Quicktime no longer playing .wmv

Email attachments with a .wmv extension used to play just fine and recently they stopped.
I can save the attachment to the Windows disk in Boot Camp and they will open OK next time I switch out Mac OSX.
What happened? How can this be fixed so the video plays in the Mac side?

Flip4Mac is a playback component for viewing WMV in Quicktime. You have to download the component: http://dynamic.telestream.net/downloads/download-flip4macwmv.htm

  • HT3775 Quicktime no longer plays wmv files after recent update

after recent update, quicktime will not open wmv files. had no problem opening them up in the past. reinstalled flip4mac codec and nothing. don't want to use quicklime player 7 b/c need to use fast forward option that will not work with QT7. Any help is appreciated.
    thank you,
    Damian

I ended up on the phone with an Apple iPhoto expert after scheduling an appointment online (go to Apple support). He spent an hour or so diagnosing my particular problem and was able to fix it. I can once again view all my mov files in iPhoto. Since every computer is different, you might want to try that route. He was able to view my computer screen and direct me to do different things.

  • Quicktime won't play .wmv

I have a new macbook pro with leopard and I downloaded flip4mac which was supposed to allow me to play .wmv files with quicktime but when doing so I'm told this isn't a movie file and it won't open.
The free quicktime I had with my pc had a preferences option that would allow almost any video file type to open, but I don't understand why the mac version of quicktime doesn't have this feature and is much more limited.

Fortunately, all the necessary software for viewing various formats of video, are free. Here's the list, as I know it. Doesn't really take much to get everything working, but because of the many different forms out there, it is necessary to do something to get it all to work.
For WMV, as already mentioned in the other post, Flip4Mac is essential.
VLC for .avi and some other formats.
    Real Player
    Perian
    Adobe Flash
    Streamclip
    Various settings to make:
In Quicktime Preferences, under advanced, UNcheck Enable Flash, and under Mime settings/Miscellananeous only check Quicktime HTML (QHTM).
In Macintosh HD/Library/Quicktime/ delete any files relating to DivX (Perian already has them).

  • Quicktime no longer plays in Internet Explorer

My website was made with iWeb08 and everything worked fine but now after a quicktime update the quicktime will not play on the site. When the page starts I am prompted theat the page wants to install ActiveX Control for Quicktime which I allow and install. However, it either doesn't actually install because it continues to ask the question everytime I go to the website. I have Quicktime 7.6
Everything works fine using FireFox but not on I.E (7) (on my PC). It also works on my Mac using Firefox or Camino.
    What's wrong?
Please check it out at my site
    http://web.me.com/zymurg/Home_Page/Welcome.html
    Thanks

Thank you. I review it but it does not really seem to have anything to do with my problem.
I have had the exact same content on my site for the past year and it has worked fine in I.E. and others.
Suddendly I.E. is not working with Quicktime and I have made no changes.
It has something to do with Quicktime and iWeb and I.E. interface.
If iweb working with Quicktime in I.E. does not work correctly, I should not need to make code changes, the application will be no longer any use to me and I will no longer use iWeb. This is a compatibility and release (version etc) issue.
    Thanks for responding

  • QuickTime no longer plays certain MP4 files

After upgrading from 10.6 Snow Leopard to 10.9 Mavericks, I've noticed that all the MP4 files taken with my Samsung smartphone no longer play in QuickTime (or with Quick Look), whereas they played just fine in Snow Leopard. The MP4 files use the H.264 codec. Some other MP4s I have, which use the same codec, will play in QuickTime and Quick Look. I've also found some older MOV files (using the SVQ-3 codec) that don't play now.
Has anyone else encountered this? Is there any fix, or does it perhaps require an OS update? Since I skipped OS 10.7 and 10.8, I don't know what the situation was there.

Try downloading and using the QuickTime 7 from here: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL923 - it might have some of the older file support still working whereas the QTX does not.

You may have better luck in the Quicktime threads.

This post by martbr explains the situation well…

Try Quicktime player 7 (it's better if you have a QTPro 7 code)
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL923
It seems to support everything that it did before Mavericks (including Flip4Mac & Perian codecs), what is different is that the OS uses AVFoundation not Quicktime, the former doesn't support additional codecs therefore there is little hope of getting Finder previews for files with unsupported codecs.

  • Quicktime no longer plays my mp4's smoothly since i updated my system, any thoughts ?

I have been enjoying my Gopro Hero and playing mp4's on my Macbook. I updated the book from 10.5.8 to 10.7.5. With the upgrade Quicktime got upgraded to 10.1. All other aspects of the upgrade work fine however mp4s that played smoothly before are now unwatchable as Quicktime will not play them smoothly.
    Any thoughts would be appreciated.
BTW This is my first time here, i posted this in the wrong section earlier. Sorry.

Before I answer, let me provide a bit of history.
When iMovie was released, it was written in the "C" programming language. It stayed that way through v2.1.2. Then in v3.0 it was re-written in a language called "Cocoa". The result was a product that couldn't be used for more than a few minutes before it crashed or destroyed the video footage it was being used to process. It took several releases before iMovie resurfaced as something to be trusted.
Now Apple has done it again with Quicktime. This time the rewrite was from a collection of languags to "Objective C". And voila; we have "Mavericks" and Quicktime 10.1. And another period of time to avoid Quicktime "upgrades".
Personally I don't use OSX more than 10 hours a year and then for VERY specific tasks that I absolutely can't do in Mac OS 9.2.2. So I have no clever way to give you for reverting. My brute-force approach would be to erase an unused disk and install everything that you had on the original disk on the erased disk before you let auto-update loose on the ill-fated original one.
You might also ask in a forum that is specific to OSX. This forum is actually for the older stuff that was released before X showed up.

  • For some inexplicable reason Quicktime no longer plays a lot of my avi clips, this was not an issue a year and a half ago, any idea why and how to fix this? Also the clips no longer have a thumbnail, everything was fine till recently.

Recently I am unable to play AVI videos on quicktime that I have never had any problems playing before, the thumbnails of the clips also don't display. Has there been some change to Quicktime as there was never an issue since I've had my macbook pro from 2012 till present. Note some AVIs still work, the issue is more the fact the thumbnails don't display as I do have an alternative player that can play these clips. Any suggestions but mostly solutions are appreciated!

  • Quicktime 7.2 will no longer play specfic mp4 files

Quicktime 7.2 will no longer play specfic mp4 files that 7.1 and earlier versions play fine, But new mac running 10.4.10 will not let me install earlier version, these files where used and edited fine on similar spec mac running 10.4.9 (both intel)

    You did nothing wrong!
Quicktime has never played wmv files natively. You ned to download and install Flip4Mac WMV Player from  http://www.telestream.net/flip4mac-wmv/overview.htm  (Windows Media Player for the Mac is no longer supported, even by Microsoft)

  • Convert WMV files to MPEG  and/or  get Quicktime plug-in for WMV and AVI

    Hi Apple experts,
I need to convert some WMV files to MPEG format or something that will play natively on a Mac in QuickTime or iTunes.
I was advised that the VLC app that will convert WMV to MPEG4?... but the page at the URL below indicates that this version of VLC is a player and does not say anything about converting WMV to MPEG...
    http://vlc-download.com/download-vlc/?gclid=COrY_NKghKYCFQN7gwoduQy4qA
I would like to convert WMV files to MPEG so they will play in QuickTime or in iTunes on a Mac by just double-clicking them... for family members with Macs like me.
I am working on a PC where I am right now, but I have Macs at home and at work. I am on a PC for the time being at a friends place and I've produced a few .wmv files in Windows Live Movie Maker 2011. (Sorry Steve, it's just for a test).
QuickTime will not play WMV files, nor AVI files, but it indicates that it can use a plug-in to do so, but the QuickTime webpage for plug-ins that it takes me to doesn't have any plug-ins for WMV or AVI format files.
Of course the Windows Media Player plays the WMV and AVI files, but is there also a way to make them play in QuickTime or iTunes besides converting them?
    Thanks so much,
    numetro

    Hi QTKirk,
I would like to be able to just give my family these files on a CD for high-res viewing on a computer, in addition to the DVDs that I have made for their TVs.
Since I don't control what they install on their computers, they don't necessarily have Flip4Mac on their Macs like I do... I just want them to be able to play MPEGs from a file on a CD or on their hard drives by simply double-clicking them.
After working with the recommended VLC player that also allegedly converts WMV files to MPEGs, for 8 hours, I have a result with the 7th attempt that mimics the worst kind of modern digital art that I've ever seen... I wish I could plug in the screenshot of the MPEG video that VLC produced... completely useless garbage.
Are there any other suggestions for a converter that simply handles converting WMV to any kind of MPEG file?
FFE was going to be the one that I tried until I read a post about VLC... that turned out to be a waste of 8 hours of sleepless time.

  • Lately, Quicktime doesn't play anything.

I noticed Quicktime no longer plays anything. (I can use other applications for playback). I just checked and am still running QT 7.6.4, maybe that has something to do with it? I'm going to download, install and report back…

I downloaded the update and am good to go.

  • Quicktime X - Loading bar when playing WMV

What's the idea of the black loading bar when playing WMV? it takes forever! I've tried the latest flip4mac beta but instead of the usually preload bar with quicktime x the video starts playing straight away but there's a black loading bar that continues to load as the movie plays. It literally takes ages, even with small files. You can't fast forward to other parts of the movie until it's loaded.

I'm having the same problems using Quicktime X - yeah using Quicktime 7 works but come on...
I try to play a WMV file and you can't skip forward or advance the movie until the entire movie loads. I got rid of Flip4Mac since you don't need it with Quicktime X and had the same problem. I then installed the Flip4Mac Beta for Snow Leopard and same problem. Being unable to advance in WMV file blows.
Is there any update on this bug? Is it a bug? While off topic, has anyone else noticed that you can no longer tell Quicktime X not to show recent files. In other words, there is no Preference to tell it not to cache any previously watched movies. You literally have to clear the Recent menu when done watching a movie that you don't want others to see you've played. And why no more ability to see AV controls? I thought Quicktime X was supposed to be an upgrade.
One last thing... (sorry for the multiple subjects) but what is the point of trimming when you can't trim the middle of a movie? You can trim the beginning and end and not cut out a few frames in the middle. What's the point of having trim without trimming a portion of the middle of a clip and keeping the rest? Makes no sense.
The work around would be to trim the beginning. Save the file as trimmed firsthalf.mov. Load the original and trim the end as endhalf.mov, then use third part software to combine the two all to get rid of the center of a clip or movie. Am I missing here or does Quicktime X look half assed?
    Thanks

  • Can no longer play iTunes-purchased TV shows in QuickTime Pro 7

Had to reformat hard drive due to nasty virus/spyware I couldn't locate and delete (AVG, AOL spyware protector, SpyBot Resident, Kerio Firewall, Windows Firewall all failed to stop it from entering and those plus AdAware all could not get rid of it). Upon redownloading and installing software (iTunes with QuickTime) I can no longer play the TV shows I purchased at iTunes. Is it because I had to copy them to another drive/disk . . . and then copy them back to my hard drive? I've scanned the files with AVG, SpyBot, and AdAware and came up clean. I've changed the file association from iTunes to QuickTime and from m4v to mpg or something . . . and back again.
With every change and attempt I get a pink hazy video, but when I fiddle with QuickTime preferences and save the defaults that it keeps automatically resetting itself to, I can see clear video . . . until I reopen the file.
Help! I am tearing my hair out. I am not tech savvy and cannot find a solution on the discussion boards or elsewhere.
    Thanx bunches.
      Windows XP

Nevermind, I changed the metadata of the video file to "music video" instead of "TV show" and I am now able to add it to a playlist X amount of times under the video app.

  • I can no longer play quicktime mov files from a canon firestore

I can no longer play quicktime mov files from a canon firestore from an HDV camera that play on other macs and play in vlc. It happened all of a sudden. Files that I could play before no longer play. It seems to be something wrong with the quicktime codec management because the files do not play in premiere and final cut pro. In FCP it says: File Error: 1 File(s) recognized, 0 access denied, 1 unknown. These files work on other computers. I have four drives and it doesnt matter which file i attempt to open on each drive, these files are unreadable on this system. Please help. Possible issues might be a corrupted index, but i dont understand how that can go across four different drives.

Apple kindly updated Quicktime and rendered Firestore files unplayable. I think a recent update of iTunes was the culprit.
Solutions: What I did. Wipe the system disc. Re-install Snow Leopard. Re-install FCP7. Don't update Quicktime or iTunes to anything after Jun 2011. QT v7.6.6 is the last good version. That'll get your files back.
A colleague tried a different approach. For this you need a pre-July 2011 version of the file QuickTimeComponents.component.  It is in the system/library/QuickTime folder. Delete your current one and drop in an old one.
However if you're working with Final Cut X, I think you screwed until Focus and Apple work something out. My address is on my contacts page at teevideousadotcom if you need any further help.
