Can quicktime-pro convert .vob video files for play on itunes and the new ipod?

Vob files are muxed mpeg files and QT will not export the sound from such files: QT Mpeg Limitations
I am sure there are Windows programs that can convert mpeg-2 to formats QT can edit and export, although I don't know the specific applications you would have to use. You can use this freeware for the conversion of mpeg-1 files to uncompressed avi, which QT will accept and then be able to export both sound and video. Since it is an open source program you may find a version of it that works with mpeg-2.

Exporting Muxed Files in Quicktime Pro 7 w/ MPEG-2 Component

I have .mpg files I need to be able to get into iDVD. They are MPG-2 muxed files. I have quicktime pro and the mpeg-2 component. I can't for the life of me figure out how to do this. Everyway I try either fails halfway through or I get no audio. I've trying to convert them to Mpeg-4. The answer is probably easy but I am new to Mac. any help would be great.

As you have discovered, QT does not support the export of sound from muxed mpeg files. Fortunately, this freeware will export to several formats. It also allows you to do some editing of mpegs without re-encoding if that is desired: Mpeg StreamClip

Quicktime Pro - export as mpeg-4 works in iPod Touch but not iPhone 3G

If I use Movie to iPhone / iPhone (cellular) the quality is pretty dismal considering I use the component cable to pipe it out to HDTV.
So, I tried using movie to mpeg-4 as that allows options. However, the resulting video can be transferred over to an iPod Touch (latest hw/fw) but iTunes (latest version) complains the mp4 cannot be played on the iPhone 3G and thus did not transfer the file over.
Any ideas what settings I can use under Movie to MPEG-4 that will work for both iPod Touch and iPhone? I would like resolutions up to 720, 25 fps and at around 768kbits/sec.
Right now I'm using ffmpeg.exe and I do get great quality, but would like to use QuickTime Pro if possible.

I've tried Movie to iPhone but like I said I do watch movies piped out from the iPhone to HDTV via the component cables. I don't recall the bitrate and resolution offhand, but I know it could be better. Also why iPod Touch can take the Movie to MPEG-4 but not iPhone 3G?

How to go from VOBs into QuickTime Pro to Apple TV ?

How can I get a bunch of VOB files from a DVD so that I can use QuickTime Pro to convert to Apple TV ?
I have played for weeks with QuickTime Pro, MediaFork, HandBrake, MPEG StreamClip, VisualHub, iSquint, ffmpegX, Mac the Ripper, and more, and compared outputs. I have tried all kinds of bit rates, 1 and 2 pass, etc. In the end, I personally like the QuickTime Pro conversions best, and I find that I have had very few problems with QuickTime Pro.
I want to use QuickTime Pro to convert a few of my DVD for Apple TV. With Quicktime Pro I can read a single VOB file and convert it but I don't get sound or all the VOB files that I need. How can I quickly, without a lengthy conversion, pull all the VOB files from a DVD so that I can convert them to Apple TV with QuickTime Pro ?

1) Pull the information off the DVD with NO video/audio conversion.This is not possible -- at least not possible to do without at least converting the AC3 Audio first. And, then it will only be possible if you have the QT MPEG-2 component installed. You appear to be operating under the misguided assumption that QT Pro -- a temporally synchronized, "frame-ro-frame" player/converter asset -- will work on a spatially synchronized file containing a single data stream of video data blocks interspersed with blocks of audio data. It won't. There are basically only two approaches here. Both require the use of an intermediate file format. (I.e., a conversion is required.):
1) The first approach is to use an application like MPEG Streamclip to convert your VOBs (both audio and video) to a less compressed format and/or editable format like "animation/PCM" or the "DV" format. However, since DV is an exacting specification which may change the frame rate and/or physical dimensions of your movies, I'd recommend "animation/PCM" here. This approach allows audio and video to be converted by QT Pro during a single conversion which usually eliminates the likelihood of audio and video going "out of sync."
2) The other approach requires you to use a third-party application (like MPEG Streamclip) to demux your VOBs to associated elementary MPEG-2 (M2V) and PCM (AIFF) files which QT Pro can handle either individually (may allow de-synchronization) or as a "resourced" pair (best approach) of files. In this case the M2V file contains the original, unconverted MPEG-2 data and the AIFF contains a stereo "mix-down" of the AC3 audio.
Recommend you try the second option here. Once the paired files are created, (without moving them) open the M2V in QT Pro by double-clicking it. This should open M2V which, in turn, references the AIFF file as a resource. (Not moving the files is to ensure the the resource path does not become broken.) In any case, you can now process the opened file(s) in QT Pro using the "Movie to TV" export option. Be advised that neither MPEG Streamclip nor QT Pro allow "easy" cropping of the video using this workflow. In addition, if you plan to customize the dimensions of a 16:9 "widescreen" 640 x 360 file to 720 x 405 or 854 x 480 for encoding, the dimensions must be changed in before selecting the export option.

Quicktime incomplete playback of MPEG-2 videos.

I have a couple of MPEG-2 files that Quicktime plays back flawlessly except that it believes that the file is shorter than it is.
For one file that is 2:01:40 Quicktime believes that the file ends at 1:31:40. VLC will play the entire file.
I have Quicktime Pro and the MPEG-2 plug in running on 10.4.7.
I'd really like this to work in FrontRow, suggestions?

How big are the files? I believe that QT has a file
size limit (4GB?).
Another possibility is that there may be a timecode
break. If so, you can use MPEG Streamclip to fix it.

It seems MPEG Streamclip suffers from the same syndrome as QT and it appears the only way to play those movie is ... VLC!

Quicktime Pro Mpeg

Before I purchase an upgrade to Quicktime Pro, I would like to know if by using Quicktime Pro, I can convert MQV video files to Mpegs or not. Thankyou for your time.

I thought that Mpeg was the most recent format, and that it was the most popular. I want to copy my MQV files from Sony Memorystick onto DVD, but it won`t work unless they are either Mpeg or Wav files. Quicktime is the only player that will play my MQV files. I just want to be able to make a DVD of my video files, but it`s looking less and less possible (-_-;)

Why doesn't QuickTime 7 or QT-PRO or the MPEG 2 Plug-In play DVD\VOB files?

I can’t tell you how ripped off I feel. Please explain why you don't come out and say “QuickTime 7, The latest, greatest, best thing since sliced bread, doesn’t play DVD\VOB files. Neither does the $32 QuickTime-Pro nor the $23 MPEG 2 Plug-In. Why did I have to pay $55 dollar to find this out? The ads are deceptive. Maybe it’s by accident, once you know it doesn't play commercially-produced DVD movies and you re-read the ads you notice that they never come out and say it will play commercial DVDs either. The only place it actually comes out and says it does not play commercial DVD Movies is in the last sentence of the help file that says you need to purchase the plug in to play VOB movies......

The first paragraph says this:
"If you have the optional QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback Component"(a Link to the store) "installed with QuickTime 6 or later, you can play back video in Video Object (VOB files), which are used in the DVD-Video specification and contain the mutiplexed audio and MPEG-2 video data."
Then in the very last sentence on the page it says "Please note that the component will not play back encrypted VOB files, such as those found on commercially-produced DVDs, in QuickTime Player."

Mr. Napoli, I fully understand that it is illegal to circumvent the anti-coping protection however, it is my Understanding via "Fair use and Practices" provisions in the US copyright laws that I can make a copy of my DVD for personal use. If this was truly illegal then Apple's MAC app "HandBrake" is illegal. So lets not pretend the functionality to move/copy commercial DVD content to your IPOD for viewing is outside of Apple's realm, it’s not. As far as being “clearly stated” the information would have to be presented on the same page as the offer to purchase in order to be “clearly stated”. Apple puts the info in a “support” FAQ you would only read after you realize the software doesn’t do what you expected. The application support guys at my local store told me today that “everyone thinks that QuickTime will let you watch commercial DVDs” Apple need to offe3r a “FREE” update enabling this functionality.

NO AUDIO with QuickTime Pro and MPEG-2 Playback

I just purchased Sony Camcorder (Sony DCR-DVD610 DVD Handycam Camcorder with 40x Optical Zoom) and recorded some movies. But when I tried to view it through my iMac (Version 10.4.11) the MPG format files wouldn't played.
So I purchased "QuickTime Pro 7.5" and "MPEG-2 Playback" -- Well, the movies finally played BUT NO AUDIO at all. I also downloaded several supported codecs but still failed -- NO AUDIO.
Anybody knows the answer?. Please help -- Thanks much!

All DVD camcorders I've seen use AC3 for audio. As QT Kirk pointed out, this audio format is not supported natively by QT which is why you need the latest Perian or the A52 codec installed.
The camcorder comes with 3" DVD+RW. Since my computer is iMac with CD/DVD drive slot on the side, I can't play the 3" DVD. The drive only play the regular 6" CD/DVD...
I believe Rick was trying to find out if you can connect the camcorder via the USB cable (closing iMovie '08 if it opens) and access the movies at the file level directly from the camcorder. If you can see the files on the camcorder, then they can be copied to your hard drive and/or opened in MPEG Streamclip for viewing/conversion to iMovie '08 "edit" compatible file formats. The free MPEG Streamclip application, together with the $20 MPEG-2 Playback component which you have already purchased, will allow you to convert your video files to DV, AIC, M-JPEG, Photo-JPEG, MPEG-4, or H.264 video with DV, AIFF (Big/Little Endian), Uncompresses, AAC, etc. compatible audio. DO NOT CONVERT TO APPLE ANIMATION OR APPLE VIDEO COMPRESSION FORMATS as they will import and edit but not export properly from iMovie '08. DO NOT USE QT PRO (or any other QT application) TO CONVERT YOUR FILES as this work flow will not retain the original audio content. (I.e., your original QT Pro conversion attempt may have lost the original audio content and, if so, no added component will now allow you to hear the non-existent audio.)

Quicktime Pro won't open an MPEG movie file with the Quicktime icon

What am I missing? Not getting? I have several MPEG movie files that proudly sport the Quicktime icon, but the Quicktime app tells me they're not movie files.
If Quicktime won't open them, is there conversion software I can use?

Didn't even consider it. I thought that because the file displayed the Quicktime icon and because I have Quicktime Pro, that Quicktime would play the file.
Unfortunately, this is a common misconception. However, now that you understand the problem, you can work on a solution. Basically, if by MPEG your are referring to common MPEG-2/MP2 content 'multiplexed" to an MPEG container, these can be played in the QT Player (or Front Row or iTunes) if you install the QT MPEG-2 Playback component ($19.99). However, be advised that this is a video only component, so it does not make "muxed" AC3 MPEG-2 files playback compatible with the QT player. Luckily, if you do decide to install this component, the free MPEG Streamclip application will allow you to play or convert such files to any QT compatible audio and video format for which you system is configured. Or, if all you want to do is play MPEG-2 video files without investing in the QT component, then you can view them with VLC but may have trouble converting them to a QT compatible format. HandBrake will also convert them without investing in the MPEG-2 component, but greatly limits your conversion possibilities. I personally would recommend buying the component as Neil recommended since it offers the greatest flexibility for playing without conversion, as well as, the most conversion options for all normal MPEP-2 Program and Transport Stream files you are likely to encounter using QT 7 Pro and/or MPEG Streamclip depending on the specific source content what you want to do with the final files.

Can QuickTime Pro embed an MP3 in an MPEG-4, MPEG-2, or FLV container?

I'm just looking for some software that'll let me upload an MP-3 to YouTube. That's pretty much the beginning and end of my interest in QuickTime Pro or anything similar.

What do You Tube ask for?
MPEG-2 is not a container - it is a multiplexed A/V format used for DVD. QT won't output to FLV (Flash) without buying Flash (mega $) and since when you send to You Tube they make and post it in FLV (or now MP4) for you I think they don't actually ask for FLV do they?
You want to send a video with no video, just audio? You can open an MP3 and save that as a MOV file, there will just be audio (MP3) in a MOV container. Something like MPEG Streamclip should let you open the MP3 and export to an MP4 movie with no movie just AAC audio.

Converting .mov file to mpeg-4 from Quicktime Pro (Player 7)

I have, in the past, converted .mov files to mpeg-4 with Quicktime Pro successfully, without quality being an issue. However, now the quality of the movie is grainy and pixellating. What am I doing wrong? Please help me. Thank you.

Sounds like a setting has changed on you. Have you done an upgrade of QuickTime? Have you exported a low-res version of something recently. My QT Pro setting always seem to default to the most recent settings.
Also, when exporting to .mp4, I find that the H.264 setting seems to work better...especially when I crank up the data rate.

MPEG to MPEG-4 or H.264 Quicktime Pro issues

Today, as I sit anticipating my new ipod video's arrival I decided to take the time to convert some of my MPG files to H.264 and MPEG-4 with my new version of Quicktime Pro that is supposed to convert these for your iPod. Soon to find out when you convert them there is no way to get the audio converted. So now my new ipod video is useless to me and wish I didn't buy it because I can't play any of my videos on it. well... maybe I'll still keep it for the music... but if anyone can shed some light on this it would be a big help.

on a Mac use Handbrake and use MPEG-4 instead of h.264
you can customize the video resolution (320x240) and the audio
works great. i've already tested a couple and they work on the iPod fine....

No Sound when converting MPEG file to MOV - Quicktime Pro

Hi Everyone,
Just got my first Mac (MacBook Pro) which I love but I'm having a problems importing MPEG 4 files from my Sony digital camera. They play fine through quicktime in the sony format but when I import into quicktime (or imovie for that matter) then export in a .mov file all the sound is lost.
I see some people have reported problems with sound similar to mine but none appear to be the same?
Any ideas??

I am having a similar problem and I see this was never persued any further. I am trying to convert an mpeg file to a mov file using quicktime pro. When I do there is no sound.
Movie info for mov file is: Format is H.264 Decoder, 320 x 240, Millions, FPS is 15, Data Rate is 256.21 kbits/sec.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm new to quicktime and frustrated from spending hours trying to figure this out! Thanks in advance!

Quicktime Pro 7 Error: -2048 | Want to convert mpeg-2 to .mov

Just purchased QTPro because I want to convert mpeg-2 (rtv) files to .mov... However, when I attempt to open an mpeg-2 file in QT - I get an error message stating it's a file quicktime doesn't understand -2048.
Any suggestions/ideas?

EDIT: if you want to have editable files, you must demux it.
Looking at the faq that Kirk just posted, I see that a muxed file (which you have) can only be transcoded to another format IF you don't try and touch the audio. I'm no professional but dislike working with muxed files. You may want to check out ffmpegx.
This program is awsome. It will demux mpegs into separate audio and video streams. These are much easier to work with. For example, if you want to cut a clip of a movie and save it separately, you can't if it is muxed (try it). I've had trouble at time when encoding to H.264 with QT7 pro, but have sucessfully used ffmpegx to do what crashed QT7.
BTW, there is a multimedia computer lab for student use in the basement of old chem. It is stocked with dual G5s and all the professional apps. More than you need, but they are a good resource.

Yes, the QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback Component combined with QuickTime Pro will allow the transcode of MPEG-2 video to other formats, whether that video originates in an elementary video stream or in a multiplexed stream. However, the audio that is interleaved with the video in a multiplexed stream cannot be transcoded to other formats. Transcoding is supported for video only.

MPEG 2 component issues for Quicktime Pro

Hi,
I'm using Quicktime Pro 6.5.3 on the below computer. Since I upgraded to OSX 3.9, my MPEG 2 player component won't work. Apple recommended I just download the component again. I did so, but when I tried to install it, my computer couldn't do so (probably because this latest MPEG2 component is for Quicktime 7).
Then, I remembered that I still had the MPEG2 player component installer for Quicktime 6 from years ago when I upgraded to 10.2.8. I just tried to install it and now I can't because I get a message that there is a newer version of the component already installed on the computer! So apparently the new MPEG2 component for Quicktime 7 DID install somewhat because it is now blocking me from using one that's more compatible with Quicktime 6. However I can't use this version 7 MPEG2 player cuz it isn't FULLY installed.
Anybody have any idea how to get around this? Is there a way to totally uninstall the Quicktime 7 MPEG2 player so I can try to reinstall the Quicktime 6 MPEG2 player?
Any help would be greatly appreciated. And I know I am using old versions of everything, but they work just fine for my purposes, and I don't want to upgrade all my multi-media software.

Did you try deleting the receipt file for the "latest" installation and then running the "older" installer?
Is there a way to totally uninstall the Quicktime 7 MPEG2 player so I can try to reinstall the Quicktime 6 MPEG2 player?
A clean system install would do it but most people don't want to go to the trouble of saving all active projects/documents and re-installing all of the non-system applications and/or utilities.
