Quicktime vs FCP??

Ok so i'm sure most of you are probably have read many a thread regarding capturing footage, and it seems the general advice is to play around with the different settings until you've got it right...
This is where I am confused...
Most of my footage was shot on a camcorder (Sony - HDV HC9).. and i'm using final cut pro for editing... I am from Australia, and the frame rate is 25fps - so I am assuming the format is PAL.
After several different attempts of at capturing the footage correctly, I thought I had found the right setting through the 'easy setup' window, as follows:
Format: HDV
Rate: 25fps
Use: HDV - 1080i50
The camera communicates with the mac no worries, and seems to capture with no problems also - I can even watch the clips in the viewer of FCP with no noticeable reduction in quality... (even when viewer is expanded to full screen).
However, If I try to open a clip through Quicktime for viewing, the quality is severely compromised with a shadowy, trailing, jumpiness (especially footage of moving objects)...
My question is:
Is it normal for Quicktime to play the clips at a poor quality, when FCP seems to play them beautifully in the viewer? I doubt this....
If it is not normal... has anyone got any ideas as to what i'm doing wrong here??
Thanks in advance...

Hi Ian,
thanks for taking the time to reply...
I tried to follow your instructions but couldn't really get past the first step - I must be using a different version to you....
My quicktime is Version 10.0 (51) - I was under the impression this was the latest???
I really hope its just an issue with the quicktime playback, and not the capturing... Its holding me back a little at this stage because I dont want to capture the other 40 hours of footage only to find out i've done so with the wrong settings?!
But then again you said it looked like I was on the right settings?
Thanks mate

  • AJA DPX to Quicktime and FCP

Does anyone have experience using AJA's DPX to Quicktime Translator?
I am trying to convert a folder full of DPX files into a Quicktime movie sequence. I'd then like to drop that Quicktime into FCP, change a few titles, and then downconvert to SD for a DVD.
Although I can translate the DPX files to MOV Quicktime files, it does one at a time and makes a new MOV for each DPX. I want to know if I can automatically convert a whole folder (our whole 15 minute film) into 1 Quicktime .mov sequence.
    ANY advice will be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Chris

Open the first DPX file with the translator. The translator will find all the rest in the same folder and output them as a Quicktime MOV sequence.

  • Exporting quicktimes from FCP to iDVD?

I am having trouble exporting quicktimes from FCP and bringing them into iDVD.
How do you make Chapter Markers on an export from FCP?

When creating chapter markers, make sure nothing is slected within your timeline (click in a blank space before hitting m). Hit m again and click chapter marker button.
When exporting your sequence, be sure to select Markers > Chapter Markers on the export dialog popup.

  • Squeezed Image in QuickTime from FCP

Although I've come close to finding my specific issue when perusing the discussions, I haven't had much success.
I shot in 16:9 on the XL2. I changed all my settings in FCP before logging and capturing to accommodate this. It looks fine in FCP, including in the Canvas. When I export to QuckTime however, the image is squeezed to fit a 4:3 aspect ratio (meaning, it's in 4:3, with the image pushed in on the sides and everything is stretched vertically). I tried different settings in the export window ("Current Settings", "DV NTSC Anamophic", etc.), but it always comes out the same in the end. Any ideas?
    Thanks!
Power Mac G5 (dual Proc.)   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

When you export you can change the SIZE to reflect 16:9 or you can change the aspect ratio in the Quicktime settings once you start playing it in QT. Apple-J, I think.

  • Sanyo VPC 1000HD H.264 Not Compatible with QuickTime or FCP

    I recently aquired the Sanyo Xacti-VPC 1000HD.
From the results I've observed so far, it's a terrific camera for the price.
My problem, and I know this has been touched in this forum to a limited degree, is that FCP and QuickTime see the MP4 (H.264) files generated by this camera as green screens.
Sanyo suggests that regressing to QuickTime 7.1.6 is the way to go since it supposedly works while the newest update QuickTime 7.2 strangely only creates a green screen... and some user bad language.
I was hoping my upgrade to Leopard (wow 300+ improvements) would cure this issue with FCP 6.0 but noo, green is "in" these days and that's all FCP 6.0 will show me when I import any of those files.
No doubt this situation will be rectified over time and I know this camera is relatively new to the market BUT I would like to find a means of cutting it's output NOW.
I tried the one solution offered in an earlier posting of regressing to QuickTime 7.1.6.
It did sorta work briefly (choppy video playback but no green screen) but later launches of FCP 6.0 just resulted in FCP launch aborts.
Another poster suggested that iMovie '08 w/QT 7.2 handled Sanyo h.264 files okay but apparently iMovie '08 on my MacBookPro (purchased spring 2007) prefers green as well.
I do hope someone can forward a workable solution as I really like this camera.
They have a demo video available at through the Sanyo site of some music performance that proves someone is doing nice editing with the Sanyo VPC-1000HD h.264 files, though I have no idea what technology they are using?
Anyway, any and all responses would be greatly appreciated.

About QTs encoding size the clip is not forced to 4:3 resolution of 320x240, instead it is resized to fit in the boundaries of a 320x240 rectangle. i.e. a 640x268 clip I had, was resized to 320x134.
-it supports non-mod16 resolutions like the one above or 317x240.
    found some info on profiles:
QuickTime only supports up to Main Profile. None of the High Profile settings such as 8x8 intra are supported by Apple. If you try to encode your x264 video with these settings, it will NOT play on QuickTime.
    AVC/H.264 Profiles
The AVC/H.264 standard defines four different Profiles: Baseline, Main, Extended and High Profile (which themselves are subdivided into Levels):
    - Baseline Profile offers I/P-Frames, supports progressive and CAVLC only
    - Extended Profile offers I/P/B/SP/SI-Frames, supports progressive and CAVLC only
    - Main Profile offers I/P/B-Frames, supports progressive and interlaced, and offers CAVLC or CABAC
    - High Profile (aka FRExt) adds to Main Profile: 8x8 intra prediction, custom quants, lossless video coding, more yuv formats (4:4:4...)
Does anyone have more info on the specs of Baseline 1.3?
Google was not my friends on that one.

  • Trouble exporting to quicktime in FCP X

I'm new to FCP X and whenever I export my project to Quicktime and try and play it back on another computer it says something like "this will not play". How do I export it so that it can play back on a computer that does not have FCP X?

Are you trying to play it on another Mac or a PC? Can you remember what settings you made for the export?

  • Quicktime and fcp dont recognize a .mpg file?

im running fcp 5.0.4 with quicktime 7.0.3,
i have a file that i made with a pinnacle system on a pc.
i got it from another one of my hard drives, and it is rendered from the pc as a MPEG type of file.
    the extension is .mpg
when i play it was quicktime 7.0.3, it works fine.
then when i load that same file to fcp 5.0.4 the audio isnt with it.
also when i try to render my file to another extension such as .mp4 for my ipod theres is also no audio.
    whats going on?

You need to get software like MPEG Streamclip to demux the audio and the video and allow them to be seen seperately.
Also, FCP won't deal with mpeg video as it cannot deal with i frame based video. You'll have to convert to QT if you want to use it in FCP.

  • Anyone knows a DVD player for TV which can play QuickTime movies /FCP movie

I am trying to find a DVD player for my television which can play a QuickTime or Final Cut Pro movie which is on a DVD. Do you know one ?
    I have a FCP movie (720 x 576 ) transfed to a DVD ( UDF format ).
I have tryed to play the DVD in many DVD plyers, but they all say " unknown file format "

playing them through AppleTV, can do the trick?
yes and no. The AppleTV is a terribly crippled product. Seems to have been launched with only a few of its capabilities enabled and then it sort of got forgotten.
Before investing in an AppleTV box, be sure to read the product reviews from the MAcintosh magazines and especially the PC magazines. You want to get objective information about this weirdly limited box.

  • Premiere Elements 10 - can't play back imported HD video (from Canon HV30) in Quicktime or FCP

After playing around with the trial version, I eagerly purchased Photoshop Elements 10 Premiere for its ability to edit video from my Sony Cybershot camera (Final Cut Pro would not do this) and for its ability to import video from my Canon HV30 HD camcorder (Final Cut Pro is really fussy on this).
Also liked the option of importing without breaking in to individual scenes.  FCP and iMovie won't do this.
So, after the first import of a tape, I discover that the imported file will NOT play via Quicktime, and when I imported that file into Final Cut Pro, I got the eternal circle icon which lead to a crash.

  • MPEGstreamclip corrupts m2t files translating them into Quicktime for FCP

Recently purchased and tested the Firestore FS-4. Had no problems whatsoever capturing the clips perfectly as m2t files in the FS-4.
But when I run those m2t files through MPEGstreamclip to translate them into Quicktime files so FCP can read them, the clips get corrupted.
The translated QT files seem speeded-up as though I had been recording through my Sony Z1U at high speed / fast forward speed. Please see the file in question, pay close attention to how the cars go by at top speed in the middle of the clip:
    http://www.joric.com/freewayclip.mov
No problems with the m2t files, the problems occur after those files get translated into QT files.
Is MPEG streamclip the problem? Is there any other solution for translating m2t to Quicktime other than MPEGstream clip???
    Desperate to find a solution.
    - Nicholas

So, I take it QT Pro will not handle m2t files? I just downloaded Streamclip today, and it worked just fine for my application (demux mpeg-2 file). If you are desparate, as you say, you could try SnapzPro by Amborsia Software. (I have no relationship with them--other than being a customer.) You can capture the video going to your monitor and save it in any QT format your system can handle. It only works with certain video cards, so make sure you can use it before you purchase--but I'm pretty sure there's a trial version. So why does this Firestore save in m2t format?

  • Quicktime update + fcp update = iDVD problem

recently updated my quicktime to 7.1.5
Now, after exporting clip from FCP 5.1.4, dropping the quicktime file into iDVD5, and burning a DVD, the clips are not able to be played on a consumer DVD player (I tried 3 different ones). The DVD is able to be navigated, but once a button is selected, the menu freezes and there is no clip. However, the DVD works fine on a computer (pc and mac). I have been working with this process for the last 2 years with no problem, and the DVD's were fine even hours before the upgrade.
    Any thoughts are appreciated!

Here I am replying to my own message.
After reading a post regarding this problem on Creative Cow it turns out to be a Zazwerks plug-in. In this case 3d Flag. I use it in Motion.
    The path is Library/Plug-ins/FxPlug/Zaxwerks3DFlag.fxplug
When I remove that last folder, the Zaxwerks one, FCP 5.1.2 loads no problem. Put the plug-in back, and no loading.
There you go. Causes me some problem as I am using the plug-in for a client project in Motion, but I guess we'll just move it in and out until a fix is developed.

  • AVID HDV to Quicktime for FCP

I have a client who's shot and edited in HDV on an AVID (not sure which version but I believe it's newer). He's now trying to export a quicktime so we can load it into Final Cut to export to HDCam through our AJA Kona card.
He's used the AVID DNxHD Codec to export the files. I've imported the files into Final Cut and during the render on a timeline to an AJA codec, I am always getting "General Error". I tried exporting the same files straight from Quicktime to an Uncompressed 8-bit codec but the files fail there as well.
He exported the files to his local hard drive and then copied them to a firewire drive. I've copied the files to my local disk before trying to render or export.
Has anyone had any experience with this? Should he be using a different codec during the export? Could the actual files be the problem? Thanks for any help.

Gotta recapture. You can't just take files from another editing platform and expect them to work perfectly fine in another. While the Avid codecs MIGHT work, often they don't...like now. So if you offline with Avid and online and output on FCP, you need to export the OMF from the Avid, then use Automatic Duck Pro Importer to import that OMF into FCP, then recapture from the source tapes.

  • Importing Quicktimes into FCP

I am importing an uncompressed quicktime movie done on FCP version 5 at 24 FPS into version 4.5 ,I brought it into a sequence 29.97 rendered out fine but found the picture stretched. Is there a setting I have to select in quicktime before importing it into FCP or is there a setting I forgot in FCP.

Is the image stretched virtically? People very thin? Then it is ANAMORPHIC footage. In the Browser scroll to the right and look for the ANAMORPHIC column. Put a check mark in that column next to the clip and you should be set.

    Any hlp would be great
