Quicktime or Flip4Mac or both?

I want to convert Mac QT .mov file to a format that can be viewed on a Windows PC. Which format is easier to work with and yeilds good to excellent viewing results on the Windows side. Also, do I need Quicktime Pro, Flip4Mac or both...or can I just use the Export .avi and/or WMV option in iMovie? Sorry, but as you can see, I'm confused. I plan to burn the final file format to a CD for Windows user to view.
THANKS!!!

Sooo, please correct me if I'm wrong. It seems from what you said, that the easiest way for me to send a Mac QT .mov file to be viewed by a Windows user via Windows Media Player (or even PowerPoint) is to use Flip4Mac Studio to convert my QT .mov to a .wmv file?
Not quite. What I'm saying is, if I send a single file to everyone in my family, the .wmv file is the only one everyone can play. I personally prefer the H.264 codec, but it is too restrictive in terms of both player and platform requirements for everyone in my family. On the other hand, the .avi file container is simply too old and has too many possible codec configurations to satisfy everyone at any given time. If all your viewers have QT 6 or 7 Players, then you can probably use the MPEG-4/AAC format to provide viewable files of reasonable size and quality directly from iMovie -- especially if they are to be delivered by server directly to their players via either the "Open URL" or as reference .qtl files which are easily e-mailed.
So just forget QTPro, iMovie, etc..?
QT Pro is the simplest work flow since it can open many different QT compatible A/V formats. On the other hand, there is no need to purchase QT Pro if you already have access to QT tools/components from within iMovie. (The .wmp codec is accessable from within iMovie.) The only major drawback here is having to import/convert files for use with iMovie. If you are using a DV file source, then this isn't really a problem. If, however, you are using other file formats as your source (e.g., "muxed" MPEG), then you must first convert these formats to DV files for use in iMovie which requires the QT MPEG-2 component and/or a third party MPEG based application.

I am trying to listen to xm radio online. The site is telling me that I must download the Windows Media Components for Quicktime by Flip4Mac. Has anyone done this? Is it safe to install. Anything by Windows makes me nervous.

Don't edit the wmv in fcp...convert the wvm to what ever your editing codec is in FCP. Your making things worse (on yourself) by editing in what ever codec the wvm files are...
I convert a lot of second hand video files with the Apple Intermediate Codec to edit in FCP. I set up FCP to that codec (Apple Intermediate Codec ) and to what ever else the video file properties are...then there no rendering.
Unless you apply a filter or something else to the video clip (in FCP). Then you have to render that portion of the video clip, goes without saying.
I use Mpeg-Streamclip to convert files to another codec. It's fast, free and a topnotch converting program. There is all so a batch converter too, save time.

On my mac I have both Quicktime X and Quicktime 7 pro. Both applications seem to be crashing quite often lately. This happens when playing all files types. I notice it more with .flv file. It usually happens when i grab the time slider bar and try to move it. The apps will freeze and I have to "force quit" to get them to close. Sometimes putting the computer to sleep and waking it up helps. Is there a way to remedy this?

  • Versions of QuickTime and Flip4Mac?

    Good morning.
    I recently upgraded to 10.5.8.
I have been unable to use .wmv files since then.
What is the optimum version of Flip4Mac for use with 10.5.8 and QuickTime in a PowerPC Mac?
    Thanks for your time!

    Thanks for your reply.

  • Quicktime - ASF - Flip4Mac - OSStatus error -19160

Hello. I was previously unable to play any ASF programmes on Quicktime until I downloaded Flip4Mac version 2.2.11.1 a month ago. More recently I downloaded the recommended Mac Updates (possibly also including one for Quicktime, but my Installation log doesn't seem to indicate so) and now I am unable to run any programme on Quicktime. There is a message saying "Operation could not be completed. (OSStatus error-19160). Anyone have any suggestions? I quite urgently need to access a streaming file for work.

Try posting in the QuickTime for Mac forum. You'll be more likely to get help there than you will here in the QuickTime for Windows forum.

  • Windows Media Components for Quicktime by Flip4Mac 2.2.2.3

    Hello to everybody.
After checking the Flip4Mac Update area, it stated that the version that had been working fine since Nov. 08 was outdated and would I like to update to the newer version 2.2.2.3, I first investigated the System Requirements.
    All looked good.
I have MAC OS X 10.3.9 and 7.5 Quicktime Pro.
    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=915D874D-D747-4180-A400 -5F06B1B5E559&displaylang=en#Requirements
After downloading and installing, I went to System Preferences to click on the Icon Flip4Mac had placed there the first time last year, which I thought then was really cool, I tried to open Flip4Mac ... System Preferences crashed!
After investigating the other icons, accounts, security, etc., I relaxed! All worked
    Any ideas?
    Below is the original website.
    http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/player/wmcomponents.mspx

Well, I found a temporary fix (while Flip4Mac figures out why they state their updates WILL work correctly with the running systems they say will...10.3.9 and Quicktime Pro 7.5, but don't.)
FROM FINDER: REMOVE EVERYTHING WINDOWS MEDIA AND FLIP4MAC.
DO A DISK UTILITY PERMISSIONS REPAIR AND A RESTART.
GO TO THIS APPLE PAGE: http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/video/flip4macwmvstudiopro.html AND DOWNLOAD 2.1.2.72
    (my old version was 2.1.1.11)
DO ANOTHER DISK PERMISSIONS AND RESTART.
...THEN THOSE WHO HAD A CRASHING SYSTEM PREFERENCES OR BROWSER WITH NO W.M.V.PLAYER AT ALL, HAVE SOMETHING.
Please note, I did try to put the new 2.2.2.3 over this upgrade 2.1.2.72 from what I had before 2.1.1.11 thinking there sometimes is a "sequence of events" involved,
    but it DID NOT WORK.
    2.2.2.3 DOES NOT WORK.
I hope that I have helped someone with this post.
**Please Mr. Klaus, I would rather you not reply to my literature.**

  • Quicktime X & Flip4Mac Installed, Not functioning on IMAC bought in August

Every video that is for Quicktime will not play (Older versions?).
Message says; "No Quicktime Player Loaded" on my IMAC.
Tried updating and loading older version of quicktime with no success.
This is true b4 Snow Leopard as well as after loading Snow Leopard.
This is my first MAC, help me out here, Please!
I have been bragging how new and fantastic world MAC is.

Insert the Snow Leopard DVD and wait for it to mount on your Desktop.
Run the "Optional Installs" package and you'll see the QuickTime Player install option.
Flip4Mac is not yet compatible with QuickTime X (or Snow Leopard) but their Site does offer a "beta" download for 10.6.1 users.

  • Getting "OSStatus error -19160" when trying to play videos from Web browser

I have Snow Leopard on a MacBook Pro (all silver aluminum), and am having a problem playing a video feed online. I get the message: "OSStatus error -19160". Nothing turns up in Google searches on that particular number. I've checked both QuickTime and Flip4Mac. Both are the latest. Any idea what this is? Is there a place that lists all OSStatus errors?

    Greetings,
I encountered error -19160 while attempting to stream a site that had formerly worked just fine.
I'm using Quicktime 10.0 and I've installed Flip4Mac 2.4 on a Mac Mini with Intel processors.  Earlier in the day I opened FireFox while streaming (I close FF after QT begins streaming) - Quicktime ended the stream at that point and wouldn't pick it back up.  I thought it was just a case of "don't do *that* again".
When I attempted to view the same stream later that day I was met with the error -19160 message.  Fiddled around with settings, booted soft & hard but nothing eliminated the error UNTIL
I dragged the WMV player icon from the Applications folder to the Trash bin - soft booted, then chose "Put Back" from the Trash menu.
    Everything now works splendidly.
    Hope this helps somebody!

  • Two new problems with the Quicktime Plug-in

I recently discovered two new problems with the current Quicktime Plug-in for Mac OS X.
First, the Quicktime Plug-in is unable to stream Quicktime media in any internet browsers other than Safari.
There is just nothing on the spot where the embedded Quicktime player should be.
Second, the Quicktime Plug-in only shows the message "The operation couldn't be completed. This file is not a movie file (-2048)"
everytime it should work together with the Flip4Mac Plug-in. The thing is, when facing a webpage where a wmv or wma file is
embedded, there only shows that error message on the spot where the player should exist. I first thought that it would be a
problem with Flip4Mac. So I uploaded about this problem on telestream.net, only to hear that the error message above belongs
    to the Quicktime Plug-in.
Both of these problems did not happen at all only three weeks ago. The embedded Quicktime player showed up without any problem
in my Firefox and Opera, and wmv or wma files were streamed successfully through the Flip4Mac and Quicktime Plug-ins.
Then, suddenly, after some point, these two problems began to occur, and there is no information on how to solve them on the web.
I obviously tried uninstalling and reinstalling Quicktime. I even completely erased the hard disk of my Macbook, and reinstalled the
whole Mac OS X. But the problems still remained. I borrowed another Macbook from my friend to check whether these problems
occur in other computers, and they did occur in my friend's Macbook as well. So they are definitely not the matter of my own Macbook only.
I think these might be the problems with the new Quicktime Plug-in 7.7.1.
Please check about these problems and solve them on the next version of the Quicktime Plug-in.
I will give you a couple of hyperlinks so that you can check about the problems directly.

  • .wmv file play like streaming files in Quicktime.

I have downloaded some .wmv files, and tried to play them in both Version 10 and the Quicktime 7 Pro utility. I'm on an iMac using operating system 10.6.5 and I have flip4mac installed. The movies open, but seem to be streaming from the internet, and cannot be fast forwarded or edited. I have looked in the Quicktime and flip4mac preferences, but there doesn't seem to be any settings that address this. Help!
    Peter

The movies open, but seem to be streaming from the internet, and cannot be fast forwarded or edited.
If by this you mean the file opens and the playhead starts moving but the "progress bar" is still cacheing data, then this is normal if the data in in an WMV file container. QT has to partially decompress the data for playback/use. If you want to avoid thios delay, you can save the data in its partially decompressed format to an MOV file but it will take up more hard drive space than the WMV file version. If you allow the file to decompress or load the MOV version and you still can't "scrub" or FF the playhead, then you may have a problem. As to editing/converting the file, as Limnos points out, the free Flip4Mac "Playback" component does not allow you to do any real editing or converting of the content and you would have to purchase one of the decoder, bidirectional or advanced codec packages to do this.

  • QuickTime Live Broadcast issues.

After upgrading to 802.11n, I have had a problem watching Live QuickTime broadcasts in both wired and wireless modes. Video / audio drops out constantly and what video I do get, is severely pixelated and is totaly unusable.
I have re-installed my 802.11g unit and the problem goes away. I have never had this problem untill I replaced my AirPort Extreme "g".
I have tried port mapping QuickTime Server with no change.
I have tried everything I can think of with no luck. Am I the only one with this problem? Did I miss a setting somewhere? How is this problem corrected?
Thank you all for your assistance.

i have the same problem ... and earlier posts here haven't yielded any solutions. See:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=4535843&#4535843
btw: the same computer works fine at the local Apple Store (which uses the 802.11n Extreme) ... but not with the 802.11n Extreme at my home. The Apple Store folks say that aside from assigning specific channels, they have only "default" settings. I tried changing my channel to something other than Automatic ... but it doesn't help.
Since the earlier post - I've set-up the older 802.11g unit and got screen captures of all the settings. Then went back to the 802.11n and ensured that the set-up of the two units are identical (to the extent there is 1-to-1 correspondence).
also: two of my systems also have the latest releases of Quicktime and Flip4Mac. They have problems of their own! (See their discussion forums). But my older iBook has the same software that has been used without issues for the past several months. The only "new" item in the system is the new 802.11n base station.

  • HT3775 can't play wmv file on quicktime?

I can't play .wmv files on quicktime.  I installed both QuickTime MPEG2 and Flip4Mac WMV hoping that this would solve the problem but it did not.  When trying to play any audio .wmv file I get an error box stating "the document (filename).wmv could not be opened.  The movie is not in a format the QuickTime Player understands.  You may need to install additional software to open this type of file".  Anyone know what I might need here?

Hmm, Perian should provide flv playback in Quicktime. Maybe you need to update Perian? I used to always use Perian but since upgrading to Lion I have not installed it and now rely on VLC for non-apple standard media playback. Deluxe can handle the flv-format.It will convert flv to mov. Hope it helps

  • Quicktime Pro software missing.

I have a .mov file I am unable to view in Quicktime Pro 7.1 for Windows.
When I try to run it, I get the following error:
Some Quick Time Software is missing... etc.
When I ask it to continue, it brings me to a Quicktime Components page.
Which one do I need? There are many to choose from and some just don't look like they relate.
Also, I cannot play this on my eMac running 10.4. Same thing.
Under movie properties, the Sound Track is WMA2 and the Video Track is WMV3. You'd figure a PC running XP Pro would have the necessary codecs?
Thanks for any insight to this.
    Mike
    Athlon 1800   Windows XP Pro

The reason it may play on a Mac is that those users have installed http://flip4mac.com component which allows playback of WMP formats via QuickTime.
Flip4Mac is a Mac replacement of Windows Media Player for Mac. Microsoft no longer makes a Mac version of Media Player.
Is your Media Player version 9?
    *Edit*
We were both typing at the same time.
Use the Mac that has Flip4Mac "Pro" to export as WMP file (.wmv) and it should work in Media Player.

  • PREVIEW and QUICKTIME slow to load in SNOW LEOPARD

I've just started having a problem (after years of working perfectly) where files are taking FOREVER (up to 30 seconds anyway) to load in both PREVIEW and QUICKTIME.
This occurs both when opening files fully with double-clicking - and when wanting to Preview by just pressing the space bar. I utilise the latter frequently to audition samples (as I work with music/Logic). This used to be an instantaneous process but can now take up to 30 seconds with the "Loading Preview" message before finally loading.
It seems to be happening with all files, irrespective of size or type (ie mp3/WAV/AIFF/MOV etc)
Very ocasionally - and apparently randomly - a file will load quickly.
I've tried reparing Permissions, running Disk Warrior, reinstalling Preview, uninstalling Perian, opening another User account (in case there was a software conflict of some kind), and cloning my System onto a brand new HD with lots of free space. But none of these have made any difference.
Anyone have any other ideas as to what this might be?
    Cheers in advance:)

yeah there definitely appears to be some kind of issue (with core audio?) when i check out Console as this happens.
i've looked at the subsequent diagnostic report but not sure how to interprete it.
wold it be useful to post it here?

    Are you on Windows?
I've seen one of the apple software updates corrupt my Quicktime install.
Uninstalling it, or iTunes, or both, then redownloading it from apple and re-installing fixed the problem. You can download Quicktime independently of iTunes, but you can't get iTunes without quicktime. Make sure both are gone from Add/Remove programs.
I would give that a shot.
