We'll try an extension of Insanegi's advice next, Kevin. This time we'll uninstall both *Apple Application Support* and QuickTime. (QuickTime needs a properly working version of Apple Application Support in place in order to work correctly.) When we reinstall QuickTime, that then should also reinstall Apple Application Support. We'll also take a few other explicit precautions.
*Preliminary phase*
First download and save a copy of the QuickTime installer to your hard drive. (Don't run the install on line, and don't start the install just yet.) Get the version of the QuickTime installer that doesn't mention iTunes.
http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/
Now quit Safari if you have it open. (The 4.0.4 version of Safari also uses Apple Application Support, and will interfere with the Apple Application Support uninstall if it is open.)
*Uninstall phase*
Head into your "Uninstall a program" control panel.
Uninstall QuickTime.
Uninstall Apple Application Support.
(Fron now on, until we reinstall Apple Application Support, your Safari 4.0.4 (if you have that installed) will no longer be able to launch.)
Next we'll remove any left-over QuickTime or Apple Application Support program files.
In "Computer", navigate into the C:\Program Files\ folder. Right-click on the QuickTime folder (if it still exists) and select "Delete".
In "Computer" navigate into the C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple\ folder. Right-click on the *Apple Application Support* folder (if it still exists) and select "Delete".
In "Computer" navigate into the C:\Windows\system32\ folder. Check to see if there is a QuickTime file or a QuickTimeVR file. If either of them still exist, right-click on each and select "Delete".
Empty your recycle bin.
*Reinstall phase*
Restart the PC. (If iTunes is installed on the PC, you'll probably receive a message at this stage saying that iTunes will not run because Apple Application Support is missing. Click through the message.)
Do not open any applications.
Disconnect from your network and/or the Internet.
Disable all security software (firewall, antivirus and antispyware).
Now start the QuickTime install by doubleclicking the QuickTimeInstaller.exe file you downloaded earlier. (This install will also reinstall Apple Application Support.)
Reenable all security software prior to reconnecting to your network and/or the internet.
Does the install seem to go through properly? If so, try launching QuickTime again. Does it launch without the error message this time?

Hi .  Ever since I downloaded the last itunes and quicktime update ( a week or so ago), I can't access any movies or video podcasts i have store in itunes on my pc (vista).  iTunes crashes and my error reports tell me it is a quicktime error.  Do i uninstall and reinstall quicktime, or completely uninstall itunes and reinstall it -- if so, what will i lose?  Help, please!

  • QuickTime Update will not install

    Hi All,
I ran software update on my 2.3GHz Mac Book Pro today. The OS security update installed just fine, but the QuickTime 7.4.1, ProKit 4.5 Update, and iTunes 7.6.1 will not install. All i get as an error is: "Sorry, An unexpected error occurred" It seems that this is QuickTime related as it seems to be the common thread among these updates (and the os update went though ok). Current QT is 7.4.0 (92).
I have repaired disk permissions and ran the repair disc function on my OS partition, but i didn't help.
    Does anyone have any suggestions?
My computer has Final Cut Studio 2, Adobe CS3 web, AE CS3, among other things.

I'm having a similar, but worse problem. The quicktime update crashed upon install, and now many of my programs don't work.
    - Quicktime crashes when I click on it, telling me to update to a new version (more on that problem later)
    - Windows Media Player gives me an error saying ""Windows Media Player" could not be launched because of a shared library error: "B<WindowsMediaPlayer><Apple;Carbon;Multimedia><CFMPriv_QuickTime>"
    - Internet Explorer does the same shared library error
    - World of Warcraft hangs the computer on a black screen when I try to launch it.
So, you might ask, why don't I just install the newest version of QT? I can't. When I try it through Software Update, it gets almost completely done, then says "sorry, an unexpected error has occurred. The installer has been moved to the trash. Please try again from the file."
If I move the installer out of the trash and try to install, it gets to 86% complete, then crashes and says "There was an error installing the software. Please try again."
If I download the installer directly from Apple's QuickTime site (and I'm installing the version for Tiger that is supposed to be good for OS 10.4.9 and above; I have 10.4.11, so in theory I should be good to go), the same error occurs.
So, not only can I not use QuickTime, but it appears as though substantial other portions of my computer are inoperable due to the botched software upgrade.
I, much like the original poster, would be greatly appreciative to hear any suggestions as to how to solve this problem.
    Thanks

  • After downloading latest quicktime update, itunes store will not load

Has anyone had this same problem after downloading latest quicktime update. iTunes store will not load.

This happened to me today as well post installing the latest version of itunes.   I did a search on google for the error and came across a recommendation to :
Note: Start Windows in Safe Mode to complete any of the following steps if you're unable to access Windows normally due to the msvcr80.dll error.
If, and only if, you're receiving the msvcr80.dll is missing error when you open Apple iTunes, do the following: (skip this step if your msvcr80.dll error is occurring with a different program)
Uninstall from Windows the following five programs in this order: iTunes, Apple Software Update, Apple Mobile Device Support, Bonjour, and finally Apple Application Support. If you have iCloud, remove it as well.
Uninstalling these programs in Windows is done from an applet in Control Panel called Programs & Features (in Windows 8, 7, or Vista) or Add or Remove Programs (in Windows XP).
Note: Songs and playlists in iTunes will not be removed when you uninstall the iTunes program or any of the other, already-mentioned Apple programs. If you'd still like to back them up, they're usually located in the My Music folder in Windows.
Download the latest version of iTunes from Appleand note the location you're saving it to so you can find it once it's done.
Run the iTunes installation as an administrator. If you're not sure how to do that, see How Do I Open an Elevated Command Prompt? for help. That procedure shows you how to open the Command Prompt program as an administrator, but the steps are essentially the same for anything, including the iTunes installation package you just downloaded.
A general overview of removing and reinstalling iTunes can also be found here on Apple's site but the above procedure seems to work better in this particular situation.

  • Problems with Quicktime update

I just downloaded the latest Quicktime Update and then opened FCP 5 on my PowerMac G5 with 4 GB of memory. I can't do anything. I have 80GB of space on my hard disk plus a couple of Firewire drives attached. If I click on Preferences and anything else on the menu bar it takes forever (I actually give up) before I'm given a drop down menu. Is this a Quicktime Problem?

Hmmm. I don't have an answer to that, but I just installed the latest Quicktime Update last night on my TiBook 1Ghz and after the restart my airport will no longer auto-connect to my wireless network. I have to connect manually now. I don't see how the two would be related, but that is the last thing I did before things went bad!
    Any help would be appreciated.

  • No function after iTunes/Quicktime update

After restarting my G4 Power Mac when the iTunes/Quicktime update had installed, my screen went to blue and froze. I did a hard reboot and now any program I open quits within seconds and I can't open any of my folders! When I try to open something, everything but the dock (toolbar and desktop icons) disappears and come back in a few seconds. Is this an iTunes issue or is there something else going on?

Try booting in Safe Mode. Hold down the Shift key during startup. If that doesn't do it, try holding down the X key during startup. If that doesn't start it up, I think you need to post over in the forum that applies to your particular machine (iBook, MacBook, iMac, etc.) The pros over there might be able to help. Don't hesitate to post back if you have more questions.

    Yoeki,
First of all, Welcome to  Discussion Forums!
You mention nothing of what QuickTime version you were updating from and to which version you updated to? Also, what is the exact OS 10.3 version you are at? 10.3.9? Did you update via Software Updater or through Apple Downloads and were any other downloads attempted at the same time?
As always, as much background information as possible may help users here to help you troubleshoot your problem.
Also, have you tried booting into Safe Mode (different than Single User Mode) by using this method found at: "Starting up in Safe Mode"?
Additionally, there is a forum for QuickTime here in discussions that may be helpful found at "QuickTime for Mac OS" if you were not aware.

  • Rosetta no longer functions after iTunes & Quicktime update

I got off the 3rd phone call to AppleCare (three techs and product specialist -- the least helpful in the bunch by the way) and finally isolated the problem I'm having but the reaction from the AppleCare guy (the last one pretty much freaked) means there is little hope for a quick solution from Apple.
After updating iTunes and Quicktime using OSX software update. I could no longer launch legacy apps that operate using rosetta (i.e MS Office, AppleWorks, JMP, etc.). Additionally, if I go into GetInfo from the finder and click "Open using Rosetta" that app will no longer launch. In both cases the app simply (if clicked from the finder) appears briefly in the dock and then disappears.
When I had AppleCare on the line the guy went to confirm something with me on his machine and was very surprised to find that his copy of MS Word was not working either (his word were something like: "Good Lord, the menus are all grayed out, huh?". At which point I decided there was not going to be a fix. He sent me some articles on Archive and Install, which I may do but I'm hoping not to go that route.
I've got one more symptom that may help others figure out what's happening, which will hopefully mean you can help me fix this:
When I try and launch an app (legacy or universal) from the command line using rosetta (see this for more info) I get: Segmentation fault!
Okay, first would someone out there confirm that this is not happening on their system. Then, one of you brilliant souls, let me know what I can do to fix it. Is there a sneaky way I could bust into a package/install image and install a fresh copy of the rosetta libraries etc? My experience with Segmentation Fault usually points to the executable being broken, but I'm by no stretch of the imagination an expert.
    Regards,
    David G.

You won't like this but I figured out QT smashed rosetta soon after installing the ituunes/quicktime updates when quicken wouldn't load...i knew it was one of the major apps that was never released for universal...at first i assumed the apple update had just broken quicken and checked the quicken site, finding no posts...then it dawned on me that the QT update must have damaged the System so I went hunting in my apps for other rosetta-only apps, found an old CD label printing program and it exhibited the same behaviors.
I went to the apple site and the company has not posted any info on the bug, then went looking for a standalone rosetta installer...couldn't find one
Here's the part you won't like: my mac mini is 3 months old. I dug out the os x install disks and reinstalled the system. Then went through and reinstalled system updates. Reinstalling the system killed norton so I had to reinstall that too (no wonder i keep all the installer disks as dmg's on the ministack).
Result of all this, replacing the system, was that Rosetta is now working again.
I then went on to install ram, that went less smoothly and my local geniuses were less ingenious by this point, but that's another story for a paperweight website.

  • Applications won't open after Quicktime Update...and fix won't work!

    Hello,
I'm having the same problem as many others: after the recent Quicktime update most of my applications won't open.
I've followed the instructions from Apple at
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=306043
However, when I do the "sudo" prebinding thing, I get this:
update_prebinding: error: dependent dylib is not prebound
    update_prebinding: error 256 running updateprebindingcore
    Any ideas?! Thanks!

  • Loginwindow (Not Responding) after iTunes & Quicktime update

In order to activate my new iPhone this morning I needed to upgrade to iTunes 7.5 and the corresponding Quicktime update. After a reboot and logging in I was presented with the desktop, the dock and a spinning beachball . . . which still hadn't gone away after 10 minutes.
After a while I tried a few things and noticed that the dock was working, until I ctrl clicked on the finder icon that is. After that the dock froze and I rebooted with a long power button press. After logging again I had the same problem, desktop, working dock and spinning beachball.
This time I hit one of my dock stacks and launched the Activity Monitor, only to discover that a process called 'loginwindow' was Not Responding. On force quitting this everything went away and I was back to the login prompt. I logged in again and found the same thing - I can use all the applications I can get to through the dock but have no finder . . .

  • Quicktime update stopped monitor display?

I came to my computer and noticed Apple had pushed an update, I believe to Quicktime. The software installed and wanted a reboot. After completing my work I rebooted, but the display never came back on.
I wouldn't suspect the Quicktime update, except it for the timing. We coincidentally experienced the same symptoms on two other computers this week, one while we were trying to get iTunes set up. Is it possible the update did something to the graphics card? Replacing the graphics card didn't help with the other two.
The monitor still seems to work and sends a "no signal" message when the computer is turned off, and when the computer is turned back on the "no signal" message goes away, but the display never comes up. It looks like maybe the monitor is having trouble syncing up, as there seems to be movement behind the black curtain of the display.
Is anyone aware of this problem with Quicktime, or maybe it was iTunes? Any suggestions?

After A LOT more searching, I came across this article:
    http://daringfireball.net/2007/10/bluein_theface
And I managed to FIX IT!
Turns out, it was actually Application Enhancer that was causing the problem (I've not rebooted my MacBook in about 2 weeks, so it could have actually been a number of things).
Anyway, I couldn't get it to boot into safeboot, so I chuck the Leopard disk in, booted holding C to boot from the the disk, then opened up the Terminal (from the Utilities menu) and deleted Application Enhancer:
    rm -rf /System/Library/SystemConfiguration/ApplicationEnhancer.bundle
The actual path I had to use was in fact:
    rm -rf /Volumes/Macintosh\ HD/System/Library/SystemConfiguration/ApplicationEnhancer.bundle
Hope that helps someone else out there.

  • Quicktime Update/Now or Later?

At this point, I don't (nor have I ever) known what Quick Time is about or what it does for me. I'm sure it's important somehow and I will start spending some time learning about it. But right now, I'm wondering about the update. I plan on waiting for awhile before updating my iTunes (I have 7.7.1) as I'm not having any problems. I also don't have a new iPod or an iPhone, nor do I plan to. My current version of Quicktime is 7.5. Is there any reason/need for me to update this now, aside from the things mentioned above?
    Thanks-
    mwn

    Hi mwn!
Apart from the usual security fixes, there is a lot of new stuff in QT 7.5.5 and installation is recommended, and several applications need it. As an integral part of OS X it should always be kept up to date:
    What's new in QuickTime 7.5.5

About Roland's Sound Set for General MIDI and GS Format
This release of QuickTime includes an instrument sound set licensed from Roland Corporation that makes a complete General MIDI compatible sound set. It also includes additional sounds necessary to make a complete GS Format compatible sound set.
    What is the GS Format?
The GS Format is a standardized set of specifications for sound sources that defines the manner in which multitimbral sound generating devices will respond to the MIDI messages. The GS Format complies with the General MIDI System Level - 1. The GS Format also defines a number of other details over and above the features of General MIDI. These include unique specifications for sound and functions available for tone editing, effects, and other specifications concerning the manner in which sound sources will respond to MIDI messages. Any device that is equipped with GS Format sound sources can faithfully reproduce both General MIDI sound recordings and GS Format MIDI sound recordings.
But I agree about iTunes 8. I don't need that either. But I am still on 7.6.2 !

I have decided to dedicate this thread to the wonderful errors of Lion OSX. Each time I find a huge problem with Lion I will make note of it here.
Today I discovered a new treasure of doggie poop in Lion. No Save As......
I repeat. No Save As. In text editor I couldn't save the file with a new extension. I finally accomplished this oh so majorly difficult task (because we all know how difficult it should be to save a file with a new extension) by pressing duplicate and then saving a copy of the file with a new extension. Yet then I had to delete the first copy and send it to trash. And of course then I have to secure empty trash because if I have to do this the rest of my mac's life I will be taking up a quarter of percentage of space with duplicate files. So this is the real reason they got rid of Save As: so that it would garble up some extra GB on the ole hard disk.
So about 20 minutes of my time were wasted while doing my homework and studying for an exam because I had to look up "how to save a file with a new extension in  mac Lion" and then wasted time sitting here and ranting on this forum until someone over at Apple wakes up from their OSX-coma.
are you freaking kidding me Apple? I mean REALLY?!!!! who the heck designed this?!!! I want to know. I want his or her name and I want to sit down with them and have a long chat. and then I'd probably splash cold water on their face to wake them up.
I am starting to believe that Apple is Satan.

  • Videos take a long time to open after the last quicktime update

    Hey guys
Since I've downloaded the latest quicktime update videos are taking a very long time to open. They used to open instantly and now they take about 40 seconds (negligable difference if quicktime is already open or not).
This is with a Powermac G4 1.25Ghz with 2GB RAM running 10.4.10 and all latest updates.
Any suggestions on how to fix this?

I'd suggest tracing system activity when this long runtime issue occurs, so you could know where this time is spent (db access ? etc) ... a plain SM50 call in parallel could do the trick if runtime is long enough !
