Quicktime not playing .mp4 files

I recently upgraded my computer to windows vista last week.
Today I hooked my computer to my LCD Tv and wanted to watch one of the .mp4 movies I had on my storage hard drive.
I had to install iTunes and quicktime again, so I did that.
When everything is finished I try to open a .mp4 from my storage hard drive and it does not show. Only the sound plays.
I try different programs until I try Firefox and IE. The video and sound works there. but i cannot get it fullscreen.
So what is the problem with quicktime?
I have the updated itunes and quicktime.
Thanks for all of your help.

Do the files on the hard drive have the QuickTime icon?
What menu option do you have when you right click on the file? Can you choose to "Open With" and pick QuickTime Player?

  • Nokia n85 not playing MP4 files

    Hi,
I never used the video podcasts, well I just tried to use some nokia video podcasts and they were in MP4 format. To my surprise my phone says it can not play the format and so it just played it as the audio file. I was reading at GSMArena.com and looks like N85 does support MP4 files.
Can any one help me on this? How can I play MP4 files on my phone?
    Thanks,

Well, podcasts are mainly encoded in AVC@640x360 or 480x320. N85 plays AVC only at 320x240 resolution or lower. It has nothing to do with the container, in this case .mp4.

  • NEW - Quicktime not opening .mp4 files

I posted this in another topic, but want it to be seen.
I am having a similar problem. .mp4s are not playing. Used Handbrake to create an .mp4 file. It plays fine on every system but the one I need it to play on. Quicktime 7 won't play any video, just a white screen like it is missing a codec. I haven't had this problem before, and nothing has been recently installed that would effect Quicktime. Is there an easy way to reinstall the codecs? I've reinstalled Quicktime several times with no effect, recreated the .mp4 file several times, everything else plays fine. The .mp4 plays in Compressor, iTunes, and, oddly enough, Full Screen mode in QT player, but not in the regular mode. Any ideas?

These are the downloads and the settings you need in order to view/hear pretty much everything:
Assuming you already run OS 10.4.9 or above and have Quicktime 7.2, and are using Safari 2 or 3, download and install (or re-install even if you already had them) the latest versions, suitable for your flavor of Mac, of:
    RealPlayer from http://uk.real.com/player/
Flip4Mac WMV Player from http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/player/wmcomponents.mspx (Windows Media Player for the Mac is no longer supported, even by Microsoft)
    Perian from http://perian.org/
    Adobe FlashPlayer from http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/download/download.cgi?P1ProdVersion=ShockwaveFlash
In Quicktime Preferences, under advanced, UNcheck Enable Flash, and under Mime settings/Miscellananeous only check Quicktime HTML (QHTM).
In Macintosh HD/Library/Quicktime/ delete any files relating to DivX (Perian already has them).
    Now repair permissions and restart.
The world should now be your oyster!
You should also have the free VLC Player from http://www.videolan.org/ in your armory, as this plays almost anything that DVD Player might not.

  • PowerPoint 2010 requires Quicktime to play MP4 files

In PowerPoint 2010 MP4 videos do not play. It gives the message quick time player is required. We have VLC installed and mp4 is set as default for VLC .
We do not want to install  Quick time.
    Looking forward for a response

    Hi,
Please see the two articles, they said that:
Videos in the .mp4, .mov, and .qt formats can be played in PowerPoint if the Apple QuickTime player is installed.
Compatible audio and video file formats in PowerPoint 2010
Add a QuickTime video (.mov, .mp4) to my presentation
We may try the work around: Convert MP4 to PowerPoint more compatible video format like AVI, WMV, ASF, MPG.

  • Finder cover flow not playing .mp4 files

Recently I found the option to play video files while in the cover flow view in a finder window (click on the right pointing arrow that appears when hovering over the thumbnail).
This week when I try playing a video (.mp4 files), I can see that the video is playing but it is not displayed. I know it is playing because I can hear the sound track, can see the reflection of the video below where the display of the video should be and the progress circle works.

Anybody else seeing this? Anyone have a solution?

This was fixed in the 10.6.4 update.

  • Quicktime not playing .wav files

I cannot get .wav files to play.
I have installed Flip4Mac Beta for snow Leopard (twice) and even reinstalled Quicktime Player 7 just in case that would work since my Quicktime 10 (51) does not handle .wav files. This is a big problem.
Is there a solution since I think it may be something with my upgrade to snow leopard and incompatibility issues and hopefully this is an issue being worked on by apple.

    "I have installed Flip4Mac Beta"
BETA=buggy. Suggest that you post your concerns over on the Flip4Mac forums.
There may be solutions regarding how to make their beta product work w/QT & Snow Leopard.

  • Quicktime not playing .avi file!

I have been trying to figure out why it doesn't play for a day now. The thing is, it only doesn't play this .avi file, others I have can play it. It says it needs another component to play it and directs me to the extra quicktime downloads page, but I don't know which one I need. I tried downloading the XviD component, but now it says "Movie cannot be opened. Mac OS Error -1." I need help!

I just solved this issue on my machine. Something in the Perian bundle also conflicts with Intel core MacBooks. I finally resolved the issue and avoided the white screen by removing ALL 3rd party QT plugins (including Perian) and restarted. I was then able to view the AVI files and avoid the white screen. When I added back Perian, I could again not see the files. So, the solve is remove ALL QT 3rd party plugins. I suppose you can add Perian back after you have used the files you require, but be aware there is still an Intel conflict within Perian for certain AVI files.

  • Quicktime not playing .mov files

i have a problem with quicktime. it doesn't play .mov files. if i try to play .mov files that are embedded in a .pdf file, a window opens but stays blank, although the progress bar moves. if i try to open the files in quicktime, there's no window, just the progress bar that moves. i run the latest version. i've already tried reinstalling - didn't help, uninstalling completely and installing - didn't help.
    help?
    many thanks!

    Quicktime>Quicktime Player Preferences>Advanced
Click on the MIME Settings button.
In the next window that opens up make sure that Streaming-Streaming movies is enabled (checked).
While you’re at it make sure all the boxes are enabled by clicking on the corresponding triangles so that they are pointed down.
This will show the “hidden” boxes especially the *QuickTime Movie* box. This box will enable you to play .mov files.
    Click the OK button.

  • Quicktime not playing Quicktate files

I recently joined QuickTate but the files aren't playing on Quicktime. I've installed quicktime and done a repair/install twice. Nothing.
I've tried going into the settings and adding other file types, but that hasn't helped.

    Hi,
Have a look at http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93199 re AVI files.
Download and install VLC Player, it should handle your AVIs. My experience is that VLC will handle most things that QT won't.
    Have fun,

  • Playing mp4 files on iPad

Hi All, this a desperate cry for help before I finally junk my new iPad: I am currently enrolled in an online program running on the Adobe Connect platform. The multimedia files (mp4, pdf etc) can not play on the iPad despite several attempts. Any explanation to this and suggestion on what to do?

You need an app to play those files....I am pretty sure. I play mp4 videos just fine on the app Goodplayer...the older version! The currently available Goodplayer app may not play mp4 files, since they had a dispute (exhorbitant fees) with Dolby, who banned their software use on Goodplayer and several other apps. I understand that there is an app available at the app store that has Dolby software, in that they collaborate with Dolby in some way. Be sure to check capabilities and limitations before you buy any such app. I don't know about pdf files.

    You can also use VLC

It woks very well, can read almost anything, and also lets you do conversions to other formats.

Hmm . . . comes with a Utility MPEG2 Component ML app with no explanation of what it's for?
The utility app is an "assistant PKG installer." It allows Lion and Mountain Lion users to install the older QT MPEG-2 Playback Component installer PKG file which is not allowed to run on its own under Lion or Mountain Lion since these operating systems already have a QT X only MPEG-2 component embedded in the QT embedded structure. Without this utility you would have to either copy the component from an older system to your Lion or Mountain Lion system, use Pacifist for installation, or manually open the PKG contents and transfer the component to the appropriate component folder.
As to your "discussion" regarding the playback of AVI file types, there are really only two strategies here:
    1) You can add component support so that QT can play the files natively or
    2) You can convert the file contents to compression formats that are natively compatible with the unmodified QT component configuration.
Each user should decide for his or her own self which approach best suits their needs for a particular source file. In most cases, conforming the system's codec component configuration to play the source file directly results in higher video quality since no transcoding takes place but this strategy will not work if a codec which is required is not available for the user's operating system. On the other hand, converter utilities tend to support more built-in codecs and are easier to use since the user does not have to concern him or herself with the nature of the particular source compression formats but at the risk of some potential loss in visual quality. As to what converter to use, once again this is a matter of personal choice. In the case of commercial converters like iSkysoft, the codecs are built in while MPEG Streamclip accesses the host operating system's QT codec component configuration. I personally prefer the free HandBrake app for AVI, MKV, TS, MTS, and M2TS conversions since it has an exceptionally full-featured X.264 GUI with some user options that 97% of users are likely to never use.

Hi...I have the OS X v10.6.8 but my QuickTime is not playing .mov files. How can I fix this?
Depends of the specific kind of file you are trying to play. MOV refers to the file container. Any data compatible with the system used to create the file can be placed in an MOV file. If you don't have the same codecs available on your computer to play back the file or if your version of the QT player does not expect expect the encoded data to be in an MOV file container, then it cannot/will not play the file. Use the Finder Info window, media player Inspector/Information window, or a dedicated utility to determine what compression formats were used to create the MOV file and then install the required codec(s) if available.

  • I thought quicktime plays .mp4 files

I downloaded quicktime to play a file extension with a .mp4 extension and quicktime says it wont play and there is nowhere to download nothing to make it play. How do I play .mp4 extensions? I tried downloading like 20 programs that are suppose to play .mp4 files and none of them worked.

I have the same problem, When I download video from the net they are mp4. They would play at one time and now they don't. I have qtpro
