi files directly from their cameras. The workaround is to copy the file to the desktop and then import from there. If your camera doesn't show as a disk on the desktop (for instance Canon cameras don't) then use Image Capture to do this.

  • Why are my Quicktime movies not loading on my website?

I am having trouble viewing the Quicktime movies that I embedded on my website (www.karenychan.com).
I never had this problem until I upgraded to Firefox 4.
The videos would sometimes load, and sometimes the page would be blank with no indication whether or not it is in the process of loading. This is a huge problem when someone comes to my website and sees nothing. The only way to load the videos is to hit refresh, but viewers won't know to do that.
Please go through the videos here:
    http://www.karenychan.com/video_open_close.html
    and here:
    http://www.karenychan.com/installation_1.html
Click through all the pages and you'll see the problem happens randomly.
Is there a problem with my HTML code?
    Need help quickly!
    Thanks,
    Karen

You might have some sort of a trial version of Flip4Mac on your computer... I seem to remember that the old demo only let you export 20 seconds...
But my memory is fading in later years.
What are you using to export to wmf - Quicktime alone won't do it...

  • QuickTime movie not opening in QuickTime Player?

I recorded a video using PhotoBooth which now will not open in any of my players, QuickTime, VLC, HandBrake.
Finder tells me that it's a QuickTime Movie file, but QuickTime Player says "QuickTime Player can't open "Movie on 4-12-12 at 8.20 PM" because the movie's file format isn't recognized."
Why won't it open, and how can I get it to open?
Additionally, I recorded a different video this morning and it plays just fine.

If a Photo Booth movie is interrupted--by clicking the red "traffic light" button in the upper left corner of the PB window, by putting the Mac to sleep, by a sudden power disruption, etc.--the recording will usually be left in an unfinished, unplayable state.  There is no simple, free fix to create a playable movie from the unrecognized file.  At least two companies offer repair services/software--at a price.  Both offer free diagnostics to learn whether the interrupted movie might be recovered before you think about plunking down your cash.

  • Quicktime movies not being displayed online

    Hey
When i try to watch a Quicktime movie online it will not display the movie, it displays all the buttons and plays the sounds but the actual movie image itself will not play..
It will play the movie if its saved to my computer though.
I have the most up to date Quicktime player and i have tried reinstalling it but still no luck.

Install these two QT components flip4mac and Perian. This may help. Also there are some website that are not Safari friendly try the same website running FireFox. I use it for the sites that have video I can't run on Safari.

  • Movies not imported / recognized from my Kodak Easyshare Z712 IS

I post this new subject just to notice that from that type of camera.
So: movies from Kodak Easyshare Z712 IS _*ARE NOT SUPPORTED*_ by iMovie08 !!!!!
Type of the files are .MOV so that's why I am astonished !!
Putting different .MOV files into a converter give me that:
    - mjpeg, yuvj422p, 320x240 is supported by iMovie08
    - mpeg4, yuv420p, 640x480 is NOT supported by iMovie08

    mpeg4, yuv420p, 640x480 is NOT supported by iMovie08
If you separate the audio and video you will find the MPEG-4 video will correctly import/edit in iMovie '08. It is the µ-Law 2:1 audio that iMovie '08 will not import/edit. Easiest way to rectify the problem is to export the file using the "Movie to MPEG-4" pop-up and "pass trough" the video while converting the audio to AAC-LC. You can use 64 Kbps mono audio rate data and 44.1 KHz sampling rate. This is overkill for your source but will usually match your later output.
P.S. Don't have a Kodak camera so I would be interested in learning what audio compression was used with the 320x240 MJPEG video file that did import. Didn't realize the camera used different compression for each mode. You may be the first to have mentioned this fact.

  • Masked QuickTime movies not displaying correctly...

    Hi there,
I'm still a relative novice with Keynote, but am quickly learning that this is a seriously great application! I haven't encountered any real problems so far, except the one I'm about to describe - and I'd really appreciate any help you could give me with it!
Basically, I've made a masked QuickTime movie in the shape of a circle (as described here: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=QuickTime+Player/7.0/en/c3qt18.html) and then placed this onto one of my slides in Keynote. In the slide design view everything looks fine; the the movie is visible as a circular poster frame (and even plays as it should using the controls in the QuickTime inspector panel). However, when I go to "play" my slide it displays the movie as a rectangle. Obviously, the masking is somehow getting lost somewhere.
Is this a bug with Keynote, or am I just missing something?!
    Many thanks in advance.

the way my presentation is organised requires the movie to move in and out of the slide
The final effect you want might still be doable, as long as you don't think of the builds as having to take place on the same slide. If I understand what you mean by the movie moving in and out of the slide, you could have the opening still from the movie as an image, masked to the shape you want, move in on one slide, then undetectably transition to the slide with the cutout and movie underneath, then, when the movie is done, transition to a new slide with the final movie image as a still, again masked to the same shape, and have this move out. It would take three slides instead of one, but you should be able to achieve the end result you want.

  • Quicktime screencast not importing

    Hello everybody!
I am recording my screen for a screencast with Quicktime, which creates screenrecording.mov files.
Unfortunately, those files don't import into my Final Cut Pro 7.0.3.
What should I do to make it work?
Thanks for any input and best wishes!
    Pufi

    Research concluded.
screenrecording.mov files are made in QuickTime Player X.
    They do not work because:
They are H.264 files -unsuitable for editing due to the Long GOP frame structure.
They are read by QuickTime Player 7 as having a 12 frame per second playback rate -this is not an industry standard production specification as expected by FCP.
QuickTime Player X is fine for watching movies, useless as part of a professional production workflow.

  • Quicktime.mov not playing back from website

    iWeb 3.0.4
I downloaded three .MOV to my site. One is playing back ok, the other two are only displaying the QuickTime symbol. I did empty the browser cache, but to no avail. Did check with server and the .MOV files are in the html folder, but not playing back. I also re-uploaded the questionable .MOV files, but it still does not let me open the files on my site. site name : bodoholst.com
    thanks in advance

All three movies play OK for me.
The pages are slow to load as this method of adding them to the pages requires the movie file to download with the web page.
If you are happy to depend on viewers having the QuickTime plugin, this is a better way...

So that everyone can see your movies you really need to have flash fallback since there's still a lot of people around who don't have the QT plugin installed...

  • Quicktime mov when imported has blurry text / titles

    so...
When I click on the original quicktime file...(not within idvd) the file plays perfectly...perfectly crisp titles and text...
When I import the clip...into idvd...and click the preview button...the text is all jaggy and blurry...
What am I missing? I am essentially adding a file to an existing idvd layout where the other files already look fine.

What am I missing? I am essentially adding a file to an existing idvd layout where the other files already look fine.
And you know they look fine because you've tried them in iDvd's preview???
The way to test QT palyback is with apple's DVD Player app (not preview).
Where were the titles made? in iMovie? what version (6 or 7)?
you need to provide more info on you mac as well (as in the amount of available HD space on the boot volume) what file/s did you add. was the entire content edited w/in iM7 or another version? or did you use QT Pro? There's lots we need to know here before we can troubleshoot.

  • Quicktime Movies Not showing as Events

I recently upgraded from a PowerBook G4 running iMovie '06 to a PowerBook Pro running iMovie '11.  When I used to finish a project in '06 I converted it to Quicktime with no compression and stored it on an external hard drive, since I had only 80 gigs on my internal drive. I then trashed the original project, figuring I could always restore it by dragging in the QT movie.  When I received my new MBP I put all movies from the external on the internal, since I had plenty of space.  Unfortunately the QT Movies do not show up as events in iMovie '11. What gives?
Also some of the listings in the events have a "!" over them.  What does that mean?

If you are loading your Shockwave movie into a browser from your local HDD (instead of having the page served from the web) then you need to have a folder named "dswmedia" somewhere in the path for external files to load. Check the help docs.
