QuickTime plays mp4 audio, no video

I was surprised a few weeks ago when I tried to open up an .mp4 video file I had opened several times in the past, and it suddenly wouldn't play. The picture is black, with the sound intact. When I import them into my iTunes movie library, they play just fine.
Anyone else having this problem/know a fix?
Update: When I tried changing the file extension to .m4v, the icon changed to an iTunes icon and it automatically opens in iTunes. Thoughts?

  • Windows media won't play mp4, audio no video

    I upgraded from a desktop to the HP TouchSmart 15 TS Notebook PC so that I would have all the functionality
    of a new operating system that would work. Guess I was mistaken?!?!?! I have the same problem I had with my old crappy desk-top, MP4 videos still don't play on Windows 8.1???? I get audio but no video????? just a black screen?????

    According to Microsoft support website, Windows Media Player still won't support MP4 files. Though we can make WMP play MP4 video by install some codec, sometime we still encounter can't play MP4 in Windows Media Player issue. MP4 is a container format which may contain multiple video and audio streams. And the video and audio stream can be encoded any of several ways. If the MP4 video or audio codec is not WMP installed codec supported one, Windows Media Player won't play MP4 video of this kind. In order to solve "Windows Media Player won't play MP4 files even when the appropriate codec is installed" and to successfully play any MP4 video in Windows Media Player, we had better convert MP4 to Windows Media Player more supported video format like WMV, AVI. • HT3775 why won't quicktime play .mp4?

    why won't quicktime play .mp4? I just downloaded a 1.2 gig mp4 video that won't play.

    Thanks. I just found it strange that it was one of many files that I ripped from a DVD ( part of a box set of a TV series, and all the others were fine so far. Funny that this one in particular was causing a problem.

  • Playing mp4 audio gives error message "Video can't be played because the file is corrupt"

    Playing a particular mp4 audio file directly from a website link gives error message "Video can't be played because the file is corrupt". However other mp4 audio files from this same website do work correctly. What can I do to get all the the mp4 audio files to play directly from the same website? I must have the correct plugins, etc. since the other files play. This file is not playing from YouTube, is it on the website.
    Thank you for your help.

    What is the link to the site and file in question?
    MP4 files should be handled by Firefox itself, not a plug-in.
    # Click the ≡ Menu Button and choose Add-ons.
    # Click Plugins.
    # Set every plug-in to "Never Activate".
    # Try loading the file again. Is there any difference?
    You have two versions of Flash Player installed. Perform a clean installation of Flash Player as follows.

  • How to play mp4 audio files as video on my iPod Touch?

    I know you are all thinking that this is a stupid question based on the topic, but I have videos for some reason that are in the form of mp4 audio, but they are video when I play them on my computer. I can open these videos (mp4 audio instead of mp4 video) using Windows Media Player and it's not just audio, there is also video. However, whenever I try to sync it to my iPod, it shows up in my music section instead of videos. If i play the video under music, all I see is the white iTunes background, no video. Is there anyway for me to set these files to be recognized as video and store it under my movies category?
    Thanks.

    First, go into Get Info and change the Media Kind on the Options tab to tell iTunes that this is a video. Next, you need to sync this item from the Video tab on your iPod detail in iTunes (i.e. don't sync it as if it was a Music item). If you sync all video content then this will happen automatically once you change the Media Kind. But if you only sync part of your video library, make sure you include this video in the sync selection.
    If you still have problems, you may need to convert the video for iPod playback, even if it plays fine in iTunes. If that's the case, right-click on the video and you'll see an option to convert for iPod use, which will make a copy (so make sure you know which version to sync to the iPod, or simply delete the original).

  • Videos playing only audio, not video

    i recently added a bunch of ripped videos to my iphone (MPEG-4 video). when i try to play them, iphone transitions to landscape mode as if it were going to display the video, but it only plays sound. the screen remains black. videos purchased from itunes in the same format play fine, other MPEG-4s don't. any thoughts as to why only the audio is playing and not the video as well? thanks.

    l'age d'or,
    MPEG-4 has several possible encoding options. If you open the video in Quicktime, and choose Window -> Show Movie Info, it will list the encoding options.
    You may want to verify the videos are not MUXed, and they have the appropriate video encoding. This tutorial gives the steps for converting videos with Quicktime:

  • IPad mini will not play ANY audio or video

    My daughter's 1st gen iPad mini worked great until about 2 months ago. The symptoms are best expressed in a list:
    No audio at all. No music, no game audio, no alarms, no ringtones....nothing.
    No video will record or play. Both cameras work and can take pictures but neither can record full motion videos. Slow mo video will record (and play), but I'm assuming that is because it is actually a series of pictures and not a video...No video from the Internet or previously recorded video will play.
    Siri can't transcribe, so I'm assuming the microphone doesn't work either.
    FaceTime doesn't work.
    The oddest part of it is that the Ipad "thinks" it has full functionality. the music files "play" for half a second (no sound) then insta finish and go to the next song, in a turbo silent loop of her music collection. If you hit record on audio or video it will "begin" recording, bit actually not record anything, and in fact freezes up and requires you to leave, then close the app.
    Now, we took it to the Apple Store near us and 3 or 4 techs looked at it and all said they've never seen anything like this before. We have tried resetting it and reinstalling it as a new iPad. At the genius bar they plugged it in and did a firmware upgrade and it made no difference.
    Did I mention the warranty JUST ran out  a month before this...
    Any help at all would be appreciated....

    Try this:
    1. Close all inactive apps. Double-click the Home button and hold apps in the Task Bar down until they all wiggle then tap the minus sign to close apps. Tap the home button to return to Home screen.
    2. Hold the Sleep/Wake and Home button down until you see the Apple Logo.

    Is anyone else experiencing trouble playing video in itunes?  Video intermittenly pauses and also plays with not audio.  Video used to play fine.  This problem only started since I upgraded to version 7.  I have not used itunes since then because I couldn't watch anything without experiencing these problems.  I was waiting for the next version to come out and hoped it would fix the problems I was having, but no such luck.  I just upgraded to the latest version, version 11 and I'm still having the same problems.  Anyone else having these same issues and if so, any solutions?

  • Can't play live audio (or video) mobile using 4.5.1

    I'm trying to play a live audio stream in a mobile project and cannot get it to work.
    Can someone point me to the best way to play live audio from an rtmp stream in Flash Builder 4.5.1?  I've tried VideoPlayer, VideoDisplay, Sound object, used a netStream and can't get anything to work.  I've tested the stream with a Flex 3 project and can hear the audio there fine.  I'd like to do video later, but I need the audio to work first.
    Here's just some pieces of what I've tried:
         ins = new NetStream(inc);
         var nspo:NetStreamPlayOptions = new NetStreamPlayOptions();
         nspo.streamName = rtmpSession;
         ins.play2(nspo);
         videoInstructor.source =rtmpPath + "/" + rtmpSession;
         videoInstructor.play();
         videoInstructorHost.host = rtmpPath;
         videoInstructorStreamName.streamName = rtmpSession;
    <s:VideoDisplay id="videoInstructor" left="10" right="10" bottom="10" height="331" source="" autoPlay="true"/>
    <s:DynamicStreamingVideoSource id="videoInstructorHost" host="" streamType="live">
      <s:DynamicStreamingVideoItem id="videoInstructorStreamName" streamName="" />
    </s:DynamicStreamingVideoSource>
    <s:VideoDisplay id="videoInstructor" left="10" right="10" bottom="10" height="331" source="{videoInstructorHost}" autoPlay="true"/>
    Any information would be very much appreciated.

    Moving files from an existing install can indeed cause problems, as the error message you got indicated. Existing files and registry entries will point to a particular location, that will not have changed as you moved the files. It sounds like you may have to do a CleanSweap (removal of drivers and software) and reinstall. Let us know how you get on.

  • My iPod Touch 3G 32GB from 4.2.1 to 4.3.2 cannot play the audio of videos when it's hold and after clicking Home button twice to play audio of the video,why?

    When I hold down my iPod Touch 3G 32GB with 4.3.2 I can't play the audio of the video neither clicking play when it's hold why?

    It's a limitation from 4.2.1 for iPhone 3GS and iTouch 3G and not for new devices as iPhone 4, iTouch 4G and iPad 2?

  • HT4363 Ipod touch 5th generation plays only audio of videos

    Hi,
    My new Ipod touch 5th generation that was released in October  2012 does not play video images in tv through Apple tv. It plays the audio of the video, but no images. How can I get it to play you tube videos with images? My Ipad has no problem connecting with the Apple tv and videos play without an issue. Help please!!
    Regards

    Agreed, but the dents are extremely minor, its not like the entire case is cracked and its coming off, or the screens broken. It's just a slight chip. And ispite it being so minor they have declined the replacement.

  • Premier Pro CC won't play / render audio or video after today's update

    Foolishly I allowed CC to update my software ( CC 2014.2 )  and now it won't play or render video or audio.  It will allow me to scrub through and see the video, but the play button just turns to a square and does nothing..  Trying to render anything does even less.
    This behavior can be repeated in both in the source window, as well as the program window when I scrub the timeline.
    Premier Pro worked fine yesterday, with the same files.  I booted onto a back up drive that had my old CC program cloned...  And it still works fine..    I think it's safe to eliminate hardware issues as well as file / file types...
    I have deleted the Premier Pro app and reinstalled, I have reset the preferences, I have dumped the media cache.
    I have tried to set up new files, both on the internal hard drive, as well as an external...  ( both work fine with the old system backup )
    Still the same NON results...
    Running on an iMac, using OS 10.8.5
    Processor  3.5 GHz Intel Core i7
    Memory  32 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
    Graphics  NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780M 4096 MB
    Any solutions would be greatly appreciated....

  • Quicktime Plays only sound no video

    I have had this problem for a while now and never really tried to figure out the problem until now. I just upgraded Quicktime to 7.0 today but I still can't see any video when playing a .MOV file all I get it sound. That goes for if I try to play it in anyother type of player. I have tried to find help but so far I have come up empty. I just want to be able to play .mov files and see video. I hope someone can help me out here thanks.

    The first thing I noticed was that you used Microsoft Word to make your Web page code. Bad choice and sloppy code.
    Your movies do not "stream" (they download) so the extra hint tracks are a waste of bandwidth and are not needed in the movies.
    You are linking directly to the .mov files (also bad). Many computers (PC's) will simply try and download the files. Each movie link should be in it's own html coded page and should have the proper object and embed tags or the QuickTime plug-in may not work. Internet Explorer requires these tags to turn on ActiveX. Many PC users will never be able to see your movies without them.
    Last is the fact that you've used the H.264 video codec in the files. This codec requires the viewer to have QuickTime 7 or the Windows Public Preview 3 installed on their computers. This leaves out Windows 95, 98, ME and Mac users running anything under 10.3.9.
    Sorry for all the negative news. This is how most of us learned, too.
