Quicktime problem now fixed for me....

Hi everyone,
like a lot of people here I was having a very frustrating time with Quicktime since the upgrade and also with firefox as well as safari.
I'd been following most peoples' suggestions as to how to go about fixing it with no joy, but I had another bash on Saturday with one minor difference and it's been fine since then.
I went into Users / Library / Prefs and removed the relevant .plist as before.
I then went into System Preferences ->Quicktime -> Advanced -> MIME Settings -> MIscellaneous & unchecked Flash Media and hit OK.
But back at the main QT Preferences page, *I this time also unchecked "Enable Flash."*.
Did a repair permissions and restarted my browsers and they have both been working fine since then.
As I say, have been following the general suggestions here, just this time also unchecked +Enable Flash+.
Hope this helps...

That took 7 months to sort out? Jesus!

  • Ipod update freeze, firewire problem, possible fix for many.

    Hello all,
I've been having a problem with my ipod 3rd gen updating in much the same way as many in this forum have throughout a number of topic threads.
    PROBLEM:
During song/playlist/content (not software update or restore) updating function one of two things would happen:
    - update would freeze at some point of the transfer (5, 74, 687 songs in to the update) and I would have to force quite itunes and, not being able to dismount the ipod through recommended procedure, I would physically dismount the ipod and receive a scolding for improper dismounting of device.
    - system would crash at some point of the transfer yielding the shaded screen and a prompt to restart the computer by depressing the front panel button for two seconds.
In each of the above cases, no matter how many songs that itunes thought it had transferred, I would only have about a dozen songs on the ipod itself, perhaps indicating a bottleneck on the G4 end of the transfer.
DEADENDS FOR ME THAT MAY STILL SOLVE PROBLEM FOR SOME:
    - swaping out cables
    - ipod software restore or restore to earlier version
    SOLUTION:
After contacting Apple support, I was led to the opinion that the problem was with the firewire port itself. This was confirmed by attaching my ipod with my cable to a roomates G5 resulting in a faultless transfer of his song library. I was ready to go out and purchase a new firewire PCI card but decided to research firewire problems in the G4 folder of Discussions. This is where I found the fix to my problem (see links at bottom of document). It would seem that Mac ports, both firewire and USB, have a tendency to bog down after awhile and need to be reset. This can be a addressed by one of three possible solutions. The first and easiest was the solution that worked for me (for other solutions please follow links at bottom of page):
    - powered down and disconnected all firewire and USB cables from the G4
    - disconnected power cable from G4 (for laptops I would guess that the battery would need to be removed, not sure if that causes any other problems though, please research)and let sit for about 30 minutes.
    - reconnected all cables and restarted computer. Ports should be reset at that point
    - I took the added measure to restart my computer once with nothing attached to USB and firewire ports and then powering down with front panel button before connecting cables and proceding with final restart.
    RESULT:
Faultless transfer of 37.6 gigs of content in less that 45 minutes.

    This worked perfectly for me!!!
    SOMEBODY PLEASE TAG THIS POST!!!
i have had the problem that everyone has posted about (i.e. - updated iTunes/iPod software and had the update/freeze problem, tried all solutions, to no avail, and was pretty much screwed.)
JUST DO EXACTLY WHAT HE SAYS TO DO (powermac g5, by the way):
    1) power down the computer
    2) unplug EVERYTHING (usb, firewire, power, monitor, etc.)
    3) leave unplugged for 30 minutes
    4) plug power back in
    5) power up from main power button
    6) wait for computer to start back up, then shut down from power button
    7) plug everything back in and power up
    8) restart once more for good measure
    9) update your ipod
    10) take a sigh of relief!
you are seriously a godsend...only one thing...I BOUGHT A NEW ONE ALREADY!!! i literally bought it the day that you posted this solution. After a month and a half of trying to fix this problem, i finally gave up and bought a 20GB iPod Photo with applecare...cost me about $380.
no matter, i think i'm gonna sell my "older" ipod to my mom or dad. they'll use it doing whatever they do. plus, that way, if there's any problem, i can fix it for them without feeling bad about screwing over some stranger.
thanks again, this solution worked perfectly.

  • Mavericks problems now SOP for Apple upgrades?

Up until a year or so ago I have always found Apple upgrades to be relatively straightforward. Maybe a few peculiar issues related to the particular setup of my Mac - sometimes the laptops would have an issue sometimes my iMac - but in general a few minutes tweaking would sort it out.
However Mavericks seems to continue a trend started by iOS 6 and strongly continued by iOS 7, that upgrades that cause so many problems that they are unworkable. I am beginning to think this malaise has become the new norm for Apple. My iPhones have become subject to frequent BSOD and now Mavericks is one of the worst "upgrades" I have ever seen. My Smart Mailboxes are a complete mess. My general mailbox is not as I would wish to see it and in particular my Gmail accounts are trashed. How did this get out of Cupertino? Did anyone bother testing with anything that might be used in the real world, like Gmail?
I've rolled back to Mountain Lion and will await a proper release of Mavericks.
But be warned Apple - I (and I reckon many more  former Apple fans too) am not prepared to put up with the shoddy upgrades much longer. My friends/colleagues tell me how wonderful MSFT has become and how the lessons of the Windows era have been learnt - not sure I quite believe it, but it does seem Apple is intent on following a similar catastrophic learning path when it comes to upgrades.

I'm happy for you Barney but certainly from my perspective I do not agree that the past year's upgrades have been "nothing different". A short overview of this community will show that there are major issues for many people.
When you move from being a computer user's platform of choice to mass market (as Apple has clearly done) there is a lot more care required with upgrades.
I do not want a platform which needs tweaking after every upgrade - especially if all my applications are downloaded from the Apple App Store. I have an expectation that Apple has ensured these apps are compatible across upgrades or I am notified that they are not.
If you want to sell a premium product then it needs premium upgrades not poorly validated ones.
Smart Mailbox is a premium OSX feature and it is not working at all after this upgrade. I can see all the messages sitting on the servers but Mail refuses to list them in the SM. That is not a Gmail issue it is an Apple Mail issue and a pretty simple issue to check. And yes of course I've carried out all the rebuilds to try to recover the SMs but no avail. I'm nor trying Mavericks on a backup machine to see if it works any better with that but my working machines are staying on Mountain Lion for now.
You are fortunate your iOS devices work, certainly out of the 4 iPhones (2 5s and 2 4s) and 2 iPads I have here, the 4's and iPads work fine but the 5s are BSODed. Same app suites on the iPhones so that strikes me as a compatability issue.
Anyway my point remains valid - for 6 years since I changed all my laptops and desktops to Apple I have had no issues with any upgrade. Now in the past year I have issues with iOS and now with OSX.
    There is a problem

  • Is the slow sync to iTunes problem now fixed (iTunes 9.2.x and iOS4x)?

Several people have commented running into a problem where they found syncing their iPhone to iTunes took a very, very long time (i.e. HOURS). This happened to me as well, and thankfully I found a solution online, though painful, which did fix the problem. Essentially, one had to delete all of the 3rd-party apps off their iPhone (thus losing all data associated with those apps), do a sync, and then add them back. Some people reported the need to add the apps back one at a time, where others indicated success adding them all back at once, but still they had to add the apps -- not merely do a restore -- else the problem would return. Of course, this also meant, depending on the app, having to manually re-add all the data where possible (i.e. you lose all your high games scores, etc.). This cured the problem for me. Some people speculated that this problem is created when one purchases some apps on their computer using iTunes (then syncs them to the iPhone) AND purchases other apps directly via their iPhone. I believe I also saw someone wonder if the problem arose when one purchases apps on the computer using iTunes, but then updates them to the latest versions directly on the iPhone. Regardless, does anyone have any update on this problem? Has it "gone away" entirely with the latest iTunes and iOS? Sometimes I'm away from my computer and I see an app I'd like to buy directly from my iPhone (or update an existing one), but I'm too paranoid to do so for fear of incurring that nasty problem again.

What does " therefore theresnow way my computer regonizes" mean?
I suspect that your iPod finally died and needs replacement. The battery is dead, screen cracked and Home button broken,
Apple will exchange your iPod for a refurbished 4G with same capacity for $199 for 64 GB one and $99 for the other 4Gs. They do not fix yours.

  • Problem instaling fix for Microsoft teredo tunneling adapter

In Devices and Printers, the desktop icon shows an exclamation point.  I ran troubleshooting and was informed that I need Microsoft teredo tunneling adapter.  I have no idea what that is.  The Troubleshooter tried to install it but was unsuccessful.
As far as I can tell, my computer operates OK, although I have had some issues with using Skype.
I read that the Zone Alarm firewall may interfere with the installation or operation of the teredo adapter.  I no longer have Zone Alarm.

    1. You would do better to describe your system in a bit more detailed. What you are trying to achieve. The missing teredo is only a consequece of something that we, readers , do not know.
    2. For Zone Alarm you are advice to place an question in Zone Alarm forum and/or support
    http://www.zonealarm.com/security/en-us/company/community.htm
I would try to do all you need in test environment with firewall disabled.

  • I accidentally deleted QuickTime from my computer. Then I did a system restore and retrieved it. Now Itunes can't find QuickTime and will not open. Is there a fix for this without my Ipod?

I accidently deleted QuickTime from my computer. Then I did a system restore and retrieved the program. Now Itunes can't find QuickTime and will not open.Is there a eazy fix for this without using my Ipod? Ihave 6K songs in Itunes that I can't get to.
    Thank You
    T-BILL

Hmmm. There's a couple of things that might be going on with that one.
Let's try an uninstall and reinstall of QuickTime first.
If you're using XP, head into your Add or Remove Programs control panel. Select "QuickTime", click "Change" and then click "Remove".
If you're using & or Vista, head into your Uninstall a program control panel, select QuickTime, and then click "Uninstall".
You can get QuickTime back either via Apple Software Update (in your Start menu go "All Programs > Apple Software Update" ... QuickTime should appear in the "New Programs" section), or by downloading a QuickTimeInstaller.exe from the following location:

Pearson put out a tech note on this today - the new versions of Java are what's causing the problem. If you can use Time Machine to rollback java prior to a java 7 or 1.6.0_37 version that will get you going again. I've been searching for hours for a place to download the older version but it seems Apple's site and Oracle all only have the latest release. Still trying to see if I have a copy downloaded on a system that hasn;t been updated to copy off to a network drive or usb and install the older version on to systems.

Teachers using PowerTeacher Gradebook should avoid taking this Java update to version 1.6.0_37 until notified that PowerTeacher Gradebook has been certified with this latest version of Java 1.6 for Mac OS X. PowerTeacher Gradebook will continue to work on Mac OS X workstations with Java version 1.6.0_35.

    TomCT60,
Is your MacBook using Mac OS X 10.6.8 as indicated in your post? If so you will not be able to fully integrate with iCloud.

If you are using Lion, go to iCal>Preferences...>Accounts, and delete/re-add your iCloud CalDAV server.

  • Possible fix for embed tag problems in Safari 5.1 - Quicktime 7.6.6

I would be grateful if anyone can confirm the following problem and fix:
A user of my website reported that embedded audio (mp3) files ceased playing after installing Safari 5.1 on OS X 10.6.8. I updated my test machine's Safari from 5.0 to 5.1 and confirmed the issue. Some audio would play, some wouldn't. Wierder, a random selection of Javascript-triggered embedded audio would report, "Error calling method on NPObject".
I had a very similar issue with 64-bit Mac Firefox 5 and Quicktime Plug-in 7.6.6. In the case of Firefox 5, the fix was to open Get Info... on Firefox and select 32-bit mode (this also stopped an annoying Quicktime dialog).
The Safari problem with embedded mp3's didn't occur under a fresh user account, so I came up with a possible fix:
In Safari, choose "Empty Cache...", followed by "Reset Safari", checking only "Remove all website data" (if you don't want to lose your auto-fill, passwords and history).
My system seems to have recovered its senses... I'm just wondering if the fix above was what did the trick.
    Cheers,
    Chris

I followed these steps and it did not fix my problem.  I still click on an mp3 link and it downloads, rather than opening in the browser.
It gives me the option of choosing, and works both ways (download/open) in Firefox.
    sample link:  AccNoir+Fest+2011+PRA+mp3.mp3
Curiously, if I click "Open With" on the dowloaded file and tell it to open in Safari, it opens fine like I want.  So it's not that Safari can't, it just isn't being told properly.

  • The fix for "iTunes has encountered a problem and needs to close . . ."

I recently purchased a new laptop and tried to get my library transferred. iTunes wouldn’t open; QuickTime wouldn’t open. I was near a heart attack. I tried the fixes listed in the forum, but they didn’t work. Then I discovered:
The fix needs to be done in a proper order!
    a. Delete iTunes and QuickTime from Add/Remove programs
    b. Go to C > Program files an delete the folders for iTunes and QuickTime. If QT will not allow you to delete the program because it’s “in use”, then go to Start > Run > configsys > Startup and deselect “qttask”. You will have to reboot and get past the selective start up/diagnostic screen. Then go back to C > Program files and you will now be able to delete the QuickTime folder.
    c. For good order’s sake, delete any desktop shortcuts and empty your Recycle Bin.
    d. Reboot
    e. Download the STAND ALONE version of QuickTime: http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/standalone.html
    f. Install the stand alone version; reboot
    g. Download the QuickTime 7 with iTunes 6: http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/win.html
    h. Install the iTunes program. The stand alone will take precedence over the imbedded version of QuickTime.
    i. Reboot
When your system has completed the reboot, you should be able to double-click the newly installed desktop shortcut; give it a few minutes and it should open. Mine did – and I tried everything else. If this does NOT work, then there is a conflict with something else in your system and you will have to go through the configsys elimination process, which is a whole lot more work.
    Best of luck!
    Gateway laptop Windows XP

The first thing to check is Quicktime as iTunes will not work without it.
Does Quickime launch OK and work normally?
If it does use the method in this article to troubleshoot iTunes:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1421
If QUicktime does not launch, describe what happens with any error message in full.
Have you installed any of the following:
ACE & K-Lite mega codecs package, QT alternative, Storm codec, WinAVI video converter, Mpcstar, (possibly starcodec pack, 3ivx)
If so uninstall them, they are know to cause problems with QUickitme.
Then download the version of Quickime without iTunes (it is not the default option):
    http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/win.html
Now Remove Quicktime using the method for Quicktime in this article (just Quicktime):
    XP
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1925
    Vista
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1923
When you come to your C:\Windows\system32\ folder you can delete any file or folder with Quicktime in the name.
    Restart you computer
Install the stand alone Quicktime and check if it starts.
If it does you are in a position to find out if iTunes is OK.

  • CS4 while Adobe fix the problems with CS5 for Mac?

If anyone from Adobe is monitoring this forum, is it possible for customers who have bought PRemiere Pro CS5 to have access to a fully functional copy of Premiere Pro CS4 while we wait for fixes to two serious bugs in the Mac release of CS5?
The problems with not being able to save project files, and the wrong aspect ratio randomly being selected when importing widescreen DV footage - discussed in threads on this forum - make CS5 unusable on a Mac currently.
    thanks.

You randomly get a saved Quicktime file with the wrong aspect ratio.
Ah ha...now that I can fix for you ..if you have QT Pro.
BTW: That behavoiur is typical of QT Player and is not actually random.
    Method:
Open your mov in QT Pro
    Show Movie Properties  (Ctrl-J)
    Click on Video Track
    Click on Visual Settings Tab
Un check the Preserve Aspect Ratio box
(Here is where you now need to do some math to change the 4x3 to 16:9 ratio)
Divide the Vertical Pixel Dimension  by 1.78 and enter the result in the Vert Dimension box
Ensure the Preserve Aspect Ratio box is UNCHECKED
Hit Tab key and notice the image in the QT window change.
In the QT Window Menu - File>Save  (SAVE is an  IMPORTANT STEP)
    Here is an example:
    QT movie Original is 320x240
    Divide 240 by1.78    ( ie. 240/1.78=134)
    Bingo!

  • HT201401 Is there a fix for the will not turn on problem?

My iPhone 5 did not wake me up this morning and it would not turn on.  I was reading the news on it before retiring to bed, I plugged in the charger and left it on the night stand.  This moring it would not turn on with either the home button or the power button.  Holding the power button down for many seconds did nothing.  I put it on a different charger for 30 min or so, thinking the charger may have failed the the battery ran out, no go.  By going through the trouble shooting procedures on Apple Support I learned there is a reset procedure by pressing and holding the power and home buttons at the same time.  I tried this and it booted up and appears to be OK.  The battery was at 99% so it did take a charge while in the off state.  Is this a common problem and is Apple working on a fix?  This is my first iPhone and it's not making me feel good about the product now.
