    Codec : icod
I generally defer to folks like QuickTimeKirk on these sorts of matters, but I think that's the source of the problem. That's the Apple Intermediate Codec, an editing codec used on Macs:

... and it won't display on a PC:

Can the provider of the file re-export it using a different video codec for you?

  • Greyed-out movie file not syncing

I imported a short MP4 video file into iTunes 10 for Windows. (An old educational short from RiffTrax if you're interested) It appears in iTunes okay and plays fine, but when I attempt to sync my iPhone 4, the title for that video file is greyed out on the Movies page. I have iTunes set to sync unwatched movie files, and this method has always worked for me before: download the file, move it to my movies folder, drag it into iTunes, edit the tags, and sync the device. Any ideas?

The movie files are syncing again. It must've been something with the one that started it.

  • Combine .mov files audio lost

When trying to combine .mov files from Nikon D7000 using QT Pro the audio is lost on the file that is pasted in. I have followed the instruct on page 31 of the manual that are very simple of selecting all in one file and edit-copy then open the next file and edit-paste to the beginning. When you play it back the audio from the pasted file is lost. Is the way the product actually works or is the some simple I have missed?

Does anyone know if this the expected behavior of Quicktime Pro when combining .mov files that the audio from the one being added to the other is lost?

  • Imovie wont import an mp4 movie file

Can't figure out why my imovie won't import an mp4 movie file. It's done it before. The font for the file I want to import appears in faded letters and won't highlight to be selected. ????? Any suggestions?

    .mp4 is just a media-container, or wrapper.
it doesn't tell us nor iMovie what's inside.
open the .mp4 with the Quicktime Player, hit ctrl-i .. tell us about 'Codec'

  • My mp4 movie files used to transfer from computer to iPad but now they will not Tried dragging and dropping to iTunes library but won't work anymore Plse help

I have mp4 movie files that i am trying to transfer to my ipad and it will no longer work.  They will not copy to my iTunes library. I used to be able to transfer/drag and drop converted movies to my iTunes are the mp4 files maybe too big Although I have plenty of space

    Howdy Anastasia,
I was thinking about why the songs arent importing and I feel that its either, A) the format of the files has changed since you last imported them, or B) you may need to rebuild the iTunes library.
Here is an article about doing just that:
iTunes: How to re-create your iTunes library and playlists
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1451
    Re-creating the iTunes Library file
Note: After re-creating your library, any devices that you sync with iTunes (Apple TV, iPod, iPhone, iPad) will see your iTunes library as a new library and will completely resync. The next sync with such a device will take longer and may reset some options since your rebuilt library isn't familiar to the device.
    1. Quit iTunes.
    2. Locate your iTunes folder (this is the folder that contains the iTunes Library and iTunes Library.xml files).
    Operating System
    Default location of iTunes Folder
    Mac OS X
    /Users/[your username]/Music
    Microsoft Windows XP
    \Documents and Settings\[your username]\My Documents\My Music\
    Microsoft Windows Vista
    \Users\[your username]\Music\
    Microsoft Windows 7
    \Users\[your username]\My Music\
    3. Open your iTunes folder.
    4. Drag the "iTunes Library.xml" or "iTunes Music Library.xml" file to the Desktop. If neither is available, learn how to add files back to the Library (because the XML file is not available, playlists and other information will not be available).
    5. Drag the following file from your iTunes folder to the Trash:
    Mac OS X
    "iTunes Library" or "iTunes Library.itl"
    Microsoft Windows
    "iTunes Library.itl"
    6. Open iTunes.
Important: Do not add any content into iTunes at this point (such as by purchasing something from the iTunes Store).
    7. Choose File > Library > Import Playlist.
    8. Navigate to the "iTunes Library.xml" file on the Desktop.
    Mac users: Click Choose.
    Windows users: Click Open.
If your Podcasts list in iTunes is empty after following these steps, learn how to add them back into iTunes.
    Regards,
    Sterling

Hi...I have the OS X v10.6.8 but my QuickTime is not playing .mov files. How can I fix this?
Depends of the specific kind of file you are trying to play. MOV refers to the file container. Any data compatible with the system used to create the file can be placed in an MOV file. If you don't have the same codecs available on your computer to play back the file or if your version of the QT player does not expect expect the encoded data to be in an MOV file container, then it cannot/will not play the file. Use the Finder Info window, media player Inspector/Information window, or a dedicated utility to determine what compression formats were used to create the MOV file and then install the required codec(s) if available.

  • Adding extra audio tracks to an mp4 movie file?

I'm new to using iMovie or similar programs for converting/merging video and audio, so any help that steers me in the right direction is greatly appreciated.
I made an mp4 file of a movie, and want to add an audio track to the mp4 file. The audio track is an mp3 file. However, in order for me to have the new audio track sync up with the video, I need the audio track to start playing before the movie begins. Please note that I'm not interested in burning this to a DVD; I just want a new mp4 file with the extra audio track.
    With this in mind:
    1) What program would be best for merging an mp3 file with an mp4 video file, plus adding extra time to the video in order to accommodate the extra time in the audio track? I have iMovie HD 6.0.3, and the latest version of Handbrake, unless another program is better for this task.
    2) What steps do I need to perform to merge the two files? I'm having trouble figuring out how to do this in Handbrake, and importing the mp4 file in iMovie will take forever.
As I said, I'm new to using these programs, so if you need me to clarify anything, please ask and I'll do my best to help out. Thanks!

QuickTime Player Pro ($30) can do the job in just a few seconds. Its .mov container can have up to 99 tracks.
Open the .mp4 file, select all and Copy.
Switch to the .mp3 file, move the playhead to the needed start point and paste in the entire .mp4 file.
The hardest part is a pencil and paper to note the time of each file to find the proper insertion point.

  • Export as QuickTime Movie - lose audio sync

I have a 10 minute project that basically is a sequence of 10 nested sequences. It is an HDV project. I need to export it as a QuickTime Movie to maintain the ability to show it in HD. When I do so (using Export->QuickTime Movie - I am not using "Using QuickTime Conversion"), I maintain "Current Settings". The resulting .mov file, when played back in QuickTime Player (or anything else) has a progressively severe loss of audio sync. This is not present when playing the project within the timeline in FCP (6.0.3).
I have tried opening the project on a different computer with a virgin version of FCP 6.0.3, with the same results. I also made sure to render the individual sequences as well as the master sequence. I created a new sequence and added the individual chapters again, with the same result. I tried using the Media Manager to bring the project over to another computer - same problem. I also took this to an Apple One-to-One class with a FCP expert who couldn't figure it out either.
I could really use some help here.

First of all, thank you for responding.
I don't have a capture delay. The audio rate is 48 khz.
Interestingly, I had previously tried the separate export and stitching you suggested, but a strange thing occurred. If the resulting quicktime movie was created through a Save As... command, you wind up with a self-contained movie. When I did that, I started to get weird audio repetitions or dropouts as the movie went on. On the other hand, if I left it a reference movie, this didn't happen.
Anyway, this is a workaround, but it means that the whole thing has to be done over every time I make any change at all, and I am also concerned about getting rid of this problem for the future.
    Any other thoughts?

  • Extract audio from MP4 movie file to iTunes library

I downloaded a 5-minute movie, it's now sitting on my desktop as a mp4 QuickTime file, opens and plays fine. I want to turn the audio soundtrack of the movie (one complete song) into an mp3 in my Music library, so I can just play the song on my iPod without opening the movie file (I have an older iPod 60GB that doesn't play movies). Please advise, thanks

Open the movie in the QuickTime Player and Select Export -> Sound to AIFF.
Drop the exported AIFF file into iTunes.
Make sure the iTunes CD Import Settings in Prefs is set to the MP3 encoder.
Right-Click on the AIFF file in the iTunes Library display and select Create MP3 Version.

  • Quicktime TOAST VIDEO CD export, mpg files, audio sync out

I used the TOAST VIDEO CD option from my FINAL CUT PRO 3.0 version to make mpg videos to upload to my website, so it seems to be the easiest format where a PC platform and MAC platform can both run this file...
well lately, i can't remember what i've changed, if anything, but the files that I export, become out of (audio) sync when they become mpgs. However, I can do mp4 and its fine, or any other format. But when I do video toast cd (.mpg), and I play the file on the laptop, its audio is out of sync. I am running QT 7.0.1 downgraded from 7.0.4, that i was using earlier... with Final Cut Pro 3.0, and running Mac OSX 10.3.9
please someone help me with this, its driving me nutso!
    please

It sounds (no pun intended) like a Toast problem.
QuickTime doesn't export to MPEG-1 or 2 formats and it isn't involved with the conversion. Maybe you can find an answer in a Toast user forum (if any).
I've never had any issues using the steps you use but my conversions were from original QT formats (not .avi) and the files were under 5 minutes.

  • Quicktime Movie File not syncing

Hi have just recently purchased an Apple TV and love the functionality of it, but I cannot seem to sync the movie files from iphoto which were taken from a digital camera. The files are described in itunes as 'Quicktime Movie File' but it seems to only sync MPEG4.
What happened to the slogan - 'if its in itunes, its in Apple TV'?
I have not experienced this yet!
    Help!
    Thanks,
    Jarrod

Yea, that slogan is a little overboard.
You will definitely need to convert anything you want to watch to MPEG4 if it isn't already, and (further) it needs to meet the specifications of what ATV will play (that is to say, ATV won't play any MPEG4 but one that falls within the parameters it can handle. Luckily they are broad and reasonable parameters).
Your best bet is to right click on the movie in iTunes and choose "Convert to Apple TV". That ought to do it.

  • Quicktime won't play .mov files?

I have the latest Quicktime - Quicktime Player 7. I'm trying to open an HD 720p30 .mov file in Quicktime, but the screen comes up white, seconds later turns black and stays that way. I can hear the audio, just can't see anything.
I'm using a PC, but the files came from a MAC. When I exported the files from the MAC I selected the export for MAC & PC Compatibility. What to do?
Could it be the video card? Do I need a diff. video codec besides H.264?
    Please help...

My guess is that you made the file using Final Cut (or have it installed on the Mac). You've got a pretty "raw" file with nearly no compression.
HDV is an editing codec and it isn't available in QuickTime for Windows (or Mac's without FCP).
Use H.264 (and some audio compression, too) to view it on a PC with QuickTime Player.
