Quicktime with a question mark

I am trying to play some Mp4 movies that I uploaded to my MobileMe gallery and I cannot play the same on my Mac. I get a question mark within the Q symbol. No movies on my MobileMe is playing after upgrading to 10.6. Any suggestions?

Well, I am still no wiser, but will let you know if anything else occurs to me. Your movie will not play for me either. The page loads, and the poster frame loads, get a spinning pizza for maybe 20 seconds, and the a notice plastered to the bottom of the movie that QuickTime can't play it. It will download, and then plays in QT just fine. From this I'm going to assume it isn't a problem with your plugins, since it won't play for me either.
Since it was playing in QT after I downloaded it, I tried uploading it from QTX to my web gallery:
http://gallery.mac.com/francines#100086
I'll take it down of course as soon as I finish trying to figure this out. Anyway, the point is that it plays there just fine, but I quickly discovered that QTX had converted it to the m4v format for the two larger versions, and to a 3gp format for the smallest version.
So I wondered if the mp4 format was the problem. I seem to have disposed of most of my mp4s online, but did find one still up:
http://homepage.mac.com/francines/.Movies/kenstr.html
Oddly enough in the web page it plays in the QT7 plugin (you can tell by the control bar), but downloaded it plays in QTX. And if I drag the downloaded mp4 into the Safari window it plays with QTX, as does the download I did of your movie!
And I am indeed running Snow Leopard, and have been working on my review here:
http://www.pinkmutant.com/articles/snowleo1.html
It is working surprisingly well. This is the first real glitch that I can't understand AT ALL that I've run into.
One final question: how did you get your movie into your Gallery? I ask because there are several different ways to do that. As I mentioned above, I put your movie up using the QTX Player, went to the Share menu and selected MobileMe Gallery.

  • Logo of QuickTime with a question mark!

For thi first time, in every sites I choose to visit appear, instead of advertising (publicity), a QT logo (transparent) with, in the middle of it, a question mark ("?"). What happen? Thank you very much.

    Hi
First, make sure the web content boxes are checked in your Safari Preferences>Security.
    If they are:
Do you have a VLC plug-in in your Internet Plug-ins folder? If you do, remove it, restart Safari and try the sites again.
If you don't, have a look at the Quicktime>Advanced settings via System Preferences:
Enable flash ought to be checked
Also, look at your Mime Settings for still images - everything but Photoshop, Flash Pic and PDF selected; video - at least Quicktime Movie. Miscellaneous - nothing checked.
Just to be sure your permissions are current, "repair permissions" via Disk Utility in your Utilities folder before you restart Safari.

  • Quicktime comes up with a Question mark?

My itunes work and my music can play however when i go to certain websites, images and movies come up as the quicktime logo with a question mark in the middle. I have all the updates and dont know why it wont show or play images, movies or games.

Is this on your Dell or on a Mac?
If it's a Mac I'd repair the permissions and see if that didn't cure it. If it doesn't.....
Download Quicktime again and reinstall...which will probably work on the Dell also.

  • QuickTime logo with a question mark

Apologies if this is answered somewhere else, but I couldn't find the exact problem and I'm also very new at this.
On certain web pages I get a quick time logo with a question mark over it appearing, that seems to indicate some kind of missing plug-in (though I may be wrong about this). It's only started happening recently, but I can't pinpoint why. I have Flip4Mac, Quick Time Pro and the latest (I think) Flash Player installed. It means that I cannot read certain pages or see certain elements of pages. As an example, I tried to visit 'www.menierchocolatefactory.com/index2.asp', but just got a big QuickTime logo with question mark. I downloaded their suggested plug-in, but to no avail.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks.

Not sure what resets these settings. Glad the solution was one of the easier paths.
Thanks for the and Aloha from Big Island.

  • Quicktime logo continually appearing with a question mark

Recently various pages viewed with Safari (and Firefox) are not displaying correctly and a Quicktime logo with a question mark is being shown. I thought I had perhaps erased a codec of some sort but I cannot solve the problem. I cannot view any flash animations, movies within web pages etc.
    Help!!!

The Quicktime logo with a question mark refers to Flash video.
These are the downloads and the settings you need in order to view/hear pretty much everything: The setup described below has proved repeatedly successful on both PPC and Intel macs, but nothing in life carries a guarantee!
Assuming you already run OS 10.4.9 or above and have Quicktime 7.2, and are using Safari 2 or 3, download and install (or re-install even if you already had them) the latest versions, suitable for your flavor of Mac, of:
    RealPlayer from http://uk.real.com/player/
Flip4Mac WMV Player from http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/player/wmcomponents.mspx (Windows Media Player for the Mac is no longer supported, even by Microsoft)
    Perian from http://perian.org/
    Adobe FlashPlayer from http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/download/download.cgi?P1ProdVersion=ShockwaveFlash
In Quicktime Preferences, under advanced, UNcheck Enable Flash, and under Mime settings/Miscellananeous only check Quicktime HTML (QHTM).
In Macintosh HD/Library/Quicktime/ delete any files relating to DivX (Perian already has them).
    Now repair permissions and restart.
The world should now be your oyster!
You should also have the free VLC Player from http://www.videolan.org/ in your armory, as this plays almost anything that DVD Player might not.

  • QuickTime logo with a question mark on it

Some websites i go to show a picture or video instead a faint quicktime logo with a question mark shows up. How do I get rid of it and show the picture or video instead?

I find it interesting that this is clearly a topic of interest since 450 people have clicked on it---significantly more than the other questions on this page---and yet, NO ANSWER.
I have not been able to download Apple trailers. For instance, just went to a link to download the trailer for You Kill Me:
    http://www.apple.com/trailers/independent/youkillme/
Click on Medium size for the screen, so I go here:
    http://www.apple.com/trailers/independent/youkillme/medium.html
A little button says you have to have version 7 of Quicktime which I keep downloading, since I keep trying to see trailers.
Although I know I've downloaded this software in the past, I'm getting the crazy Quicktime Q with a question mark.
So I go so far as to download Quicktime 7, yet again, then Restart. Try the movie. Still get the question mark in the Q.
    What is up with this??????

  • Quicktime Icon with a Question Mark

I've been using quicktime for years and now when I go to some sites or try to download items I'll get the quicktime icon with a question mark in it. What is that and how do I fix it?

    I've been using
quicktime for years and now when I go to some sites
or try to download items I'll get the quicktime icon
with a question mark in it. What is that and how do I
fix it?The most common problem is
Flash. If you do not have the current free Adobe
Flash Player software installed, download and install
it. Once installed, you must tell the browser plug-in
player to ignore the built-in QT Flash software
(which only handles Flash 5 and below) and use the
newly installed software instead. To do this, open
the "QqickTime Preferences > Advanced > MIMI Settings
Misc." area and ensure the "Flash Media" option is
    deselected.
    Hi,
I'm experiencing the very same problem and I was indeed adviced to install adobe flash player; it didn't work. I tried adjusting the quicktime settings, but when I go to MIME Setting, I simply get this completely blank window...Any ideas?
    Thanks!

  • Images appearing as little blue box with a question mark

Hi, I have Safari version 3.1.1 and in the last two weeks, I've been missing data and having in it's place a small little blue box with a question mark show up in Safari and in some of my mail downloads too.
    Can anyone assist
    Thanks
    Tony
p.s. I have started a new topic because the other string relating to this topic is showing as solved with cause being devleopers.

I have exactly the same problem with safari and mail but firefox works fine. If i go to a website that requires flash in safari it will say i need to install flash 8 to view the stuff even though i have flash 9 installed. I thought it might have been a problem with flash and thought about uninstalling and reinstalling but because firefox works fine it would seem to be a safari problem. This only started happening with the latest quicktime update to, and i've tried downgrading back to an older version but my pro-apps require the latest version to run.
I did the same updates on my macbook but didn't encounter the same problems, although i lost audio playback on avi's in quicktime which i have since fixed with perian.

  • Quicktime screen w/question mark

I've downloaded the newest quicktime, 7.0.3 no problems installing or downloading, but everytime I go to play a quicktime movie, the "Q" icon shows up with a question mark in front of it. Any idea why that is?
Also, the quicktime won't work for my iTunes store, we don't even get a screen to show up and that's with the new updates.
    Any help is appreciated

  • Why does quicktime have a question mark when I open Safari - how do I fix?

Whenever I open Safari to any page with Quicktime I
get a Q with a questions mark through it.
I am about ready to hang myself.
    Thanks,

    Edgar123,
    Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
Sounds as if somehow your Mac has misplaced the /Library/Internet Plug-Ins/QuickTime Plugin.webplugin file. Try searching your hard drive to see if that plug-in is around in the wrong spot, or download and re-install the Quicktime installer from the Downloads link at the top of the Discussions page.

  • I have received an Email with an attachment(IMG.0157.Mov) that loans but then becomes a circle with a question mark. What to do?

I have received an Email with an attachment(IMG. 0157.Mov)that loads but then becomes a circle with a question mark. What to do?

Assuming it's from a trusted source it's probably a video format that your system doesn't support.
If it will load in QuickTime Player, do a Get Info (⌘ i) to see what the specific format is. The .mov is a generic suffix a dozens or more video formats, the Get Info will give you the details.
    hope this helps

  • Audio and video files dont play on wiki only a qicktime icon with a question mark appears

I have many users on my server who upload podcasts, but the problem is that the audio file they upload doesnt always play. Only a quicktime icon with a question mark appears. What is also very strange is when you refresh the page usually the file will play and it will work on a Mac but then sometimes not on a PC, and the files always play without a problem on iPads and iPhones.
The icon looks something like this. PLEASE HELP!

The same thing happened to me last night, except for with video.  Playing videos used to work fine on all operating systems.  Now it will work on Windows and iPhone/iPad but only some videos work on my Macs.  After searching for hours here is what I found:
    1. Go to Safari preferences, Security Tab and uncheck "Enable Plug-ins".  When I tried to play video after doing this the Quicktime question mark went away but the video didn't play, it just turned into background color and I can't even right click on it.
    2. Run Safari in 32-bit mode.  Locate the Safari file in your Applications folder.  Right click it and click Get Info.  Check the "Run in 32-bit Mode" box.  Restart safari.  This did nothing for me.
    3. Try a different web browser.  I tried Safari, Chrome, Firefox and Opera.  They all do the same thing.
    4. As for codecs, I updated then reinstalled Flash, DivX and Flip4Mac.  Still doesn't work on Macs.
I know it's not a problem with the server because it works on Windows and mobile devices.  Another weird thing is certain .mp4 videos work fine but some won't.  I re-uploaded them and made sure the video worked on the server and the file is fine.  All regular websites work fine: Youtube, Apple, etc.
My only guess, since this suddenly happened on all my Macs, is that there was some update that caused this.  All help is appreciated.

  • Quicktime Logo w/Question mark on web pages

A few months ago, suddenly I was unable to view Quicktime files on web pages when they loaded. The program is on my computer and it will play files I have saved on my hard drive but when I go to a website that has a Quicktime file (still or video) I only get the Quicktime logo with a question mark and cannot open, play or access the file in any way. I've checked all the settings I know on my computer to fix the problem but none of them have worked. Anyone have a solution to this issue?

  • I got a flashing folder with a question mark. I got a new hard drive and upgraded to 4 gigs and can't open anything or reload the operating system? Help?

I got a flashing folder with a question mark. I got a new hard drive and upgraded to 4 gigs and can't open anything or reload the operating system? Help? FYI: I have been using boot camp with windows 7 and started getting a kernal_data_Page_error and it would reboot windows, i was trying to do a chkdsk on the next reboot, but thats when i started getting this issue. I have put in a new hard drive and went from 2 gigs to 4. I can not get the computer to do anything, even the monitor does not show anything now????

    Prep your new drive:
    Drive Preparation
    1. Boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button.  When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID (for Intel Macs) or APM (for PPC Macs,) then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
After formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer. Install OS X.
