Quicktime Updater should ONLY be used to push updates

From a user standpoint it enrages me that you use the quicktime update application to push the use of iTunes. It is not the role of an update mechanism to push the adoption of other software but purely to distribute updates to existing applications. At the very least there should be an option to never harass me again about iTunes and to only prompt me to update installed applications. Your current practices amount to adware rather than an update mechanism. Put on the other foot, how would Apple react to the idea of MS providing an update mechanism in Office that prompted users to install a mac compatible instance of the Zune software (this is a hypothetical; I realize there is not a OS X zune client)? I don't think that would be seen in a great light by you folks in cuportino.
From a security standpoint, this is a counter productive approach. Subverting your updater as a means to advertise products and push adoption encourages a subset of users to disable the mechanism and resolve to manually apply updates. You are in essence encouraging a subset of your users to actively disable your update mechanism. Considering the regularity that security flaws are found in quicktime this is a dangerous move.
I really believe that quicktime is becoming the real player that was so prevelant several years ago; the nagging, invasive piece of software that ignored basic customer satisfaction in the hopes of strongarming adoption. I used to install quicktime on every machine I used; now it is installed on precisely one machine and only for the purpose of watching movie trailers. As Yahoo offers more and more trailers in WMP friendly format the likely hood that even this one machine will keep quicktime is deminishing. Finding all of the icons I deleted from my desktop, start menu, and quick launch bar restored after an update motivates me all the more.
So at this point I propose Apple decide whether they wish their software to satisfy their customer, or if they would rather just use it as a trojan distribution method to stongarm product adoption. Hopefully it is the former, but at the rate things are going it looks to be the latter and if the anti-customer practice continues I believe you are going to start losing customers. It wasn't WMP that killed real player after all; it was real player.

Thanks Kyn. I was looking through the standard apple contacts area for some sort of feedback mechanism (which is what my post really is) rather than on individual product pages. Since I didn't find any feedback links there, just support links, that is how I ended up here.

  • HT4623 Cannot re-activate my iPad after the OS7 update, nor can I use iTunes to update it. I only the iPad and a PC, fyi.

I had my iPad for some time now and it's been activated and works. Then it auto updated to the new iOS7 and requires me to re-activated it, yet I cannot. This is the message that keeps popping up "Your iPad could not be activated because the activation server is temporarily unavailable. Try connecting you iPad to iTunes to activate it, or try again in a couple of minutes." I've tried countless times and still I get this message, I own a PC and never had downloaded iTunes before, so I finally downloaded it and tried to run it and I get this message "itunes cannot read because was created by a newer version." I never had iTunes before so I don't understand the message, i was going to look it up myself but I figured to post my questions here first. What can I do to activate my iPad? My wifi works great, it was activated before the update, can't use iTunes and I keep getting the same message on my iPad. I hope someone can help me and explain it in baby steps.

    Hey beetlethug,
I found the following troubleshooting steps for when you're experiencing activation issues, I'd give them a shot:
    Perform the following steps:
    Restart the iPhone.
Try another means of reaching the activation server and attempt to activate.
Try connecting to a known-good Wi-Fi network if you're unable to activate using a cellular data connection.
Try connecting to iTunes if you're unable to activate using Wi-Fi.
    Restore the iPhone.
If you receive an alert message when you attempt to activate your iPhone, try to place the iPhone in recovery mode and perform a restore. If you're still unable to complete the setup assistant due to an activation error, contact Apple for assistance.

    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

The Lenovo System Update installed the "Intel Matrix Storage Manager driver 8.9.2.1002" right before the Windows Upgrade got broken. So in the Device Manager under IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers, I choose Intel ICH9M-E/M SATA AHCI Controller, on the Driver Tab, I choose the option "Roll Back Driver" and after rolling back the driver and restarting the OS, now Windows Update is working like a Champ!
    The End!

If your iPad has no front or back cameras, then you have an original iPad 1.
The original iPad 1 cannot be upgraded any further than iOS 5.1.1.
    Sorry.

Is this when updating apps or the iPad's iOS version ? If apps then any apps that your daughter downloaded onto the iPad will be tied to her account, so only her account can download updates to those apps (you would need to delete the apps and buy/download them with your own account to be able to download future updates to them with your account) then she could try getting her password reset via http://iforgot.apple.com
If you are trying to update the iOS version on it and she's left it tied to her iCloud account then with iOS 7 and activation lock only her account will be able to re-activate the iPad. She can try getting her password reset via the above iforgot link.

  • Upgrading to 10.1.3.1 - should I be able to using 'check for updates'

I'm using JDev 10.1.3.04; from Help | Check for Updates menu I checked to see if I could upgrade to 10.1.3.1 but it did not provide this option? Should I be able to upgrade this way? If not how?
Also, secondary question to confirm - will I need to re-install the Tomcat ADF Runtime components? anything else?
    thanks

    Hi,
check for upgrades is used for Service Updates (SU) only. JDeveloper 10.1.3.1 is a new JDeveloper release that also includes upgrades applied to the runtime

  • Should using the software update service be faster for the clients then downloading from apple?

I've got about 25 clients, a mixture of Snow Leopard and Lion systems in the office. I've recently turned on the Software update service on my snow leopard server (10.6.8, mac mini) and have a transparent server setup for the software updates service (dns redirects through the mini). All the machines see the mini and I believe they are pulling updates from it when the client runs their software update. I haven't noticed any real speed differnce though from pulling updates from the mini vs pulling from apple (though I have noticed less internet congestion).
Should this be faster because it's a local network transfer or not?
    Thanks!

I'm a little concerned by the statement:
    dns redirects through the mini
Are you saying you're masking Apple's DNS so that requests for swupdate.apple.com end up on your machine? That's the wrong approach. You should be setting the client's preferences to load from your server instead of Apple's.
In either case, there are three components to running Software Updaate.
1: download the catalog of available updates and compare what's installed to the list to identify which updates are needed
    2: download the appropriate updates
    3: install the updates.
Of the three steps, downloading the catalog is a lightweight process - the index is only a few hundred KB, so the difference in loading this from your server vs. Apple's is minimal. Additionally, this won't make any difference in the amount of time it takes the client to scan for which updates are needed since that's all work performed locally on the machine.
The only step that will be significantly faster is the actual downloading of available updates. These should happen at LAN speeds, rather than your internet connection speed (which is, presumably, slower), but then again, most updates are fairly small - a few megabytes is typical.
However, if no updates are available, or if they're only small, you won't see much difference in time between local and remote. The main advantage of using a local software update server is that you only need to download the updates from Apple once, rather than once per client.

I have two apple ID's, one with all my apps and one with only Mavericks. Will Mavericks update automatically if i'm not logged in to the apple ID I used to download it?

Some things are mixed up here, seemingly...
I seem to have two Apple ID's attached to my e-mail.
An Apple ID is a valid email address, apparently. How can those be "attached to your email"... what email?
Facetime will not verify my e-mail address because it is associated with the other account.
This doesn't make sense. You can register multiple, even non-Apple-ID, email addresses and their aliases with FaceTime.
So, maybe you can explain your problem better - what you want and the steps you've taken and what you have so far. If something doesn't work, please tell the exact error message, too.

Firefox doesn't update plugins like that. The worst you might see is a "nag" from Firefox after an update, about that plugin being outdated; and you can dismiss that "nag" by just closing it.
