Quicktime vs preview in finder

I have been reading lots of posts about avi files and have the following question unanswered.
Why can the finder (in column view) show a file with .avi extension but QT 7.1.x won't play it?
Macbook Pro C2D   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

AVI is a supported file type in QuickTime (as per http://www.apple.com/quicktime/player/specs.html) so QT should be able to play an AVI file.
If you are having an issue with file, it may be isolated to that specific file.

  • No prores422 Quicktime icon preview in finder OSX Mavericks

I upgraded to Mavericks osx 10.9 and now I no longer get a thumbnail preview on my prores quicktime files in the finder o. I do get a preview with any other type of quicktime codecs the only affected files are prores files. I shoot a lot on the blackmagic cinema camera and it's not good for me just to see a Q on those thumbnails. I'm a Final Cut Pro X user so I have the proper codecs to view the files. I have tried the view options and it does not affect Prores files. I've also downloaded the latest codecs from apple. So I want to know I'm I the only person this is happening to? I'm thinking I may need to reinstall mavericks but before I do that I need to know if anyone else is experiencing this? I have attached a screen capture to illustrate what I'm talking about. Quicklook does still work on the prores files but I need that thumbnail.

I've tried reinstalling Mavericks and I'm still having this issue. I'm considering wiping my drive and going back to Mountain lion. Qucktime player in Mavericks seems to suck. I'm having several other issues playing back older quictime files. Most play in Quicktime 7 but a lot have no quicklook previews. The sheer volume of prores files I shoot makes this extremely inconvenient for me. How can Apple not support their own Codec????

  • Disable / Turn off Thumbnail / Icon Preview in Finder?

Can't find any new/recent posts to solve this issue. I want to disable/turn-off the little icon preview in finder.
I have to access a lot of images on a server at work. Image files(jpeg, eps, tiff, psd, ai, ect) that are typically 50MB and higher. So you can only imagine the amount of lag I get and the time I waste every time I click on a folder in list view.
Is there any way to disable it? Just have it show a standard icon file type instead of it loading 100+ 8MB images in little tiny icons?
I've already tried the View -> Show View Options -> unchecked 'Show icon preview' and applied it as 'Use as default'
Its turn off for all folders but it is still loading the mini icon preview.

  • No Preview in Finder anymore

I could keep small clips of video and use Preview from Finder to see what they were. Now I only hear the audio and no video is played. Regardless, of formart. mov., .wmv, mpg, or .avi I don't see anything. It just started abruptly.

I can preview the same clips. Even when I import them into the separate account. All I get is a gray screen with audio. If I double click it with QuickTime as the default it plays fine. Either highlighting them and hitting the preview button at the top of the Finder window or clicking the arrow when the cursor hovers over the click just gives me audio and a gray screen.

  • Can you Choose a Particular Frame for Quicktime Icon Preview?

Is it possible to choose a specific frame for a Quicktime file icon preview? A lot of movies start out with a black frame and the icon preview in Finder is therefore a black square. I would like to be able to choose the frame to use for the preview.

I don't know if this is possible (ask in the QT forum) but you can trim the movie with QT player to get rid of the black frame at the beginning of the movie. you can also take a screenshot of any frame you want and apply it as a custom icon to the movie.

  • Stop M2V files from previewing in finder

Is there any way to stop M2V files from previewing in finder? It either always crashes the finder or it just sits there forever(especially if it is a long video) with the cursor spinning until it can preview it.
Also when I try to locate these type of files when DVD Studio cant find them, it crashes DVD studio.

column view is the way I prefer view Finder and that is where it shows a preview of the video in the last collumn to the right. I know that you can turn off this preview from showing on all collumns, but i find it so usefull for everything else.
I remember a couple of years back when it would'nt even try to preview the file it would just show an image maybe the first frame. this was back in the days of DVD Studio 1.0. I'm pretty sure that Quicktime wouldn't open the files either back then either. there needs to be a way to tell OS X not to preview certain file types.
I wouldn't care except it can take up to 15 to 20 min for OSx to preview the file and in that time you cant use the the finder at all. talk about losing your day. most of the time now it just crashed the finder.
I'm still using panther 10.39. is this my problem? does Tiger have the same issues?

  • No video previews in finder

    Hello,
I have snow leopard 10.6.8 and my imac is a few weeks old. I cannot preview video files in finder by hitting the spacebar, whereas I could do this before. Apart from a .mov file I have, which works fine, nothing else (.avi etc) works. These files, btw, work fine when I open them in VLC or quicktime. All other (image or text) files allow me to preview in Finder. After browsing the internet for tips, I tried previewing these files from a different user account, with no luck. I updated all software, tried defaulting all file formats to open in Quicktime (i had vlc on default before), no luck either.
    Any ideas?

Nevermind, I solved it by installing Perian. This always happens to me, after two weeks of trying to figure something out I finally ask for help and then solve it anyway within minutes. Can't find how to delete my question though but it might be of use to others in the future.

  • How do I drag simultaneously mulitple images viewed in Preview to Finder. I know how to do one image at a time by dragging

How do I drag multiple images simultaneously from Preview to Finder. I know how to do one at a time. However since I typically shoot at 12 frames per second, sports photography, I have a lot of images to move of one athlete while in motion.

    (A personal footnote):
Why are you using Preview at all? I hardly ever use it for anything, finding it very limited.
I am only an amateur photographer, but I much prefer GraphicConverter which, for example, in batch mode would do much of what you ask.
IMO it is probably the best shareware application ever written for the Mac.
If you don't know it, give it a try:

  • Preview in Finder not loading. All my images have the Preview icon instead!

    Hi,
anybody experiencing the same problem as me?
All of a sudden my preview in finder doesn't work and all my picture preview icons became the "Preview" icon itself!
Here is how it looks like.. : http://img146.imageshack.us/img146/3414/picture37.png
Does anybody know how to get it back to normal because it is such a hassle to click on every single photo to find the picture that I want!
    Thanks!

Sounds like your LaunchServices database has gotten corrupted. Launch the Terminal app in /Applications/Utilities/, copy & paste this one-line command into it, hit the return key, and restart.
*/System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/LaunchS ervices.framework/Versions/A/Support/lsregister -kill -r -domain local -domain system -domain user*
    That should fix the problem.

  • Cover Flow preview in Finder fails to work

    Hello,
I updated recently to  OS X Mavericks, and since i updated there have been problems in the Preview (Cover Flow preview in Finder.
When i open a folder and scroll down items, sometime there are 10 images and in cover flow shows only half and the other half are like not previewing them as they don’t exist in the folder so when i click on list view then gives me just file names i can see full list and open all files big, but the Cover flow is failing to work and desplay preview images - not previewing the correct fles mix, image names, for example i click on file 1 and it shows file 2… when i delate an image from the folder it just keeps a ghost image there so you don’t know if its actually erased, but again when u open in list view mode its ok, or you constantly have to close and reopen the folder to refresh the view in cover flow, so 100% Cover Flow fails to work since the update.
can you tell me what is wrong?how can i fix it please as i really need this feature?
    Thank you

    Does QuickLook work?
Select the File and tap the space bar?
    Regards
    TD

  • Trouble with preview in finder

    hey All!
Here is my problem, I have 10.4.2 installed on my IMac and my powerbook, and quick time pro for both. The problem is, that when I view movies in finder on my IMac, it shows up as a preview in finder. This however is not the case on my powerbook, where the round ball just keeps spinning ending up with no preview. I have installed VLC on both computers as well, but no matter what I do I cant get it working on my powerbook! Plz help!
    Thanks in advance
    Ehlerz

Open the Audio MIDI Setup on the offending computer (the Powerbook).
Set the Audio Output Format to 44100Hz. Quit and restart.
You should also set up a new user account (great for testing things) and try the offending file again.

  • PS CS3 Preview in finder

In PS CS3 of a layered PS file preview in finder window don't match final PS file. One of the layers that had a selection only shows up.

Yes I resaved them. Strange even a flattened file shows a designe element I added. These all started out as a .zip tiff file that I then worked on and resaved in PS CS3 and saved as .psd. I irst noticed it when I Imported them into Aperture. The only one that show ok is one that was converted from tif to PS and never had any layers added. Thank you all for your attentions so far. I did a test on some other files that wern't emailed to me and added some layes and selections in the layers and they are alright.

  • No .dng Preview in Finder or Quick Look; File Dimensions 0x0.

Can see Canon .CR2 raw file preview in finder and quick look. Can see file dimensions.
Cannot see same files converted in Lightroom to DNGs. File dimensions listed as 0x0.
CAN see older DNG files processed exactly the same way. All files stored in an external WD 2TB drive. Just for fun dragged an old DNG file to that drive and the preview works fine.
    OSX 10.9
    Latest Adobe Camera Raw
    Latest Adobe Lightroom
Rebooted, emptied caches, reindexed Spotlight, and on and on and on.
Apple bug? Adobe bug? Or another situation where they are blaming each other and the professionals relying on their products enjoy yet more frustration. Don't get me started on the color management fiasco of not so long ago...
    Thanks!
    Jon

Here is the situation: I use Spotlight to search, and
find a bunch of things I want to look at, including
some PDF files, which I click to open in Preview.
Now, I want to send some of these documents, or at
least one of them, as an email attachment using
    Mail.app. What to do?
One way to do this is to use the "Mail PDF" item in the PDF Services group of items under the PDF "menu" in the Print Dialog. For multiple documents, this would mean bringing up the dialog ffor each document, so maybe that is not practical.
You could also create a workflow item using Automator. I am not that familiar with Automator, and you'll have much better luck in the Automator forum, but a quick glance shows an "Add Attachment to Front Message" action as part of Mail.
    Hope this helps.

  • Weird dots in QuickTime and Preview.  Possibly ColoeSync  Need Help

I have had for some time now these weird spots in QuickTime and Preview files when viewing them only. They only appear when looking at them with these apps. Viewing pictures in PhotoShop don't recreate the problem. I suspect it's related to ColorSync, but I have no idea what to try. I removed the profiles from My Drive/Library/ColorSync/Profiles and rebooted. The problem is still there.
Printing or viewing these files in other apps don't exhibit the problem so the files are fine. It's just displaying them with QuickTime & Preview that cause problems.
I'm so sick of this and would really like to get it fixed. Could anyone please offer a suggestion? I'd be extremely appreciative. Thanks in advance!
Oh yeah, You can download a small screenshot to actually see it here:

The desktop image is fine, taken from the exact same pool of jpg photos.  However, as soon as the slide show screen saver comes on, the images are scrambled.  What is it about the apple screen saver algorithm that scrambles the pics?
