Quicktime opening WMV. files
When I try and open WMV. files that should open in Windows Media Player, it opens them in Quicktime in the browser window. How do I change the settings so it plays in Windows Media Player?
Another easy way to change file type associations is to right click on a file, click Open With... then chose the program you want to use to open the file with, and then on the bottom of that page, make sure that the check box is selected. It should say something like "Always use this program for this file extension." Or something to that effect.

Can't open WMV files in Quicktime since Snow Lep upgrade.....
I Can't open WMV files in Quicktime since Snow Leopard upgrade
I get an error message saying 'Quicktime player must be installed to run this application'
This is happening on both of my macs
Any help appreciatedI had this problem. Double clicking the WMV file produced the message you had. However, if I open by dragging the WMV file onto the QuickTime X icon in the dock it did indeed open.
I then looked at the WMV's Get Info window and found that it was set to open in WMV Player by default. Obviously I do not have WMV Player installed. The drop down menu on this setting did have QT Player as the other option. When I changed the option to QT Player as default the "Change All" button became active. Previously it had been greyed out. Things have been OK since, but I have not tried it on any new WMV files. -
Can't open .wmv files in Quicktime after archive and reinstall of OS
After recently archiving/reinstalling OS, I can no longer open .wmv files in Quicktime. "The movie could not be opened". "The file is not a movie file" is the error. This applies to newly downloaded as well as previously downloaded and played files. Qtime version is 7.6.4. Changing extension to .mov doesn't work. Any assistance appreciated.
Reinstall Flip4Mac.

Can't open WMV files in Quicktime. How can I reinstall Quicktime?
For some reason I am unable to open WMV files in Quicktime even though I have Flip4Mac Player Pro (WMV files played fine in Quicktime until recently).
ANY help would be GREATLY appreciated!Quicktime X is a great little piece of software. However, Quicktime X is very finicky on which codec/file format it can decode/play.
Luckily, there are DOZENS of alternative video/media players and extensions available for the Mac. Some of them are even FREE. Some of the better FREE ones include...
PERIAN (quicktime extension)
http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/22923/perian
QUICKTIME 7.6.6
http://support.apple.com/kb/DL923
VLC Media Player
http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/5758/vlc-media-player
NICEPLAYER
http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/15136/niceplayer
... And if none of those work, there is a possibility that, that video file may be corrupted. -
Keep getting error code 2048 when trying to open wmv files, says realplayer cannot open with the installed version of Quicktime, any suggestions?
wmv is a Windows Media format. I don't know why Realplayer is coming into it since that deals primarily with Real format files and maybe a few generic formats.
You need
Free Flip4mac QuickTime player components - http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/player/wmcomponents.mspx
After installation a new Flip4Mac pane will appear in System Preferences. Make sure you set the boxes to ensure that it will play WMV files in Quicktime.
or play the files with VLC
VLC media player - http://www.videolan.org/vlc/ - general media player that plays just about anything.
While you're at it you might install:
Perian codecs for Quicktime - http://www.perian.org - plugins to add functionality to Quicktime for playing additional audio and video formats
Quicktime audio problems, Perian, VLC - http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=9013669 - read note about uninstalling prior DIVX support before installing Perian.
Perian doen't do WMV but it's handy to get many things to play in Quicktime.
Note, if these are protected WMV, nothing on a Mac will play those (unless you also have Windows installed). -
Time Machine backing up huge files after opening wmv file in QuickTime
Good evening to everyone;
I have noticed that after I open wmv file (or any file that needs conversion) in QuickTime; the next TM back up backs up 10+ GB to my Time Capsule. Can anyone pls explain to me where can I find this big file so I can exclude it from the back ups?
And maybe why are they even created?
Not sure if it is relevant but I also have Perian 1.1 and Flip4mac latest version installed, which lets me open all kinds of files in QuickTime.
Thanx a tonMight be that the Quicktime cache is hiding the data. In the Users>Libraray>Caches>Quicktime>Downloads, you'll probably see a pile of items. I've never gotten rid of all of them, but you can give it a try. Post back if you find anything interesting out.

Quicktime 10.1 does not open .wmv files
Hi all,
I got a new imac running Lion and Quicktime 10.1. Not only can't I open .wmv files sent to me (I used to be able to open them fine with Flip4Mac on my old imac running Tiger), but now trying to open them crashes Quicktime. I have tried downloading the latest version of Flip4Mac- no go.
I have been reading about an older version of Quicktime. Should I be downloading that?
Thanks for any help.Quicktime X is a great little piece of software. However, Quicktime X is very finicky on which codec/file format it can decode/play.

After years of using QuickTime with Flip4Mac to open .WMV files, suddenly it won't work. Not sure if this is a QuickTime or Flip4Mac issue, but thought I'd post here first. I have the most current version of both apps. FWIW, the only thing I've done recently (since last successfully viewing a .WMV file) is install 10.6.2, which shouldn't be the culprit or it would be headlined all over the internet. Here's what I get when trying to open a .WMV file:
"The document “xxxxxx.wmv” could not be opened"
Thanks for any suggestions.Unfortunately, the latest version of QuickTime does not have the ability to export using third-party plug-ins, however Apple has made QuickTime 7 available to install alongside QuickTime X. You can install it from the Snow Leopard install disk or by running a Quartz (*.qtz) file.
QuickTime 7 will install to your Applications/Utilities folder. -
QT10.1 will not open .wmv file after upgrade to 10.7.4
Hi Qt 10.1 will no longer open .wmv files after upgrading to 10.7.4. I have the latest version of flip for mac. They will opwn in QT7 pro but does anybody have a fix for this problem at all? Thanks in advance.
I'm having the same issue, but do not find a 3ivx codec in the mentioned QT folder. I do, however, have these codecs listed in that folder:
AppleGVAHW.component
ApplePiletVideo.component
AppleProResDecoder.component
AppleVAH264HW.component
QuartzComposer.component
QuickTime3GPP.component
QuickTimeComponents.component
QuickTimeFireWireDV.component
QuickTimeH264.component
QuickTimeIIDCDigitizer.component
QuickTimeImporters.component
QuickTimeMPEG.component
QuickTimeMPEG2.component
QuickTimeMPEG4.component
QuickTimeStreaming.component
QuickTimeUSBVDCDigitizer.component
QuickTimeVR.component
Could ANY of these be causing my wmv files (or my Flip4Mac) to be corrupt and unable to work? I appreciate any insight you may have. -
Unable to open wmv files using Lion. Windows media player doesn't work. Are there any suggestions.
ThanksLynnie Marie ---
macfriedchikkin's reply would make sense to you if you were trying to open a camera, but if you are trying to view streming media from a web site that is a different story. It helps to be very specific about what you are tyring to do on these forums.
I belive you would go into Firefox Preferences menu and tell it to use VLC as the application to play WMV files. I'm still running Tiger, however, so I can't tell you if it the latest version works wel that way. The Tiger version doesn't seem to, but a lot may have changed since then. (I'm only just getting around to installing Leopard next week now that there are too may apps I can't run on Tiger. ) Perhaps someone else on this forum can better help you set up the player in your browser.
Or you can cut out the middleman and give VLC the direct video URL:
Choose Open File from the File menu and paste in the URL of the video, say,
http://azul.streamguys.com/auduboncal-1
or http://azul.streamguys.com/auduboncal-2
Your media should play this way. Dont forget to save the playlist for later.
I'l keep investigating on my end, and yes, I'm also encouraging certain people who are streaming windows media in to switching to a different format

How can I open .wmv files in a browser on my MacBook Pro?
I know that a person that owns a Mac can open .wmv files in third-party programs such as Flip 4 Mac (Flip Player), but is it possible to open .wmv files in a browser?
Thanks,
KarenYou may open word processing documents using Apple's Pages. Numbers may open spreadsheets. Nothing appears to open databases, however.
If you have access to an older system that runs AW6, then you can export your documents to a compatible format for newer applications. -

I am unable to open wmv files even after having downloaded flip 4 mac. I know the files are are not damaged because they open and play on my other mac (off of external drive). Are there any other settings adjustments in preferences or anywhere else that I need to make to open these files? Any advice would be much appreciated.

Problem with opening .wmv files in QuickTime since Snow Leopard upgrade
Until upgrading to Snow Leopard any .wmv files would open automatically in QT when double clicked.
I now get an error message which says "QuickTime Player must be installed to run this application".
I can open the file by launching QT(pro) and opening it from within the player - kind of a long way round.
Any suggestions what the fix might be would be gratefully received
ThanksHi,
try upgrading your Flip4mac plugin to the new Beta version which supports Snow Leopard.
