QuickTime vs. TIFF

What can I do to prevent QuickTime from interfering with TIFF?

Here is what I found GENERALLY works in Windows XP Pro.
1. "Edit" and save the MIME types in Windows (even if they seem to be correct). 2. Go into Quicktime Player > Edit > Preferences > Quicktime Preferences.
3. Go to the File Types Tab and edit the File Types.
4. Go to Browser tab and edit the MIME types there as well.
It will GENERALLY work in the browser again. If I still have a problem I go to the MIME types in Windows again and double check. In general I find those setting are showing correctly but QuickTime has done some sort of hidden hijack of the settings. If I really run into problems I may resort to registry editing, but generally I will uninstall QuickTime and install QuickTime Alternative because it is easier. QT Alternative can be buggy though.
I continually run into these issues with QuickTime - for years. From my perspective the way it automatically Hijacks MIME types is really annoying. Not to mention the fact that Apple felt the need to "manage" MIME types within Quicktime instead of letting the OS do it as is good programming practice and does it in multiple places. I can understand offering to "re-associate" file types when you run an application - but not the outright hijacking that is done by QuickTime. I honestly have always had a great dislike for RealMedia and Quicktime for just these practices. Not to mention the general performance issues on the Windows platform.

  • Is there something wrong with Quicktime and TIFFs?

I've been trying to see with Firefox the TIFF images of patents at the USPTO site and I can't. The browser advises me to install the missing plug-in although Quicktime is already installed. I wonder if it's a Quicktime problem or a Firefox one. I have a reason to believe there's something wrong with Quicktime though. Read on to see why.
On my system the *TIFF Image Test* (from mozdev.org) fails although I have the latest Quicktime plug-in. This happens regardless of the browser I use, all latest editions: Firefox 3.6, Internet Explorer 8 (both 32-bit and 64-bit versions) and Chrome 4. All seem to fail to recognize the presence of the installed Quicktime although my Windows OS is set to open TIF/TIFF files with Quicktime/PictureViewer.
Running about:plugins on my Firefox does show the Quicktime plug-in for a variety of files but NOT for opening embedded TIF/TIFFs. Also, when I open *Tools -> Options -> Applications* I see there is no registered handler for TIF/TIFFs. They don't appear on the known Content Types.
Is there something wrong with the installation of Quicktime? I can see USPTO TIFF images only with Safari which appears to have an integrated TIFF viewer. I haven't tried to install alternatiff or any other alternative TIFF handler.

    DocBAZ,
I tried to visit the "test site" above. I'm not really sure it's an embedded image on a HTML page because I get a Firefox download window and a suggestion to open it with PictureViewer, which is the expected behavior for downloadable images. The mozdev.org test page on the other hand had an embedded image that needed the plugin, which is what is bugging me.
If you want a real complex test page with both an embedded TIFF and a downloadable one check AlternaTIFF here: http://www.alternatiff.com/testpage.html
Indeed the changes I made were in the QuickTime preferences, not PictureViewer which has no settings to change. And yes, Windows 7 has a unique place to deal with file types and MIME settings.
You will find some interesting suggestions over the problem at SuperUser.

  • Quicktime and tiff files

I use a windows 7 laptop. In the course of my week I view many tiff files. I have the default program for tiff set as windows photo viewer. Nonetheless, Quicktime always comes up. I wouldn't mind, but I cannot view all pages, and sometimes nothing shows. So each week I have to remove Quicktime in order to view my tiff files in Windows Photo Viewer. Very, very, frustrating. Any thoughts?

    Excellent news, Bulent!
I hope Quicktime does not, later, try to take over again.
Good point ... next time you do a QuickTime update directly from the Website:
    http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/
... very near the end of the install, there should be a screen with a "Configure File/MIME types" button. Click the button, go to the MIME types, and make sure that that TIFF image entry is unchecked. That should avoid the problem in future.

  • IPhoto '08, Microsoft Word 2004 and an error: QuickTime and TIFF

    Hi,
When I drag and drop photos from iPhoto into Word, I get the following error:
QuickTime and a TIFF (decompressor) are required to see the picture.
The image is placemarked with a black border with the error message in the center. iPhoto indicates that the picture is JPEG. I have also discovered that dragging the picture to the desktop and then into Word works fine.
I checked the console log and found the following:

    Hi
This sounds like a problem that's been discussed many times. If you use the Search button (select more options) and change the 'Restrict by Date Range' to something like 'Last Year' you should find something? You might want to read these:

  • Help! - Quicktime Crashing on viewing large (10,000px+) tiffs

I'm having some trouble with QuickTime displaying tiff image files.
My files are quite large, over 10,000px in height and 220MB in size. I am able to open the images in QuickTime Picture Viewer, but when I attempt to open them in QuickTime Player, QuickTime goes non responsive and the only way to stop the process is through the task manager.
The images were created in Photoshop CS2, but have been flattened and contain no layers or alpha channels. I have several large tiffs that all create the same behavior, so it's not just a single freaky file.
I have recreated this error on three separate machines, all running Windows XP. Each of the three has a different graphics card (with updated drivers). Two of the machines have nVidia cards (7600GS and 7800 GTS), and one has an ATI card (ATI Mobility x600). This leads me to believe it is not a hardware issue.
I have updated QuickTime to the latest version from the Apple site, and I have tried disabling DirectDraw by choosing 'Safe Mode, GDI only' from the advanced QuickTime preferences menu.
Has anyone seen this before? I discovered the problem because I use a digital asset management program called iView Media Pro. iView relies on QuickTime to display its media. I work for a photographer, and this is keeping me from implementing some major workflow improvements in place.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Apple telephone support has been fairly unhelpful to this point.
    Thanks much,
    Andris

On all computers involved, I can either open the files in both iView and QuickTime Player or in neither.
Three machines in the studio, one HP laptop (with an ATI video card) and two Velocity Micro desktops with (nVidia video cards) can open the problem images in neither iView nor QuickTime Player.
Two machines I have access to outside the studio can open the file in both iView and QuickTime Player. One is a MacBook Pro and the other a Dell laptop with an Intel graphics card.
Since iView depends on QuickTime, my thought is that this has more to do with QuickTime than with iView. Obviously there is something else at play here...but I'm not sure what.
The only thing I can see in common between the three studio machines is their virus software: Panda Platinum 2006. I have tried uninstalling QuickTime, restarting, disabling the antivirus software, and installing QuickTime from scratch. This did not solve the problem.
I have also tried disabling the antivirus software when trying to open the tiff, but this also did not solve the problem.

  • PP CS4 - No MPEG export?

I have Windows XP SP3, 2 gigs of RAM, 3.5Ghz processor,
    NVIDIA 8800GTS video.
I don't have any issues regarding error messages, etc.
First, I downloaded Adobe Premiere Pro CS4 trial.
I did a full install with every option selected (installed Bridge, OnLocation, Encore, Device Central, Media Encoder, etc.) and all sub-options.
I can open (import, etc.) movies of various formats (.avi, .flv, .wmv) which will all play fine in the Previewer windows and will accept Effects applied, etc.
However, there is no menu choice to export to MPEG.
In the PP CS4 Help it says simply to choose File>Export>Media... and then select one of the various MPEG formats (1, 2, etc.)
    I have no MPEG choices.
Of course "Save As" will only give you the *.prproj" choice.
Sorry for the long list, but here are my choices for "Export":
    Audio Interchange File Format
    Microsoft AVI
    Windows Bitmap
    Animated GIF
    GIF
    P2 Movie
    QuickTime
    Targa
    TIFF
    Uncompressed Microsoft AVI
    Windows Waveform
    Audio Only
    FLV/F4V
    H.264
    H.264 Blu-ray
    Windows Media
Any help would definitely be appreciated. Thanks in advance.
    Xyso

Aha, that explains everything. Thank you Ann.
Unfortunately for me, I downloaded the trial SPECIFICALLY to try exporting video to MPEG 1 in order to burn Video CDs (VCD) heh heh
Thank you so much for your help.

  • Dragging iPhoto images into Powerpoint

When I drag photos from iPhoto 6.0.5 into a Powerpoint X slide, I get a blank white box with the message that "Quicktime and TIFF (uncompressed) decompressor is needed to see this picture."
This was not a problem with iPhoto 5.
Has anyone come up with a drag-and-drop solution for this? I know I can get around it by exporting to the desktop and then dragging into Powerpoint, but since I do this hundreds of times per week I would rather be able to drag-and-drop directly.

I have the same problem for Word. I found that I can go into edit mode in iphoto and then the thumbs will drag and drop like they used to...
The same thing happened with my old G4 using iphoto 6

  • Exporting in mpeg?

I am using Premiere 4. I am exporting clips to use in a software called Proshow Gold it does not like quicktime or .mov file but likes mpeg files. I thought a few weeks ago I had exported in mpeg but now when I go to export files or clips I do not see that as an option.
I know this is probably an easy fix can anyone help or ideas?
    Your help would be appreciated?
    thank you in advance

    Steve,
    Thank you.
I actually tried file, export , movie  before posting, but mpeg was not an option on the file types here are the options I have:
    Audio Interchange File format
    Windows Bitmap
    filmstrip
    Animated Gif
    Gif
    Jpeg
    Quicktime
    Targa
    Tiff
    Uncompressed MS AVI
    MS AVI
    DV Ms Avi
I know I could export in quicktime then convert it to mpeg but I am trying to eliminate a step as I ahve over 20 different files to do.
Am I missing something is one fo the above considered mpeg and avi is too large to use in other program?
    Sorry but I am confused?

I'm trying to get the following to work:

So the CE is hitting the webserver (although not shown in the apache log files).
But the 192.168.0.2 you see with the tcpdump is listed every 60 sec, and this is the is-a-live test of the CE.....
You don't see an entry in tcpdump or in the apache log files when hitting the server with a browser.

  • Quicktime grabs Vista file associations in Internet Explorer (TIFF etc.)

    Hi all,
I have a problem with Quicktime 7.6 and Internet Explorer 8 on Windows Vista - maybe someone here knows a fix? I've tried everything I could think of ... to no avail... Many thanks in advance for any hints!
    Trouble is:
After installing iTunes 8.1.1 including QuickTime, whenever opening a TIF image in Internet Explorer 8, QuickTime will display it. I don't want that, I need to set a different application to open TIF files or to have Internet Explorer ask me whether I want the file displayed or download it.
This is extremely annoying, since our HTTP scan server (HP) sends its files as TIF directly to the browser, so there is now link to the file to right-click on and chose "save as". Before installing iTunes/QuickTime, Internet Explorer asked me where I wanted to have the file saved - now it just displays the image using the QuickTime plugin and I can't save it anymore.
I tried to right-click the image in the QuickTime display, it tells me I would need to buy QT Pro to save a copy.
I opened QuickTime's options and disabled TIF and TIFF both in file types and in MIME types.
Result: nothing; still IE8 displays TIF with QuickTime.
I right-clicked on a TIF file on the harddisk, chose properties and changed the program with which to open the file (first Acrobat, than tried Windows image viewer, then Photoshop...).
Result: nothing; still IE8 displays TIF with QuickTime. (When I open a TIF from a folder on the harddisk, Vista opens it in the program I specified - but any TIF within IE8 is still displayed with QuickTime).
I opened Vista's control panel and set the standards for file type TIF/TIFF to a different programm.
Result: no change, within IE8 any TIF image is still displayed using the QT plugin.
I used Internet Explorer's Add-On settings to disable the QuickTime plugin.
Result: any TIF image is displayed as a red X, it doesn't ask me what to do with it or where to save it.
    What can I do?
Any help would be much appreciated.
    Many thanks in advance!
    Best wishes
    Frank

I used this link for tiff http://www.nrl.navy.mil/content.php?P=IMAGES
QT was opening the tiff files. When going into the QT control panel Browser>Mime settings>Images-Still image files I was able to uncheck tiff, which held. I was also able to uncheck all the file types under File Types tab(Images-Still image files) in the QT control panel. However the preference would not hold. Went into Start>Set Program Access and Defaults that also was of no help.
The only way I was able to get QT to release the tiff's from the website I posted was to go into the Folder Options control panel for File Types and change the tif & tiff from QT picture viewer to windows picture and fax viewer.
So not sure why the QT control panel will not respond, there are other file types in the Folder options control panel on this computer other than tiff's that are still associated to QT, but didn't try changing them, perhaps that needs to be done?
Good post I didn't realize this before reading your post, if I come across anything further I'll post back.

  • Downloadable .tiff files open in quicktime, not as an image file: using mac

    I am using a Mac 10.6.3 and
    Ffirefox ver: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; U; Intel Mac OS X 10.6; en-US; rv:1.9.2) Gecko/20100115 Firefox/3.6
downloadable .tiff files open in firefox quicktime, not as image files, nor do they let me choose how to download or where to save or as what type of file.

    Hello andrea,
You can tell Firefox to ask you where to store your download files by changing the Firefox "Preferences". You can get the instructions on how to do it in this article: [[Downloads window]].
I would advise you to download tiff files as tiff files only otherwise they may become unviewable.
Now, to open your tiff files as images, you can change the settings on your Mac computer as follows:
#Select the tiff image that you downloaded.
#Right click on it and select "Get info"
#A windows will pop up. In this window, select the "Open with" item. Under this item, select "Preview" or any other image viewer application that you want to use.
#Next, click on the "Change All.." button. Click "Continue" in the message that is shown.
That's all. Now, your tiff files will open as images in the application that you just selected
Hope this solves your problem !

  • Tiff (or tif) file created in Photoshop is not displaying in Firefox 2 or 3 with Quicktime plugin

I embedded a tiff file that was created in Photoshop but it is not displaying in Quicktime/Firefox.
It works in other browsers but not Firefox 2 or 3. And another point is that if the Tiff file is created in any other graphics application then it works!
It leads me to think that Photoshop might be adding some metadata to the file that Quicktime/Firefox is not liking.
Any ideas on what might fix this?

There are different types of TIF files with different kinds of contents (compression schemes, channels, bit depths, etc). It is no surprise that you might get different results with different browsers/plugins.
What kind of TIFF are you using? Why are you not using a more standard web image format that does not require the overhead and hassle of an optional plugin?

  • QuickTime file associations, TIFF in particular

I have a user who needs to open TIFF's in a certain program but QT keeps hijacking the file association in IE6 on Windows XP sp2. When he opens a TIFF file via IE6 or MS Word (impeded in IE6) it opens in QuickTime which can only view the 1st page of a TIFF (seriously apple?). This used to be a common problem and since no one could make QuickTime cooperate we would simply install eiStream Imaging for Windows (now Global360) and it would erase the file associations for TIFF in IE and instead present an option to save or open.
That's all changed now. I can install this other program it will take back the file associations that QuckTime keeps swiping, but immediately after the user reboots QuickTime has stolen them again.
The next step when the user is available will be going in to the registry and cleaning out HKEYCLASSESROOT\QuickTime\ but I have a feeling QT will rebuild at the next startup as this has been the trend.
I have disabled TIFF in the QT preferences yet the association remains, I have changed the file associations via Folder options>File Types yet the associations remain. I reinstall QT, now it won't leave the system tray, AND the file associations remain despite settings in QT pref. I remove QT startup with windows from the registry yet the instant a user opens QT it hijacks that back and is sitting in the SysTray after the next reboot.

Try asking in the QT for Windows area vs. here as a start. Though IIRC QT for Windows has the ability to set or unselect the associations in the preferences.

  • Opening a .tif or .tiff file in Internet Explorer using Quicktime in Window

How do you open a .tif or .tiff file within Internet Explorer using Quicktime in Windows 7?
    Thank you for looking.

Open the QuickTime control panel to Browser>Mime Settings>Images-Still image files and select TIFF image then click-ok apply ok. You want to do this without the browser running. If this doesn't help you may want to post a website with the TIFF, for myself or others to try
