QuickTime (Snow Leopard 10.6.1) Problem Playing Media

Hi there,
QT X doesn't want to play any media files. If I click on a file on the desktop then it says "QuickTime Player must be installed to run this application". However, if I open QT and then choose the same file it will play it!
Also I see that I no longer have any Preferences in QT Player main drop down menu. Is this normal? I previously had QuickTime Pro installed prior to upgrading to Snow Leopard 10.5.8. Is there perhaps something in the upgrade that was not completed properly?
Advice on how to get QuickTime working properly would be much appreciated. Thank you for any suggestions.
Lynn

Too broad of a brush you paint with and I'm a little confused.
QuickTime (any version) doesn't play WMP (Windows Media Player) formats without the help of http://flip4mac.com. Flip4Mac does have a "beta" version that works (for most) under Snow Leopard.
MPEG-1 files will only open using QuickTime Player 7 (the one in the Utilities folder). MPEG-2 formats will require additional components sold by the Apple Store and I've not tested them with QuickTime X.
QuickTime X requires the "modern" audio and video codecs and you'll be "told" this when you try to open such a file that X can't handle. Click the button option to use QuickTime Player version 7 when that happens.
Use the Finder "Get Info" window to change the default open with app for your WMP files to QuickTime Player (after you've installed the beta software).
QuickTime Player still plays files I made in 1998. Support for Flash tracks was ended in QuickTime Player version 7.3.1 and only older versions can view them. Some of those older versions do not work (as originally designed) in conjunction with Snow Leopard.
Use the Movie Inspector window to tell us more about the files that give you trouble.

You need a "Core 2 Duo" for lion, and I'm guessing you only have a "Core Duo"  My wife's macbook is also a "Core Duo" and has Snow Leapord, but cannot install Lion.....

  • IMac 4,1 with recent upgrade from Tiger to Snow Leopard....problem after problem after problem...PLEASE HELP!

    Hi,
I purchased our iMac 4 with Tiger OS X some time ago (2007) and until recently had absolutely no problems....and then, we met the Snow Leopard. I added the 2GB of memory without a hitch. Backed -up what needed to be backed up to an external hard drive, check. When I tried to install the Snow Leopard disc, it would only install partially or not at all and after almost 16 hours of trying to figure out where I went wrong, I took it to the Apple Store. They said our "antique" slot disc was malfunctioning (only playing CDs because of the different laser calibrations) and they performed a clean installation of Snow Leopard by external USB drive. Ever since we got the computer home it has been a NIGHTMARE! The computer freezes constantly. It runs much slower than before we performed the upgrade (even with an out dated Tiger!!), sometimes it doesn't even boot completely, leaving only the white screen and I'm going crazy! Finally, I get on to Safari without it freezing 15 minutes after loading (angles singing) and tried to purchase a software that will copy my iPod to the new iTunes. An error popped up politely stating that I had made a "BAD REQUEST - Your browser sent a request that this user could not understand. Reason: Your speaking plain HTTP to an SSL-enabled server port. Instead, use the HTTPs scheme to access this URL, please." Since he asked nicely, I clicked on the supporting link for more information. Now there is another error message "Your copy of Safari is missing important software resources. Please reinstall Safari". I have gotten this message twice before.
I know I can always take it back to the Apple Store, however, if I can try to diagnose the problem myself and save the strain of throwing it through the Apple Store's window causing a frustration inspired ruckus, I'd consider it a good day. Does anyone have the slightest idea what might have gone wrong? And is it really worth the aggravation (or apprehension hehe!)? Should I throw in the towel and purchase another one?
Any help or input would be graciously appreciated!!

Sorry for your pain! I would say since you have an open case with the Apple Store (they did something you say had a worse effect than before) you have a right to go back and continue, I would think. We could try to sort it out but it sounds like it could be fairly complicated. Four years old isn't that terrible, but it's not surprising to hear of CD drive problems. I think it is worth another trip back. Then you'll know better if it's time to buy new. And a refurb is cheaper than one of those plate glass windows!

  • Snow leopard and adobe flash problem

I can get the webcam from national geographic:
on my old imac G5 running leopard and my new imac running snow leopard using FIREFOX but NOT SAFARI. There is just a blank area where the webcam should be. I loaded the latest adobe flash 10 download but it still DOES NOT WORK. I don't know if this is a new SAFARI problem or SNOW LEOPARD problem. Any answers would be appreciated. Thanks.

are you able to play any videos posted in youtube?if you do. Then its not an SL problem. I tried the link that you posted and indeed it does not play. but i have a lot of websites that requires flash:
    youtube.com
    mini-clip.com
    facebook.com
if its a problem with Snow leopard then I wouldn't be able to browse these websites. Isolate it one by one. It may be a content issue. and NOT SL nor FlashPlayer
Tried it on firefox 3.5 and it works there but not safari. It maybe because the content is not compatible with Safari.

  • FCS 3 + Snow Leopard + Panasonic GH-1 = problems?

    I have a Panasonic GH-1 (PAL).
Before upgrading to Snow Leopard (was on Leopard), my clips from GH-1 could play fine in Log and Transfer.
After upgrading to Leopard, all the clips are now like in a fast forward mode. Same after transcoding into ProRes.
    Anyone having similar problems?

Did you trash your FCP preferences files after installing?

I have a Mac pro 1.1 with a Nvidia 8800GT and I have having a lot of problems since update to snow leopard latest release. My computer start to show lines and giggle with lines static and then freeze, it make so bad that you can't do anything even restart the computer does not solve the problem. I have reset the pram and all possible solution available. Maybe the video card is going to die soon?

My MacPro 3.1 with Nvidia 8800 Gt is also not HP.
Initially I was getting some video glitches just after start up but then the machine would settle down and run for the session.
about a week ago the situation got increasingly worse so that from last Sat morning its will not even boot up 4 times out of 5 tries.
Gets to the apple symbol then freezes
I've tried booting from the snow leopard install disc but even then its freezes and I see many video artifacts.
I've ordered a ATi Radeon 4870 to replace the graphics card as I thought that might be the issue. The 8800 GT was full of fluff I feared it had cooked itself this summer.
But now I'm concerned from reading several forum topics that a recent OSX update has effectively killed machines with the 8800 Gt card.
I can't really operate fully without my macpro as that where most of the software is held. CS5 master suite etc

  • Help! Snow Leopard install (from Tiger) problems, Email, Printer, internet connections, etc.

Hi late, but done I just installed Snow Leopard, in hopes of all being better, like SL's ablity to send attachments as "Windows Friendly", better apps, etc.
Well, right away, after installing SL, iLife, & iWork there are problems! I also did the Updates right after.
First, my Address book was totally BLANK - including birthdays of grandkids, used in Birthday Widget! This despite that in Mail, "Previous Recipents" shows those ones "in my address book" & those not in it. But when I click on those I want in my email box ... they're not there, even my daughters!
Q - SO, how do I get this data back in, other than making new cards & groups ... already done in Tiger?
Also, I tried to send an attachment, Windows friendly" box was checked, but saw somewhere I have to "contact" my server? Why? (Verizon, which hates Apple, & caused many other problems since I got this!)
Second, my Printer, though shown as the default (Epson CX 6000) fails to print ... though all is connected properly. When I try to look for tutorials, etc on line, Safari bumped me from one negligible page to another, none of which I was looking for. Then when asking for "immediate tech help" I was disconnected, because Safari showed I wasn't connected to the net!!!
Third, How come the new Safari dosn't have a box where I can type in a URL to go to? seems awful weird!
Fourth, System Preferences, in Tiger too, unlocks various item pages, though I've locked them? also weird.
I'm off to the Apple store tomorrow, but IF anyone can help with any of these now ... you'd be an angel!
    Kathy LPV

If you did not repair permissions and restarted your computer after the installations do so now.
Check Epson's driver download website.  You probably need to update the drivers to work in Snow Leopard.  Please post back the results.

  • I'm finally getting Snow Leopard. Are the problems fixed?

I have an early 2008 iMac 8,1 running Leopard 10.5.8. I have not upgraded because I have not felt the need, but it seems I am getting left behind. I know there were a lot of complaints about Snow Leopard which is one of the reasons I did not get it before. I expect to be getting Lion or Mountain Lion before too long so I need Snow.
There were a lot of complaints about compatibility, crashing, things like that. Did those get pretty much fixed? I have a Time Machine backup drive so I expect no problem keeping hold of my stuff even if I have problems installing.

I'd say 10.6.8 is pretty solid, no problems for me, & certainly better than 10.7 or 10.8, & there's likely to be no more updates past 10.6.8.

  • Snow Leopard 10.6.8 problem?

During the past week, when I'm using Safari 5.1 on my MacBook, it often crashes (screen goes completely haywire).  It has not happened when I'm using Foxfire.  I've never experienced a problem like one this before.  I thought my laptop might be dying.  Could this problem be related to the Snow Leopard 10.6.8 update?  If so, any suggestions on how to fix the problem would be appreciated.

If Safari crashes again, post a crash report.
If Safari has just crashed, press the Report button on the CrashReporter dialog box to view the crash  information.
Copy/paste the entire contents of the Crash Reporter window into your reply. If the crash report dialog does not appear or the crash is hard to reproduce, crash logs can be retrieved from the ~/Library/Logs/CrashReporter> folder.
You may have a third party Safari add on installed that was compatible with the prior version of Safari but not 5.1. A crash report will reveal that.

  • Snow Leopard brings display profile problems

Several threads on Apple Discussions are describing problems with some display profiles after upgrading to Snow Leopard.  My own experience is as follows:
I upgraded 2 machines, a 2007 MacBook Pro 2.33 GHz, and an early 2008 Mac Pro octo 2.8 GHz with Apple 30 inch Cinema Display.  I use the Eye1 Display2 hardware calibrator, and have been calibrating to Gamma 2.2 for years as recommended in the Adobe Photoshop Mac Forum.  The MacBook Pro has no issues with display profiles, and looks the same as before.  The Mac Pro, however, was a different story.  As soon as I upgraded, the display just looked wrong to me.  The screen lacked contrast and looked quite soft, almost blurry.  I immediately booted back into a clone of my old Leopard installation to check, and sure enough, there was that punchy contrast & solid color I'd grown accustomed to.  The comparison was run using the same profile on the same hardware.  Only difference was Snow Leopard.  I went back to Snow Leopard and selected Apple's new default profile for my display, and this looked better, but nowhere near my custom profile on my old system.  I actually took a screen shot of Apple's red, yellow & green interface button controls to show the difference.  Totally noticeable as follows:  Screen shot taken in Snow Leopard captures washed out interface elements.  Same Screen shot opened in Leopard allows comparison of the interface elements in Snow Leopard with those in Leopard.  I'd post it here, but it's back at the office & I'm at home today.
I reported this to Apple Feedback, and am posting here in case anyone else has seen this, or has suggestions.  Obvious next step is to recalibrate in Snow Leopard & compare, but that doesn't explain why the same profile on the same hardware looks quite different under Snow Leopard.  Apple's documentation specifically states that those using custom profiles will see no difference after upgrading.

The thing is, I don't believe that Apple changed the UI for Snow Leopard.  I think I'm seeing a difference in the whole screen, using the same custom profile as before on the same hardware.  I am pretty sure we are looking at the same old UI elements being displayed improperly.  To support this, my MacBook Pro UI and screen look the same as they did before the Snow Leopard upgrade.  Only my Mac Pro with Apple Cinema Display is showing the issue.  Both machines were previously running Leopard 10.5.8 with custom display profiles.  After the upgrade, using the same display profiles, the MacBook Pro looks the same as before, while the Mac Pro looks washed out, not just the UI elements, but the whole screen.  Also, I've been unable to generate a satisfactory new custom profile for the Mac Pro using my Eye1 Display2 hardware calibrator.

  • How to uninstall Snow Leopard? major font problems in iWork, iLife

All iWork and iLife apps have shocking font problems... so much so that I need to uninstall Snow Leopard and wait for Apple to sort it out. Does anyone know the best way? And how is it possible that these problems are occurring with Apple's inhouse software? Other stuff seems to be working OK so far for the most part. For a bit more detail on my problems, including sample images:
    http://bit.ly/309G0o

Snow lizard cost me $27.000.00 in unusable fonts. We installed snow lizards (what I'm calling it now) and lost 934 fonts. Say 40 were bad fonts and 896 were type 1 postscript. When I explained to the tech person how big this was to the print community, he had no clue. - I'm still waiting to hear back. I have a case number but now I read from another post they knew Snow Lizard would do this. At 30.00 per font that is almost $27,000 to replace what they thought wasn't important. But in the print world of design this is huge. Every layout and ad that needs an update - which take a few minutes is a whole rework. They have no clue what business a mac computer is in or they don't see us as important.
I did find if I load those fonts or the font missing into the InDesign font folder I can get the old ad to make it to pdf. But photoshop and illustrator, I'm screwed. And if I didn't outline the type in illustrator - it's gone. I asked the tech guy if I can go back, and undo this slimy lizard and he said probably not if we do backups. We do backups every hour - this is the print business. I feel forsaken. I've been with apple for so many years.

  • Severe snow leopard and software update problems

I just upgraded to Snow Leopard in order to get support for my iPhone 4. Ever since then there have been serious problems.
    1. The Snow Leopard upgrade kept bringing up the "you must shut your computer down" grey screen. I had to attempt several installs before it FINALLY installed. I figured I was in the clear.
    2. Now software update crashes the computer (same "you must shut your computer down" screen) anytime I try to install ANY update.
    3. I've run disk utility and repaired the disk and also fixed permissions, it doesn't help.
    4. Snow Leopard appears to be running ok as long as I don't try to install anything.
    5. I tried to manually download and install the 10.6.4 combo update and that crashed the computer a few times and then when it got to completion it said that the update could not be installed and to contact the software manufacturer.
I've combed the discussions and don't see an issue like this, specifically it doesn't just FREEZE or restart, but it brings up the "you must shut down" screen.
I've considered rolling back to 10.4 but that would cause my iphone not to sync. Any ideas?

First things first. Those are kernel panics. You have to address those before going on to anything else. See

Grey discs are Only For Use With The Computer They Shipped With!
Drivers on the disc are for the hardware on the MacBook Pro (not Mac Pro - that's an expensive desktop computer) only.
Also there is power management software for charging and running from the battery. iMacs do not have batteries and the power management system is totally different.
It's something of a miracle that you got any installation at all - usually the disc will just abort and eject itself.
The only way to upgrade is with the retail Snow Leopard DVD.
You need to call Apple Phone Sales to order it as it's no longer available online or in the high street Apple stores. Price is $29.
Possibly one or two third-party retailers may have some left.
There are also a few on Amazon Market Place and eBay, but prices are already rising.
While you're talking to Phone Sales enquire about Lion, because that too is no longer available online.
I don't think the 2007 models can run Mountain Lion.

It warns that doing so will erase my current iphone and replace the contents of it with the contents in my new iTunes library.

  • Install OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard on MacBook Pro problems

    Hi all,
About early November, I upgraded my MacBook Pro (Mid 2009) but failed to restart it. The spin sign stayed there for a very long time and nothing happened more.
So I decided to reinstall the OS X 10.6 with a CD ordered from Apple with the MacBook Pro, but the installation stopped and reported failure after a few minutes. Then, I tried to format the hard disk (Toshiba 250G), but it reported either "Input/output error" or "Could not allocate memory".  I thought my hard disk may be broken, I bought a new one (Hitachi 750G) but still can not format the disk with same errors.
After search related topic in the community, I took the internal hard disk out and mount on my Desktop (Mac Pro, OS X 10.5.8) through USB port, I could format both the hard disks (Toshiba 250G & Hitachi 750G). I followed one instruction about "Installing Snow Leopard onto an External Hard Drive" (Dan Hinckley, Maciverse) and installed the OS X 10.6 on one hard disk (Hitachi 750G) through my Desktop Optical Driver (Booted on the DVD).
I mounted the hard disk (Hitachi 750G) on my MacBook Pro and could run the system. Then I decided to move this external hard disk into my MacBook Pro as an internal hard disk, however, when the MacBook Pro started, it showed a STOP sign (one circle with an oblique line) and several quick flashes of Apple icon, then reported some error messages like below (I list some of them),
"Panic CPU0 Caller", "Unable to find driver for this platform", "SourceCache Debugger Called", etc.
         What shall I do next,
1 Install the OS X 10.6 one more time when the hard disk (Hitachi 750G) inside my MacBook Pro, booting from DVD through Optical Driver.
2 Get the hard disk (Hitachi 750G) out and mount as USB external again and update to higher version of OS X (but which version?).
          3 Other suggestions?
    Thank you!
    Bart

I purchased a Macbook Pro on Nov 2 2011 which was pre-installed with Lion and I'm trying to install Snow Leopard on it. It won't recognise my SL Install Disc at all and just hangs so I wiped the drive and attempted to start up from a bootable SL memory stick. I got an audible alarm from the Macbook Pro which would only stop when I restarted the computer. I had to re-install Lion from a Time Machine back up via the internal recovery disk. I'm pretty sure that late 2011 MBP will not take SL but I'm waiting for a Firewire 400 to 800 cable to arrive so I can try to wipe the internal drive entirely and install via Target Disk mode. I'm not hopeful but I gotta try as I need Snow Leopard to run Pro Tools and other programs. If only I'd bought it before October 24th this wouldn't be happening!!!!!!!!!!
