Quicktime player won't start, crashes

I have a computer and it won't run the quicktime player. It starts up and immediately quits. I think it happened during a power outage. I tried trashing the .plist file in preferences. Is there anything else I can do to fix it, it still doesn't work.
Thanks
Bob

Will QuickTime Player open if you are logged in to a different user account?

  • My quicktime player won't play any videos on my Mac X os. The video will start on quicktime then automatically start

My quicktime player won't play any videos on my Mac X os. The video will start on quicktime then automatically start. I installed DiV X today and all this happened is there anyway to fix this?? I went through everything dragging the icon to the trash and deleting it from safari extentions.

    Download and install
    Perian from  http://perian.org/
You should read this support page  http://perian.org/#support   in case you need to delete older codecs.  In Macintosh HD/Library/Quicktime/ delete any files relating to DivX (Perian already has them), particularly any DivX extension to Safari. However it should be noted that Perian is not an internet plugin and will not play DivX files imbedded on a website. For that you will need the DivX Player browser plugin available from  http://www.divx.com/en/software/mac  Note that Perian will be discontinued after the release of Mountain Lion:  http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-13727_7-57434082-263/perian-plug-in-for-quicktime-t o-be-discontinued/?tag=txt;title

  • Quicktime Player won't play avi files all of a sudden

All of a sudden Quicktime Player won't play my avi files. They worked previously. I could play them with Quicktime 7 with or without Perian. I'm running 10.6.4.
They'll run fine on my MacBook and I don't have Perian installed on it.
    Any ideas?

I just uninstalled Flip4Mac and everything is working as it's supposed to. Very strange. Perhaps a conflict with Perian? But then again, QT didn't play the avi files with Perian installed. So, I guess the conflict is with Flip4Mac and something else.
    Thanks anyway

  • Quicktime player won't open anything. Mac pro

My quicktime player won't play anything. Need suggestion on what to do.

Can you launch QT by itself, not clicking first on a file? If so, then use Open and navigate to your file. Do you have any other media players installed (Windows Media Player, Realplayer)? Maybe one of them is set as default. Also browse through the More Like This threads to the right to see what others have tried.

  • Quicktime Player won't screen record

I have Quicktime Player 10.0 (but it doesn't show a "Q" icon - see my other post about this), and Mac OS X Snow Leopard (10.6.8).
When I launch Quicktime Player, I have a selection under "File" for "New Screen Recording", but when I select it, nothing happens.  From what I've reasearched, I'm supposed to get another screen (black, with a red button to start recording), but nothing happens on my screen.  The "New Screen Recording" is now greyed out, but I don't see that it's recording anywhere.

    Thank you!
It's looking for the QuickTime.cpl in the correct place. So I think we might just be dealing with a badly broken QuickTime.
Let's try the following procedure. (My apologies, I don't have a Dutch translation for all of this.)
Download and save a fresh copy of the QuickTime installer to your hard drive. (Don't run the install on line and don't start the install just yet.)
    http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/
    Sluit QuickTime Player.
Now we'll remove any leftover program files and folders.
After the PC restarts, do not open any applications. Disconnect from your network and/or the internet. Now switch off all your security software (firewall, antivirus, antispyware).
Now start the install by doubleclicking the QuickTimeInstaller.exe file you downloaded earlier.
Reenable all security software prior to reconnecting to your network and/or the internet.
    Does QuickTime launch properly now?

  • QuickTime Player 7.65.1780 Crashes During Startup (WinXP pro)

This error is occurring when I attempt to run QuickTime Player. The Control Panel QuickTime interface operates. I noticed the tray icon went missing after the iTunes/QuickTime software update via Apple Software Update.
iTunes still starts, plays music, etc. and will perform the iPhone Synchronization functions OK.
If you need any other info please let me know.
    Thank you.

The problem wasn't with the QuickTime Installation as such. I had forgotten the Kaspersky Internet Security was upgraded from the V8.x version to V9.0.0.463(b.c) (or 2010 version) during the same time frame as the QuickTime Update (looking at the system logs reminded me). iTunes is a 'Trusted' Application in the 'Threats and Exclusions' settings, QuickTime was not. After placing all the exe's in the QuickTime Directory as 'Trusted Applications' in Kaspersky the QuickTime Icon is back in the tray and QuickTime Runs normally. Kaspersky is a good system protection system, but in this case it is protecting with no message about it's actions. Apple may want to make a recommendation to Kaspersky concerning iTunes/QuickTime since both have problems operating with Kaspersky on the system. iTunes would fail to sync with my iPhone until iTunes was 'listed' with Kaspersky.
    Thank you for your help.

  • QuickTime Player won't play movie bought from iTunes Store.

Finder's Quick Look says that QT Player can play it. QT Player says to first authorize through iTunes. iTunes says that it's already authorized.
I've seen the same problem in various places all over the net but it just started happening to me with 10.8.3. Never had a problem in 10.8.2 or earlier. Any ideas on how to fix?

Some information on Quicktime player. The last two links are you other applications you can download to see if they can play the movie:
    Video - QuickTime Media Formats
    Video - QuickTime Player
    Video Player - Divx
    Video Player - VLC

  • Quicktime Player won't clear recently viewed videos?

Lately, QuicktimePlayer has been unable to clear my recently viewed videos in the "open recent" menu. When this happened a few weeks ago, I deleted the Quicktimeplayer p.list and it solved the problem but now it's happening again. I have tried deleting the p.list again and re-started my computer but quicktime player is still unable to clear my recently viewed videos. Advice please?

Are you sure that the attachments are safe to open?  Were you expecting them?  You mght try opening them with Flip4Mac, a Windows/Mac app that plays videos.  Look for it on Google.

  • QuickTime player won't close and won't allow me to shutdown

    I Have a MacBook Pro 11,1 - 2.6 GHz i5...IOS 10.9.5...8 GB memory...1600 MHz DDR3.  My QuickTime v.10.3 won't shutdown and won't  allow me to shutdown my MacBook pro.

Choose Force Quit from the Apple menu, select the QuickTime Player, and press the Force Quit button. If that doesn't work, save and close everything you can and use the Activity Monitor in the /Applications/Utilities/ folder to force quit the loginwindow process.

  • Quicktime player won't play DVCPRO HD clips.

I noticed on a project I shot that we could not view the Quicktime DVCPRO HD clips I was shooting with the Quicktime player. The clips (every one) would play for maybe 5 to 8 seconds and then stop playing (on a Macbook Pro).
Now I'm at home on my Dual Quad Core and the exact same thing is occurring.
Anyone know what the deal is?
    .

Do you have Quicktime 7 installed? If so, it will be in your Utilities folder. Open the video with Quicktime 7.
If you don't have Quicktime 7 installed. Open your Snow Leopard installation disk and there should be a folder for additional (programs) installation. Quicktime 7 should be in there.....

  • Quicktime player won't upgrade to Pro

I've properly entered registration code and the panel shows that I've been upgraded but none of the Pro features are active and it still shows that I'm only able to use QuickTime Player. I've restarted computer which is running OS X 10.4.11 and Pro still doesn't show.

no. the menu bar says QuickTime Player and the functions associated with Pro remain greyed out.

  • Quicktime Player Won't Update

Just bought pro.... and apparently paid for nothing.
Quicktime Player is still quicktime player..... no magical transformation to Quicktime Pro, even though registration info is present and correct.

what is the preferred file format for editing, saving and burning QT movies?
If you are burning movies to iDVD, DVDSP, Toast, etc for playback on commercial DVD player and plan to do the editing in iMovie HD, FCE, or FCP, then it is probably best to convert to DV since that is the compression format in which these applications actually perform their frame level edits. QT Pro will edit any "fully" supported QT format. iMovie '08 will edit in multiple formats but not all of those supported by QT Pro. (I have personally only tested DV, Animation/Integer, MPEG4/AAC, and H.264/AAC in iMovie '08 thus far and have read that MPEG4 with µ-law 2:1 and MPEG1 compression was not compatible.)

  • Quicktime player won't play iMovie 09 export m4v

    I exported a movie from iMovie 09, produced a .m4v file.
QuickTime Player 7.6.2(518) with QuickTime 7.6.2(1327) plays this with serious stutters in the playback every few seconds.
Current VLC and Plex play the file back without any problem.
Is there some update or plugin I need to fix this?
    Thanks --- Sophie

I find that with recalcitrant .m4v files, re-exporting from the original base file as an H.264 then renaming the file extension as .m4v so as to fit in with the scripting that is automatically generated when exporting with for the web option results in a larger , but generally more compatible file.
Might cure some of your blues, plus the .m4v is just Apple's .mp4 and Apple's MPEG4 doesn't seem to have the 'common touch' required, all told

  • Quicktime Player - won't play movie

I have a movie file which works on my old 10.6 Snow Leopard machine (it's a m4v file), but Quicktime player under 10.8 refuses to play it. Whenever I try to open it, it complains of a missing codec (but doesn't state what). However I can watch the preview in Quicklook. If I try to watch it in VLC, the sound comes out all distorted and sounds like something from the 80s, while the 10.6 machine plays it nicely.
I've tried to copy it via various methods incase it's getting corrupted in transit, but I get the same result.
Any tips or recomendations for a movie player that might play this file?

    Hi Sam,
.m4v is the format and codec is the component / resource used build the movie i.e m4v is a box that is carrying the movie and the movie was created using codec like MPEG or MPEG2 or H264 and so on...
http://perian.org try to get this App or http://mplayerx.org/download.html, try to update your VLC player....
    Good luck...
