Quicktime playing back speed, and audio sync

Hello,
I'm trying to use QTPro instead of iMovie to digitize ntsc video because it produces a single DV file instead of multiple files in iMovie. This saves the rendering process in iMovie. These files need to be a single video file and are used in a chase computer for audio post work. Typical program lengths are between 1 and 3 hours, sometimes more.
When playing the files back in QT the audio progressively drifts even though the firewire box has a switch for "locked audio" that supposedly deals with long DV audio drift.
Another problem that may be related, but certainly can't be good for post work, is that the Movie Info window shows a movie rate of 29.97, correct, but a playing rate of 30. I can't figure out how to get that to play at 29.97.
One last question - the QT record settings have different resolutions (640xxx?) than the native DV resolution of 720xxx, and seem to have a slightly different pixel aspect ratio as well.
Any ideas about these issues? It's messed up my workflow for now, as the iMovie solution has an extra step that takes up double the disk space and extra time.
Digitizing box is a Canopus ADVC-100 with an external 3.5" firewire drive for video, no other apps running at the same time.
Thanks

I'm definitely at 48k/16b, with locked audio on the Canopus.
Sounds like you've got it covered, then. Not sure what else would be causing the A/V drift then, assuming "lock" circuit is functioning properly.
I watched the playing rate and it's mostly at 30 with an occasional dip to 29.75, possibly averaging to 29.97. Hopefully it's correctly playing 29.97
Your upper and lower observed excursions exactly match my own.
The older projects were indeed done with an early version of iMovie and would segment at just under 10 minutes - the 2G limit.
Correct. On mine the "just under" 2 GB limit equated to 9'11" for the first break and 9'8" for each additional. Not sure how exact this carryover is between machines and external drives.
I did a test today using my current version, iMovie HD 5, and it segmented a 2h10min program at just over 1hour per segment. Do you happen to know if the newest iMovie corrects this?
Am wondering if this test is repeatable and/or consistent between capture of different material. Have noted two instances that seem to cause segmentation and/or total termination of capture. One is a "weak" drive sector that passes read/write tests (i.e. test usually done with multiple but limited re-write attempts) but drops a frame during actual capture and trips termination on my older G4 laptop (using older version of iMovie with preference set to do this). As to current iMovie version (v6.02), would assume this could happen if "automatic scene detection" is turned on and a dropped frame is detected. In addition, if this option is turned on, a "time limit" for capture can then be specified. Can't remember if these preference options were included in previous versions of iMovie. You may want to check on this possibility.
I can certainly try the Vidi app you mentioned.
Application is a basic, dedicated, "no frills" utility with fewer "platform limitations" (it works on older platforms/OS) than iMovie. I find it very handy for mobile capture using my old laptop. Here is the VersionTracker link if interested:
http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/18234&page=2
After updating various things I tried using QTPro recording as a test, and after about 1h50min it crashed, leaving the file unfinished and useless. Is there a reputation with QTPro recording? Is it rumored to be unstable? I'm a bit nervous using it now. I keep my systems streamlined for audio post, so I doubt it's a conflict.
Tend to consider it "an afterthought" added to the latest version of QT and as such, a "work still in progress." Frame rates have greatly improved with the last few updates but, like you, I still consider it more of a novelty at this time -- handy for some usese but not something I would trust for precision work.
I solved that by showing package contents of the iMovie project and removing the media clip, a dv file.
I certainly see no problem with this approach if all you want is access to the "raw" material in a file format and especially if you keep it on the same drive. (I.e., all your are doing here is changing the VTOC pointers to the data and not actually copying and/or moving any vast amounts of data, not to mention, it additionally saves drive space.) Basically, the export/copy approach means re-writing vast amounts of data which is directly related to speed of your external drive, CPU and the speed of your target drive. For some purposes, the creation of a reference file may be handy. But even here, you are usually just postponing an inevitable time delay somewhere else in your work flow.

  • Playback pauses and audio sync issues with live video stream

I'm seeing playback pauses about every three seconds and audio sync issues with our live demo stream when using the OSMF/Strobe player.  It happens on both our 2Mbps 720p stream and our 480p 750Kbps stream so it does not seem to be related to higher resolution/bandwidth streams.  It also happens if I point directly to a stream asset or if I point to a .f4v with both streams listed for dynamic so it does not seem to be related to dynamic streaming specifically.
The same live streams play back very well without pauses or audio sync issues in the Akamai's dynamic player and even slightly better with JW 5.2.
I have viewed the OSMF/Strobe playback on three different laptops of various age (3 months to 2 years) and two are Windows and one is Linux.  I have also tried the various buffering options on the Flash Media Player Setup and Strobe setup and it has not made a noticeable difference.
To see the stream with the Akamai player, go to:  http://live.kulabyte.com
To see the stream with the OSMF/Strobe player, go to:  http://live.kulabyte.com/osmf
I do not have JW set up for public viewing yet, but the two above show the distinct difference.
We are really hoping to start pointing our customers towards the OSMF player because of the support provided by the community and Adobe, but we have to get the quality of the playback to be acceptable first.
If someone has ideas on debugging I can PM the actual video assets to you.
    Thanks,
    Tim

    Hi Tim,
You need to add this setting:
    dynamicStreamBufferTime=8
The actual value can be higher or lower. The best practice is to use a value that is twice the keyframe distance. Anyway, try different values and see which performs the best for your content.
I know that the setup page does not contain this option and it is not documented in the UserGuide. We simply missed it. Sorry.
Also note that the dynamic buffering algorithms are not being used for dynamic streaming content. I tried to explain this here:
    https://sourceforge.net/adobe/smp/wiki/Dynamic%20Buffering/
Looking forward to your confirmation that this solved your issue.

song works fine in itunes but when i transfer it to my phone it playes back brocken and begins to skip. any solutions??
I have already restored my phone to the newest software and also completely uninstalled itunes and re downloaded it.

Basic troubleshooting steps clearly outlined in the User Guide are restart, reset, restore from backup, restore as new device.
If you have gone through ALL the above steps and are still having problems, then you'll need to bring your phone into Apple for evaluation.

  • Playing multiple videos and keeping sync?

    Hi,
I've got 3 videos (.avi wrapper) from 3 different cameras all synced together. When I run all 3 with seperate Quicktime apps they fall out of sync with each other (after 10 minutes there was a 15 second difference).
Is there any way to sync all 3 players together or to run all 3 videos in the same player? I'd like them to be frame accurate.
Are there any otehr ways of syncing the videos together (H.264?)?
Thanks for any help on this....,
Precision 670   Windows XP   4Gb Ram, 500Gb HD
Dell Precision 670   Windows XP   4Gb Ram, 500Gb HD

There are 3 different cameras but of 3 different views. However, people will be walking from one view to the next so they all need to be in sync to get the times right between cameras.
There is no audio on any of the footage.
At the moment, opening up 3 Quicktimes, each running 1 video, the quicktime that has focus tends to "run away" and fall out of sync with the other 2 (after I've selected "play all movies). I assume this is a XP focus/priority issue but is there any way around it?
Are there programmes available that will start all 3 at the same time and buffer them to keep them in sync? Can I wrap all videos in a H.264 wrapper and run them that way?

  • Firewire speeds and audio/video with Apple TV

    Hello,
I hope someone can give me some advice regarding 400 vs 800 Firewire connections.
After picking up an Apple TV about 8 months back, I have decided to consolidate all the audio/video content on my wife's and my Macbooks.
Looking at grabbing a Mac mini and connecting a large hard disk via Firewire to that to store everything. I don't plan on connecting the Mac mini to the TV...will continue to use the Apple TV unit for that. However, while some some of the content will sync between the Apple TV unit and external hard disk connected to the Mac mini, I figure there will still be a good portion that would be shared/streamed off the external disk as it is viewed or listened to.
I currently have an Airport Extreme network, and I am able to share/stream video and audio from my Macbook to the Apple TV and it works great. My question is, when I add the Mac mini and start streaming/sharing off the external hard disk attached to it, will there be a difference in performance if the drive is connected via 400 Firewire vs an 800 Firewire?
I figure the wireless transfer between the Mac mini and the Apple TV would be the limiting factor, but felt it prudent to at least check if the Firewire connection would have an effect.
If not, then I plan on picking up a cheap, used older model Mac mini with the 400 Firewire port to save some cash. The machine doesn't need to do anything more than stay powered on with the iTunes app running and sending files back and forth to the Apple TV.
    Thanks in advance!

No doubt the wireless transfer is the weakest link in the chain. Firewire 800 is substantially faster than 400, so you would gain some future-proofing by going with it. And the 2009 Minis come with Wifi-N, while the older models come with G/B.
A used Mini will usually lack the Apple warranty.
Minis are so handy that you have to ask yourself, why is someone getting rid of it? My somewhat cynical answer is that many Minis being sold on the used market are being gotten rid of because of some lurking problem issue that the owner hasn't been able to resolve.
If you must buy an older model, consider an Apple refurbished Mini, which comes with full warranty and current software.

  • Quicktime plays video but no audio

Trying to play Quicktime videos from Prentice Hall website associated with textbook. Browser has up-to-date Quicktime plug-in and when tested there is video and audio. But when video is played from selected website, there is video but no audio. Tested using Google Chrome, Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox but results are the same.

    Jacumba,
Here is the link that the professor provided -
    http://wps.prenhall.com/chet_martin_audiology_11/194/49692/12721280.cw/index.htm l
The instructor tried on the computer in the classroom that she uses and I also tried it on the computer in my office. ON that website are different QuickTIme videos embedded in the different chapters. Clicking on the QuickTime link (box), the QuickTime logo appears, then the image appears but when Play is pressed, the video plays but there's no evidence of audio. The volume control on the QuickTime movie is at maximum and I have the volume on my computer at maximum, but there's no sound whatsoever. LIke I said, I have the latest QuickTime plug-in and when I test the plug-in, I get video and audio.
I'm trying to find out an answer for the professor because she uses the website in her course.
Any suggestions would be most welsom.

  • Audio doesn't play back through DAE audio tracks

I work on Digidesign HD hardware and Logic as a front end and a problem has crept in over the last week or so.
I will be working on a song and suddenly with no warning Logic freezes for about 30sec or so. After this all audio files playing back on DAE tracks will not playback or white noise plays back from those track. The DTDM tracks and instruments tracks work fine. This happens wether i have a couple of tracks on the go or loads. It's like the DAE audio playback side crashes but all other things still play back through the DAE so it half works.
PLEASE PLEASE help as i have to reboot Logic everytime and 10-20 mins later it happens all over again.
    Thanx
    G5 dual 2Gh   Mac OS X (10.4.2)

Just some quick thoughts....I'm not a "techie", but have had my share of softwaretrouble!!
It could be that Logic is set to global 16bit - and you try to play back 24bit files. Had kind of same problem a year ago, but don't remember if it was Logic OR ProTools that gave this result (played for a while...then a burst of white noise). But the crash...no. This is probably caused by other components. It's usually a good thing to trash the Logic preference file and restart. Then check preferences>audio>drivers>DAE that the global bitrate is set as desired (according to your already recorded files). The DAE preferences don't contain that much information, but could be helpful to trash too. Just remember to set the playback buffersize to a reasonable amount for your setup.
    Hope this will help.

  • No play back on multiple audio tracks

I am editing a project and can not get all of my audio tracks to play back. A3, A4, A5, A6, ... all are silent. In audio editing, on the mixer, tracks show they are being played on the faders but no sound. A1 and A2 play just fine. Any suggestions? Thank you in advance.
    mmm

Let me give you a stronger clue, mmm. If your timeline audio playback is set for more audio channels than you have available in hardware, A3A6 could be set to output to channels that don't exist. Make sense?
Right-click (Control-click) on the Audible button for each audio track and slide your mouse over to Audio Output to see what's what.

  • My browser seems to crash quite a lot and Ive noticed a lot of you tube videos dont play back correctly and have a green bar across the screen

Ive had the browser a couple of days now and I've noticed it crashes occasionally. Ive also noticed it doesn't play back videos off you-tube correctly and there is a green band going across them as they play. I think this may be an issue with adobe flash player. If i play the video via the popout button, it seems ok.
I don't know if the crashing and playback issues are related.

I disabled acceleration in the flash player by linking to http://kb.mozillazine.org/Flash#Troubleshooting and scrolling to the line that specifically outlined my problem - split horizontal screen with green line - clicked on the flash link then right clicked the flash icon and ticked disable acceleration.
I also uninstalled and reinstalled more programs then I probably need to.

  • Pre8 and audio sync

I have Pre7 and does anyone know if the audio and video sync problem some fokes like my self experenced in Pre7 has been addressed? I know a fix was hdvsplit.

    JerryMac,
When one does a Capture via firewire, it is just a copying of the 1's and 0's recorded by the camera. It is exact and unfailing in that.
I'd guess that OOS issues are being introduced elsewhere in the workflow. I have not seen people having issue with the Canon HDV30, but may have missed some. If you have some article links, I'd love to look over them to perhaps refresh my memory, which isn't as good as it once was.
Not sure why PrE would have issues, that HDVSplit would fix. Now, HDVSplit is the Capture utility, mainly for its power, that PrE and PrPro should have, but do not. The same can be said for SceneAlyzer Live for SD material. Adobe should buy their code and incorporate their capabilities into both of their NLE's.
As for any difference in PrE 8, I cannot comment. I know that ATR is doing an extensive investigation of that program, but do not know which cameras he has. If he has, or has access to, a Canon HDV30, maybe he can confirm better performance.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • Question about FPS and Audio Sync...

If I record a program from a broadcast HD source and it's transmitted at 24 FPS and I edit/export it in .wmv format at 30 FPS is it possible that it's causing any audio sync issues I might be having?  Should I be exporting it at 24 FPS?

Well, you're not likely to be able to get 24p video to work right in Premiere Elements regardless.
That said, no, the difference in frame rate alone will not cause your audio to go out of sync.
What you'll more likely see is poor blend of frames in your video. It might look jaggy or fuzzy on output.
That is IF it works at all. Premiere Elements technically only supports 25 fps PAL and 29.97 fps NTSC.
