Quicktime player x unable to record

Unable to record in Quicktime Player X, 10.8.4- QT will open, even play movies, but when the record window comes up, clicking on it will not start a recording, but switch to another open application, whatever is behind it, like the Finder, or Safari, etc. I wish I could take a screen recording of this error....

Mine also won't work, but what it does is freeze for a little, then act like it's recording for 10 seconds, then give me an error:

Have you tried restarting or resetting your iPhone?
Restart: Press On/Off button until the Slide to Power Off slider appears, select Slide to Power Off and, after the iPhone shuts down, then press the On/Off button until the Apple logo appears.
Reset: Press the Home and On/Off buttons at the same time and hold them until the Apple logo appears (about 10 seconds). Ignore the "Slide to power off"

  • Quicktime Player unresponsive while screen recording. Help!

Hello. I often upload youtube videos with QuickTime Player and Final Cut Pro X. 2 days ago, I noticed a problem with quicktime player. Whenever I try to screen record, about 2 mins and 30 secs of recording, QuickTime Player becomes unresponsive. I am running on the new version of OSX Mavericks on a MacBook Pro. Thanks for concerning your time to help me fix this problem.

Thanks for the tip on the stop record function icon on the top menu bar.  Its disappointing that the new program with Mavericks doesn't keep the the player control box open when you are recording.  This may have been in response to some people complaining that the box can get in the way of the recording, although elsewhere it is said that even though it looks like it gets in the way it actually won't show up in the recording.
Regardless of your preference, I think some of us would ideally like to be able to see the window at times so that we can verify that the sound levels are coming through (its a royal pain to record an hour and find out later that no sound was recorded) and to potentially pause recording to remove sections where material is occuring that is of no interest (ie they took a break or need to look for something).  The stop button literally stops the recording and no longer gives you the option to RESUME.
The only thing that I found that does work although it is VERY CLUMSY is that if you attempt to quit   Quicktime the window with all the controls will show up.  If you hit cancel that window will stay there and allow you to do what you want.  Now I suspect all the messages that say DO YOU WANT TO END RECORDING are likely to show up in your recording, but I guess you can trim that out.  What would make a lot of sense is for them to have the option to view the control box in the  View pull down menu.
Oh well.  Any one else found any other ways to manage the quicktime screen recordings without being able to access the control window?

  • Quicktime Player won't screen record

I have Quicktime Player 10.0 (but it doesn't show a "Q" icon - see my other post about this), and Mac OS X Snow Leopard (10.6.8).
When I launch Quicktime Player, I have a selection under "File" for "New Screen Recording", but when I select it, nothing happens.  From what I've reasearched, I'm supposed to get another screen (black, with a red button to start recording), but nothing happens on my screen.  The "New Screen Recording" is now greyed out, but I don't see that it's recording anywhere.
    help?

I'm having the sam problem!!!! please help because the program I'm useing to create videos won't use any other dvd burner and I'm stuck!!!! I must finish a job and can't!!!!

    Hi RhysF78,
    Welcome to the Support Communities!
What version of Quicktime Player are you using?  Do you get the same behaviour in a different user account on your iMac?  Here are a few suggestions to address this issue.  I'm including some articles from our Knowledge Base with more detailed information:
    1) Quit all open applications and restart the computer ... often times this "refreshes" your system.
    2) Try and SMC / PRAM reset
    3) Uninstall the Quicktime application and redownload it.  This will not affect any movies you've already created.

  • Is there a "pro" version of QuickTime Player 10?

I'm still using QuickTime Player 7 Pro. Is there a "pro" version of QuickTime Player 10?

Screen recording? How does that work?
    Question is unclear.
QT 7 Pro does not have a "screen capture" option.
Screen capture software apps divide CPU power between processing/rendering of the screen and processing/capturing the rendered data. In the case of most apps, capture routines have a targeted data data dependent on the quality setting, CPU power available and area to be recorded. Thus, larger recording areas and CPU intensive processing tend to decrease the frame rate of the captured "scratch" file but retain a relatively consistent level of quality for each frame which, in turn, may effect the final output,
Many users, especially those having older, QT 7 Pro only operating systems, elect to purchase third-party screen captures that allow the capture of both system, line input, and/or mic audio, as well as, capture at full screen, "object" window, or user selected portions of the screen. While there may be some free capture software still available for download, most users opt for commercial apps which offer additional features usually targeting specific user workflows. These may range for simple apps like the Araelium ScreenFlick ($29) to intermediate apps like Ambrosia's Snaps Pro X ($69) to combined capture/tutorial editor apps like Telestream's ScreenFlow 4. (I would normally advise potential screen capture app users to research and try out the various applications that are available to see what best suits their individual needs.)

I would like to ask the following question. I am using mac os x 10.9 maverics me quicktime player version 10.3. Can I trim a video recording without having to press the pause or save it as a file? Or can I add a new recording to a video file? Thanks in advance

    Well,
I tried the "Internet Recovery" option and finally saw Mac OS X Mountain Lion's install page but after waiting 7 hours when I just thought its going to start installing, I got another progress bar with 36 hours remining time to download "Additional Components" then after progressing 2-3 hours, it shows "Unable to write installation something..., Contact Apple Care"
Then I accidently rebooted the machine and now it seems Internet Recovery don't work anymore, it shows "support.apple.com - 40 something!" error, and finally when I tried to reboot using Recovery HD, I found it's gone as-well!
To be honest, I don't know what to do now, I am and dissapointed... also I do not have any Apple Store nearby, there is an authorized country reseller almost 650/km far away from my residents and they even charges too high (like $250) for doing such repairs (as per phone conversation)
If anyone have any idea or anything to help me with, please do share- I'd be eternally grateful!

  • Quicktime Player screen recording: 720p video is appearing as 480p max in Youtube

So I did a screen recording in QuickTime Player, after trimming I saved it to 720p in QuickTime Player. When I uploaded it to Youtube though, the max resolution I can select in the resolution options is 480p, so it's not as clear as my original.
I check the original video file and the resolution is 1160x648. So the video screen I selected to record was a bit short of 1280x720. Is that why YouTube downgraded it to a 480p video? Selecting an exact 1280x720 rectangle with QuickTime Player isn't possible for me. I can overshoot I guess and let QT player shrink it to 720p? Or is this some issue with Youtube and the mov file format from QT player?
To save me sometime, does any know how I can upconvert my mov video to the necessary resolution and/or format Youtube needs to support 720p playback at least?
    Setup:
    OSX Yosemite 10.10.2
    QuickTime Player 10.4

This feels like there is some sort of error during save but I was wondering if a) anyone had experienced this or b) knew of a fix.
    1) Have used the screen capture option in the past to, more or less, test how it worked. Unfortunately, my Snow Leopard system is currently tied up batch processing files so I can't re-check things at the moment.
    2) How long are captures and how much time are you allowing between terminating the recording and forcing the application to quit? If I remember correctly, this is a 2-step process. In the first phase the screen is simply captured to your hard drive. In the second phase, the data is converted to H.264 compressed video and written to the target file container. If you force the app to quit prematurely, the target file is never properly updated/closed leaving it empty and/or unable to be opened. As to the controls, they remain deactivated until all of the data has been converted/written to the target file or you force the app to quit. The amount of time required to create the target output file is, of course, directly related to the duration of the screen capture.
Suggest you try making a very short screen capture and see if the test file is successfully created. If it is, allow more time for the process to complete on its own with longer captures. If the process is not successful, try a similar test using a different user account to see if the problem is local to the user account or system wide.

  • HT201066 Mountain Lion - QuickTime Player X -- What happened to the ability "to select what location (on your Mac) to save your screen recording when finished"

(It is also missing in the graphic which accompanies the text in this article:ht4024)
While the default behavior (file is saved locally in ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.QuickTimePlayerX/Data/Library/Autosave information/Unsaved QuickTime Player Document.qtpxcomposition) seems to work fine for users with mobile home directories, users with network home directories are unable to record on Mountain Lion machines.
I believe that by changing the default save location to a local writable space, we could avoid the issue, but the option to change the default save location seems to be missing.

  • Unable to capture Mini DV footage through quicktime player 7

I am using the "new movie recording" window on quicktime player 7 to try and capture a tape. However every time I try I get an error message telling me:
This message shows after about every 2 seconds of recording which is strange as it the sort of thing you would expect to see if you unplugged a cable half way through. However this is not the case and i have run a cleaning tape through he camera so it is not that.
Is there a solution to this so I can record the whole tape into one MOV file rather than thousands of 2 second ones? I tried with Quicktime Player X and got the same thing happen with an even less detailed error message.
Possibly recording through an external screen if thats possible?

I suspect that QuickTime's error-checking is stronger than whatever is used in the camera. QT is probably detecting breaks in the timecode than the camera doesn't see.
Tapes can curl for many reasons: age, heat, cold, humidity, etc.
If you can get it to run on your Mac, Mitz Pettel's old Vidi application (http://www.mitzpettel.com/) is great for ignoring timecode breaks. Vidi runs well on my 10.4 PPC Mac; unpredictably on my 10.6 Intel Mac. I don't know how well/whether it works on newer versions of OS X.

  • I have lots of .MOV files on my iPhone5 that I need to transfer to my PC.  Using QuickTime Player 7.7.4 I am unable to view them once they have been copied to a hard drive or directly from the iPhone via USB. 1% of the time a vid is viewable

I can tranfer them to a hard drive on my PC, but am unable to view most of them using QuickTime Player 7.7.4. Doesn't matter if I'm viewing them via a USB connection to my iPhone5 or from a hard drive after the file has been copied via USB.  1% of the vids are viewable, 20% open with a black screen and audio only. The rest open with a blue, purple and green stryrated mess and no audio.  Yes its a Quick Time problem I know but where do I post this question in the community?  Also searching my drives for other .MOV files downloaded from the net I find the same problem with them.

Heres what I don't like about VLC, but at least the files are viewable...somewhat.
    1. You can't flip the image 90degrees, needs to have a rotate feature for sure.  This needs to have keyboard shortcut so vids can be rotated easily as one may have shot video horizontally and vertically in the same take.
    2. Opens file to a very large window, most of it off the screen, it should REMEMBER what you resized it to, so the next time a video is played you don't have  to drag the window back on the screen so you can get to the resizing handle in the lower corner.
    3.  Doesn't buffer while playing, so the movies are extremely erractic, starting and stopping every 3 seconds, highly annoying.
OK so maybe my PC is too slow, its a dual processor 486 Hyperrthread 2.8G but I only have 2Gigs of memory, however, bettery than 50% of the memory is still available while playing a vid (memory is checked every 4 seconds with a program), but I have 90-100% CPU useage going on while playing.
Maybe I should think about a new computer.

Download and install VLC Player. It plays more formats and is free and highly regarded.

  • QuickTime Player - Partial Screen Recording?

    Hello everyone,
My idea was to use AppleScript to:
    - Launch Quicktime Player
    -- Start Screen Recording
-- Check that 'Show Mouse Click in Recording' is marked
    -- Click 'Record' button
--- Let user drag his desired portion of the screen
    --- Start record
    --- Stop record
    -- Save movie
    - Close QuickTime Player
So far I only got to the point where the user needs to 'drag his desired portion of the screen'.
But I also have a problem detecting that 'Show Mouse Click in Recording' is checked or not.
I can click it, but if it's already checked - it'll just go off. The problem is that it's not really a checkbox element rather a menu item.
Is there a way around it?
Also, and more important, how can I tell when the user finished his recording I.e. clicks the 'Stop' button so the script
can move on to saving that file.
Here is what I got so far (pretty basic):
    tell application "QuickTime Player"
    activate
    end tell
    tell application "System Events"
              tell process "QuickTime Player"
click menu item "New Screen Recording" of menu "File" of menu bar 1
click menu button of window "Screen Recording"
click menu item "Show Mouse Clicks in Recording" of menu 1 of menu button 1 of window "Screen Recording"
click button 1 of window "Screen Recording"
              end tell
    end tell
So, am I crazy or is it possible?
I am pretty new to AppleScript, if there is a different, better way to do it, I would love to know.
    Thanks!

    QuickTime Player 10.2

I don't know much about QuickTime Player. Nevertheless, maybe the following script, tested with QuickTime Player 10.3 under OS X 10.9.1, can help you.
    tell application "QuickTime Player"

        activate
    end tell
    tell application "System Events"
        tell process "QuickTime Player"
tell menu button 1 of window "Screen Recording"
                click
tell menu item "Show Mouse Clicks in Recording" of menu 1
if value of attribute "AXMenuItemMarkChar" is missing value then
                        click
                    else
                        keystroke return
                    end if
                end tell
            end tell
click button 1 of window "Screen Recording"
repeat until exists menu bar item 1 of menu bar 2
                delay 1
            end repeat
repeat while exists menu bar item 1 of menu bar 2
                delay 1
            end repeat
            repeat until exists window "Untitled"
                delay 1
            end repeat
click menu item "Save…" of menu 1 of menu bar item "File" of menu bar 1
        end tell
    end tell

  • Quicktime Player Record Problems - Format Change

    Hey all,
This has been driving me up the wall, and haven't been able to figure out what's causing it.
I've been trying to do a simple Quicktime Record of an incoming DV stream.
I've tried this on two different powerbooks, one with 10.4 and one with 10.5. I have the recording prefs set to Device Native and it records DV beautifully. The problem is that it RANDOMLY just stops recording, anywhere between after 15 min to an hour, sometimes but not always... and the error says "the device format has changed", while the video and audio feed are staying exactly the same.
I've also tried this either through a firewire repeater or direct from device to powerbook... same thing.
    Any ideas?

QuickTime X can't open some media that uses older codecs. Use QuickTime Player 7.6.6 instead.
