Quicktime Pro (7.6.4) - recent inability to flatten & save large files
Hi,
I've been happily cutting, editing and saving files with Quicktime Pro for well over a year but in the last month it has abruptly stopped flattening and saving files larger that about 155 MB - I can save up to about 20 minutes but no more. This means I'm having to chop MOV files into bits and save in several parts. Can anyone explain what on earth is going on? If I leave it to attempt to save the big files it doesn't flatten them nor several hours later has it saved anything - just 4KB files. I use Flip4Mac with Quicktime but that seems to be working fine. I also have the Perian plug-in which was recently updated.
If anyone can suggest a way or working around this problem I'd be keen to hear it.
Many thanks, Tanya
i do have the same problem
i can´t see any file (no png, no jpeg)
but i asked this problem before and never got an answer

Quicktime Pro: When Exporting for Web, how much does it reduce file size?
I'm considering purchasing Quicktime Pro so I can reduce the file size of Quicktime movies so they load quickly to be viewed on my website. Can anyone tell me how much I can expect to be able to reduce the size of a Quicktime file?
I will try some. 50-100 kB for a 4-color PDFs sounds high if any compression at all is used in the graphic. I would suggest that you look a bit at the graphics. They may not be "16-color" graphics (you may have used 4 colors, but the graphic storage would have to be 16 color, 256 color, or millions of colors and I suspect the storage is millions of colors that a lot of scans default to). You could use PhotoShop or simply IrfanView to check the properties of the colors of the images. That would be the first step I would suggest.
Once you have the colors set, then save them as TIFF to minimize loss in the graphic. TIFF has several options for compression and I really can't advise you there. Just select whatever is the default compression. I created a 8.5X11 image with 72dpi and 16 colors, getting a 55 kB file. The corresponding PDF was 60 kB. There is pixelization and such, but that is something for you to test.
Once you you have reasonable graphics, then consider the PDF. As I said, I ended up with a 60 kB PDF. A segment of the PDF is shown below as a JPeg:
When you put the files together, use Save As to finalize the PDF. Working on the graphics first is probably the best way to fix the issue, rather than dealing with the PDF directly. This allows you to clean up the PDFs and be sure that you have the level of colors (not millions, even if you only use 4) etc. -
Will Quicktime Pro for Windows convert a .MOV file to a time lapse?
I have a six hour tripcoming up next weekend, and want turn a full length bullet cam video(native .MOV) of it into a time lapse to post. I have found tons of info saying QuicktimePro will go from stills to time lapse, but only one reference to converting an existing 1080P .mov file into one.
Any and all help and or direction will be greatly appreciated!QuickTime Player Pro can open image sequences and export to an image sequence. This will create a series of still image files, sequentially named to a folder you create.
Open the video and choose Export from the File menu. In the next dialog window choose "Movie to Image Sequence" and then click the "Options" button. Here you set the "frame per second" and the file format (JPEG, PNG, etc.) and other options (like target file size or compression).
Set the FPS to one and one image file per second of video will be extracted and compressed. If your source was 30 fps then the first frame of the first second of the file will be saved. Set the fps to two and the first and fifteenth frame will be captured.
Some words of cation:
Be sure to create a new folder prior to the export. You don't want hundreds (or thousands) of image files cluttering your desktop.
Edit the source file prior to export to get a "long" shot of the action. Scene breaks will look awkward when they are played at high speed.
Don't make a 1080 file export to image sequence. If your source is 1080 use the View menu to change it to "Half Size". These half size image files will help keep the file size down and help playback on older machines.
Now that you have your folder of images choose "import Image Sequence" from the file menu and set your fps rate back to the same as your source file.
You'll note that file size of your exported/imported project will probably be larger than your source file (and maybe too big to share on the Web). Export it again "Movie to QuickTime Movie" and choose H.264 video codec and set an "average" data rate. This should crunch the file five times smaller. -
Bought Quicktime Pro and my computer died, do I have to buy it again?
I bought Quicktime Pro back in 2006, recently my laptop died and I had to get it a new harddrive. I still have the serial number cause I bought it online. But it says it's an invalid number and I can't use it. Do I have to buy it again?
Thank you!Make sure you're entering in both the user name and key code exactly as in the email Apple sent you. Any error in either, including leaving off a salutation (for instance, if the email says "Mr. John Smith") will cause the registration to error.
Hope this helps. -
Custom Quicktime pro export settings for iPhone
I want to custom export from Quicktime Pro, using h.264 in an mpeg4 container with a low data rate (about 400kb) and smaller size (400x220)
It imports into iTunes fine, but won't sync to my iPhone (error message: 'xxx' was not copied to the iPhone 'xxx' because it cannot be played on this iPhone.)
I've tried the Quicktime Pro preset called 'movie to iPhone', and it works fine: the movie copies to my iPhone. The filesize though, is far bigger than I know I can get it down to with custom settings.
I just can't get it to load onto my iPhone.
What am I missing? You've got Tiger and Automator! Learn how to use them help you make some "presets".
http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/automator/
You could also "hack" the .plist files found in the QuickTime Player.app and edit away.
Control-click on the QuickTime Player and choose "Show Package Contents". Inside the resources folder are a number of .plist files for presets. If you have the Developer Tools installed a double click on a .plist should open the Property List Editor. Change the settings to your liking, but beware.
I use Automator as either a "workflow" on a stand alone "application". Workflows can be triggered by a control click on a file where the "apps" act like AppleScript "Droplets". Drag a file to the droplet and let the application do its thing.
QuickTime Pro stores the "Most Recently Used" settings for many exports. These would be easy to re-construct or edit to allow you to create dozens of different "presets". Save each as an application (naming them may be troublesome) using Automator. -

.m2v file not playing in Quicktime Pro
I just purchased Quicktime Pro 7.6. I have a bunch of MPEG2 (.m2v) files that worked on my old iMac and am trying to get them to work on my new iMac. When I open the MPEG2 files using Quicktime, I get a "the file is not a movie file" error. Again, these are the same MPEG2 files that worked on my previous iMac. When I open the files using VLC, the video works fine, but it VLC doesn't play MPEG2s with audio, nor can it convert. Any idea why Quicktime Pro would not be working? I've tried the files with and without the .m2v extensions also.
There should be a second, audio file that is associated with the m2v. The m2v container does not have the audio. VLC probably can't find the audio track.
So in other words, you guys are saying that Quicktime Pro does not come with the MPEG-2 player component, and that will be another $20?
Unfortunately, that is correct. Another option is [ffmpegx|http://ffmpegx.com>. It is shareware and costs $15.

Why can't Quicktime Pro demux MPEG1 files?
After buying QuickTime Pro I discovered that I couldn't convert muxed MPEG1 files without losing the audio. I understand that QTP simply doesn't have that capability and now use MPEG Streamclip to demux the audio then I can import the video and demuxed audio file into iMovie and export it from there.
But why can't QTP demux it itself, to begin with? I don't see how a simple freeware app can do it but QTP, which isn't free, can't. I probably wouldn't have bought QTP if they spelled out clearly on the pages about Quicktime that it couldn't do this, just like how they point out the extra MPEG2 plugin you may need.
I don't regret purchasing QTP; I'm just disappointed that I didn't get everything I thought I was paying for, and that I have to take extra steps to convert old video clips.Mike, it can't edit or convert Real, WMV and a lot of AVI's using some codecs as well. I think it would be a fair question if they ever represented that it could which they don't - in fact they say it will not export audio with muxed MEPG 1 , and 2 files.
It edits "editable" video while MPEG is a delivery format that is not that great to edit even if it is decent enough quality (since there are not actual frames each 1/30th of a second to edit for starters).
MPEG Streamclip is best looked at as not better than QT Pro but an adjunct to help do some file conversions (and with the latest version a LOT of file conversions) to a QT format that you could then use in QT pro to edit, add tracks to and so on. Or to DV for Life/FCE for editing more complex jobs.
This complaint or observation is often heard for iMovie and Final Cut as well and Apple says the same thing, don't use MPEG as source video for these editors - they are not MPEG editors and were not sold as such. -
I have some HDV video files imported through iMovie to .MOV files with Apple Intermediate Codec.
I need to convert these to Windows compatible video files of the highest possible ( least loss) quality. What export options in Final Cut Pro or in Quicktime Pro should I select? The codex in the converted files must not be Apple Intermediate Codec, for which there is no Windows version.Okay, I read the whole Flip4Mac website.
Flip4Mac is an application for Apple computers.
Perhaps my question was unclear. When I posed it I was thinking of asking somebody with an Apple shop to do the conversion for me, and wanted advice on settings for his QUicktime Pro /Final Cut Pro that would produce the highest quality Windows -compatible files.
The Windows version of Quicktime will not play Quicktime files with Apple Intermediate Codec. You get black screen video, although the audio does come through.
So here's what I need: I need a Windows application that will transcode Quicktime files in Apple Intermediate Codec, with no loss or very little loss, to WIndows-compatible files. All Windows, all the time. Thank you. -
ITunes AAC import settings relative to QuickTime Pro settings
QuickTime Pro has the following two additional AAC import settings that iTunes does not have:
Quality: Faster, Fast, Normal, Better, Best
Encoding Strategy: Average Bit Rate, Variable Bit Rate, Variable Bit Rate Constrained, Constant Bit Rate
iTunes does have a Use Variable Bit Rate check box, though.
Which values for these settings does iTunes use? Is it different if you have purchased QuickTime Pro? Wlll the settings in QuickTime Pro affect iTunes?
I tried converting the same WAV file in both iTunes & QuickTime Pro. I varied the settings in QuickTime Pro, and used VBR in iTunes. The closest files that I generated in QuickTime Pro used Normal Quality with either Average Bit Rate or Variable Bit Rate (though I didn't try every permutation of settings). Both files were different than the iTunes file, however.
Thanks for any info in advance,
RossFWIW, you're not alone - I am hitting this bug too.
version: iTunes 10.0.1 (22)
OS: MacOS 10.6.4
machine: iMac 27", Core i7, 8GB.
I did find a workaround just now:
In my experience, when you choose "Custom..." from the "Settings:" drop list, the custom settings window flickers (as in, appears/disappears) rapidly for a couple of seconds before iTunes finally crashes and you are prompted to send a support dump to Apple.
I have found that after selecting "Custom..." and seeing the flickering custom settings window, if I very quickly hit and release Command-Tab to switch to another application (in this case Safari, with an open browser window - not sure if it makes a difference), instead of iTunes crashing, I will see iTunes bouncing away in the Dock as if it has something to say to me, and when I Command-Tab back to it, the custom settings window is sitting there, not flickering, and I have now successfully made changes to the AAC import settings in this way.
The weird thing is, I found this out a few minutes back as I was composing iTunes feedback to Apple stating how to reproduce the bug in a Safari window, and so I was carefully noting what steps I needed to take to cause the bug... after seeing the flickering custom settings window, I Command-Tab'd away from iTunes to Safari, and in doing so stumbled upon this workaround.
I hope this is of help to you,

Can't play .avi file by QuickTime Pro
I am a paid QuickTime Pro user. However, I can't play some .avi files. No images, no sound. It just pop up a window shows,
" Additional software is required for QuickTime to playback this media. It may be available from the QuickTime Components page. Click Continue to check for the software."
Then it leads me to the following page,
http://www.apple.com/quicktime/resources/components.html?os=OSX&ctype=696d6463&c subtype=58564944
If any of you confront this problem? And how did you resolve it?
Thanks a lot
JuliaYou need Perian from http://perian.org/
You should read this support page http://perian.org/#support in case you need to delete older codecs. -
Quicktime Pro and .ts MPEG2 Files
I posted a similar question in the AppleTV forum, but thought it may be better suited here.
I have some HD .ts files that I'd like to convert for use with my AppleTV when it arrives. If I buy Quicktime Pro, would it be able to convert the file into an appropriately formatted AppleTV-ready file? Would I need to purchase the MPEG2 addon as well? If this is possible, would there be any steps that I would need to go through, or would be it as simple as opening the file and selecting 'Export to AppleTV'?
Also, what kind of editing capabilities are built-in to Quicktime Pro? Would I be able to make simple cuts to remove scenes/commercials that I did not want before exporting? If I buy Quicktime Pro, would it be able to convert the file into an appropriately formatted AppleTV-ready file? No. In addition to the proble of opening such files, QT does not preserve the audio found in "muxed" formats which converting the MPEG-2 video data. A better application for conversion here would be MPEG Streamclip (free). It will handle TS files and either convert them directly to TV compatible files or convert them to DV files which and be edited in iMove, FCE, FCP, etc. before final conversion for TV use. This workflow does not require QT Pro, but I usually recommend purchasing it you think you may want to do any of a number of operations. While Streamclip is best suited for MPEG edits, merges, and sequential processes, QT excells at the layering of multiple tracks and other facets -- so the two really complement one another.
Would I need to purchase the MPEG2 addon as well?Yes, both MPEG Streamclip and QT require the MPEG-2 QT component for conversion of MPEG-2 (but not MPEG-1) files. "Muxed" MPEG formats (MPEG-1 or MPEG-2) do not retaing audio when converted by QT Pro or iTunes. In addition, QT does not support AC3 audio natively -- yet another reason for using MPEG Streamclip.
If this is possible, would there be any steps that I would need to go through, or would be it as simple as opening the file and selecting 'Export to AppleTV'?This is really up to you. You can, of course, convert to an TV compatible file directly from MPEG Streamclip. Or, you can convert to a fully compatible QT format like DV or Animation which can then be converted to an TV filr using either the "adaptive" feature of QT Pro's "Movie to TV" export option (or applications that access QT Pro options) which will create an TV compatible file based on the current display saize and frame rate (or use QT Pro's manual "Movie to MPEG-4" export option).
Also, what kind of editing capabilities are built-in to Quicktime Pro?Basically, you can do anything from chaptering you files to layering a "picture-in-picture" display.
Would I be able to make simple cuts to remove scenes/commercials that I did not want before exporting? Not in QT Pro but you can both trim and merge MPEG-2 content. The process is simple and straight forward once you know how. If you to do more, like add titles, transitions, and stills, add audio overlays/blends, add special effects, add chapters, and create outputs in numerous delivery formats, then use of a full editor application would be better. -
How Can i Transfer dvd movie files using quicktime pro
I bought quicktime pro under the impression that you can convert dvd movie files into ipod format if anybody has an answer please respond!!!!????
QuickTime Pro can't even view DVD formats without some help.
DVD's are "protected" with CSS software encryption and can't be viewed with the Pro version of QT.
Find some third party software (hundreds of apps) by looking and searching through the iPod Discussions pages. -
Quicktime Pro 7 "Share" Option Missing
Hi,
I just purchased Quicktime Pro 7 for Windows specifically so I could share QT files via email.
When I click on "File" according to what I've read there should be a "Share" option, but there isn't one.
Basically I'm trying to take 4GB or 8GB files and share them for review by clients.Try this codec, Perian. It will replace the DivX and XviD codecs but not the Flip4Mac codec. You should remove both the DivX and XviD codecs. Then install the Perian component...repair permissions...restart your computer.
http://perian.org/#detail
Hope this fixes your problem. This usually will fix problems with avi's. If not keep the Perian component installed. And we'll try something else.
If you have to come back for another fix. Open the question video in Quicktime, do a command+i to find out what the codec in the avi is...and report that in here. -

Yes, I've contacted Kodak support - and yes, they are useless.
