Quicktime Pro Really Slow to Load Movies

Hi,
Anyone have any idea why after getting Quicktime pro it is so slow to load movies? I have an iMac with 2Gigs of Ram, less than a year old...
I read about the disk permissions thing, but it doesn't seem to have helped...
Thanks in advance!

I don't know if this is still a problem for you, but I first noticed it when I upgraded to 7.2 in Tiger.
It seems that QT is loading the whole movie into RAM before it starts playing. This is really annoying with long movies, the beachball just spins until QT has loaded all 350 megs into a buffer somewhere. I've started using VLC instead. No settings that I can find will alter this behaviour, and I've tried moving various third-party plug-ins around to no avail.
Note: the behaviour persists with QT 7.3 in Tiger (10.4.10) but seems to have been fixed in Leopard (10.5). Since I'm slowly migrating to Leopard, I guess the problem is semi-solved.

    Additional things to try.
Try this first. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
Change the channel on your wireless router. Instructions at http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
Another thing to try - Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.

  • IPod touch is REALLY slow to load and won't connect to iTunes on the PC

I have an iPod touch that won't connect to my iTunes account anymore.  It is also really really slow to load.  I have powered it down and back up and it is still really slow.  Has anyone else experienced this?

    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try on another computer to help determine if you have a computer or iPod problem.
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

  • Slow to load movies

    Hi all,
Well I've finally had it with Apple TV - current gen.
Seems to be getting slower to rent a movie. 540 hours was my initial time estimate that dropped to 3 hours and then just sits for a while. Eventually 23 minutes and after 20 minutes I'm still at 23 minutes or sometimes more.
This has resulted in me now renting The Hobbit twice!
Here's something that I'd love to know about - the first time I rented The Hobbit was Friday night. We waited 1 hour and finally it started. But it was so late we went to bed. By the time I got home the next day - it had expired...
So I rented it again Saturday night. This time after sitting for an hour waiting - I got fedup and went to bed. I left it sitting on so it might download.
Sunday night I sit down at 6pm to check and it says Ready to Play. But my wife and kid are busy so I go to My Computer and watch a previously downloaded podcast. Then another - both on my iMac so I'm streaming.
Then when we sit down to watch the movie - which I've rented twice now - it says 3 hours again and the previously filled up white download bar is gone and it's back to the 23 minute mark where I finished on Friday night before hitting bed... hmmm.
This is terrible. I mean Youtube works fine. Trailers work fine, Vimeo works fine. My internet works fine, I did the network check on the ATV and it's fine - so why oh why does this happen?
I've checked on a few forums and there are dozens - yep dozens of pages of complaints about this very problem. Apple please address this.
    Regards
    Rob

  • Mac Book Pro really slow

My mac book just recently became really slow. I have been on sites that have a good amount of popups, so could that be the problem? also, how can i speed it back up? It takes forever to open any app, close any app, write something, for it to do literally anything. any one know what is wrong with it?
    thanks in advance!!!

First, back up all data immediately, as your boot drive might be failing.
There are a few other possible causes of generalized slow performance that you can rule out easily.
    Reset the System Management Controller.
If you have many image or video files on the Desktop with preview icons, move them to another folder.
If applicable, uncheck all boxes in the iCloud preference pane.
Disconnect all non-essential wired peripherals and remove aftermarket expansion cards, if any.
Check your keychains in Keychain Access for excessively duplicated items.
Boot into Recovery mode, launch Disk Utility, and run Repair Disk.
Otherwise, take the steps below when you notice the problem.
    Step 1
Launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the icon grid.
Select the CPU tab of the Activity Monitor window.
Select All Processes from the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected.
Click the heading of the % CPU column in the process table to sort the entries by CPU usage. You may have to click it twice to get the highest value at the top. What is it, and what is the process? Also post the values for % User, % System, and % Idle at the bottom of the window.
Select the System Memory tab. What values are shown in the bottom part of the window for Page outs and Swap used?
Next, select the Disk Activity tab. Post the approximate values shown for Reads in/sec and Writes out/sec (not Reads in and Writes out.)
    Step 2
If you have more than one user account, you must be logged in as an administrator to carry out this step.
Launch the Console application in the same way you launched Activity Monitor. Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Select the 50 or so most recent entries in the log. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V). You're looking for entries at the end of the log, not at the beginning.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some personal information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting. That should be easy to do if your extract is not too long.

  • REALLY Slow Internet Loading--Is there a way to make it faster?

I bought a new Macbook 3 weeks ago at the Apple store. I am a long-time pc user who took the Apple plunge mostly because I am sick of getting viruses all the time. Unfortunately, I am pretty disappointed with the speed of the Internet and REALLY slow loading of websites--especially business websites (cnn.com, WAMU, Citibank, WSJ, etc.) It's not my wireless internet connection because I did a side-by-side test. I sat on my couch with my 4 year old Dell pc and the new Macbook and went to the same websites at exactly the same time. My old Dell was always faster loading each website and in some business-related or video-related sites, about 35-55 seconds faster. Is there anyway to make the apple load websites faster or is slow internet just the price I have to pay to be virus-free? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks,

Well here are some things for you.
the macbook has a 2.4 and 5 GHz wifi module. If you have a N wifi router, it may have the ability to process at the 5 GHz range. Un fortunately most receivers are operating in the 2.4 GHz range.
My recommendation is to lock your access point to either 2.4 if it is a draft N spec or G only if a B/G AP.
If you are using security to lock down your access point and are using WPA or WPA2, set the encryption to AES only.
If you have a draft N AP also set the channel width to 20/40
If you have draft N ad set it to 2.4 you will only get 130 Mb speeds on the Macbook. that is the limitation of not using 5 GHz
Check the forums of your AP manufacturer for known issues and make sure your firmware is up to date.
There is nothing inherent with Macs that make the internet slower. They use the same technology as everyone else. The issue is with how you have your AP set and how the adapter in the MB is setup.
I am going to go out on a limb and assume you do not understand the differences in the settings, frequencies, etc of wireless so it might do you good to learn a bit about it first so you better understand how to get the most out of your equipment. I hope what I have posted gets you started int he right direction

  • Quicktime Pro Windows - Why are Trimmed Movies Being Saved at Player Size?

When I trim a video clip (ProRes 422 HQ) in Quicktime Pro 7 Windows, and re-save it as a self contained movie, it seems to save the trimmed clip at the current image size of the player window.
Based on the size of the new file, it seems like the full-size data is there, but the file's properties are somehow being tagged to play back at a reduced image size. (This is confusing some of the NLEs I'm trying out.)
Can this property be undone? So the clip is always trimmed and saved to play back at the original image size? Thanks.

If it matters, I have a Canon camcorder and imported the clips using a firewire cable. The external drive is connected via a second firewire cord to the other firewire port.

  • Problems Using QuickTime Pro on Windows to Compress Movies for E-mailing

I have a windows system but just installed QuickTime Pro because I understood it would allow compression of movies (home movie segments of no more than 5 minutes) to facilitate e-mailing them. QuickTime instructions describing easy use of a "Share" feature seem geared to the MAC operating system--I have no such option. I've tried opening my movie using Quicktime, going to File, exporting (Movie to Quicktime Movie) with default settings (H.264 compression, quality high, key frame rate 24, etc., audio at format integer, sample rate 11.024 khz, etc.) and prepare for internet streaming (fast start). The movie goes into my Quick Time movie files without much compression--going from an AVI file of 60.4 MB to a quicktime movie of 40.8 MB. This is much larger than the quicktime movies emailed to me of longer duration which were only a few MB. Any help for a novice who at this point only wants to compress and email movies? Thanks.

That sounds like the sound is being exported in
uncompressed format. Suggest you open one of these
filesw and use MovieInfo in the Windows menu to see
what format is being used for the sound. If it is
listed as uncompressed or raw or PCM, you may want to
try using mpeg-4 sound (aac or advance audio
    compression).
Thanks much. I tried saving the file using the AAC option (rather than Linear PCM) and that got it down only slightly (from 40.8 to 40.5 MB). I'll just keep experimenting.

  • Copy of submitted requests really slow to load LOV

Anyone else have this issue? When trying to copy a previously submitted request it takes forever to load LOV's. I'm not sure if it is the form, FNDRSRUN, or something else. If anyone else has dealt with this please advise.
    Thanks.

What exactly am I looking for on the trace? You need to look for the statement when you click on the Copy button -- Enable trace before you open the form for the first time, reproduce the issue, disable trace and generate the TKPROF file and upload the file here (if possible).

  • Acrobat 9 Reader and Pro extremely slow when loading.

Machine: Dell Precision T3500 with an Quad Core Intel® Xeon® W3540 2.93GHz, 8M L3, 4.8GT/s Turbo processor with Windows XP Pro 32-bit and 4GB RAM NECC 1066Mhz installed.
When installing, uninstalling, restarting, reinstalling Acrobat 9 Reader and Pro, or Acrobat 9.2 Reader and Pro, and upon opening a PDF double-clicked on opens Acrobat as expected but it would take an incredibly long time to open the PDF. Opening the application and then going to File, Open also recreates the effect. When the PDF opens, you can see vector drawings appear line by line as if running on a really old machine like a Pentium II and having the computer pause like as if it has frozen up until after waiting a minute or two. During that time, Windows XP is unresponsive until after waiting for the PDF file to load. Diffferent varieties of PDF with simple one-page text to complex PDF's with scanned, vector and hundreds of pages of text has both recreated the frozen in time effect. And when scrolling to different pages within a PDF, the scrolling is choppy, jerky, and at times, pauses to have drawings to appear.
In the past, applications behaving erratically in this fashion was traced down to the software incompatible with HyperThreading and multiple processors. Does anyone know if this might be the case with Xeon processor listed above or similar hardware? Has anyone else experience this? Information about a possible issue mentioned above after searching produced no hits both at Adobe or out there.
    Thanks in advance.

    Thanks for your input.
Installing only one or the other (Reader vs Pro and either 9 or 9.2) produced no improvement and the same delay.
Disabling malware applications and then uninstalling them one at a time also produced no improvement.
Disabling the HyperThreading feature within the BIOS/CMOS did not help.
The only workaround so far is to launch Adobe Reader or Pro first, go into Task Manager and then "Set Affinity..." and have only one check mark on any CPU from CPU 0 through CPU 7. Then either drag the PDF into the Adobe Reader or Pro, or go to File and then Open to load the PDF. This process was the only way so far to "normally" open and immediately view and scroll the PDF regardless of complexity without delays or freezes.
Has anyone else been able to reproduce the problem and test the workaround on similar hardware?
    Thanks in advance.

  • Does QuickTime Pro convert an ISO DVD movie to an mp4?

I'm thinking about purchasing the Pro version of QuickTime; but what I REALLY want to do is convert some ISO DVD Image files to the QuickTime mp4 format so I can put it on my iPod or view it with my AppleTV.
Does anyone out there know if this is possible BEFORE I spend money on this?
    Thanks,

Does anyone out there know if this is possible BEFORE I spend money on this?
QT does not support "muxed" MPEG2/PCM or MPEG2/AC3 au either purchase the QT MPEG-2 Playback Component ($19.99) and download the free MPEG Streamclip app or use the free HandBrake app to convert your DVD imaged content MP4/M4V content for playback on mobile devices.

  • QuickTime 7.2 Won't Load Movies

I've used QuickTime as my primary video preview application, daily, for some time now. Since the recent QuickTime update, the applications seems to be performing horribly. Standard MPEG4 files that previously worked fine now take in excess of three minutes to load into QuickTime. This goes for Finder preview panes as well. I have tried deleting and reinstalling QuickTime to no avail.
More often than not, trying to launch these files hangs the application, demanding a Force Quit and trying again. Oddly, streaming videos seem to work as usual.
I would greatly appreciate any help on this matter.
    Thanks!

    A. Lee, I've also seen this problem on my new Vista PC. My other PC running Media Center 2005 has no problem playing videos with 7.2. This appears to be a Vista problem. I uninstalled iTunes and Quicktime, along with painfully removing all entries in my registry, then reinstalled Quicktime by itself. All .mov and .mp4 files drive the hard drive for about a minute then appear for 2 sec and play. I never get any video, but get about 2-4 sec of music about every 30 sec. Then you can't get Quicktime to shut down.

  • IMovie 08 really slow to load then prone to freezing up

    Hi
I have been using iMovie 08 for about 9 months. I have an iMac 2.4GHZ Intel with 3 GB of SDRAM running OS X 10.5.5 and more than 90 GB free space on my hardrive.
But over the past few weeks whenever I start it up it takes anywhere from 90 minutes to over 2 hours to load! And this is with nothing else running at all.
I have no events in iMovie that need loading --- no events! --- but I do have 12 open projects on my internal drive (none of them HD) each about 6 minutes long, and none with any video over 90mb.
When iMovie does finally load it works fine for awhile, anywhere from 15 minutes to 5 or 6 hours at a time. But as I work at some point it eventually always hangs up and I have to force quit it. I try leaving it up over night or over the weekend with nothing else running but it never comes back.
I have tried fixing permissions, deleting the plist, running maintenance scripts through Onyx, and even reloading the app, but nothing changes its terribly slow loading and freezing up habit. The thing just won’t load promptly and keeps hanging after awhile. At this point it’s become all but useless.
Anyone else experiencing this? Anyone have suggestions for repairing it?
    Please help. Thanks.

Those QuickTime items seem Kosher enough..
Well, if you don't want to do an update, here are a few more ideas:
You say that you don't have any other accounts. Try making a new one - in System Preferences>Accounts, and then click on the little + sign at the bottom of the left-hand column. If you're creating a password for this new account, I suggest writing it down!
Then log out of your normal account (..under the apple symbol at top-left of the screen..) and log into the new account.
If there is a difference ..i.e; if iMovie loads quickly, as normal.. then the fault lies in something within (..possibly a folder within..) your normal 'Home' folder, and not in Applications, nor the main Libraries, nor anywhere that elements of the iMovie program itself are stored. Possibly your iMovie Preference file (..see next paragraph).
If it does NOT make a difference ..i.e; it's still slow.. then Quit from iMovie, log out of that new User account and log back into your normal account, and go to <your 'Home' folder>/Library/Preferences and delete the file called "com.apple.iMovie7.plist" (..and if there are any other "com.apple.iMovie.plist" files there, delete those, too). That Preference file may be corrupt, and so iMovie may be waiting to try and find your last-run iMovie project, but under a different, corrupt, filename.
If, on restarting iMovie, that doesn't fix it, then I'd guess that there's a corrupt item within the iMovie 'package'. (..The iMovie program, in Applications, isn't just a program: if you Ctrl-click on its name and choose 'Show Package Contents' you'll find many different items which, together, make up the iMovie 'program'..)
That's the point at which to consider replacing the corrupt iMovie 'package' with a fresh one from your original disc(s). If you haven't backed up your Applications via Time Machine, then you can't Restore a pre-problem version of iMovie from your TM backups. But restoring from TM is simpler than extracting iMovie from your original disc(s). (..It's what TM is for; get a corrupt item? ..Simply and easily restore it with just a few clicks..)
So - unless anyone else comes up with better ideas! - I'd say (..after trying those diagnostics and suggestions above, and they didn't improve things..) Restore your version of iMovie. I can't think of anything else.
