Quicktime Pro won't open an MPEG movie file with the Quicktime icon

What am I missing? Not getting? I have several MPEG movie files that proudly sport the Quicktime icon, but the Quicktime app tells me they're not movie files.
If Quicktime won't open them, is there conversion software I can use?
So much for productivity.

Didn't even consider it. I thought that because the file displayed the Quicktime icon and because I have Quicktime Pro, that Quicktime would play the file.
Unfortunately, this is a common misconception. However, now that you understand the problem, you can work on a solution. Basically, if by MPEG your are referring to common MPEG-2/MP2 content 'multiplexed" to an MPEG container, these can be played in the QT Player (or Front Row or iTunes) if you install the QT MPEG-2 Playback component ($19.99). However, be advised that this is a video only component, so it does not make "muxed" AC3 MPEG-2 files playback compatible with the QT player. Luckily, if you do decide to install this component, the free MPEG Streamclip application will allow you to play or convert such files to any QT compatible audio and video format for which you system is configured. Or, if all you want to do is play MPEG-2 video files without investing in the QT component, then you can view them with VLC but may have trouble converting them to a QT compatible format. HandBrake will also convert them without investing in the MPEG-2 component, but greatly limits your conversion possibilities. I personally would recommend buying the component as Neil recommended since it offers the greatest flexibility for playing without conversion, as well as, the most conversion options for all normal MPEP-2 Program and Transport Stream files you are likely to encounter using QT 7 Pro and/or MPEG Streamclip depending on the specific source content what you want to do with the final files.

I suddenly can't watch .mov files with the QuickTime Player x? There is always the message, i should look after new software! Can you help me?

Handy-dandy cut and paste to the rescue!
you need to install some other stuff to get the full file functionality back.
    Here's the list.
    Start with QT 7.6.6. - http://support.apple.com/kb/DL923
Get Perian, and install it. - http://perian.org
    then VLC, - http://videolan.org
    DivX - http://divx.com - and the
    Flip4Mac package from Telestream - http://www.telestream.net/flip4mac/
A52/AC3 downloader: https://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/21875/a52codec - In this installer package there is an audio A52Codec.component. DO NOT USE IT! Throw it out and use the one that is linked below.
This is what I've put into my system and so far I've gotten every file to run fine, even my oldest videos.
These are codecs you should see.
    In System/Library/QuickTime
         AppleIntermediateCodec.component
AppleMPEG2Codec.component* (*optional if you've bought it)
         DivX Decoder.component
         Flip4Mac WMV Advanced.component
         Flip4Mac WMV Export.component
         Flip4Mac WMV Import.component
    In your Home/Library/QuickTime/
AC3MovieImport.component (you may or may not want this component, in some instances it causes conflicts. In my system, it doesn't. Who knows why? I don't.)
         Perian.component
For AC3 sound that is in most .mkv files, you need the A52Codec.component, this is the one you want, here: https://code.google.com/p/subler/downloads/detail?name=A52Codec.component.zip - unzip the file and put the component into the System/Library/Audio/Plug-ins/Components
Go back to your Perian settings and in the Audio Output button, set it to 'Multi Channel Sound' - Ignore the message Perian puts up and select it.
By doing a 'Get Info' on your files and where it says 'Open With' - default them to the QuickTime 7 program. Perian no longer will work with QuickTime Player so you must have QT 7.6.6 and set it so it is the default for all the filetypes you use.
It works perfectly with QT7. So far I've gotten ALL my old videos to play.
.avi, .mov (with the AC3 sound), .wmv, .flv, .mp4 and .m4v. all run fine as do all the older formats.
    Good luck!
    Deb.

Hi, I was importing pictures into iPhoto from my sd card and suddenly iPhoto quit.  Now it just won't open.  When I click on the iphoto icon in the dock, nothing happens!  Does anyone have a solution to this problem please?

As a test launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and create a new, test library.  Import some photos and test to see if the same problem persists. Does it?
If it does then your current library has been damaged and should be repaired: apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Since only one option can be run at a time start
with Option #4 and then #1 as needed.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 - click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option.
4 - In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments.  However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

  • Quicktime Pro won't save mp4 as mov

I've got several .mp4 files (created by myself with Sony Vegas using h.264 codec) that I'm trying to convert to faststart .mov files for Internet playback. I just picked up QT Pro and as I understand it I should be able to open the file and simply Save As a mov file to get a new non-rerendered h.264 encoded .mov). When I attempt save as, new files never get created. My save window goes away. When I close QT it asks me to save my changes again, still without saving the file.
I also attempted to export from QT Pro using same h.264 (same codec as mp4 was created with). The file that is created is large (obviously re-encoded, something I DON'T want) and I don't see video, just hear audio.
The original files play fine in QT 7.
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks, Kurtmo

Does the vegas create proper .mp4 files or are these
in an .AVI wrapper? Just trying to determine why a
    simple "Save As..." wouldn't work.
The file is a regular .mp4 file created using Sony Vegas. The file plays fine in QT 7 players. I put some screen shots of my test mp4 with movie info and the encoding options for export. As you can see, I don't get a "passthru" option, so I don't get to far with the work around.
Here are the two screen shots:
    http://jewellhome.net/MovieSettings.jpg
    http://jewellhome.net/ExportSettings.jpg
Another thing you can try is to do an export BUT set
the compression settings for the audio and the video
to "Passthru". This will just take what you've got
and wrap it in QuickTime's .mp4 format, then a "Save
As..." to a movie should work.
The other thing I've noticed, I don't see anything in the preview window when I try to select different settings for the export. As I mentioned earlier, exported files end up with a white screen in place of video (and a large file size, go figure).
    Any other thoughts?

  • Quicktime 10 won't play FCE exported .mov files?

I have edited several videos using Final Cut Express and exported them as .mov files to my desktop. Now, because I have a small internal hard drive (128GB SSD), I copy all of my raw footage to an external hard drive and then delete the files from my Mac HD. But, I keep the finished videos on my desktop. When I try to play the video while the hard drive is plugged in, QuickTime opens and plays the video just fine. But, when the external hard drive is NOT connected and I try to play the video (from my Mac HD), QuickTime won't open it nor play it. If I absolutely have to, I will carry the external HD around with me so I can play my videos, but I was just wondering if it had to do with the codec (H.264) my OS (10.6.8) QuickTime X or FCE (4.1). Can anybody help me?

    Can anybody help me?
At this point one can only make guesses as to a solution since you have not really provided any useful information.
I have edited several videos using Final Cut Express and exported them as .mov files to my desktop.
For future reference, an MOV file is any compressed data in an MOV file container. Data can be any compression format compatible with the system configuration on which the file was made—to include both Apple QT native compatible codecs and "Pro" app installed codecs to third party codecs like WMV, DivX, XviD, MPEG-2, etc. In order to eliminate codec problems, in the future please indicate the specific codecs involved.
This would normally be the playback description of a "QT Reference" file. Basically, a reference file is a very small/quickly created file that tells the player to play data that is actually contained in one or more other files. However, since the reference file cannot be played if the main data file(s) are not accessible (i.e., when the external drive is disconnected), you should also be getting an error message telling you it cannot find referenced data and you have yet to confirm this here.
If I absolutely have to, I will carry the external HD around with me so I can play my videos, but I was just wondering if it had to do with the codec (H.264) my OS (10.6.8) QuickTime X or FCE (4.1).
Once again, since we don't know what form of compression was used or what settings were used, it is impossible to determine if there are any secondary problems to be delt with here. In most cases, a high date rate/low compression format is used for import/editing purposes and the final file is "exported" to a specific compression format depending on its specific target use. In most cases, H.264/AAC is the best compression format for "distibution" since it has a very wide range of settings which allow you to adjust the file size and quality aspects to suit any specific device or target use and to do so as a "standalone" (re-compressed) files which are independent of any data in source/other files.

  • QuickTime Pro won't let me save a file from a website

I have QuickTime Pro 7.0 Normally I can right click a link in Mail and select, "Download linked file" and it will allow me to save an MP3. Not this time. Other times, once actually on a website, I can click on the button on the web based version of QuickTime and save a local copy. However, I can't do that on this website:
    http://survive2thrive.gsradio.net:8080/120309.mp3
    Does anyone know why?
    Thanks!

    Copy the URL.
In Safari open the download window (Cmd-Opt-L)
    Paste.
    OR
Paste the URL in the Addressfield
Option-Return and the file will download.

  • Cannot open my old mov. files with new imovies 10.0.3

I went to open a .mov file I wanted to re-edit and only Quicktime was given as an option.  I've tried to create a new event with the new imovies and that isn't happening either.  How to do either of these simple things would be appreciated.

The new iMovie is only going to accept certain formats and codecs. You should re-export or re-save  your movie files from QuickTime to a new format. You may notice a "(converted)" in the title bar of some of your movies as they are opened in QT. QT is now converting movies into more "acceptable" codecs as it loads them into memory.
After export, they should be acceptable in iMovie.

  • Can you open an existing illustrator file with the application default settings?

I need to open a customers illustrator files that he sends me with the default application settings, not the setting he saved with his file.

    CS6 (Mac) but soon CC.
What is happening is they are saving the files with among other things, print scaling set to something other than 100%. If one of our operators does not catch it, the plate files are ripped at a smaller size than what they should be.
This customer does thier own production work and sends us "plate ready" files but sometimes forgets to change this setting back to 100% (he changes the scaling to something that will fit on a letter size page so he can check his separations).
I seem to recall (from years ago), there was a way to open a file using the applications default settings, not the settings saved within the file itself.
