Quicktime Player fails to launch.

I can't get QuickTime to work whatsoever. Nothing happens when I click on it. What am I doing wrong?

What am I doing wrong?
Are you saying the app doesn't launch or that the movie player window doesn't open?

  • ITunes/QuickTime Player Failes to Launch

I am wondering if downloading the latest update was a good idea. When I attempt to launch iTunes I receive the following error:
"iTunes cannot run because it has detected an problem with your audio configuration."
Havins seen some other posts make reference to QuickTime Player settings (granted they were for an older version of iTunes) I thought I would open it up and take a look around. When I did this it failed to launch and produced the following error:
"Runtime error. This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way. Please contact the application's support team for more information."
Everything worked quite well before the software download. Anyhelp would be greatly appreciated.

yep, a problem with your QuickTime generally causes the "audio configuration" iTunes error. (itunes uses QuickTime for audio and video playback.)
the following document may be of some assistance:

  • QT Player Fails at Launch on MAC

Due to problems caused by Adobe products I had to rebuild my system from scratch. I reformatted a hard disk in internal drive bay 2. (Quad 2.5 GHz G5, 8.5 gig RAM). I bought the new package with MacOSX, iLife and iWork and installed OSX from scratch on the disk. I also installed iLife and then iWork followed by a fresh install of Adobe CS3 Design Suite. I used the Migration Assistant and moved the remainder of the old hard drive applications.
1.) iTunes works fine (movies play great)
2.) FinalCut Pro Studio seems to work fine. (Movies play and I can edit.)
3.) CInema4D works fine and I can animate and create QT movie files.
4.) I can play movies in Safari - they work fine.
QuickTime player fails! Version 7.5.5 came with Leopard on the 10.5.6 disk
QT will NOT load, it dies at launch. It throws this error: The application unexpectedly Quit. Maybe related to 3DxQuickTime plug-in.
I used Software Update and updated to QT 7.6 from Apple ... it still failed at launch.
I have reloaded the OSX from the Leopard DVD 3x no go still refuses to work.
I have trashed the prefs file in users/library/prefs folder
I cannot find anything related to 3Dz and Quicktime on the system disk
    HELP!
I have reloaded the OSX from the Leopard DVD 3x no go still refuses to work.
Everything related to QT keeps working just the player won't work.

Thank you everyone for the help.
I did try the drive check and it passed without error but did find two minor problems with permissions on JAVA - over all effect did not help the QT Player problem.
Yes I am migrating MANY files from my old account - I have only two accounts on the system ADmin and mine. They both failed the same way, but both have equal access to applications.
THanks but I just can't do another full install right now, I have been through the process 3 full times withe same results. I am getting faster at getting the odds and ends fixed up. Although the Migration Assistant does move many of the old files, many of them must be re-initialized with serial numbers and do not come up working automatically.
You are correct the 3DxQuciktime plug-in is where the problem appears to be. I did remove everything I could find related to "3Dx" from any and all folders I could find but that didn't help either.
BUT - it's now FIXED! I did a re-install of the 3Dconnextion software, and it also restored QT to functioning. Apparently the Migration assistant moves something not named with "3Dx" but that is somehow associated with the software. It loads last just as Q is about to "go live", and then caused QT to fail. It's back now and QT works fine, although I have no idea where or what it exactly is. I don't even have the mouse device installed just the software.
Anyway I ma back up and working, as soon as I get a new drive (on order) to re;ace my number one sot drive I am going to make an image of the boot system and keep it there for Quick Re-installs.
By the way the original problem was caused by Adobe. I have had their CS3 suite for some time and purchased a copy of Photoshop Elements 6 to help some other Mac Club members, as I did not have it or use it. I use the full version of Photoshop. I downloaded the Elements 6 fro the WEB site and did not get a CD or DCD with the product. When Illustrator failed (who knows why) I tried to reload it from the original Adobe DVD, it got half way through the load and then the CS3 disk told me to inset my Elements 6 disk - hard to do since I didn't have one and why the **** should it want it anyway as it is NOT related to the CS3 suite.
Anyway I could not restore the original software as it refused to bypass the request. I e-mail an called Adobe about the problem. According to them my "Free Support" was over and I could pay them an hourly fee to fix the problem that they caused. After three attempts at this I told them they could shove it and put their software where the sun-never-shines!
So I removed Elements (uninstall with their software) from my hard disk and tried to re-install - still no good, CS3 kept asking for the Elements 6 original disk. Finally I had to uninstall all of of the CS3 suite and install from scratch. I took the opportunity to clean up a bunch of fonts in the process and somehow broke the CS3 serial number verification process. It finally installed but then I could not enter the serial number, so I punted and started from scratch, new OSX etc etc.
Anyway thanks after a week of head aches I'm back up and operational.

  • How do I stop Quicktime player from auto-launching after I've exported a movie from iMovie 10?

How do I stop Quicktime player from auto-launching after I've exported a movie from iMovie 10?
It's really annoying for Quicktime player to auto-lauch!

It may not be that simple David. They're using a "server" and some of the Apache software may want to launch QuickTime at boot.
This isn't really a QuickTime question. It's a sever question best answered in those Discussion pages.

  • Quicktime Player failing to initialize properly......

When trying to open Quicktime its quoting - The application failed to initilize properly - Although I have reinstalled the app several times. I use it with itunes and when i attempt to open itunes it says that Quicktime is not found, reinstall Itunes. I have done both of these things and still these two errors messages appear - Any suggestions??

QT does not support the export of sound from muxed mpeg files nor the editing of such filesQT Mpeg Limitations
This freeware will allow some editing of mpegs without re-encoding and will allow you to export both sound and video to other formats, such as DV steam for iMovie.Mpeg StreamClip
To find the codecs (video and audio) open the movie in QT Player and then open the MovieInfo window or press Command-I.
If you open a muxed mpeg and then use "Save" the icon will say it is a movie but MovieInfo will reveal that it is in fact a muxed mpeg and subject to the QT mpeg limitations The same thing will occur if you display a muxed mpeg in a browser window and then use "Save as Quicktime Movie" in the controller dropdown menu. To be sure that the format is not altered always use "Save as Source". That way foreign file formats not native to QT will not be saved with a QT wrapper around them. That kind of wrapper may not interfere with playback in QT but can foil attempts to open the file in other applications.

  • Itunes and quicktime both fail to launch, giving error reports

Getting a little ticked because ive been trying to get itunes to properly work.
To clarafy, i've done the following to try and fix this problem
    Uninstalled itunes and quick time
    Re-installed
Uninstalling just quick time and it almost loaded until it gave me the audio codec issue(i know i need quicktime for itunes to even work)
I've installed older versions of itunes (same issue)
I've tried loading up itunes on a different user account
Now i don't know what left to do (besides trying the msconfig, im in the process of doing that right now)
    I need help guys
I'm really close to just taking back the ipod nano and getting something more windows compatable

Have you ever installed any of the following:
ACE & K-Lite mega codecs package, QT alternative, Storm codec, WinAVI video converter.
They are known to cause crashes with Quicktime. If you have one of them, you need to uninstall it.
You can get a clue to the presence of a problem codec by trying to run QUicktime preferences from the control panel. If you get an error message like this:
"An exception occurred while trying to run "C:\Windows\system32\shell32.dll,Control_runDLL "C:\Windows\system32\QuickTime.cpl"
You could have a problem codec, QUicktime does not install Quicktime.cpl in the system32 folder.
Then try the following method for removal of iTunes and associated components and Installer cleanup:
Download a fresh copy of iTunes and the stand alone version of Quicktime
    http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/win.html
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
Download and install Microsoft Installer cleanup utility, there are instructions on the page as well as the download. Note that what you download is the installer not the program – you have to run it to install the program
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301/
Now use the following method to remove iTunes and its components:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93698
If you hit a problem with one of the uninstalls don't worry, carry on with the deleting of files and folders as directed in the method.
    Restart your PC.
Run the Microsoft Installer Cleanup Utility. (Start > All Programs > Windows Install Clean Up)
Remove any references you find to the programs you removed - strictly speaking you only need to worry about those programs where the uninstall failed.
    restart your PC
Install the stand alone Quicktime and check that it works.
    If it does, install iTunes

  • QuickTime Player won't launch

No problem. (You're not the first person to do this and you most certainly won't be the last.)

  • QuickTime fails to launch: "Unable to load nib file"

QuickTime has decided today that it will no longer launch. When I look at the message generated in Console it says:
"QuickTime Player[300] Unable to load nib file: MainMenu, exiting"
This has been happening since I updated my copy of Fetch. I have tried reinstalling QuickTime but it hasn't helped.
I am running QuickTime Pro 7.1.6 with DivX and Flip4Mac, both of which were installed some time ago and everything has been running fine until this morning.
Any ideas what I should do next?
    Thanks.
    iBook G3   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   QuickTime Pro 7.1.6 with DivX and Flip4Mac 2.1.1.70

Did you repair permissions & restart after the
    update?
I tried repairing the permissions and QuickTime still failed to launch; however, I didn't think to restart the machine. But then I fired up TechTool and it found problems with the volume structure, repaired it, and all is good now. So I'm not sure if TechTool fixed the problem or if it was eventually restarting after repairing the permissions.

  • Applescript for quicktime player 7 in 10.6

I've been using an applescript that can take a bunch of movie clips and merge them into a single file. (see script below) now with 10.6 and quicktime x. this script no longer works. Can anyone help me to get quicktime player 7 to launch and start doing it's trick. any help most appreciated.

The scripts below work for me, using Mac OS 10.4.11 and QuickTime Pro v. 7.6.4.
Note that my version of AppleScript (v. 2.1.1) doesn't recognize application QuickTime Player 7. Hence, application "QuickTime Player" was used throughout. Your needs may vary; if you can or must use the "7" by all means do so.
The first is based on the script Craig Williams posted in this thread: http://macscripter.net/viewtopic.php?id=31674 (in post #6). I modified the script a bit so that a new file is created on the front end, and the merged file gets written to it once the script finishes:
set file_name to text returned of (display dialog "A new merged QuickTime file will be created on the desktop. Please choose a name:" default answer "Enter Name")
    tell application "Finder"
      try
      set make_file to make new file at (path to desktop folder as string) with properties {name:file_name & ".mov"}
set new_file to make_file as alias
      on error
display dialog "A file with the name " & "“" & file_name & "”" & " already exists on the desktop. Please try again." buttons {"OK"} default button 1 cancel button 1 with icon stop
      end try
    end tell
    set theCount to 1
set theFolder to choose folder with prompt "Choose the folder with QuickTime files you want to join together."
    tell application "Finder"
set theFiles to every file of folder theFolder
set totalFiles to (count the theFiles)
repeat with i from 1 to totalFiles --to 1 by -1
set thisfile to item i of theFiles as alias
                        --QT Pro
      my mergeFilesUsingQT(thisfile, theCount, totalFiles)
set theCount to theCount + 1
      end repeat
    end tell
    delay 1
    tell application "QuickTime Player"
      tell document 1
      rewind
                        delay 0.5
save as self contained in new_file
      close
      end tell
    end tell
    on mergeFilesUsingQT(thisfile, theCount, totalFiles)
              tell application "QuickTime Player"
      activate
--the first file only gets copied
                        if theCount = 1 then
      open thisfile
                                  delay 0.5
      tell document 1
      select all
                                            copy
      end tell
      close document 1 saving no
      else
--these files get the previous file added to it and
--then it is copied to be added to the next file
      open thisfile
                                  delay 1
      tell document 1
      set x to get duration
      set current time to x
      paste
      select all
                                            copy
      end tell
      end if
      end tell
    end mergeFilesUsingQT
My own version, below, creates a new file and then opens a temporary QuickTime document to which each file is copied in turn. Once copying is complete, the temporary file is written to the file that was created at the beginning of the script:
set file_name to text returned of (display dialog "A new merged QuickTime file will be created on the desktop. Please choose a name:" default answer "Enter Name")
    tell application "Finder"
      try
      set make_file to make new file at (path to desktop folder as string) with properties {name:file_name & ".mov"}
set new_file to make_file as alias
      on error
display dialog "A file with the name " & "“" & file_name & "”" & " already exists on the desktop. Please try again." buttons {"OK"} default button 1 cancel button 1 with icon stop
      end try
    end tell
    tell application "QuickTime Player"
set temp_doc to make new document
    end tell
set fol to choose folder with prompt "Choose the folder containing QuickTime files to be merged:"
    tell application "Finder"
set the_files to every file of folder fol
repeat with i from 1 to count of the_files
      set a_file to item i of the_files
      my merge_files(a_file, temp_doc)
      end repeat
    end tell
    delay 1
    tell application "QuickTime Player"
      tell document 1
      select none
save as self contained in new_file
      close
      end tell
    end tell
    on merge_files(a_file, temp_doc)
              tell application "QuickTime Player"
      activate
      make new document
      open a_file
      delay 1
      tell document 1
      set t to get duration
      set current time to t
      select all
      copy
      close
      end tell
      activate document temp_doc
      delay 1
      tell document 1
      paste
      end tell
      end tell
    end merge_files
    Hope this helps. Good luck.

How do I launch Quicktime Player on Mac Book Air? I know that my computer came with it, and when I try to launch it, the icon tells me that it is Version 10.1. Nothing else happens. I wanted to watch some online videos which require the plug in, but the plug in says that it needs my permission to run. In Chrome, it is enabled, and yet it doesn't play, In Safari as well.

I exported a slideshow from keynote and attempted to open it with quicktime player 10 and it failed. The same .mov file plays fine with quicktime player 7

That is not unusual behavior for QuickTime X. The Keynote file probably has some user input (mouse or spacebar) to advance slides.
Continue using QuickTime Player 7 for this file.

  • Launch Quicktime Player/ No data duplication

    Hello,
I'm trying to use the blog template in iWeb to create a video organizing/browsing page. The basic idea is to have a picture from the video with a short descriptive text (easy), but then make it so when you click on the picture the video launches in Quicktime Player.
All this content will be stored on a local folder using the "publish to file" option.
Also, I don't want to create multiple copies of the video files-- in other words, I'd like iWeb to point to the files in a common directory w/out making a copy in the site folder.
    Is this possible?
    Thanks,
    Andy

Try holding the alt key to download them, and then open them in Quicktime Player, if you want them to open automatically thereafter, you can probably use Automator.
