Quicktime sluggish

Whenever I watch Apple keynote speeches in standard or HD presentation, it will not play smoothly. It is real pixelated and skips. Is there anything I need to adjust in the settings?

The following only applies to those running Tiger or Leopard:
If you are experiencing trouble viewing QuickTime movies with QuickTime Player or the QuickTime browser-plug-in follow the steps in the link below to ensure that QuickTime is properly installed on your Mac
http://www.apple.com/quicktime/troubleshooting/
If you having problems watching WWDC Keynotes, tutorials or Trailers on the Apple website, check your Quicktime Player 7 settings in System Preferences:
Under Streaming, set for Automatic, enable Instant On and Play Immediately.
Under Advanced, click Mime Settings and ensure that Streaming (both kinds) are enabled.
(Note that if you are running Snow Leopard you should be using Quicktime Player 7 and not Quicktime 10.) Snow Leopard does not have a QuickTime System Preference pane. No MIME Settings options. No streaming settings. If a User has migrated from 10.5.8 then those settings have moved over (but no changes can be made). QuickTime Player 7 is in your Applications/Utilities folder (if you've got it installed). If not you can install it from the Snow Leopard DVD (Optional Installs).

  • Videos play sluggish using iPhoto 11 or quicktime

    Hi Community
When playing imported iPhone 4S movies in iPhoto 11 or Quicktime, they play sluggish.
However, VLC plays them fine. Anybody out there have any thoughts on how I can diagnose this?

No, there is no issue having 11 and 09 on the same machine - just put one into a Folder within the Apps folder. Note that updaters won't find it there.
I have a point of feedback on keeping multiple versions of iPhoto around.
I began processing my multiple Libraries (all in iPhoto8 format) using iPLM. At one point, I used its option to create a new Library and then moved some iP8 photos into it. However, when I tried to open it using iP8 I noticed that it was actually an iP9 Library. I contacted the IPLM author and he gave me this very useful reply. I share it, as other may find this good to know. (I have now 'compressed' my currently-unused copy of iPhoto9 and have not had further difficulties/confusion.)
There isn't really a great way to keep two different versions of iPhoto installed simultaneously. iPLM gets the location of iPhoto itself by querying OS X, which will typically return the highest versioned copy of iPhoto that it finds. If you look in the lower right corner of the main iPLM window, that will show you what version of iPhoto iPLM is using, and clicking the version number will show you the full path to the iPhoto application itself. So when you create new libraries, open libraries, etc., that version is what iPLM will be using.
The technique I typically use to keep multiple versions of iPhoto around (I have every version back to iPhoto 2, since I have to test iPLM with them) is to use the "Compress" command in the Finder to make a .zip version of the iPhoto application, and then delete the application itself. The OS can't use the program while it's zipped up, but then if I want to switch, say, from iPhoto 9 back to iPhoto 8, I just trash iPhoto 9 and unzip a copy of iPhoto 8, so I only ever have one unzipped copy around at a time.

  • Sluggish m4v playback in itunes and quicktime

    hi all
spent a while searching for an answer to this question.
i purchased a tv series through itunes (as m4v files) and downloaded them to my computer. no problems there.
when i went to playback the files i ran into some trouble. there was sluggish video/audio feed when playing the files either through quicktime or itunes. the audio and video were not off "sync" with eachother, its just they played sluggish as a whole.
for example, about three seconds would play, then both audio and video would pause. then, a few more secs would play and so on.
i have tried codecs, but still dont' know, and it is really agrivating. im running a windows xp computer, 1gb ram, 1.7ghz processor, pentium 4. no problems with computer speed in general.
any help would be greatly appreciated.
    thanks
    -matt

The iTunes store writes, "All TV shows and other video content are now available in 640-by-480 resolution." And, QuickTime Tech Specs page, says the following.
For viewing videos purchased from the iTunes Store:
    (Windows)
2.0 GHz Pentium-class processor or better
    512MB of RAM
    32MB video RAM
    QuickTime 7.1.3
    Windows 2000 or XP
For viewing 640x480 standard definition (SD) H.264 video:
    (Windows)
2.0 GHz Intel Pentium class or better processor
    At least 512MB of RAM
    64MB or greater video card
    Windows 2000 or XP
I don't know how much VRAM you have on your terminal, but it looks like you need a faster machine as far as CPU is concerned.
    Good luck

  • Quicktime video sluggish with Logic

I'm using LP 7.2.3 ,and am noticing a significant lag in playback when using it with Quicktime. When I hit play, for example, it may take 2-3 seconds before anything happens.
This seems relatively recent, and I thought connected to my upgrading to QT 7.1.3. But when I downgraded to 7.0.2, the problems persisted. Any thoughts? I've tried both the boot drive and various firewire drives for video playback. All of these drives played back QT movies in the past just fine, and play Pro Tools picture without a hitch.

sorry mate, but can you go through your trouble
    shooting checklist?
the combo you are talking about works everywhere
else....logic 7.2, DAE, QT - all works fine.
does it work normally when you play it back
internally - ie as a window on the monitor?
does it work noramlly when you use built-in audio
    with a fresh autoload?
how much other things do you run from the same drive
    as the video?
do you have other devices on the FW bus the video
converter uses? (don't forget macs only come with 1
    FW bus!)
i agree with you it is likely a QT issue but
downgrading logic will not help. QT and logic are
seperate. try downgrading QT. you can do this by
installing a standalone installer and removing the
receipts script from library->receipts (you may know
this already - you sound like you know what you are
doing but its for anyone else following the thread).
the issues with the latest version of QT seem to be
    intel specific though - you're running a G5 aren't
    you?
It does not work well in any config-on the monitor or through a canopus box to an external monitor. Video in Pro Tools works fine. Logic without video works fine. Video playing off internal ATA or ext firewire both not functioning.
Trying it without DAE is interesting. I will try that, although I wonder what it says if it works?
What version of QT do you use? 7.1.3?

  • Quicktime very sluggish

Quicktime (Pro) loads very slowly, I haven't timed it but I'm guessing it's a little over a minute to load, then when I try to load an image sequence (TGA files) it crashes. For other features like just watching video and exporting video it runs fine once it's loaded.

720x486 (D1 NTSC), 300 frames (10 seconds). I've been doing this in Quicktime for years, it's part of my normal workflow. Just in the past few days has it been acting up. I did two things that might have caused this while trying to solve some other computer problems. 1st, I installed the latest nVidia drivers, 2nd I Removed QTTask from startup using CCleaner. I assumed that did it so I uninstalled and reinstalled Quicktime, problem still existed after a reboot. I also do not see QTTask running in my Task manager.

  • MBP, 15", mid-2010, Yosemite, is sluggish!

    Hello,
I have read the post below this one "MacBook suddenly started running slow" posted by "stephjonas", and have completed the first step given by Linc as follows....  (also, I checked my battery cycle count which is 262 out of a maximum of 1,000)
"First, back up all data immediately, as your boot drive might be failing.
                   Step 1
This diagnostic procedure will query the log for messages that may indicate a system issue. It changes nothing, and therefore will not, in itself,                solve your problem.
If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator. I've tested them only with the Safari web                browser. If you use another browser, they may not work as described.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    syslog -k Sender kernel -k Message CReq 'Channel t|GPU D|I/O|find tok|n Cause: -' | tail | open -ef
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C).
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that                opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V).
The command may take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear.
A TextEdit window will open with the output of the command. Normally the command will produce no output, and the window will be empty. If the                TextEdit window (not the Terminal window) has anything in it, stop here and post it — the text, please, not a screenshot. The title of the TextEdit                window doesn't matter, and you don't need to post that."
I completed this step and the anonymized results are as follows:

WHAT DO I NEED TO DO NEXT?  Thank you all in advance...

"Hacked" is not my terminology, and I don't believe it's intended to be derogatory. What you describe is a perfectly legitimate reason to alter Hosts.
If your Mac still isn't working as expected after uninstalling Intego and Trend Micro, read on. The necessity to have a reliable backup cannot be overstated, since what you describe may be an indication of impending disk failure.
Back up your Mac if you have not already done so. To learn how to to that read Mac Basics: Time Machine backs up your Mac - Apple Support
If your Mac is momentarily unresponsive, consider the following.
Launch the Console app - it is in your Utilities folder. You can find it by selecting Utilities from the Finder's Go menu.
If the log list column on the left is not already displayed, show the log list by selecting Show Log List from Console's View menu. Select Show Toolbar if it is not already shown.
Locate system.log in the list and select it. Many date and time-stamped entries will appear, hundreds of them, and you must find the entries relevant to your Mac's problem.
To do that click the Clear Display button in the Toolbar. All previously displayed log entries will be disappear.
Next: Perform whatever actions cause the Mac to exhibit the slow behavior. If the problem is caused by errors logged by the system, the Console window will show them being recorded in system.log.
One or more of them, along with their time stamps, may reveal the reason for the problem you describe.
Copy and paste those log entries in a reply. If hundreds of the same repetitive messages appear, please edit them before posting. There should be no need for more than a few log entries.
Most of the entries will be cryptic but will contain information you might consider personal such as your Mac's name. If you do not want that information to appear, delete or obscure it when posting your reply. Leave enough information so that the entries can be deciphered.

  • IMac is very slow and sluggish, keeps churning when editing files or on internet

My iMac is running slow and sluggish, it takes several minutes to edit a word document or search the internet ... intermittently it runs great but productivity is near zero when to edit a sentence in a Word document takes several minutes.  When typing an email the cursor stops and if you keep typing it eventually fills in what was typed even though you can't see it when typing. Ran Etrecheck ... report is attached.
    Problem description:
iMac mid 2010 is running very slow … takes too long to edit documents and open internet sites … increased RAM a month ago from 4 to 12 GB

  • IMac running Mavericks 10.9.5; very slow, sluggish, apps freeze, mail is almost useless (gmail imap).  Here are the results from etrecheck:EtreCheck version: 1.9.15 (52) Report generated October 7, 2014 at 1:12:49 PM PDT  Hardwa

My iMac has been sluggish for a long time; finally got around to posting here for help!
I've tried using Onyx to clean it up and it helped a little, but it seems as if everything freezes up and forget about mail; I use apple mail with gmail (google docs) and it is constantly indexing, etc. I need to use the web browser to answer email and it's just not what I want from apple.
    Please help!
    Thanks

  • 1080p videos sluggish on Macbook Pro

    Hi,
If I run a slideshow in iPhoto 9 containing an 1080p MP4 video it is all sluggish and running at very low framerate consuming all CPU power. Running the same video using a double click (will open Quicktime) makes it run absolutely smooth.
Is there a fix for this? Is iPhoto 11 doing any better?
My machine is a 2.26GHz Core 2 Duo with 4 GB of RAM.

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
If I run a slideshow in iPhoto 9 containing an 1080p MP4 video
Are you referring to having this MP4 file in an iPhoto slideshow and running from within iPhoto? If so what theme are you using? How much free space do you have on your boot drive?

  • Why is my DSLR playback so sluggish, even with CUDA?

    Hello,
At work I'm using Premiere cs5.5 on a MAC Pro running osx 10.7.4, it's a 2x2.4 quad core xeon with 12gb of RAM. My primary edit drive is a RAID 0 and I have the NVidia quatro 4000 with CUDA enabled in premiere.
My main question is why my DSLR playback is still incredibly slow when trying to watch footage? I get maybe...4 seconds of smooth playback and then it gets choppy. Even at 1/4 preview quality. It's mostly when watching footage shot with Canon 5D Mark III.
I compared footage shot with my Canon 60D and with my Mark III and the 60D played back without any issue at all, smooth all the way through, with an avg. bit rate of 5.6MB. The Mark III, set on high compression (similar to that of the 60D) avg. bit rate of 3.7MB, gets super choppy within seconds.
Is there a known bug or issue with the Mark III files playing back in premiere? CUDA seems to make no difference in performance for this. It's no better at playing back Mark III footage then when I try on my 3 yr old Dell studio Xps laptop within Premiere 5.5. The laptop I understand, but a fully decked out Mac Pro with CUDA? It seems like something is up.
I don't think it's the video card (but I'm only guessing), as it only seems to happen with Mark III footage. When I playback this footage through quicktime or preview, it plays without issue.
I find in general premiere pro to be sluggish on my mac compared to my win 7 edit machine at home, is there any validation to that?
Thanks for any help you can provide, these forums are very useful.
    James

Hi Jim, that helps with some general info, but it's the fact that it's all Mark III footage specifically that is giving me hassles, and the fact that is plays back without issue in quicktime or preview, makes me believe it's a premiere issue. I'm not running off an external drive or anything either, I've got a RAID 0 that's got some great performance and premiere still bottlenecks.
I've been reading about Open GL 2 (one of the system requirements) issues with this card on a mac, but I'm not really too sure what to make of it, or how to check what my system is running or how to correct any issues.
    Thanks
    James

  • Sending iMovie to Quicktime...a few times

I have been working on several projects in iMovie 5.0.2 varying in length (10 mins, 20mins, 30mins). Plenty of extracted audio and such. I then hit 'share' and send to Quicktime (QT), full quality. Then I will import the QT video back into iMovie to continue editing without iMovie getting sluggish.
Question: is there a loss of quality by sending the same video to QT (always full quality), then importing back into iMovie one, twice, three, times.
I have one movie 'shared' to QT thrice. It looks perfect, but I want to make sure my eyes are not deceiving me.
I feel like I am mixing down music from 10 tracks to one whenever converting to QT. It is so much easier to have the proect in one, long "clip" after importing from QT...
    Thanx!

Seriously?!?! No loss of quality, not even one iota? That is splendid. Absolutely splendid!!
So once iMovie is getting sluggish on me, just covert what I did up to that point to QT, then take the QT video and bring it back into iMovie to pick up where I left off. Wonderful.
    Thanx so much.

  • Final Cut Pro is Sluggish

This is only my second post to forums, so again, forgive me if I break protocol.
I have Final Cut Pro 4.5. For the last three years it has been doing great. No real problems (a couple of the original audio filters crash FCP when I run them) but I've steered clear of them or used them in Soundtrack with no problem.
But that's not why I'm writing. About three weeks ago, I noticed that after about half an hour or so of editing in Final Cut, it would start to get sluggish. Even moving the scrubber would take a few seconds. I have 1G RAM and have had it since I got the computer three years ago. NO problems until just recently. When I restart FCP it runs fine again, until about another half hour in to it.
Let me know if any additional info is needed and I will do my best to supply it.
    Thanks!
    Brett

Thank you. I have tried to repair Permissions in Disk Utlity and did the whole Delete Preferences thing. Found those on the boards here before I posted. Sorry, I should have mentioned that. My bad. I will try the Applecare disks. Didn't know about those.
As for more details, it is FCP 4.5, I just loaded OS 10.4.10 But this strarted BEFORE the install. I bought Tiger because I thought it might help (and I wanted the New iLife). Quicktime version 7.2. I have three hard drives, Two are in the PowerMac Tower itself (came with them 250G each) and I have one External USB drive, but I use this one for archiving only, none of my footage is on it. Uh, let's see. My favortie color is blue, I like long walks in the park and my Apple MOTION doesn't work any more after my install of Tiger, but I already posted about that in the Motion discussion area.
I really can't think of much else. I will try the Applecare and report back what happened.

  • Corrupt songs will play in quicktime - but won't copy to HDD.

    Hi All,
Background/Symptoms: My macbook pro (2008 unibody) crashed a little while ago. It started being really sluggish, so I tried to install an update and during the update I got an error. I turned off the computer and it wouldn't boot past the apple logo. When I started it in Verbose mode I was getting a disk input output error.
    What I've tried:
    1. Took it to the genius bar, after the tests on the HDD he said that it appeared to be fine and to try reinstalling the OS.
    2. I tried booting it up in target disk mode to copy my files over to my imac and was able to get off a good portion of my documents. When I tried to copy over music I would get an error 36 saying that it couldn't be copied, I went through the artists individually and it said this for about 90% of them.
    3. I tried reinstalling snow leopard (that was my current OS) but about 1/4 the way through the install a big exclamation mark appeared and it said the install failed.
    4. After the failure above, I did an archive and install of Leopard (not snow leopard) and was able to get the OS up and running.
    Current Situation:
So with the semi success above, I can view my music in the previous systems folder from the macbook pro's new OS. When I try to add the music to itunes, it says it's corrupt and won't add. I get the same error (36) when I try to copy it from the previous systems folder to an external hard drive or just to the desktop of the macbook pro. Here is the weird thing. When I open the corrupt files in quicktime player, they play! On one of the songs that I'm testing, only the first 3 minutes plays and then it ends, but on most of the others it will play fully. Is there a way to scan for the corrupt songs and only copy over the ones that aren't corrupt?
Thanks in advance, please let me know if there are more details I can provide.
    ~Greg

I have experienced that when there is something a little quirky about the files. Personally, what I would do in your situation is use iTunes to convert the files to AAC using these instructions: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1550 Then see if the AACs transfer to the iPod.

  • Quicktime problems - not playing videos.

Every video file I view on QT looks like this:
    http://usera.imagecave.com/mervingiblet/Slide1.JPG
It happened when I updated it a few weeks ago. Now I cant get rid of the problem. I tried uninstall and reload but to no avail.
The sound plays but no video....
    Any ideas?

What's really puzzling is that while playback of video podcasts is appallingly sluggish within iTunes (v7.3.2.6), if I browse to the relevant .m4v files and play them back in QuickTime or Media Player Classic they are as smooth as silk.
All of which suggests the problem is nothing to do with codecs, or DirectX, or HDD access speeds or any of the other things Apple is bandying about, but is simply due to processor overheads within iTunes itself.
iTunes has always been a bit of a resource hog and the problems that can cause have manifested themselves in various ways over the years, but I'm amazed Apple don't seem to be addressing these issues especially now that it involves visual media that customers have actually paid for. When people start talking of voting with their cash surely something needs to be done?
Even more stunning is the fact that many Mac users seem to be suffering similar -- if not necessarily related -- problems with iTunes. For ages I put the problems with Windows iTunes down to Apple programmers' lack of experience with PC architecture, but these days I'm not too sure.

  • How can I speed up my sluggish MacBook Pro?

I installed Mavericks last year and my MacBook Pro seems to be getting more and more sluggish, especially with the Adobe Creative Suite. Lately InDesign has been crashing on a regular basis. I used to be able to run several programs simultaneously, but now have to be cautious. Any suggestions?
