QuickTime Reference Movies of Fully-Rendered Timeline Taking Forever

Sometimes when I attempt to export a fully-rendered timeline as a reference QuickTime (NOT self-contained), the "Writing Audio and Video" bar takes over an hour (for an 8-minute project) and results in files sizes of many GBs. Has anyone else experienced this?

If your Sequence isn't fully rendered before you export, the reference movie will have to perform the render ... taking extra time and it includes those renders as part of the reference file (hence the larger than expected file size).
To avoid this, make sure the Sequence is fully rendered PRIOR to exporting.

Aspect ratio, quicktime reference movie

Hi, I'm trying to compress my movie edited in 1080i HDV to the h.264 Sequence iPod video 640x480.
I've done this many many times exporting directly from FCP to compressor and it usually works.. But I have read (here and other places) that it is better to
1. make a quicktime reference movie
2. open that in compressor..
3. render (compress) into the correct format
When I do that it messes up the aspect ratio (making it even wider) any suggestions?

When converting like you did in the past, (where it changed the aspect of your image) did you go into the geometry controls of compressor and also select the proper aspect, found in the Frame Size controls.
If you fail to do this, you would end up with the wrong aspect being applied. You may also have to pad your video, using the "Output Image Inset (Padding) controls as well to maintain your 16x9 aspect on a 4x3 aspect.

Quicktime reference movies?

has FCP stopped making QT ref movies??? I am running FCP 6.0.3 and there is no tab in there to make a reference movie. Does this mean I need to stop working in FCP while compressor does it's thing now?

Export/QuickTime/Current Settings/Audio and Video/No Recompression
Then uncheck "make self contained."

*** Rendering is taking forever

I am editing a 720x480 DV anamorphic project on a DP 2.7 and the render times are taking forever for a render to rather simple video (i.e. not many layers). I'm getting an orange bar whenever I need to render. In the past it was green and went much faster.
I must have changed the preferences. Is there anything I can do to get rid of the orange bar and have the green bar mode available to render?

It wouldn't make any difference... if you set your playback to "safe" or Unlimted mode in the RT pop up menu in the Timeline window you can change the 'render status" colors, but the time it takes to actually render will be the same as long as the render quality settings are the same.
FWIW, some effects take longer to render than others for sure...

HDV QT Reference Movie Exported from FCP5 Freezes

I'm having a problem when I export HDV to a Quicktime Reference Movie. The video plays back to a specific point, then freezes, while the audio keeps playing.
This happens even with cuts-only (or even uncut footage), no effects movies when they are exported as QT Reference Movies.
Can anyone give me some advice?

STUDIO X: I tried rendering the QT Reference Movie to the same disk as the media, but I still get the same video freeze with audio that works just fine. The video freezes 21-minutes into the 42-minute video.
FINAL CUT PRO: Thank you for your suggestion, but QT Reference Movies were designed to accomplish specific function. I use them to burn DVD's, create videos for the internet and mobile phones... lots of things. Your suggestion is simply circumventing a function that SHOULD work. Your suggestion also takes much more time and disk space. You're taking something that should be simple and making it complicated. Unless I have to move a copy of my HDV movie to another computer outside of my studio, this is unacceptable.

How to create Flash reference movie?

Hi, is there a tool(s) for generating a flash video reference
movie? I'm looking for something similar to the quicktime reference

What exactly are you trying to do?
I don't think you are going to be able to create your own Flash objects. Maybe you can export the data and manipulate it externally.

Encore DVD 2.0 Quicktime Reference Import

I seem to have an issue when trying to import an Avid Quicktime reference movie. In Version 1.5 a QT reference imported without issue, but importing in 2.0 gives the error message "Quicktime and/or the appropriate codec do not appear to be installed." A regular (non-reference) QT imports fine into 2.0. Anyone have any ideas on this?

I did some experimenting and it looks like it doesn't like the .qt extension that the Avid system gives the file. If I change the extension to .mov it imports and encodes just fine. Is there some way to avoid having to rename the extension each time? Any kind of setting in Encore perhaps?

Conforming reference movies

This might be a dumb question, but there is a lot at stake so im asking anyway!
if you conform a Quicktime reference movie. Does it conform the media that the reference movie points to, or just how that actual reference movie plays?

Quicktime reference

Greetings all,
Apologies if this is an overasked question - but I have found no reference to it when searching.
If I export a 2 hr quicktime reference movie from Avid and then make a dvdsp project - will dvdsp automatically compress the qucktime to whatever quality it needs to fit it on a DVD ?
Be great if it did or do I have to work it out in advance ?
I know lots of stuff but I don't know this,

Your best bet is to make a self contained movie and encode outside of DVD SP, depending on the settings the movie may or may not fit and it will also have uncompressed audio, better to use AC3
To use Compressor to m2v and AC3- http://dvdstepbystep.com/fasttrackover.php gives the process (download the movie if you wish, Compressor sections starts at about the minute mark)

Quicktime export still uses reference movie!

I am trying to export a file to deliver to a client. It plays in QT player 7 fine--so I go to Export... and choose my settings, then click OK. Then I burn the resulting file to a DVD.
When I try to play this file on another computer, I get an error saying an audio.aif cannot be found, and without it the movie cannot play properly. This is the same kind of warning you get when you save a reference movie and delete the original file. But I didn't do that...I exported and waited as it recopied every frame!
What's going on?

Same problems here and have spent days on every variable option. Thank you though for the tip of Snapz Pro. I'm downloading a trial now to see if that works but I'm concerned about the quality of the final file. I'm actually thinking of finding a way to export the Keynote into a video editing program and bring the AAC or .Mov files in separately and re-size them on top of the Keynote Quicktime to re-edit the timings. Anyone tried that yet?

Automator workflow for Quicktime "Save As... reference movie"

I need just to "Save As (a reference movie)" from within Quicktime... I have tried using the "Compress using most recent settings" but that still tries to make it "self-contained," whereas i need specifically to Save As a Reference Movie.
Any thoughts?

If you save as a reference movie it just uses a pointer to the already existing content which you cannot move or molest, or it won't work. You want to compress it then you make a new movie, and self contained as a result.

i am fairly new to applescript and hoping i am missing something obvious.
i am trying to save movies as reference movies via applescript. I found following command in the quicktime dictionary :
save reference movie v : Save a movie that references multiple versions of another movie to a file

to file : the destination file
using descriptors any : a list of records that can contain movieURL, dataRate, and platform, where platform can be desktop or iPhone
[replacing boolean] : should the original file be deleted first?
when i do the following:
save reference movie to moviepath using descriptors {} replacing 0
i get a reference file without any data in it - fine so far. Upon adding a record of descriptors
set movie_desc to {movieURL:"file://<path-to-movie>", dataRate:"1500", platform:"desktop"}
save reference movie to ml_mov using descriptors movie_desc replacing 0
i get a parameter error. What is the correct use of this command?

When you converted the original files via MPEG Streamclip, what did you convert them to?
Have you tried trashing your preferences in FCP? Trashing FCP prefs is usually the first step when FCP is performing strangely.

Export Reference Movie takes forever!

XDCAM EX project that is only 17 minutes long is taking 3 hrs to export a reference movie. Why? I've rendered everything in the sequence but it still seems like it needs to re-render everything in order to export a simple reference movie and sometimes it crashes during export and I get nothing after waiting for three hrs...

You can't export a "reference" movie in a different codec Eli, that will trigger a full re-render to a self contained movie. As Tom has pointed out the renders in your "rendered" timeline previously only contained that footage which FCP needed to render for full quality playback, but due to the nature of XDCAM HD/EX's MPEG2 codec, even that footage which can be played back without render needs to be rendered for export, even as a reference movie. The only way round this is to set your Sequence menu > Render options to also render "Full". Then, if and when your sequence is fully rendered, the reference movie export will be fast.

Help with QT Reference Movie

Because I moved from using Sony Vegas to FCP, I didn't keep the SD card structure intact. I only kept the .mts files. Because of this, I used ClipWrap to convert to Apple ProRes 422 LT. I imported this footage into FCP and put it on the timeline and used PluralEyes to sync. I wanted to create a QT Reference Movie of V1, but for some reason, FCP wants to render out the entire track completely (over 46 gb) instead of just making a reference movie. Why is this? Here's a screen shot of what I'm doing:

But does that match your Sequence settings in FCP? Frame rate? Pixel dimensions? If any settings don't match, or when you've applied effects to the clips in the Timeline, FCP will render the Sequence and those renders will become part of the Reference movie.
Render the Sequence fully before you export and the resulting reference file will be much smaller in size.
