Quicktime UI doesn't "catch"

Since upgrading to Lion (and later on to ML) Quicktime has stopped reacting to mouse input. Well, almost. Basically, I can only access the playhead/timeline – the rest of the UI acts as if it doesn't exist. It shows up just fine, the problem is that if I click anywhere (say, the play button. Or the background. Or anywhere that isn't the playhead) whatever lies underneith quicktime gets activated instead. So:
1. Open a Finder window (just as an example, it could be anything, EG: an application) and maximize it to fill the screen
2. Open Quicktime
3. Hit the play button in Quicktime
Result: Quicktime gets hidden underneith the Finder window which is now the active window. And quicktime doesn't start playback.
I've tried deleting QT prefs and caches to no avail. I even replaced t QTKit.framework folder and the application itself from a fresh install on another mac, but that didn't help either.
Any ideas? As it stands, QT is obviously completely useless to me, so I'm relying on VLC for everything – which is a bit silly.
Setup: Macbook Pro 2.8 i7 w. 8 GB ram

Ah! Worked it out with a little help (from my friends, hoho):
In my Lib/Preferences ƒ there was a LOT of files called QuickTimePlayerX.plist with some strange number after .plist. Deleting those fixed it. I wonder what they were, though ...
Examples:

  • Quicktime 10 doesn't recognize external video source.

Setting up my new 27" iMac, and discover that Quicktime 10 doesn't recognize an external video source fed in through the firewire port. It is an older Sony analog to digital video converter, and goes through a FW400 to FW800 converter. Quicktime doesn't even "see" that video source as a choice when recording, nor does iMovie, even though it shows up in the System Profiler.
Apps that were ported over from my previous system, however, such as "Video Viewer" and "Final Cut Pro" do see the source, presumably because they were configured to do so on the old system.
Is there some global settings file that I can edit, or something similar that I can do, to make it visible to all apps?
    Thanks!

    Hi,
Quicktime 7 does recognize the video source, but newer apps, such as iMovie, won't. I'd like to be able to capture to iMovie, but can't without the video source being recognized. Is there a fix?
    Thanks!

I did install psmouse-alps-driver since a thread mentioned it might solve the issue but now i don't even see the TouchPad which showed up as ALPS DualPoint TouchPad and now i'm afraid of how i should go about to remove the driver and the kernel modules that were installed with the AUR package (will it remove the kernel parameters etc automaticly or will i have to dig in and if so where to begin?)

Your friends don't know what they're talking about.  SL is quite good...  far better than Leopard in my experience.  The issue is that many people have systems that get screwed up a little bit, and then they install some major update, and suddenly a slightly screwed up system becomes badly screwed up.  (Imagine building a second floor on a house with undiscovered structural defects.)  This is often unfairly blamed on system updates...  if you rely on word of mouth, every version of the Mac OS ever has been the worst ever.
Of course, I've got no experience with Autodesk.  Perhaps Autodesk has issues with SL, if your friends are all using it and having problems.  SL did change a lot under the hood, so older software may be incompatible with it.

  • CURSOR DOESN'T CATCH

I wonder if any of you are experiencing this:
with CATCH ON whenever I use the GOTO Prev/Next MARKER the program doesn't catch and the cursor is therefore "lost". I then have to press PLAY and the window catches. It is definitely a BUG but, who else has it?

As Timo said, it would depend on how you create new row.
Usually this is how, I would do :

  • The quicktime plugin doesn't play mp3 in Firefox

I've got a webpage with <a href="audiofile.mp3" target="a_frame">link text</a>.  This page is part of a website that I'm webmaster on.
Clicking on the link always plays the audio in Safari but is inconsistent in Firefox in my iMac (OSX 10.6.8).  Sometimes the file plays but mostly the click gets ignored.  I'm using Firefox 5.0.1 and the Quicktime plugin is 7.6.6.
I've tried this page on PC based browsers.  Chrome works every time.  IE mostly works but sometimes the audio plays but the player controls aren't displayed.  Firefox is inconsistent.
I've tried disabling other plugins.  Any ideas?

Your "direct link" code doesn't give any instructions to any browser plug-in. Without instructions each different page visitor will get different behavior. Some visitors settings would download the file and others would play the file using a different browser plug-in (Real Player or WMP for example).

  • Quicktime 10 player stutters and skips but quicktime pro doesn't

I have a early 2011 17inch i7 mac book pro and just recently when I play 60fps footage from my 7D camera in quicktime 10, the clips stutter and skips, it does this intermittently and in different parts of the same clip. I can play the clip and it would stutter at one point and then when i play it back again it would play fine at that same part and then stutter at another part. But when i open the same footage in quicktime 7 (quicktime pro) it play with no issues every single time.
So I then tried the same footage on my 8 core MacPro, and played the clips in quicktime 10, all the footage plays with no problems everytime.
Is this a hard drive issue, a grafics card issue? I was at the apple store and seen a genuis and we tried to troubleshoot it but cold not figure out the issue. The apple rep said to replace the hardrive, but i want to make sure before I do. Does anyone have any suggestions.

    Thanks for the response.
I didn't realize those settings weren't controlling the same function, but I see that now... Fact is, I don't use QT all that much, and don't need much functionality from it, just to watch a few screen capture videos I create using Snapz Pro X.
Problem is, I can't control rewind/fast-forward if I can't see the controls, and QT doesn't default to showing the full display. Unfortunately, it seems the pref setting functionality I want apparently doesn't work for MY needs, so I'm stuck with having to manually select the 'fit to screen' setting EVERY TIME I open a new .mov video in QT. I see there's a keyboard short-cut to "fit to screen" (Apple Key/3), but the only thing better than needing to use a key combo EVERY time I open a movie is not needing to use one at all! Very Un-Maclike...
Wondering why QT Pro can't default to opening to the USER'S preference (whether fit to screen or full screen), so as not to have to change it EVERY TIME? This is a PRO app? How long has QT been released, a decade or two? Shouldn't it a mature app, at this point, with little nit-noids like this worked out?

  • SpamAssassin Rating high but Mail-Spam-Filter doesn't catch it

I have SpamAssassin running on my Mail-Server and Mail set to trust the server-side-spam-filter (And as Apple states SpamAssassin is compatible (even used in OS X Server)).
Most Spam gets crunched but I have some that I get over and over again although the SpamAssassin rating is set and often even above 9.
Can I somehow make Mail more sensitive to the rating?
(I don't want to use a custom rule to sort it because then the new mail sound will play for any spam as well.)

No, it doesn’t make sense. You may want to read Mail Help’s “Automatically processing email” article to better understand how rules work in Mail.
the rules operate before the messages are placed in any mailbox
Rules are fully applied to each message, one at a time, in the order they appear in the list. How could it be otherwise? What you say doesn’t make sense to me...
What I should have also suggested is 'stop evaluating rules' on the first rule
That would be redundant and useless. Mail stops evaluating rules for messages moved to another mailbox by a preceding rule.
Rule 2 exists only to make the sound
Problem is, it would also play the sound for junk messages not caught by the first rule.
I suggested 'To includes @' to catch all mail not filtered out by rule 1
Not sure what you mean. If you want the second rule to be applied to every message not caught by the first rule, there is an Every message condition for that.
perhaps move to inbox isn't necessary?
Not only is it unnecessary. As I said, it might cause an infinite loop that Mail cannot handle properly.
This way the spam won't trigger the sound but everything else will.
And that’s precisely part of the problem, that everything else, including junk mail caught by the built-in junk filter (which is applied after all the other rules), will trigger the sound...

  • Quicktime X doesn't launch?

I know people are having lots of problems with Quicktime X, but I'm having an even more basic one -- the software doesn't launch at all. It bounces on the dock, but then nothing happens. ??

I'm having the same problem. I've tried reloading it from the Snow Leopard installation disc using Pacifist but that had no effect and the icon doesn't even bounce now!
If you are referring to the embedded dual 32-/64-bit structure imbedded in the OS, then I don't recommend using Pascifist and would prefer to perform a clean install here. If just the QT X Player application, then you may not have done much, if any, damage to your OS.
Inability to open an application may be due to either a bad installation of the application, a bad PLIST file, or a corrupted or improperly terminated movie file. By setting up an alternative user account, you may be able to determine where the problem lies. If you can open the bare application as a different user, then it is most likely the the PLIST file is corrupted. If the bare application will not open, then it is more likely to be a bad installation. If the bare application opens in both user account but a particular movie file will not open while others do, then the problem is most likely either in the file itself or the components that support that movie.
