Quicktime not playing .mov files

i have a problem with quicktime. it doesn't play .mov files. if i try to play .mov files that are embedded in a .pdf file, a window opens but stays blank, although the progress bar moves. if i try to open the files in quicktime, there's no window, just the progress bar that moves. i run the latest version. i've already tried reinstalling - didn't help, uninstalling completely and installing - didn't help.
help?
many thanks!

Quicktime>Quicktime Player Preferences>Advanced
Click on the MIME Settings button.
In the next window that opens up make sure that Streaming-Streaming movies is enabled (checked).
While you’re at it make sure all the boxes are enabled by clicking on the corresponding triangles so that they are pointed down.
This will show the “hidden” boxes especially the *QuickTime Movie* box. This box will enable you to play .mov files.
Click the OK button.

Hi...I have the OS X v10.6.8 but my QuickTime is not playing .mov files. How can I fix this?
Depends of the specific kind of file you are trying to play. MOV refers to the file container. Any data compatible with the system used to create the file can be placed in an MOV file. If you don't have the same codecs available on your computer to play back the file or if your version of the QT player does not expect expect the encoded data to be in an MOV file container, then it cannot/will not play the file. Use the Finder Info window, media player Inspector/Information window, or a dedicated utility to determine what compression formats were used to create the MOV file and then install the required codec(s) if available.

  • Quicktime will not play .mov files since Lion installation

When using Quicktime 10.6, I am receiving the error message "...file could not be opened. A required codec isn't available." when attempting to open .mov files.  Prior to installing OS X Lion, there were no issues with playing .mov files.

I'm having the same problem. Using a clean install of Mac OS X (10.7) Lion and QuickTime 10.1.
    If I go to finder:
I can click on Icon's Play arrow and the Movie will play in the icon.
I can click on the file icon and press the spacebar and the file will play in QuickLook.
If I doubleclick on the icon to open the file in QuickTime, I get the "...file could not be opened. A required codec isn't available." message.
If I right click on the icon and click open with... QuickTime, I get the "...file could not be opened. A required codec isn't available." message.

  • QuickTime - "Not a movie file"

I hope this is the correct forum to post this question. So I had a TV station send me a drive with some footage on it. They're not on a Mac and couldn't export to ProRes, so I chose PhotoJPEG from their list of formate they could export. I've have good quality results with that format in the past and have exchanged that format with another shop that's running Avid and Fusion without any problems. Their file won't open at all, in anything. I'm running Snow Leopard 10.6.8 and was wondering if their file is too big for my system... 71 GB.
Instead of five or six clips, they sent me one mega clip. I can't imagine if the codec wasn't compatible, that I would get that error "This is not a movie file." Usuall would tell me I'm missing something or play the audio only. The file has a QT icon (maybe just because it has a .mov extenstion).
    Any advice is greatly appreciated.

    Thanks for the reply.
Ahh, I forgot to check that. It's a Windows NT File System (NTFS) format. What are the issues with grabbing a file from an NT formatted drive?

According to the Quicktime Pro manual it should.........and there is no mention of third party software needed. I was sold this product to burn my DVD collection and Quicktime cannot even play a DVD... Here is the manual text:
Opening and Playing Movies in QuickTime Player
You can use QuickTime Player to play media stored on your computer’s hard disk, a CD,
    a DVD, or the Internet.
To open a movie on your hard disk, a CD, or a DVD, do one of the following:
Â In the Finder (or Windows Explorer), double-click the file or drag it to the QuickTime
    Player application icon.
Â Choose File > Open and select the file.

  • Quicktime not playing .mov videos captured with my iPad2

I moved some videos that I took with my iPad to my macbook pro, but quicktime will not play them (.mov files). What's the deal?

On the camera and after the transfer from camera to computer the files ended in .tod, as they always have. I had originally exported them into H.264, but the video quality was fairly shotty compared to what I typically get when exporting to .mov, and I really need the better quality. My biggest question is really why QuickTime will not play the converted .mov files now when it used to. What's the deal with it?
You say you are exporting to MOV. However, as QTKirk previously pointed out, MOV is a file format and not a compression format. So we still have no idea what video format you are converting to when you select the "Export to QuickTime" option. If you are using the default MPEG Streamclip video compression format for this export option, then you are converting the TOD file video to the Motion JPEG A compression format. Although I do not have a problem using it, according to the Apple Web Site, Motion JPEG is supported by Snow Leopard but no longer natively supported by Lion.

  • AppleTV Not playing .Mov files that will play in iTunes

After Major Hard Disc issues I had to use a Data Rescue II to retrieve the files.
All seems fine now except Data Recover II converted all of the m4v to mov files?
They play fine from iTunes, but apple tv does is giving me an error that file format is not recognized or it just does not load...
    File Details are as follows:
    Kind: QuickTime Movie File
    Profile: Low Complexity
    Bit Rate: 158 kbps
    Video Dimesions:1280x720
    Video Codec: h.264
    Thanks in advance peeps!

    what's the framrate?
bear in mind that just because something is in itunes, does not mean it is appletv compatible.
also, have you tried simply changing the extension back to .m4v ?

  • Quicktime not playing .avi file!

I have been trying to figure out why it doesn't play for a day now. The thing is, it only doesn't play this .avi file, others I have can play it. It says it needs another component to play it and directs me to the extra quicktime downloads page, but I don't know which one I need. I tried downloading the XviD component, but now it says "Movie cannot be opened. Mac OS Error -1." I need help!

I just solved this issue on my machine. Something in the Perian bundle also conflicts with Intel core MacBooks. I finally resolved the issue and avoided the white screen by removing ALL 3rd party QT plugins (including Perian) and restarted. I was then able to view the AVI files and avoid the white screen. When I added back Perian, I could again not see the files. So, the solve is remove ALL QT 3rd party plugins. I suppose you can add Perian back after you have used the files you require, but be aware there is still an Intel conflict within Perian for certain AVI files.

  • QuickTime wont play .mov file

Does anyone know why QuickTime wont play a .mov file from an iLearn 08 training DVD. It would not import into iMovie, which is what the file was for, iMovie training. When I try to play it tells me that QuickTime does not have the software to play the clip then directs me to the quick time components page. The file has a 1920X1080 dimension and it has a HDV 1080i60, Integer (Big Endian) codec. I have downloaded various codec packages for quicktime such as flip4mac, perian, etc. Can any one help me out?

    Hi,
I actually did contact the publisher and they were very helpful. Here is a copy of the email they sent me. It should solve your problem. Good luck!
Thank you for contacting Peachpit Press. We apologize for the errors with
these files. The QuickTime clips used in chapters 5 and 6 were encoded by
the author using the HDV 1080i60 codec. iMovie 08 only works with the 1080i
codec. At the time this book shipped, iMovie 08 was not available for
    testing.
New files are available at peachpit.com here:
    http://www.peachpit.com/store/product.aspx?isbn=0321502671
Click on the Updates tab and the page will refresh, showing you the
replacement files. You may also request a replacement DVD.
    Sincerely
    Dominic

  • Quicktime not playing .wav files

I cannot get .wav files to play.
I have installed Flip4Mac Beta for snow Leopard (twice) and even reinstalled Quicktime Player 7 just in case that would work since my Quicktime 10 (51) does not handle .wav files. This is a big problem.
Is there a solution since I think it may be something with my upgrade to snow leopard and incompatibility issues and hopefully this is an issue being worked on by apple.

    "I have installed Flip4Mac Beta"
BETA=buggy. Suggest that you post your concerns over on the Flip4Mac forums.
There may be solutions regarding how to make their beta product work w/QT & Snow Leopard.

Does he not need tools like XDCAM transfer (or XDCAM browser) from Sony ?
midnightraj said he had converted the mp4 movie to mov, and that this mov file played (albeit dropping frames) inside FCP X, so my perspective was in working with content thas was already inside FCP X.
I have no specific knowledge of xdcam, and it may well be that using the xdcam transfer tool is the best choice.

  • IPhoto 11 is not playing .mov files

I am haing some problem with iPhoto 11 and was wondering if anyone can shed some light on my issue
    1) mpg files play fine.
    2) Small file size .mov files ONLY play the audio.
    3) Large .mov files from my iPhone 4S cause iPhoto to freeze.
    4) I can find the original files via Reveal In Finder so I know everything is linked together correctly.
If anyone can help me fix this issue it would be appreciated
    John

    Yes that's  QuickTimeX.
    As a Test:
Hold down the option (or alt) key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library'
Import a few videos into this new, blank library. Is the Problem repeated there?

  • Itunes not playing movie files

    Hello,
I recently replaced my hard drive and restored my computer with a time machine back up. However, I have changed the preferences in Itunes so that the Itunes Media folder is still on the old drive (which still has OSX 10.6.3, connected as an external drive).
My Problem is Movie, TV Shows, and Video Podcasts are not playing in itunes. This includes videos I try to import and videos already in the itunes media folder.
Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

First, back up all data and then uninstall "DivX" according to the developer's instructions.
    Then try this:
VideoLAN - Download official VLC media player for Mac OS X
