Quicktime player won't play iMovie 09 export m4v

I exported a movie from iMovie 09, produced a .m4v file.
QuickTime Player 7.6.2(518) with QuickTime 7.6.2(1327) plays this with serious stutters in the playback every few seconds.
Current VLC and Plex play the file back without any problem.
Is there some update or plugin I need to fix this?
Thanks --- Sophie

I find that with recalcitrant .m4v files, re-exporting from the original base file as an H.264 then renaming the file extension as .m4v so as to fit in with the scripting that is automatically generated when exporting with for the web option results in a larger , but generally more compatible file.
Might cure some of your blues, plus the .m4v is just Apple's .mp4 and Apple's MPEG4 doesn't seem to have the 'common touch' required, all told

  • Quicktime Player won't play avi files all of a sudden

All of a sudden Quicktime Player won't play my avi files. They worked previously. I could play them with Quicktime 7 with or without Perian. I'm running 10.6.4.
They'll run fine on my MacBook and I don't have Perian installed on it.
    Any ideas?

I just uninstalled Flip4Mac and everything is working as it's supposed to. Very strange. Perhaps a conflict with Perian? But then again, QT didn't play the avi files with Perian installed. So, I guess the conflict is with Flip4Mac and something else.
    Thanks anyway

  • My quicktime player won't play any videos on my Mac X os. The video will start on quicktime then automatically start

My quicktime player won't play any videos on my Mac X os. The video will start on quicktime then automatically start. I installed DiV X today and all this happened is there anyway to fix this?? I went through everything dragging the icon to the trash and deleting it from safari extentions.

    Download and install
    Perian from  http://perian.org/
You should read this support page  http://perian.org/#support   in case you need to delete older codecs.  In Macintosh HD/Library/Quicktime/ delete any files relating to DivX (Perian already has them), particularly any DivX extension to Safari. However it should be noted that Perian is not an internet plugin and will not play DivX files imbedded on a website. For that you will need the DivX Player browser plugin available from  http://www.divx.com/en/software/mac  Note that Perian will be discontinued after the release of Mountain Lion:  http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-13727_7-57434082-263/perian-plug-in-for-quicktime-t o-be-discontinued/?tag=txt;title

  • Quicktime Player won't play Sketchup animations

After switching to Lion, Quicktime player renders animation .mov files exported from Sketchup as just black. I can get the movie to play by importing the .mov file into Final Cut Express, then re-exporting it as a .mov from that program. After doing that Quicktime Player plays the movie okay. What gives? Using OS10.7.2,  Quicktime 10.1, and Sketchup 8 on a Mac Pro.

  • Quicktime Pro won't play FCPro exported Qtime mov

I exported mov files from Final Cut. But Quicktime won't play them.
Have installed some 3rd party Codecs but no joy.
What do you think is the problem?

I exported mov files from Final Cut. But Quicktime won't play them.
What audio and video compression formats did you use? Are you trying to play them back on the same computer or a different one?

  • Quicktime Player - won't play movie

I have a movie file which works on my old 10.6 Snow Leopard machine (it's a m4v file), but Quicktime player under 10.8 refuses to play it. Whenever I try to open it, it complains of a missing codec (but doesn't state what). However I can watch the preview in Quicklook. If I try to watch it in VLC, the sound comes out all distorted and sounds like something from the 80s, while the 10.6 machine plays it nicely.
I've tried to copy it via various methods incase it's getting corrupted in transit, but I get the same result.
Any tips or recomendations for a movie player that might play this file?

    Hi Sam,
.m4v is the format and codec is the component / resource used build the movie i.e m4v is a box that is carrying the movie and the movie was created using codec like MPEG or MPEG2 or H264 and so on...
http://perian.org try to get this App or http://mplayerx.org/download.html, try to update your VLC player....
    Good luck...

  • QuickTime Player won't play movie bought from iTunes Store.

Finder's Quick Look says that QT Player can play it. QT Player says to first authorize through iTunes. iTunes says that it's already authorized.
I've seen the same problem in various places all over the net but it just started happening to me with 10.8.3. Never had a problem in 10.8.2 or earlier. Any ideas on how to fix?

Some information on Quicktime player. The last two links are you other applications you can download to see if they can play the movie:

  • Quicktime player won't play DVCPRO HD clips.

I noticed on a project I shot that we could not view the Quicktime DVCPRO HD clips I was shooting with the Quicktime player. The clips (every one) would play for maybe 5 to 8 seconds and then stop playing (on a Macbook Pro).
Now I'm at home on my Dual Quad Core and the exact same thing is occurring.
Anyone know what the deal is?
    .

Do you have Quicktime 7 installed? If so, it will be in your Utilities folder. Open the video with Quicktime 7.
If you don't have Quicktime 7 installed. Open your Snow Leopard installation disk and there should be a folder for additional (programs) installation. Quicktime 7 should be in there.....

  • Quicktime player won't play movies from old camera

about a year ago I put some video clips into iphoto taken on my camera.
    the info on them says
    title P(some numers).MOV
    format QuickTime Movie
it used to play when I clicked on them. Now nothing happens, quicktime starts but the player doesn't play it.
    I get no error.

Thanks. Apple certainly does not make that fact clear when they try to sell you Quicktime Pro. I'm having a real problem with their corporate ethics; I'm a very sorry owner of a Generation 5 iPod so I'm batting 1000!

  • Quicktime player won't play

I have gotten about 4 emails (Frontier) with attatched videos that quicktime won't play.  I have the latest version of quicktime and have tried doing it through itunes, but get the same box saying it's not in a format quicktime understands.  Do I need some new software and if so what?

Are you sure that the attachments are safe to open?  Were you expecting them?  You mght try opening them with Flip4Mac, a Windows/Mac app that plays videos.  Look for it on Google.

  • Quicktime 10 won't play FCE exported .mov files?

I have edited several videos using Final Cut Express and exported them as .mov files to my desktop. Now, because I have a small internal hard drive (128GB SSD), I copy all of my raw footage to an external hard drive and then delete the files from my Mac HD. But, I keep the finished videos on my desktop. When I try to play the video while the hard drive is plugged in, QuickTime opens and plays the video just fine. But, when the external hard drive is NOT connected and I try to play the video (from my Mac HD), QuickTime won't open it nor play it. If I absolutely have to, I will carry the external HD around with me so I can play my videos, but I was just wondering if it had to do with the codec (H.264) my OS (10.6.8) QuickTime X or FCE (4.1). Can anybody help me?

At this point one can only make guesses as to a solution since you have not really provided any useful information.
I have edited several videos using Final Cut Express and exported them as .mov files to my desktop.
For future reference, an MOV file is any compressed data in an MOV file container. Data can be any compression format compatible with the system configuration on which the file was made—to include both Apple QT native compatible codecs and "Pro" app installed codecs to third party codecs like WMV, DivX, XviD, MPEG-2, etc. In order to eliminate codec problems, in the future please indicate the specific codecs involved.
This would normally be the playback description of a "QT Reference" file. Basically, a reference file is a very small/quickly created file that tells the player to play data that is actually contained in one or more other files. However, since the reference file cannot be played if the main data file(s) are not accessible (i.e., when the external drive is disconnected), you should also be getting an error message telling you it cannot find referenced data and you have yet to confirm this here.
If I absolutely have to, I will carry the external HD around with me so I can play my videos, but I was just wondering if it had to do with the codec (H.264) my OS (10.6.8) QuickTime X or FCE (4.1).
Once again, since we don't know what form of compression was used or what settings were used, it is impossible to determine if there are any secondary problems to be delt with here. In most cases, a high date rate/low compression format is used for import/editing purposes and the final file is "exported" to a specific compression format depending on its specific target use. In most cases, H.264/AAC is the best compression format for "distibution" since it has a very wide range of settings which allow you to adjust the file size and quality aspects to suit any specific device or target use and to do so as a "standalone" (re-compressed) files which are independent of any data in source/other files.

  • Quicktime player won't play avi files.

    Hi Guys,
My MacBook Pro is amazing and all but when I try to watch or open an .avi file it tells me this:
Yes I did click on the "Tell Me More" button and downloaded the Dvix Plugin but after all the trouble of downloading everything the .avi files still don't play...
    Please Guys help me out....
    Thanks,
    Lucas

It will be through VLC.  VLC is worth having as it enables you to play lots of media formats that are not otherwise supported on the Mac.

  • Quicktime player won't open anything. Mac pro

My quicktime player won't play anything. Need suggestion on what to do.

Can you launch QT by itself, not clicking first on a file? If so, then use Open and navigate to your file. Do you have any other media players installed (Windows Media Player, Realplayer)? Maybe one of them is set as default. Also browse through the More Like This threads to the right to see what others have tried.

  • DVD Player won't play some DVDs

My DVD Player won't play certain DVDs. Presumably all commercial DVDs should be playable in the software. Fox discs are a problem. I can get Player to turn on, but after the menu, the screen flashes a reading error, from which it could not recover. Yesterday I tried to play a Paramount disc, and nothing happened. The computer didn't even acknowledge that there was a disc in the tray. A Wolfe Video wouldn't read at first (I got a dialogue box that the disc was blank) but I put it in again and that time it played.
Also, on a side note, I would like future editions of DVD Player to add the feature of allowing the viewer the ability to go backwards a frame at a time, as well as forwards.

    Hi, Doug.
This is starting to sound like a different problem. Your original report seemed to apply only to specific DVDs. Now it's with all DVDs. Before we get into how to reinstall DVD player, let's try a few other things that are more likely troublemakers with DVD Player.
    1. As a general check, run the procedure specified in my "Resolving Disk, Permission, and Cache Corruption" FAQ. Perform the steps therein in the order specified.
    2. Reset DVD Player. Peform all of the following steps before attempting to launch DVD Player again:2.1. Trash the com.apple.DVDPlayer.plist file in your Home > Library > Preferences folder. This file is the preferences file for DVD Player.
2.2. Using Get Info, make sure you are the Owner and have Access of Read & Write on the following folders on your account:• Home > Library > Application Support.
    • Home > Library > Application Support > DVD Player.
    • Home > Library > Application Support > DVD Player > Settings. If not, correct the permissions accordingly using the Owner and Access pop-up menus in the Details sub-panel of the Ownership & Permissions panel of the folders' Get Info windows.
2.3. Trash the contents of your Home > Library > Application Support > DVD Player > Settings folder.3. If none of the above sorts it out, let's see what Console can tell us: After the problem occurs, make note of the time, then immediately check the ends of these Console logs for clues that may have been logged when the problem occurred.
    4. Note that none of the above rules out the possibility that your optical drive has become defective.4.1. Can you burn DVDs, e.g. even data DVDs from Finder?
4.2. See if the freeware VLC Media Player (nee VideoLan Client) can play the DVDs.Good luck!

  • Video/Movie won't play when exported as a PDF.

    Hello,
I am creating an interactive PDF using CS5 to display video work. Unfortunately, the video won't play when exported as an interactive PDF, I am just left with blank space. I find this very odd as it plays in preview and also when exported as a SWF but that file type is unsuitable for the project.
Initially when I exported it I got this message: "One or more of the interactive elements are clipped in ways the pdf files can't reproduce...." Obviously, I have ensured the file is resized correctly and also tried .mov, .mp4 and also .flv file types with no success. I have also checked the simple things like ensuring all the right boxes are ticked when I export.
This is not the first time I have embedded video but it is the first time without success despite following the same pattern. Any ideas as to why this would be and how to fix it?
    Thank you,
    Laura

Use Flv or f4v format, after you have placed video into your layout, make sure that you don´t scale or crop video frame at all.
(Whren you File > Place a video, you will have a loaded cursor with video icon. Click the empty spot on page with loaded cursor, don´t draw a rectangle or click on the top of some exisiting frame)
It´s important that you have your video in 100% encoded size in your layout. If you need to scale or crop it, load that video into Adobe Media Encoder and do it there, and re-encode the video to the correct size and shape aftrwards.
Adobe Media Encoder ships with InDesign.
