Quicktime upgrade stopped avi files playing.

Hi everyone.
Having upgraded to Quicktime 7.1.2, I've noticed certain types of AVI files have stopped working - as in, Quicktime "quits unexpectedly".
Has anyone else experienced this or managed to fix it?
Thanks.

Hi, shropshire_massiv.
Are these AVI files that previously opened in QuickTime or new AVI files?
AVI files are strange animals. It is a "container" format, but the actual CODECs used for the audio and video can vary widely and a file still be considered AVI. When QuickTime cannot play an AVI file, it is usually because of one of the CODECs in which the audio or video is encoded is not one supported by QuickTime.
For complete information about viewing AVIs and DivX files on Mac OS X, including converting such to QuickTime, see my "Playing AVIs and DivX Files" FAQ.
Good luck!

  • HT3775 how do you extend quicktime to open avi files?

I can't open AVI files, says I'm missing a codec. Using a Macbood Pro with Retina display. Are the files just corrupt?

No; there isn't a codec installed to play those specific AVIs, and the required codec may not exist for Mac OS X. Opening them in the free MPEG Streamclip may reveal exactly what is needed.

  • CS4 premiere Imported .avi files play too fast

    Hi Guys
I have a problem. I'm new to CS4 having used Adobe Premiere 6.0 in the past and I have never had this issue when importing .AVI files. What happens is that the file play fine in my windows enviroment and on all my players VLC,DIVX, Windows media player.
But as soon as I import these files into my project at 29.97 frames the video plays really really fast and the sound plays at the normal rate. If I try to change the frame rate the sound also changes. Now here is the strange part. If I convert the files to MP4 they play fine! but the quailty of the video takes a massive hit as you know.
I tried to convert the files to .MOV, MPG (which the program won't play) and most other types of video files but MP4 seems to be the only one that works! When I really want the higher quailty .AVI. Again the files play fine outside of CS4 Premiere and I have already converted them from a Panasonic AVCHD encode format.
Please if anyone has any advise it would be great as I have to get this sorted for a x-mas present!

  • Avi files play audio no video

    I have a newly installed CS5 on a newly built pc (MB = MSI-X58A-G065, 12 GB RAM, CPU = i7-950 QC, 3.06GHz, Graphics Card = MS-N460GTX-HAWK, 14 TB hard drives on Raid0 and Raid1)
I have hundreds of hours of footage that are on external hard drives (edited and original files) that are .avi files. The breakout box on the computer that was used for digitising is a Canopus DV Rx realtime  When I place these .avi files on a CS5 (DVpal sequence settings) timeline, they play back audio with green video. I have checked (using GSpot) that the requisite codecs are installed and they are. I have tried importing files in Adobe Media Encoder and converting/exporting them as uncompressed .avi and .mov files. No joy - still green. I searched Canopus and this perhaps has something to do with Canopus being a 32 bit codec and CS5 being 64bit. I am now planning to install CS4 and use this for all my dvpal footage and use CS5 for editing HD and any new DVpal footage. This is not the ideal workflow solution. Does anybody have any conversion or other suggestions?
    Thanks

You probably do need 64-bit codecs, as I'm assuming these are Canopus HQ files. A quick search suggested that those were only available with Edius 6; if you have that, the dongle in place, and Premiere Pro CS5 concurrently installed, you can decode the files.
But, let's make sure that that's indeed the case: grab MediaInfo and run one of the files through in Text view. Copy and paste the report here.

  • Quicktime not opening .avi files

After I've upgraded to Lion, QuickTime stopped playing .avi movies.
I've Perian codec installed and I've tried to disable it and both with it enabled or disabled QuickTime does not work.
Moreover, I've another problem: after having selected the option "open this file always with VLC" the system is still not working properly since it keeps opening .avi videos with QT.
    Any suggestions?

    Hi,
    Remove Perian and restart.
Remove FlipFor Mac and restart (you are ?).
    Install Perian and restart.
In Perian prefs plane : "desable" Load external subtitle
Work for me ! Good Luck.

  • AVI files play badly with no sound

My system upgraded Quicktime to 7.5 and now I am having this problem. The only file I have is one my dead son made trying to get his infant son to talk. It is so special to me and his wife. I really want to get the sound working again. Thanks so much for any help.

Ive been having the same problem... very frustrating, i know. I took a trip to China and now cant hear any of my videos. Depending on what type of files they are (mine display as AVI but they're mpeg1 files), you may need to convert them. If you google mpeg stream clip, then click on the first one that comes up, you can download that converter for free. I think the format you want to convert to is mpeg2. I havent had a chance to download the program yet, (it was just recommended by the Apple Care people) so that's as far as I can get you. Hope this helps.

  • Problem with .avi files playing as video

I'm trying to use photoshop elements 8 to make and burn a dvd movie, I've added the movie file in avi format and made the disc menu. When I try to play it back it looks all jumpy like its playing a slideshow of stills from my movie and not as a video. I'd apprieciate any help on fixing this if possible if not then oh well. I bought this program intending to this but I'm starting to think I can't...

Expanding on what M.R. said, there is no single codec for movies that have .avi extensions. AVI is a container format, not a specific type of file. An AVI movie may use one of the Indeo codecs (there are at least four that I'm aware of, none of which have been ported to Mac OS X) or one of the various flavors of DivX, among other possibilities. You'll have to find out what codec was used for the movies you want to view to determine what you need. Note that not all codecs for the various .avi movies are available for QuickTime.
If you want to try "hit and miss", you can try the codecs at http://www.divx.com/ and http://www.3ivx.com/ and see if one of them will work for you. You can also give this player M.R. mentioned a try:

Forum Tip: Since you're new here, you've probably not discovered the Search feature available on every Discussions page, but next time, it might save you time (and everyone else from having to answer the same question multiple times) if you search a couple of ways for a topic, both in the relevant forums and in the User Tips Library before you post a question.

  • Quicktime not opening AVI files in Lion.

I just installed OS X Lion but when I try to open any AVI video with Quicktime that reads "The Document <filename> could not be opened. A required codec is not available." I clicked the "Tell Me More" button and I redownloaded the DIVX codec but my files still don't open with quicktime. Is it possible that my codec is not compatible with Quicktime for Lion? But then again the Quicktime application is still the same, it hasn't been updated since Snow Leopard. Is anyone else encountering this?

divx might interfere with perian because perian already covers divx and xvid. Only one solution, not both..
simply uninstall every 3rd party codecs you have installed and go with just one if there are more then one to choose from.
Perian and WMV ( flip4mac ) is all I have on Lion and it plays everything, even downloaded youtube videos ( flvs ), the videos my Samsung mobile phone makes and the strange encoded avis that my sister sends me via email from her vista machine.

  • AVI File Playing video but not audio!

Hey guys I am terribly sorry if this has already been discussed before but I am really getting aggrevated here. When I show the format it says : Generic MPEG-4, 624 x 352, Unknown
MPEG Layer 3, Stereo, 48.000 kHz
Anyone know a codec? I have downloaded everything I have seen that might be a codec and it's kind of scary that none have worked yet. The video is perfect but i hear nothing!

  • How do I get Streamclip AVI files that were saved without first installing Quicktime ALternative 1.81 to play in Premiere Elements 11?

I had Hi-8 "home movie" tapes transferred to mp4 files. To pull many short clips from these long files, I used MPEG Streamclip 1.2. The default save for these short clips was mp4. Either they didn't work in Adobe Premiere Elements 11 or I thought they wouldn't -- I can't recall now -- so I saved each clip as AVI. These AVI files won't play at all in Premier Elements. I Googled for advice and found that I needed to convert to Quicktime Alternate 1.81. I fear this had to be done before I saved the clips, but I didn't realize that. Still, I just now uninstalled Quicktime 7 and installed Quicktime 1.81, then tried converting the AVI clips files, first back to MP4 (didn't work at all in PE11) and then to MOV (only played audio). The AVI files play fine in Windows Media Player and VLC.  All I have are the original files saved as AVI in Streamclip. Is there any way to get these to play and be editable in Premiere Elements 11? I've attached a jpeg capture of a gspot readout for one of these files. THANKS!

Glad that you finally sorted out what you were doing and discovered DV AVI.
In your particular situation Prism would serve your purposes of generating the DV AVI 4:3 since your footage is 640 x 480. However, for others with different footage, the free Prism shortcoming is that it cannot offer DV AVI widescreen 16:9; whereas MPEG Streamclip can do the job for 16:9 as well as 4:3.
QuickTime Alternative 1.8.1 that does come with the MPEG Streamclip's required MPEG2 Playback Component (free) also meets the Premiere Elements requirement for QuickTime installed on computer with Premiere Elements to work. This works in spite of the fact that QuickTime Alternative 1.8.1 is not the latest version of the regular QuickTIme.
In post 2 of the following older thread, I detail the use of Prism (for 4:3) and MPEG Streamclip (for 4:3 and 16:9) to produce the DV AVI file.

Any questions or need clarification, please do not hesitate to ask.
Moving forward, do not use AVCHD (MPEG4 AVC/H.264) or H.264.avi in Premiere Elements. It is not supported.

  • Captured avi file will start to play then stop

After capturing an avi file and trying to review it for editing in the timeline, the scene will start to play, but then after only 2 or 3 seconds the video stops, and the audio track contiues.  This behavior began after I used a registry-cleaning product (PC Health Advisor).  The avi file plays normally with video and sound in Windows Media Player.   What should I do?
