Quicktime playback problems - Mpg4 (h.264/aac) out of sync only in QT

I'm having some trouble with Mpg4 playback in Quicktime for windows. All my videos play fine in QT on a mac, they play fine in VLC on PC. But playback on QT for windows goes in and out of sync. It doesn't matter what Mpg4 codec I use, it happens with all of them.
I've tried uninstalling itunes as I had read that could create this problem, but that didn't fix it. I tried adjusting the audio output device latency because I read this could effect the sync as well. The only way we've found to fix this is to bring the file into final cut, take the original file out of sync by 3-10 frames and export with the adjusted audio. But I can't do this for every video, I have thousands and thousands of files for distribution. I need some solution for the player. Has anyone else encountered this problem and found a way to fix it?

Is the delay very slight...with the audio coming before the video? Are you using home theater audio separate from the TV's built-in audio? If so, more than likely, your TV is performing real-time video processing like rescaling, color & contrast adjustments, etc. This often takes several milliseconds, so the audio actually precedes the video. The TV's audio system is adjusted to compensate, but sending the audio to another system bypasses this feature.
Sorry to say that this type configuration can only be fixed with outboard digital delay. Some home theater boxes have this feature, otherwise, one can buy an outboard digital delay box. I actually have two...one on DTV/TiVo and the other on the DVD player.
This particular problem is usually evidenced by very slight delay of video...perhaps 2-3 video frames...which would be in the 30-90 millisecond range. This would be the equivalent of a news anchor's single syllable.

  • H.264 Audio Out Of Sync in Media Encoder. Help Needed.

    I use Adobe Premiere Pro CS3 and I find that the best way to get a good video with low file size is by Exporting to Media Encoder and using
    the H.264 codec. Note, this is the codec by itself NOT the one used with the Quicktime preset.
    Here's the problem : When I export these files, they always end up a few frames slower than what I have on the timeline and the audio is always
    out of sync by just less than a second. Although it's a very small difference, timing is crucial in editing when it comes to dialogue as I'm sure anyone who uses Premiere understands.
    I have tried tweaking with the settings. I've used VBR 1 Pass, 2 Pass, CBR, Progressive Scan, Upper and Lower fields first, all of that.
    Has anyone else had this problem, and if so how was it solved?
    IF not, can anyone give me a good solution as to how I can get good video quality + low file size. The benchmark is a 45second video takes a maximum of 5MB, Quicktime video. Any suggestions or any methods you find better? Any ideas on how the guys at Apple Trailers manage to do the job so well?
    All the help is appreciated. Thanks, guys!

    Hi Jeff, I've experimented with a bunch of formats to find the root of the problem, but for this conversation I'll use a Quicktime (.mov) example.
    Source Footage Settings :
    Video : 640x268, Millions of colors. FPS : 23.98 Data Rate : 1.15mbits/sec
    Audio : AAC, Stereo (L R), 44.100 kHz
    Sequence Settings :
    Video : Quicktime Movie, Pixel Depth : 640, Frame Rate : 23.976
    Audio : Source Audio Format : 44100 Hz - 16bit Stereo. Project Audio Format : 44100 Hz - 32bit floating point - Stereo
    Average Data Rate : 141KB / second
    Pixel Aspect Ratio : 1.0 (Square Pixels)
    Export Settings :
    Main Concept H.264 Video, Custom Preset.
    Video : Frame width & height is same as source. Frame Rate : 23.976. Field Order : None (Progressive) Pixel Aspect Ratio : Square Pixels
               Profile : High. Level : 3.0. Encoding : VBR, 1 Pass. Target Bitrate [Mbps] : 1.3. Maximum Bitrate [Mbps] : 1.5
    Audio : AAC, Stereo, 44.1 kHz. Audio Quality : High. Bitrate [kbps] : 192. Precedence : Bitrate
    Multiplexer : MP4. Stream Compatibility : Standard
    NOTE : I have done the same with .avi files as well with the same audio lag issues. As for the file above, it's a trailer off Apple Trailers which also uses the H.264 encoding. To prove that there is a lag, I imported the 'rendered' file back into Premiere, placed it on a seperate layer on top of the original footage in the timeline and pressed play. As expected, there was a difference in audio playback and video was about a frame late.
    Any ideas? Thanks!

  • Export Premiere CS6 (h.264) - Audio out of sync with several players...

    I've had this problem before, but unfortunately it happened again.
    I exported an mp4 with h.264 compression. The file plays perfectly with VLC player and everything is in sync. Of course, in Premiere (CS6) everything is in sync as well.
    It is also synced correctly with Windows Media Player, as long as you don't 'scroll' or skip parts in the video. If you do that, the audio gets out of the sync...
    With QuickTime it is completely out of sync. Vimeo plays it back perfectly, with YouTube it is out of sync...
    How is this possible? What is causing this?
    I thought that it could have had something to do with the video and audio tracks not being of the same length. I have already mastered the audio tracks into 1 track (wav) and made the same length as the video tracks, before I exported... On previous projects I have have not done that, and the audio was slightly out of sync there as well on Youtube.
    What did I do wrong? Any settings I could have done wrong? Is this a bug of Premiere? What can I do to prevent this?

    Yea, that sounds plausible but from the other hand, this happens only with (my) exported clips from Premiere...
    When I download or watch clips from the internet that are mp4 files with h.264 compression, there is no problem. I just skip through a file of 4GB and it plays back fine. Also the clips from my camera (which are h.264 files) play back fine with everything in sync.
    Also, I almost never see sync problems on YouTube.
    There is something else going on here... It must be.

  • Export to ME to H.264 Audio Out of Sync

    HELP!!!!!! Adobe Premiere Pro CS3, 3.2 version Windows XP. For sometime now I have had to go back into Premiere and shift the audio forward so it is many frame ahead of the video when viewing in program monitor so that when the project is exported to Media Encoder CS3 and then to H.264 for streaming on Vimeo the audio will be in sync with the video. I spend hours and hours editing the project so it plays perfectly in Premeire and then have to spend hours exporting to test to see if the video is going to play in sync with the audio. But NO!!!!!
    I have seen many, I mean Many of posts all over the net about the audio sync problems and how Abode just ignores the problem. WHAT UP with THAT????  Come on guys!!! You take our money and sell us a product that doesn't work?? At least you can fix the bug and or tell us how to create a work around!!! COME ON! I guess I should have bought FCP instead. NAB is coming up, a perfect time to corner the Adobe clan with a video camera and get their answer to fixing the problem. Once I do, I'll post it online... but then again, the Audio may be out of sync??? Unless they give me the magic fairy dust to sprinkle on my computer to make CS3 export properly. (I hear that this problem still exists in CS4, CS4 and even CS6!!!)  HELP!!!!! I need to be able to export into Media Encoder and output to H.264 perfectly each time!!!!

    Thanks Jeff. I'll add a bit more detailed information.

    Results: audio on h.264 is always out of sync, 14 frames ahead of the video
    Has this always been happening? YES. I have reinstalled this CS 3 on two different computers with freshly installed OS win XP with SP3. Always the same results.
    Comment: Surely there has to be a preset for H.264 to output perfectly to YouTube or Vimeo with out all the beta testing and re-editing. Is there another software available to convert to?  The export to movie function seems to work perfectly. It's just when exporting to Media Encoder. This leads me to believe that the problem is inherent to Media Encoder. If I have to buy a software converter from QuickTime movie to h.264 so be it but, you would think this should not be the case.

  • Audio problem: large avi file / audio out of sync getting worse towards the end

    Hi,
    We have an 11 hours avi file (about 500GB) that plays fine in Windows Media Player and is in sync.
    When we import it into Premiere Pro CS6 audio and video tracks are of the same length. At the beginning of the video sound is fine and in sync as well. But at the end of the video the audio is out of sync by a couple of frames (but still the same length). We tried different things and the only thing that worked was setting the audio buffer size to maximum. Now the audio is in sync at the beginning, middle and end of video. But of course editing is impossible like this (if you hit pause the audio needs some time to stop).
    Any help or suggestions are welcome.
    Cheers

  • Audio out of sync, only with 720p movies?

    Hello,
    I've just bought my iPad. I've converted some movies to 720p with Handbrake. The strange thing is that the audio is running out of sync towards the end of the movie.
    Now, i thought it was maybe the source. But the converted MP4 on my Mac Pro plays perfectly and is in sync, straight till the end. So it has to do something with the iPad.
    Does anyone has an idea?
    Thanks!

  • Latest quicktime playback problem

    I just recently updated to the latest quicktime player. When I play videos or podcasts(which I never had a problem w/the last version)the video colors are inverted. In other words the video plays fine but the image is blown out. This problem goes away if I have the cursor over the image, but when you do that the player controls come up and cover up the video. Is anyone else having this issue?? I tried to go back to an old restore point to get back to my older version of quick-time but that didnt work. Some of the files were not there and I got an error message. If you have any suggestions it would be much appreciated.

  • Latest Quicktime, playback problems

    I've just installed snow leopard.I opened a movie in Quicktime, and pressed the fast forward button. The movie plays back at 2x,4x,or 8x normal speed. The same applies with rewinding i.e. -2x,-4x and -8x. The problem is, I can't get the movie to play back at normal speed, at all. No matter what buttons are pressed, or in what order, it just won't play back at normal speed. I quit the program, and re-opened it, and re-opened the movie, but it still won't play back at normal speed.

  • Quicktime playback problem on webpage

    Hi all,
    I am trying to integrate quicktime movie on my webpage using the following code:
    <EMBED SRC="http://www.mysite.com/video.mov"
    HEIGHT="391" WIDTH="500"
    CONTROLLER="true"
    AUTOPLAY="true"
    SCALE="tofit"
    TYPE="video/quicktime"
    PLUGINSPAGE="http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/"
    />
    It plays well if the video.mov is smaller than 2GB. However, when the video.mov is larger than 2GB, a question mark will appear over the quicktime icon and the video clip can't be played.
    Does anyone know how to fix this?
    Thanks!

    Why are you attempting to use a QuickTime file of that size?
    It could take hours to download on a fast connection, all day on DSL and two months using dial-up.
    You use of only the embed tag would prevent PC's using Internet Explorer from even viewing the file and your page code needs more work:

  • Receovery data problem. Plugged was taken out during sync process.

    I just plugged in my Iphone to download some pics and videos and sync my phone to my MAC and I accidentally pulled out the cord during the sync. Now all my information is gone. There is an option to restore its original settings. Should I click restore? Right now a pic of the cord is on my iphone and no other information. Help please. How do I get my info back onto my iphone?

    First thing done when you sync is an iPhone backup. Plug your phone in, iTunes running, right-click the phone in the left device pane & select "Restore from Backup". Select your most recent backup. Follow this by syncing your iTunes content back to your phone.

  • Out of sync audio when trying to capture from digital 8 camera to quicktime, please help

    Just trying to capture hi 8 tapes using a sony digital 8 dcr-trv355e pal into quicktime;
    great clear video but  audio becomes out of sync like a bad kungfu movie,
    contacted apple they tried to help, but they dont really understand issue
    there are lots of people out there that are trying to digitise old analog video;
    I have fcpx and imovie they both play the old video via  the digital 8 camera but cannot capture;
    that is why using quicktime; thanks!!

    Yes i think its something to do ith the fact its a wmv file, when i use mpeg footage it exports fine.
    basically, no matter how long the video, the video is out of sync...its weird
    i've decided the best thing to do is leave quicktime and export using windows media instead, that seems to give me a better looking picture witha small file size anyway
    thanks for your help though!

  • Quicktimes in sync but project out of sync

    I just re-captured clips at 10801 25 Apple ProRes 422 HQ and they play back in sync in Quicktime, but in my timeline they are out of sync- does anyone know why this could be? The sequence settings match the clips. Thanks

    i exported a qt movie from my sequence and it looks in sync! so I am assuming the computer i am using is too slow to play back the right time code from the timeline and all will be fine once i get this on a faster computer.
    thanks-

  • Audio and video out of sync on short recordings

    I've scanned the discussions and see that alot of posters are experiencing
    the same problem I'm having which is recording quicktime movies
    and getting audio and video out of sync.
    In most of those posts the responses seem to be that the problem gets
    bad if you're making a long recording. I'm experiencing that, but...
    ...I'm also having the same problem on really short recordings...less than a
    minute. I've coming video and audio out of my cable box, into a SONY DSR-11 VCR, then firewire out of the deck into the computer, recording the movies with Quicktime 7.1.6.
    I know it's coming out of the cable box and then out of the SONY deck via firewire in sync because when I log and capture through Final Cut Pro, audio and video are in sync in preview and playback. I don't want to use Final Cut Pro to capture the movies because I want to end up with MPEG4, and I'd have to go through an extra conversion process out of FCP.
    Any thoughts on why even short recordings through Quicktime are out of sync?
    Thanks.

    I'm having similar problems transferring VHS video to Quicktime. Another problem I'm having is when I transfer a VHS video to iMovie and then export the video to H.264 format, I have similar sync problems, even though the iMovie seems perfectly in sync.
    I'm going to try to transfer several alternative video formats (video from my cable DVR, Video from live TV, and video from a digital mini cassette to try and figure out whether the VHS format is the culprit. Will keep you posted.

  • Wav file gets out of sync with sequence

    Hello,
    I have a 30min sequence that I sent the dialogue to an audio engineer for clean up as an OMF. He sent it back and it gets out of sync about the first 2 minutes or so. By the 30th minute the audio is out of sync about 47 frames.
    I've tried multiple things, couple of observations: the WAV file's waveforms in the timeline show that all audio is in sync, yet when I playback in the timeline audio its out of sync. I even opened up the wav file on Quicktime player and timecodes from quicktime player and my video timeline do match, its only when i place the wav file in the timeline that it appears out of sync.
    I've sent the whole sequence to Soundtrack Pro as a multitrack project. When I playback there it is in sync with the video!!! I export back and still same issue...
    Editing on a Macbook Pro OS X 10.8.4 2.6GHZ Intel Core i7 on FCP 6.0.6.
    The sequence settings: Apple ProRes HQ 25fps. Audio settings: 48 KHz, 16-bit, channel grouped.
    Wave file (sent by audio engineer): 16bit 48.000KHz. Data Rate: 1528.21 kbits/s
    Any help would be amazing!
    Thanks,

    One possibility
    You need to have your easy setup have a frame rate that exactly matches your sequence settings BEFORE you import the audio file.  Doesn't seem to always cause a problem, but it can happen.

  • AirTunes to Apple TV is slightly out of sync with other AirTunes devices

    I've noticed that AirTunes playback through Apple TV is slightly out of sync with the audio output from my Macbook and the AirTunes via my two Airport Express Base Stations. The audio from Apple TV is about a second delayed, causing a mismatch between AirTunes playback on the TV and my Macbook and other AirTunes devices. Thus, my Macbook and AEBSs are in harmony, but Apple TV's AirTunes is about a half-a-beat delayed.
    Has anyone else noticed this problem or know of a way to remedy it?

    This is quite intriguing. I would expect that an amplifier would be able to decode the digital signal with no noticeable delay, otherwise DVDs etc would play with audio out of sync when using the digital output of the player. In fact, rather the opposite is true with new larger screens where it is the video that's slow and the audio needs to be delayed.
    So this would point to the Apple TV's digital output being delayed vs. it's analogue output and I'm not too sure I understand why. It receives digital information over the network and then takes longer converting that to SPDIF (its digital output format) than it does converting it to analogue. Odd.
    Perhaps an expert can advise us on this.
    This would however explain why the Airport Express can exhibit the same problem and why some people don't experience any delay - they are probably using the analogue output of their Apple device.
    What we need in iTunes when selecting devices to play from is an additional control for each with a +- setting that can adjust the delay of each output device so they can all be brought in sync. Since the delay appears to remain consistent that ought to solve the problem for everyone once and for all.
    I'll try some tests of my own and see if my problem is indeed this digital delay.
