  • Videos (of any kind) will not play in Safari

Okay, this has been bugging me for about two months now! Videos of any format will not play in Safari. Anything flash (Youtube for example) OR anything Quicktime (mpg, avi, mov, mp4) refuses to even show up when I try to view them. I go to a Youtube page and the whole page loads except for where the video should be...it's just not there at all. Same with Quicktime. If I go to say the HD Trailer for a movie, the three different sizes (480 720 1080) buttons do not even show up (because they are mini Quicktime things)!!
What I have tried to solve this with: I have updated Flash, uninstalled/reinstalled Flash, updated Quicktime, have Mac OS X up to date...but nothing works. These files play fine on just plain Quicktime player (ie I downloaded them) or in FIREFOX, but not in Safari.
BTW: I am using Safari 2, not 3. Also, WMVs actually will play sometimes, but not imbedded, only if you click like www.example.com/movie.wmv
Any help? I'm running an Intel Macbook Pro

I am using OS 10.7 Lion. Quicktime will not play avi files. One support forum gave 2 links to get the proper codecs but I got a 404 error. Can anyone help?

    You can also use VLC

It woks very well, can read almost anything, and also lets you do conversions to other formats.

I have a MAC running Maverick. MP3 sounds will not play in Safari or FireFox, but will play if you download the file locally to the Desktop. How to resolve this?

You probably have an internet plugin installed that is preventing the MP3s from playing. I just checked a site with an MP3, and it played, rather than downloaded.
The internet plugin folders are at:
    /Library/Internet Plug-ins and
    ~/Library/Internet Plug-ins
(~/Library is hidden by default. Let me know if you don't know how to access it.)
My internet plugins were all in /Library; there were none in ~/Library.
Try moving these folders to the desktop (don't delete them), restarting, and then seeing if the MP3s play.
They it will be trial and error to see which plugin is responsible.

  • Videos and Music will not play using Safari or Chrome

I have tried every trouble shooting option I can find on the internet. Nothing is working. Adobe is fully updated. Safari is fully updated. Chrome is fully updated. Videos will not play on websties such as CNN, CBC. Music will not play on websites such as Sound Cloud.
    YouTube and Netflix work fine.

You're dealing with two different plug-ins.
    Flash Player (Mac HD/Library/Internet Plug-ins/Flash Player.plugin)
    and "PepperFlash" (Applications/Google Chrome.app/Contents/Versions/34.0.1847.116/Google Chrome Framework.framework/Internet Plug-Ins/PepperFlash/PepperFlashPlayer.plugin)
And NetFlix uses the Microsoft SilverLight plug-in.
    From SoundCloud support:
Why can't I hear tracks using Safari?
If you can't hear tracks on SoundCloud using Safari, please go to Safari ---> Preferences ---> Advanced ---> and un-check "Stop plugins to save power." Like this:
If YouTube works, it may be doing so in HTML5 mode which requires no plug-in. Do you use Apple's Firewall or (please say you don't) anti-virus?

  • Help major issue, quicktime will not play my HDV movie?

I have a major problem here.
I have a movie i shot and edited when I was at university using Final cut pro and HDV cams.
I need to show this movie on my macbook pro, but I purchased final cut express, and have just found out my Quicktime does not play this file.. the screen is just black?
I assume I need a HDV 1080i50 codec for quicktime??? is this correct?
    Where can I get it?
I intend to give a presentation was going to use OpenOffice or use my Quicktime just for moving image
    Any suggestions?
    Regards

You were given a video that can only play in Final Cut Pro. Final Cut Express doesn't have that codec.
You going to have to go back to whom ever gave you that video and have them export the video to a codec that either Final Cut Express can play or a codec that Quicktime can play. The later would be better because, if a video can play in Quicktime it can play in Final Cut Express.

  • Videos will not play in safari either quicktime question mark of nothing

    Hi everyone,
Initially I had an issue with Quicktime videos in Safari. - They would not play, all I got was a question mark infront of the video. Looking on these forums, appartently unchecking the misc. settings in MIME in QT preferences helps. Anoyingly I cannot actually uncheck those preferences, the mac won't let me. also, after reinstalling the flash update, and restarting etc, now all I get when I go to apple.com/trailers and try to play a video is the QT playback bar, but nothing else. It just stays there and does nothing. I am on broadband so speed is not an issue. how can I fix my issue? Thanks, Adam.

Hello to everyone! Sorry if I seem to be straying off topic. There are several related threads in this forum, the Safari 3 beta forum and also the Quicktime forum.
I have this problem as well - on my PowerBook G4, but not on my PowerMac G5... Specifically, in Safari on the Apple Special Event August 2007 page where we look for Steve to intro the new iMac, I see no button to push to display the stream. Just after the last word in the paragraph that the Play button should be under, there is a small active area that will bring up the stream on its web page (an invisible button), but when that happens, there is only the audio content. I have not tried the movie trailers, but these problems sound identical. So, this looks like several related symptoms - may be several problems or only one.
    Everything works normally in FireFox.
Moving the HD/Library/Internet Plug-ins/QuickTime Plugin.webplugin file to the desktop fixes this problem in Safari, but induces several other problems.
I have MacOSX 10.4.10 up to date, Quicktime 7.2.0, Safari 2.0.4 (419.3). DIVX web player 1.3.1 (p/o 6.6 package), Flash 9.0.47, etc... I have upgraded from many, many versions of Mac-OSX to the present.
I recently installed i-Life '08 on both computers.
I repaired permissions and sucecssfully verified my disk - no impact regarding this problem.
I reinstalled Quicktime - no resolution.
I am a knowledgable user - not expert, but quite knowledgable - I suspect that there is an internet plug-in conflict. Someone elsewhere in the discussion forum (Quicktime area, I think) also ventured that guess.
Here are my internet plug-ins for the problem PowerBook G4:
    QuickTime Plugin.webplugin
    Quartz Composer.webplugin
    JavaPluginCocoa.bundle
    Java Applet.plugin
    RealPlayer Plugin.plugin
    npUpload.xpt
    iPhotoPhotocast.plugin
    VerifiedDownloadPlugin.plugin
    npdivx.xpt
    Windows Media Plugin
    Disabled Plug-Ins
    AdobePDFViewer.plugin
    flashplayer.xpt
    Flash Player.plugin
    QuickTime Plugin.plugin
    Java Applet Plugin Enabler
    ContentUploaderPlugin.plugin
    nsIQTScriptablePlugin.xpt
    DivXBrowserPlugin.plugin
    NP-PPC-Dir-Shockwave
    DRM Plugin.bundle
Don't know why the order is like it is - I displayed my directory, selected all and copied and pasted to get this list - sorting by date or name didn't alter the order of this list (hmmm - something to ponder on a dull day!).
I will post the plug-in list for my desktop that works correctly on Tuesday when I am back at the office.
That is all I know on this issue. Hope someone sees something useful here to help get to the bottom of this.
    Brian

  • Videos will not play in Safari

I have an iPhone 3GS on the 3.1.2 OS, and cannot get videos to play in Safari. I've tried watching videos on ESPN's mobile site, as well as the TV Ads for the iPhone on Apple's website, and all that shows up is a screen full of code. Any assistance is much appreciated.

The iPhone will only play H264/Quicktime video and you're trying to watch Flash based video which is not supported. But just check the javascript option is ticked in the safari options.
    There is no workaround.
If you search the forum for 'flash' you will see plenty of threads on the subject. Flash will probably never be supported for the reasons therein - plenty to read up.

  • Quicktime will not play MPEG-2 after Lion updagrade

I have upgraded my system to Lion which should enable Quicktime to load MPEG-2 videos yet I cannot "missing codec" - does anyone have a possible solution?

These are files that were stored on my previous Windows computer as AVCHD and utlised a Sony program (Picture Motion Browser - PMB) to view.  The PMB had a facility that allowed me to convert the files to MPEG-2 (.mpg) which I did.  I then transferred these files across to my iMac.
Are you sure the content is MPEG-2? AVCHD data can be stored in an MPG/MPEG file containers without transcoding but would not be recognized by Lion's QT X Player software. (I normally use the MKV file container for such data.) Try playing it in VLC and if it loads and plays without problem check the "Media Info" window to view the compression formats.
When I open the .mpg QT is launched but then the error regarding the missing Codec comes up.
Which version of QT? Lion can simultaneously use both QT X and QT 7 players. The one that opens automatically could be either depending on whether or not you have modified the default "Open with..." setting for the MPG/MPEG class of files.
I have the Lion OS which I am to believe updates QT to enable it open MPEG-2 files.
As previously stated, only QT X natively supports MPEG-2 compression. QT 7 MPEG-2 is not supported by Lion's QT X software and so, as previously mentioned, it still requires the $19.99 QT MPEG-2 Playback Component be installed.
I have also downloaded the QT MPEG-2 Conversion from the apple store however it will not install on my computer as it says I need an older version of my OS before it can proceed.
If by "QT MPEG-2 Conversion" you are referring to the QT MPEG-2 Playback Component, only the installer will not run. The component itself is compatible and can be installed in one of three different ways:
    1) Install the component on an older system and then copy the component to your Lion system.
    2) Download and use the free MPEG-2 Streamclip Beta package software to install the component. (I.e., this software package includes a "helper" utility that will install the QT MPEG-2 Playback Component which is in the installer package you purchased from Apple but which will not run on its own.)
    3) You can use Pacifist to either auto-install the component from the MPEG-2 component installer package or to extract the component and manually install it yourself.

  • Quicktime will not play .mov files since Lion installation

When using Quicktime 10.6, I am receiving the error message "...file could not be opened. A required codec isn't available." when attempting to open .mov files.  Prior to installing OS X Lion, there were no issues with playing .mov files.

I'm having the same problem. Using a clean install of Mac OS X (10.7) Lion and QuickTime 10.1.
    If I go to finder:
I can click on Icon's Play arrow and the Movie will play in the icon.
I can click on the file icon and press the spacebar and the file will play in QuickLook.
If I doubleclick on the icon to open the file in QuickTime, I get the "...file could not be opened. A required codec isn't available." message.
If I right click on the icon and click open with... QuickTime, I get the "...file could not be opened. A required codec isn't available." message.

  • UniVision videos will not play in Safari (iMac)

The videos play on my iPad2 but not on my iMac.
I tried the usual - disabled all extensions, allowed cookies, enabled javascript-  to no avail. I keep getting the endless rotating 'gear'. Flash videos work perfectly everywhere except on the UniVision site.
The site itself says to sign in with the TV provider (in my case DishTV) with no suggestions on how to do that. Although the site is very clear that I do not have to register with UniVision to watch videos, I registered anyway through Facebook and logged in but still no videos. It seems that signing in with the provider is different than registering.
Of course, I called DishTV and there is no way to sign in through DishTV.
I get UniVision as part of my package with DishTV.
I am on 10.8.5 Mountain Lion. All up to date with everything inluding the latest Flash. I do not have or want another browser other than Safari.
    Thanks!
Note: This is a repost to now the correct site - sorry

    Update:
I spoke to a senior Apple tech and we tried everything - still no video playing. At his request, I downloaded Chrome and the videos work perfectly.
So far, the videos play on Apple tech's iMac, my iPad2, with Chrome on my iMac, and my old MacBook with 10.7.5.
This narrows the problem to Safari. Unfortunately, Apple's computers are still on 10.8.4 so we do not know if the problem is with the 10.8.5 update or with my computer. (My 10.8.5 update was a Combo update)
As soon as Apple upates their own computers to 10.8.5, the tech will call me.

  • Streaming video will not play in Safari

When I get to a website with streaming video (and some ad banners, etc) a Quicktime symbol with a question mark appears in the video place holder. I've downloaded the newest version of the Quicktime plug-in and checked all my settings. I don't remember doing anything specific to change any of my settings. HELP! Thanks.
    Mark

I answered my own question. If you go to System Prefs, Quicktime, Advanced, MIME Settings and at the bottom, ensure the Miscellaneous box is not checked (it will have a dash in the box). This will allow FlashPlayer to play the movies since most content is built for FP. QT will only support up to FP v5 and FP is now on v9. Hope this helps someone.

  • Videos will not play in Safari on 2012 MacBook Pro.

I watch a fair amount of YouTube videos and also videos on news sites, but suddenly videos will no longer play. I bought my laptop about a month ago. This has happened once already. I had to download the uninstaller for Adobe and then reinstall to fix it. Is this something I'm going have to do on a monthly basis? I tried watching the videos in Firefox, and it works just fine. Is there something going on that will allow me to fix this and not have to continuously uninstall and reinstall Adobe? (I have checked my computer for updates, but it says there are none. And unless Adobe has released a newer version in the past 15 days, I have the newest version). Thanks!

I'm having the same problem.  It is affecting both of my iPads and my iPhone 4S.
