Quicktime to WMV problems

I have a Quicktime file which my client needs in Windows Media Video format. It was generated in Keynote (iWork 9) and has some interactivity, i.e. points at which the user must click to continue. This all works fine in Quicktime but on conversion to WMV it loses resolution (which I have resolved to an acceptable level) however I cannot nail the interactivity issue. I have tried to convert the Quicktime files in a number of ways, e.g. Flip4Mac, Adobe Media Converter, several other off-the-self packages including Video2SWF. Any suggestions? Anything would be greatly appreciated.

Export to WMP formats is only enabled via that third party software. To export without "watermarks" or more than 50% of the file requires you purchase an upgrade from that vendor.
That vendor has addressed the export error message by issuing an update of their product. Why you still get an error can only be answered by them.

I never understood why PC users wish to continue with WMP formats after they've moved to the Mac OS. PC users can view QuickTime formats using the free software download. You don't have to send them WMP files.

Media Cleaner does an excellent job, but if you haven't already updated to Quicktime 7.1 DO NOT DO THIS, as the new version of Quicktime creates some problems. (The movies still convert in Cleaner, but have to be converted one at a time instead of as a batch).

within the last 2 weeks i have exported from FCP studio 7.0.3 as quicktime conversion, the settings are:

the results i get a odd. - the video exports fine, except for the beginning titles, instead a still frame image from somewhere else in the video occupies that intro, until the first transition- in this case- dip to white, then the rest of the video is fine. the portion of the beginning that does not show are composed of: livetype text credits in V2 - in which i have done a manual opacity fade up and down - so the livetype text fades in, over matte color solid in V1. in the exported video -i do not see any of this, all i see is a seemingly random still from somewhere else in the video. i can however hear the audio as it is supposed be.
cant figure out why this is happening. anybody know?
i think the livetype files are 1920 x 1080.
my FCP sequence is 720 p
this has only recently started happening and doesn't seem to be consistent.
im wondering if it has to do with the live type files, or the white solid?…
or the conversion settings above?

Earlybird is exporting H264 ... the Key Frames setting is determining the GOP length. This value should really be determined based on the complexity of the video, to my understanding, the actual frame rate has no bearing on it. If you have very complex fast moving content then a low Key Frame rate is advisable to ensure good image quality (although it will adversely affect the filesize) whereas if you have slow moving or static content (like an interview subject) then a higher Key Frame rate will still produce a good image but at a smaler filesize. The default of 24 should be pretty much fine as a catchall starting point.

Corrupted render files (and render references) can be a pain because FCP will use those files and references in place of the original media when building the export. And so it should as it does't want to waste time re-rendering sections that are apparently already rendered. Unfortuantely, as noted, if the render file has gone bad and/or starts referencing the wrong media then you'll get these wierd flashes of completely unexpeced and unwanted footage showing up where it shouldn't be. When you trash those files then QT / FCP will just go back and re-reference the original media ... so it's usually a worthwhile step to take just in case thats the problem. The worse case scenario is that it only that doesn't work and you spend some time unecessarily re-rendering.
As to why these files go bad? That I don't know. Why do Preferences get corrupted? That I don't know either but it definitely happens :-(

Quicktime to wmv bug

I'm exporting a quicktime to WMV and only getting 18 seconds of a 30 second file. This was a squeezed sorensen. An unsqueezed sorensen won't even export.

A bug is a repeatable operational glitch where the system does other than what it is programmed to do and the error can be reproduced by other users with similar equipment, software and media. This does not include the system doing what the user thought it would do. While the distinction may seem inconsequential to you, it is a huge difference.
For example, having Quicktime capturing functionality crippled during system and/or FCP upgrades is a bug. The upgrade process acts in a way that it should not, with a result that is not what the updating process is programmed to do. It has been confirmed by multiple users over a range of systems. User intention has nothing to do with the process.
Asking a system to do something it was not designed to do (ie use PC based media) is not a bug.
What this boils down to is this, it is not a bug unless the operation went other than what the process was designed, coded and tested to do and it is a repeatable systemic error. Just because an operation did not go as you intended does not make it a bug. Your intentions are not part of the system.
It is an issue of semantic accuracy, not sensitivity.

Cmon apple, itunes, quicktime-fix this problem

Does itunes, apple, and quicktime know this problem (buffer overrun/ c++viusal) exists?
I'm guessing by the looks of this discussion board that there are hundreds of viewers that have this problem and 10's of thousands who havn't griped yet.
$900 worth of ipods in my family and they are all rendered useless!!!

That buffer overrun error affects many programs, not just QuickTime and iTunes. Do a search and you'll find that error reported quite commonly. So while I can't say for certain, it may be a problem with your system, not with QT or iTunes per se.
Here are some things to try (collected from other web sites):
First, download and install the Ewido antispyware security suite (you can download a trial version of the program). When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu". Launch ewido. You will need to update Ewido to the latest definition files. On the left hand side of the main screen click update, then click on Start Update. The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
Once the updates are installed do the following:
Click on scanner
Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
While the scan is in progress you will be prompted to clean files, click OK
When it asks if you want to clean the first file, put a check in the lower left corner of the box that says "Perform action on all infections" then choose clean and click OK.
Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
Click Save report. (it may be useful if spyware is detected that cannot be removed)
Save the report .txt file to your desktop.
Then close Ewido and, if it reported any infections, reboot and try iTunes and QuickTime and see if matters have improved..
If that doesn't help or doesn't turn up anything, try this:
Try running Disk Cleanup from System Tools or CCleaner (freeware) to remove unnecesary files. Then run the Disk Defragmenter from System Tools.
Next, click Start then Run and type chkdsk /f (Note the space before /f) and click "OK". This procedure is going to want to run on reboot so go ahead and type Y at the prompt and press "Enter" Reboot your machine. This might take a while depending on what it finds...Do Not interrupt this operation!
When it completes and is back to the desktop, try QuickTime/iTunes and post back with how it is running.

Problem Converting Keynote Quicktime to WMV with Flip4Mac

I can see that perhaps one other person may have had this issue. I have a continuous presentation exported from Ketnote as a Quicktime Movie. This plays from end to end without a hitch.
I am using Flip4Mac to convert to WMV, something I have done on many occasions with other QT files without issue (not from Keynote)
The resulting file only exports to the first transition in the Keynote presentation.
I have made the quicktime continuous (so it does not stop at slide changes) I have tried un-checking the sprite track option.
Pretty much every combination but it still always only exports to the first transition.
Any clues ? What am I missing ?

yes it does however I have been messing around over the weekend and have got some of the way to solving this.
Sorry its a bit long and convoluted but here goes.
I extracted the video and audio tracks as suggested below and made a new flattened movie.
I then found a utility to remove all the chapter markers from Ecamm Network.
This removed every chapter (slide) marker.
I then re-saved and made a WMV from that file. It exported until the last transition and stopped !! ( I checked with the orig file)
So I then converted the end section to WMV and joined the 2 WMV files together in Quicktime Pro.
This then played happily from end to end.
BUT you cant then save that as a WMV ! Quicktime exports it again as a .mov
So I thought that .mov must work if I convert that to wmv but no, stops in the exact same place.
There is no sprite track no chapters but there must be some other metadata that is upsetting Flip4Mac
Anyway closer than I was.
Cant import to FCP or use DV as despite setting the frame rate to 25 in Keynote it actually exports at 22 so any 'video' frame rates make the animation very jerky as you would expect.

QuickTime exported .wmv get uploaded as .wmv.bin

When uploadindg my QuickTime exported (compressed) .wmv to my website's server it arrives as a ".wmv.bin" format and cannot be recognized as a .wmv movie on my website.
This just started to happen. In the past 18 months I have created and ftp'd almost 100 .wmv movies to my website's server without any problem
Any help is appreciated.

You, and TopoTone before you, seem to be on the right track. I spoke with the tech folks at my server who told me there must be something strange happening during the upload. Then I uploaded the .wmv version giving me the trouble, this time reverting to my older Mac G4, and it worked--the movie now plays.
So I will check with NetFinder, my ftp program support people to see if on the new MacPro a setting was changed.

At least I have until Sunday, when I upload another movie, to straighten out the problem.

Quicktime and WMV

I have "Flip4Mac" which allows me to play Windows Media Files. The problem is that when I click on a link online to view a movie, Quicktime tells me that it's not a valid URL. There has to be a way of playing/streaming WMV online, right?

ok, it took me awhile to get back to this...
I have reinstalled Flip4Mac, installed VCL, and installed Macro Flash Player and I still cannot get any videos to play anything from the following site:
http://news.yahoo.com/video
Do I need to configure something? All I get is a popup telling me that its an invalid URL! Im pulling my hair out because I use this site for news videos often (obviously prior to my mac). Thanks for the patience and help!

QuickTime Plugins have problems on Windows 7 (64-bit)

Uninstalling/reinstalling QuickTime did not fix the problem. Still get a script error and no QuickTime ActiveX plugin installed when accessing a web page with the embedded player on Windows 7 Pro 64-bit with Internet Explorer 8 (64-bit).
I did more experiments and found the following: Windows 7 Pro 64-bit comes with two versions of Internet Explorer 8; one is 32-bit and the other is 64-bit. The 32-bit version of Internet Explorer will install the QuickTime ActiveX plugin and load a video; however, the Controller bar at the bottom of the player is just pure black--you can't see the controls. If you click on the right place, it will play the video, but you can't see the control your clicking on. This exact same behavior also occurs in Firefox 32-bit, Chrome 32-bit and Safari 32-bit when running on Window 7 Pro 64-bit: they all exhibit the same problem with their respective QuickTime plugins.
So, there appears to be *two issues*: 1) The QuickTime plugins run impaired in 32-bit browsers running on Window 7 (64-bit); and, 2) The QuickTime ActiveX plugin is incompatible with, and will not install in, the 64-bit Internet Explorer 8 browser running on Windows 7 (64-bit).
If anyone at Apple is paying attention--Please fix this and issue an update to include plugins that work in both 32-bit and 64-bit browsers when running on Windows 7 (64-bit). Thank you.

AE CC and the Rest of Adobe Apps - ProRes Quicktime Render Gamma Problem Back AGAIN

With this version I am back to square one with AE NOT being able to render out correct gamma exporting to PR4444 -
Scenario (And this matter NOT whether I use Color Management or Not)
1) I open a Clip in AE or PPRO (In this case a TIFF Sequence RAW'ed from Lightroom)
2) I switch back and forth between Lightroom and AE and the images are identical in color and gamma
3) I export to PR4444 and open in Quicktime Player or FCPx and the Gamma is off.
4) If I re-import the exported file into AE - AE reads the file with a diff. gamma and the result appears to be identical with source
But it is no good that the result only looks the way it was intended in AE ! --- The poeople on the web are not viewing the movie in AE but with other players.
If i open that same tiff sequence in the quicktime player pro and export to PR4444 the results are 100% identical.
I find it highly frustrating that a company so higly regarded with so amazing software is NOT able to render out an image correctly...
This problem has been around since forever and I find it higly disturbing that this issue has not yet been addressed.
As of now I have no choice that to ditch AE and PPRO.... I WANT the images I work with to look the way they do in the app while color grading... What point is there in CG'ing images to perfection
if adobe cant even render out the results....
As I stated it does NOT matter whether I am color managing or not... Results are lighter in gamma when viewed in anything else than AE or PPRO !!!!!!
The amount to correct back is approx. a gamma of 0.9
BTW --- When in 32 bit how come I cannot set a gamma of 0.905 why is the gamma limited to two digits after the comma... 32 bit has MUCH more to offer !!!!

I have tried those tips before. Unfortunately, I haven't had great success with them in this case.
When I reserve the 16GB of RAM for other apps and RAM preview a comp containing multiple Prores 4444 footage layers, it plays back and retains the cache as expected. However, the 2nd RAM preview of another comp in the same project containing multiple Prores 4444 footage layers stays stuck in "Initializing Background Processes." A check with Activity Monitor usually shows aeselflink processes that are hung up.
This has been my experience until I came upon the work-around of precomping Prores files.
To demonstrate, here's a screen shot of the stuck process with the memory settings I used -
I rebooted the system and tried 2 more times with the same result.
If I simply precomp the Prores 4444 footage layers as demonstrated in the video, I get smooth RAM preview caching and performance. This works even if I allocated less RAM to other applications in the Memory and Multiprocessing preferences (hence the 6GB setting from earlier). With the work-around, AE runs smooth with no hiccups and RAM previews behave as expected.

QuickTime Player export problem

When I save in QuickTime Player (10.0) as Movie everything works fine, but when I select another format, I get an "Export Progress" window, but after that finishes there is no file.
The problem seems similar as reported in this 1 year old thread:

Any idea what is going on?

This is like rallenty problems. Everyone tell me :" use rallenty in motion..is very good " Rallenty in Motion has the same identical problems (es : strobing...) that are in FCP (IDENTICAL !!). I use this SW and partially all applications of FCS 2 until 3 months but I have find problems like "banding" that people that use FCP from many many time have never see...is possible this??
It's a great suite but these things are inaccetable...this is my opinion.

QuickTime vs Shake - problems

Hello.
Yesterday we made the upgrade in our system to version 10.5.7. Onlyone 1 of our 6 computers had a problem importing quicktime to the shake. It send me an error like this: "Quick Time error (-54)" and only appears black video. I check the codecs in shake for DVCPRO HD 1080i 50 and it's there, so i don't understand what's wrong.
It's only with the shake, I tested in the final cut, in motion application and it's fine.
Am I missing something that I don't know?

iTunes suddently stopped launching day before yesterday and I get a message which explains that "windows data protection" stopped this program from executing. I tried reinstalling iTunes with the same result so I decided to uninstall and reinstall. Uninstallation of iTunes was successful but I could not uninstall Quick Time as is neccessary for a complete new removal/reinstallation. Instead, unintstallation of Quick time starts and proceeds for a while and then "rolls bacK', declaares a "fatal error" and exits. Anyone faced a similar problem? Any known fixes ?

Taken as a whole, your symptoms suggest that some application (other than QuickTime itself) has stashed old QuickTime componentry in unorthodox locations in your system files. (It can also cause "Fatal error" uninstall trouble for QuickTime.)
So we'll go looking for the older QuickTime componentry in the most common locations for it to be stashed.
First we'll need to change some view options on the PC.
1. Open My Computer from the desktop or Start menu.
2. In the Tools menu, click Folder Options.
3. Click the View tab.
4. In the "Advanced settings" pane under "Hidden files and folders" make sure that the "Show hidden files and folders" option is selected, and the "Hide extensions for known file types" option is unchecked.
5. Click OK.
Now in My Computer, open your C drive.
Open the "Windows" folder.
Open the "system32" folder.
What files and/or folders can you see in there with QuickTime in the file/folder name? (In a standard installation of QuickTime, you should see precisely two files ... QuickTime.qts and QuickTimeVR.qtx ... and no QuickTime folders whatsoever.)

Flash/Java/Quicktime?/Safari Problem

Alright, I have this pretty large problem in my case.
I just updated to QT 7.3 and iTunes 7.5, restarted my computer because of the update.
& went on normally, then when trying to load a site like youtube.com (with its flash videos and other things)
Nothing shows up for things swf/flash/java based.
I then restarted my computer again, but the same problem occurs.
I have repaired disk permissions, but that didnt do anything.
I reinstalled flash and java. and 'Reset' Safari.
So what am I suppose to do now?

I'm having a similar problem ever since I did the 10.4.11 update. If I use the computer after having been in sleep mode all flash content comes up with a quicktime symbol and a question in front of it when using safari 3.0.4 and in firefox nothing comes up. The first time it did this a dialog box popped up and asked if I would like to enable quicktime to play flash. Enabling or disabling doesn't seem to affect the problem, however if I restart the computer everything is fine. I would prefer to be able to put the darn thing to sleep instead of having to restart every time i want to get online. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
