QuickTime will not open (Windows 7 64-bit OS)

I have the latest version of iTunes with QuickTime installed. I have completely uninstalled and reinstalled iTunes with QuickTime several times. iTunes opens fine, but QuickTime will not open. It used to open fine about a month ago, but will not now, I have no idea what changed on my computer to cause this problem. When I try to open it, the Quicktime icon appears at the bottom of the screen in the Windows 7 taskbar, but no window opens on the screen. I have a Windows 7 64-bit operating system. Has anyone seen this before or had any success correcting this problem? Thank you, Josh

When I try to open it, the Quicktime icon appears at the bottom of the screen in the Windows 7 taskbar, but no window opens on the screen
That's consistent with a QuickTime display preference gone bad, josh.
If that's what is afoot, rebuilding the QuickTime preferences can help, although it can be a bit of a trial to track them down on the 64-bit systems.
Close any of the QuickTime Player buttons that are currently in your taskbar.
Now we need to change some view settings on the PC. (The preferences are kept in hidden folders.)
In your Start menu, open Computer.
In your Organise menu, select Folder Options.
In the View tab, make sure that "Show hidden files and folders" is selected.
Click OK.
Next we'll navigate to your AppData folder.
In Computer, open Local Disk C:\ or whichever drive your user documents are stored on.
Open the "Users" folder.
Open the folder with the name of the Windows User account in which the QuickTime Player isn't displaying properly.
Open the "AppData" folder.
Now the hunt for the QuickTime preferences begins.
Open the "Roaming" folder.
Open the "Apple Computer" folder.
Do you see a "QuickTime" folder in there? If so, drag that out onto the Desktop. Now try launching the QuickTime Player.
*If there was no QuickTime folder in \Roaming\Apple Computer\, or if the QuickTime Player still isn't displaying properly*
Quit any QuickTime player buttons in the Taskbar.
Go back into the "AppData" folder.
Open the "Local" folder.
Open the "Apple Computer" folder.
Do you see a "QuickTime" folder in there? If so, drag that out onto the Desktop. Now try launching the QuickTime Player.
*If there was no QuickTime folder in \Local\Apple Computer\, or if the QuickTime Player still isn't displaying properly*
Quit any QuickTime player buttons in the Taskbar.
Go back into the "AppData" folder.
Open the "LocalLow" folder.
Open the "Apple Computer" folder.
Do you see a "QuickTime" folder in there? If so, drag that out onto the Desktop. Now try launching the QuickTime Player.
Any of those measures help with the display problem?

Actually, wasting bandwidth is a waste of people's resources who offer to help here. You posted and got answers to your post. What you thought of that would be better (for you) was posting it in every corner of AD that might get read would give you a response 30 nanoseconds faster than posting once. So read your answer and enjoy your computer.
All you need to do is post in the right forum section, and wait for a response. It will come unless nobody has a clue which rarely occurs.

  • Itunes or quicktime will not open

I just purchased ipod and I downloaded itunes. at first it worked correctly, then it stopped opening and quicktime will not open either. I have tried re-installing numerous times to no avail. All the error message says unknown error send or don't send to MS. I am starting to get frustrated over this. It has taken up so much time. CAN SOMEONE PLEASE HELP ME????

Hi Dave. Many thanks for your response. I uninstalled iTunes and Quicktime and then reinstalled them and now I can open iTunes. I now have another problem. The music that is on my iPhone that was imported from my iTunes prior to resetting my Mac seems to be unavailable for me to play. It doesn't show up on my iPhone when it's not connected. But when I connect it to my Mac all the songs show up under the music tab of my iPhone but they are all light grey and when I click one an exclamation mark appears next to it. I've tried authorizing my account but that doesn't do anything.
If you have any idea what the problem could be I would really gratefull.

Clicking on an e-mail address will NOT open Windows Live Mail. Windows Live mail is already set as my default e-mail program.

Sorry you're having this problem. I think it was previously reported only by Windows XP users.
When you reinstall, were you making Firefox your default browser? Some users have reported that ''not'' making Firefox the default browser was an effective workaround.
However, you may have success with this approach, suggested by a user in another thread, which appears to more thoroughly update the Windows registry:
    # Open Adobe Reader / Acrobat
    # Edit->Preferences
    # In the Categories column click 'General'
    # Near the bottom of the page click the button marked 'Select Default PDF Handler'
    # In the dialog, select 'Adobe Reader XI' (or Adobe Acrobat, as the case may be) and click 'Apply'
    # A Windows Configuration screen will appear. Allow it to do its stuff (takes a few minutes), then restart your computer when prompted.
Does that resolve the issue for you?

I'm not a "Cloud" member. I just upgraded to Lightroom 6 from Lightroom 5. All was working well yesterday. Today Lightroom will not open (Windows 7). I see the logo photo over my Lightroom platform but nothing loads and I see "Lightroom not responding." I checked the catalogs and see that lrcat-Journal and lrcat-Lock have been created every time I try to open. I have a backup from the first day I upgraded, but Lightroom doesn't want to access it. Should I reinstall?

Well, is the catalogue (and the folder it is in) writable? Have you actually checked the permissions? Lightroom won't be spitting out the error just to tick you off, and - computer wizard or not - this sounds very much like something you'll have to fix at the OS level: it's probably nothing to do with Lightroom or those funny lads at Adobe.

  • Ipod will not turn on, itunes will not open, window says ipod is in recovery mode and needsto be restored

ipod will not turn on, itunes will not open, window pops up says ipod is in recovery mode and needs to be restored. what do i do now?

You restore the iPod via iTunes. Don't plug the iPod in. Open up iTunes and then plug it in and then try restoring, if it fails to restore a few times, keep trying. I do it on a daily basis, you're using an Apple product, remember...
EDIT: Do it from another computer if all else fails.

  • Itunes will not open --windows 7 64bit

ok so, itunes refuses to open. i went to the support page and did EVERYTHING it says to do. update drivers, disable virus protection, add a new user, try safe mode, etc etc. STILL WILL NOT OPEN. uninstalled everything, reinstalled everything about 5 times... nothing. can someone please help me fix this?

Yeah I tried that as well, the other download that actually says "iTunes 64-Bit installer." Thats a load of crap. Doesn't do anything different than the other installer. Like I said in a couple of my posts, I think the problem is that iTunes is a 32 Bit program and my version of windows on this computer is 64 bit. Doesnt work properly. I was actually on vacation and left it running for about an hour and I saw that iTunes was opened. I went to do things within iTunes and it crashed no more than 5 seconds into it. iTunes runs perfectly fine on my windows 7 32bit computer but on this windows 7 64 bit, nothing but problems. Can't play videos, can't play a song, can't even edit options. And everything on their website they say to do does nothing. Especially to disable all of my startup programs, makes a lot of my programs run very poorly or not at all and I'm not going through all of that trouble for iTunes. I just wanted to be able to update my iPod while i was on vacation, but unfortunately I cant. I'll stick to running it on my other computer because obviously no one from apple has a solution to this problem and obviously I am not the only one having it.

  • Quicktime Will Not Open Caption Files??

I tried to locate this specific issue in the dicussion forums, but did not find sometihng similar or an answer. My apolgies in advance if I overlooked a similar post.
I have videos that I have captioned that will not open correctly on other computers (in QT), besides my own. I have added captions as a text track and made adjustments to their positioning on the screen. When others open the QT files from another computer, you can either just see the text track and the movie is a white box, or QT will simply not open the file stating this is not in a format that QT understands.
I noticed there is additional codecs listed with these problematic files, specifically VP6F, MPEG Layer 3, Text codecs.
My question what is the best way for me to remove or change the codec so anyone with QT can view? I have a workaround where I place the captioned QT into Screenflow and re-export, which removes the text codec and will work fine on other computers. I just want to see if there is something I can do in QT/QT Pro to avoid this workaround.
    Thank you in advance.

Your files are MPEG-2 and you need additional software to view them in QuickTime:

and a different application than iMovie to convert the audio portion:

  • ...QUICKTIME will not open it's own files....

...it states that the files are the "THE MOVIE COULD NOT BE OPENED. THE FILE IS NOT A MOVIE FILE." Prior to a system crash I had before Christmas followed by a data recovery operation and data transferred to a LaCie 1TB external drive...could the filebe damaged? Could there be another way to open the file? The size 472MB is correct but I can't open the movie. There are a couple of other files that also will not open. All QUICKTIME files that are on my main computer and on another external hard drive open fine. Puzzled! All ideas welcomed. Thanks

...thanks for replying. I've tried everything imaginable including VLC and nothing seemed to urge these files to open. Fortunately they are not huge elaborate projects and may take less than a day to reconstruct. Some of them were backed up as QUICKTIME clips and again some of those opened and some didn't. Oddly enough I opened some that wouldn't open under the menu "OPEN" or double clicking but when opened from the "AUTOSAVE VAULT", some of them opened! It is not so much the files I'm concerned about as much as the "problem", something I would want to know how to get out of at a later date. thanks

Hi there, Well, i thing i might have had the same problem (if you dont mean the selecting part, then try keyboad with usb and without if u dont have a macbook pro or so), i did the same and after selecting windows it said "No bootable disk" or " no boot disk" or something like that and the installer wont start when i was trying to install via CD/DVD.
The sulution is to use 2 usb-drives, one for the support drivers from apple and one for the windows it self after burning the CD/DVD to the usb on a PC using the windows own tools and creating a ISO file.
(there might be problems whit CD/DVD install sometimes)
The ISO file on a own USB is the most importat thing!! (and even apple and windows didnt know that but me and a technikal support guy from the store i bought it managed to fix it after like 4 days )
    Hope it work now mate!

  • ITunes/Quicktime will not open

So iTunes 7.02 and whatever the latest quicktime is will not launch at all. If I launch them they'll show up in task manager, but will never open. Ending task does nothing but cause my comp to go completely unstable (won't shut down/reboot except with a hard shutdown, can't go to add/remove programs, explorer is f'd up and won't close and reopen itself, etc). Also, trying to launch either of them prevents me from opening new programs or shutting down.
I've scoured the web and itunes support and haven't found a solution that works for me.
    So far I've...
1)uninstalled itunes/quicktime, deleted all files (except for itunes preferences/playlists), rebooted and reinstalled.
2)uninstalled itunes/quicktime, reboot, installed quicktime 6.4, reboot, unistalled quicktime, reboot, reinstalled itunes/quicktime 7+
3)uninstalled itunes/quicktime, delete all itunes/quicktime files, reboot, installed quicktime standalone, installed itunes.
4)uninstalled apple software updater, and redid #3.
    5) uninstalled quicktime and itunes, rebooted, removed itunes preference files from both application data folders, reinstalled.
And tried some of the above a few more times.
There were no hardware/software changes, this just started happening two days ago. Plugging in my shuffle will charge it but iTunes won't launch (except in task manager).
I don't have Norton/McAffee (that was creating a problem for some people). I'm using windows firewall and it is already an exception. Current anti-virus is AVG 7.5, I have all the security updates including SP2.

excellent news. glad you're up and running again.
here's what was probably going on. since itunes and quicktime (and ituneshelper) are internet applications, your Firewall will be keeping an eye on modifications to those programs. typically a new set of rules is generated for the new versions of the applications. so it's possible for the Firewall to allow the earlier version of the application, but balk at the newer one (because there's different sets of rules for each one).
so if you run into this sort of thing again after an upgrade, try checking through the exceptions that you firewall has set up for those new versions of the applications.

  • Both ITunes and Quicktime will not open

I can't open either ITunes or Quicktime. Each time, I get the iTunes or QuickTime Player "has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." I tried repairing both, was able to uninstall & reinstall iTunes but still get same error. Quicktime would not uninstall, removed it through Windows Install Clean Up, cannot re-install.
    Here are the errors:
    AppName: itunes.exe AppVer: 7.6.2.9 ModName: quicktimestreamingauthoring.qtx
    ModVer: 7.4.5.67 Offset: 0001685c
    EventType : BEX P1 : QuickTimePlayer.exe P2 : 7.4.5.67 P3 : 47edaedf

    P8 : c0000409 P9 : 00000000
And the one during the Quicktime install:
    Error writing to file: C:\Program Files\QuickTime\QTSystem\QuickTimeStreaming.Resources\ QuickTimeStreaming.Resources.qtr
Verify if you have access to that directory
Please help! I am pulling my hair out!

I wish I had an answer for you; all I can say is, you're not alone. I've been unable to open iTunes (7.6.2) all day, and after reading your post, I tried QuickTime: yep, it only crashes, just like iTunes. FWIW, here's what I tried: restart, repair disk permissions, CD start, using Time Machine to restore iTunes 7.6.1 (now I have both that and 7.6.2, but neither works), calling Apple tech support (they want $49 to see if they can come up with something else).
Also FWIW, this problem started this morning; last night, I upgraded Safari (3.1.1). I don't know why there'd be a connection, but...?

  • Quicktime will not open video files - QuickTime couldn't parse it: -2048

I just purchased a new Sony handycam so that I can make movies using iMovie. However, iMovie will not import the files from my camera and although the files show up on the drive as Quicktime MPEG files (with suffix MPG) neither Quicktime or iMovie will open the files. iMovie gives an error message saying "Quicktime couldn't parse it: -2048"
