QuickTime won't close.

QuickTime Player does not close after all windows of the app are closed and the app disapears from the dock.
If I try to delete the movie I was watching it says that the file is being used and then I always have to force quit QT from the finder.
Using a Macbook 15" pro 2010 2.4 i5 with 4gb of ram and running Mountain Lion latest update as of this posts date.
Thank you in advance.
Stef

The thing is that other apps are still active and inmy dock even when I close the last window of this app, where with QT the icon disapears from the dock, thus I can not quit the app.
The application icon should not be disappearing and so this sounds like a Finder/system display problem. As to quitting, either try the "Command-Q" keyboard shortcut or double-click the app or a movie icon in the finder to restore and use the QT Player "Quit" menu. If neither of these work, it would tend to confirm that you have a system problem. I would normally check to see if you have the same problem using a different user account. If you don't have the same problem, I would restore the preference file to see it that fixes the problem. If you continue to have the same problem in both accounts, I would either replace the player app and recheck or reinstall the operating system.
I have to quit the app from the last window like you said witht the kyes and everything.
See above for further testing.
Before with Snow Leopard when I closed every window of an app the app stays open in the dock until I close it or it quited it self like iPhoto does.
Snow Leopard was working properly while your current system/software is not.
Do you know any other way I can twick the QT app into staying in the dock until I quit it and then to disapear?
There is nothing to tweak. Based on your updated description, your system is not working properly. This is not the way your system/this app should be behaving.

What video card is your Windows 8.1 (assumed 64 bit) computer using? NVIDIA GeForce or other?
Please check the Device Manager/Display Adapters to confirm the video card/graphics card and how many cards.
Is the card driver version up to date according to the web site of the manufacturer of the card?
Are you working from a User Account with Administrative Privileges? And, do you have QuickTime (latest version) installed on
    the computer with Premiere Elements?
Are you  using a pen and tablet device instead of a mouse?
Does the problem exist with and without the antivirus and firewall(s) disabled?
Please consider the above and then we can decide what next.
    Thank you.

QuickTime won't load on my iPad? Just spins.

    Hey Kathy029,
Thanks for the question. After reviewing your post, it sounds like your are having difficulty with one program. I would recommend that you read these articles, they may be able to help you resolve or isolate the issue. I'd start by closing all the open apps and restarting the iPhone. If it is still not resolved after restarting you may need to restores the device.

  • Pop up box in yahoo mail won't close, asks "do you use the yahoo! toolbar on multiple computers?" has option buttons but no response when clicking on anything, pop up box just sits there in the way

whenever I open my yahoo mail when using Firefox, a pop up box appears on the upper left side of the screen, it asks the question "do you use the yahoo! toolbar on multiple computers?" and gives click boxes for "Save to my yahoo ID" and "No thanks, just save to this computer". I get no response to clicking on either box, nor will the pop up close if I click on the "X" in the upper right corner of this pop up. It won't close out and it sits right over the top of the email messages in my inbox. All else seems to work fine, but can't get rid of this pop up box....very annoying.

  • VI front panel won't close when it's done executing, when this vi was called by reference.

I've created a simple vi set to demonstrate the issue I'm having. I'm dynamically launching sub vi's from a main application. Simply put the main application is my test exec and the subvi's I'm calling dynamically are different tests. In the example I'm posting here the test vi is called Electrical Test 1.vi. I've configured this Electrical Test 1.vi to show front panel when called and close afterwards if originally closed.  Problem is it won't close the front.
Other things to keep in mind
I want to be able to launch the test vi and not wait till it's done.
    I'm using LabVIEW 2012 SP1.
    Solved!

Basically the close after call only matters if the VI is called as a subVI (just like if you open a VI yourself and run it, it doesn't close when it is done).  The two ways around this are to either have your top lvl app close the VI when it is done, this is explained here:
    http://digital.ni.com/public.nsf/allkb/987B2026B41BD39786256CF800032E8C
or to have your VI close itself when it is done.  Use a This VI reference and the Front Panel:Close invoke node.
    Hope this helps.

  • Quicktime Will Not Close Open Windows

After I record a video Quicktime refuses to close any windows from those recordings.  When the red X is clicked quicktime will lag out for a few seconds at the end of which the window has not been closed.  The only way to get the window to close is to quit Quicktime with the "Close windows when quitting an application" preference enabled in the System Preferences > General.  If this preference is not enabled, Quicktime will refuse to quit and the program must be Force Quit.
I've gone and done the usual troubleshooting steps like rebooting, deleting preferences, etc...  This does not solve this issue leading me to believe it's either a poorly thought out "feature" or a bug.  Unless there is some new paradigm of closing windows that I am not familiar with of closing window, thanks to Apple;s new paradigm of changing tried and true methodologies for new "simpler", "let us do that for you" ones, this is extremely annoying for someone who want to itterate through multiple video takes quickly without unnecessarily tieing up system resources.  If I make a video that I don't want I want to just trash it and be done with it.
Anyway, does anyone know if there is any way to fix this so that I don't have dozens of videos active?

    Lets do a few things.
    1. Update QuickTime. http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/
    2. Open up QuickTime player.
    3. Click on Edit> QuickTime Preferences>Advanced.
    4. In the center of this section there is a "Video" section select Safe Mode.
    5. Click on Ok and go ahead and close out of QuickTime.
I have also noted that there are SEVERAL bugs with QuickTime and Nvidia Chips.
A few things I suggest you do is to update all of your drivers, and install any pending Windows Updates.
Please post if this worked for you.

iTunes won't run either, but I'm guessing this is due to the Quicktime issue? I've tried uninstalling both and just installing standalone Quicktime but it still won't run.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

    Perfect, thanks.
Faulting module name: unknown, version: 0.0.0.0, time stamp: 0x00000000
Unknown module for iTunes, QuickTime not launching either ... nowadays the first thing I check for with that combo is if another application (other than QuickTime) has dropped old QuickTime componentry in non-standard locations on your PC.
First we'll adjust some view settings on the PC.
    1. From the Start menu, click Open.
    2. In the Organize menu, click Folder and Search Options.
    3. Click the View tab.
    4. In the "Advanced settings" pane under "Hidden files and folders" make sure that the "Show hidden files and folders" option is selected, and the "Hide extensions for known file types" option is unchecked.
    5. Click OK.
Now, in Computer, open your C drive (or whichever drive your operating system is installed on).
    Open the "Windows" folder.
    Open the "System32" folder.
What files or folders can you see in there with QuickTime in the file or folder name? (In a standard installation of QuickTime, you should see precisely two files ... QuickTime.qts and QuickTimeVR.qtx ... and no QuickTime folders whatsoever.)

  • I have a problem closing tabs in Firefox v3.6.13. The first tab on the left hand side (ie the page that opens when I launch Firefox) won't close when I click on the red x.

I can't close the left hand tab except by exiting firefox. When i launch firefox the original tab stays open when I click on the red x, even if I have other tabs open.
i can alter the website displayed on the left hand tab but it still won't close and leave other more recent tabs open.

Start Firefox in [[Safe Mode]] to check if one of the add-ons is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Themes).
    * Don't make any changes on the Safe mode start window.

It should work ok after that.

  • Hidden tab won't close, constantly loading.

There's a tab on my Firefox that doesn't show on the window. It seems to be a tab that was previously open, that I thought I'd closed. While it doesn't show on the window, the tab preview when I mouse over it in the windows taskbar shows that the tab is still open. When I click the x in the preview, the tab won't close. Also on mousing over the tab, it shows that the page is blank, but it seems as though it is loading something. It may or may not be causing my computer to run slower than usual, but I can't be sure. Either way, it's annoying and the only way I can get rid of it is by restarting my browser, but even then after using the browser for a while another tab like that shows up and I run the same problem. How do I close a tab like this?
    Extra notes:
The tab is not open from the start. It is not a homepage, as my homepage is set to about:blank, and opening a homepage upon starting my browser is disabled.
The tab is not visible on the Firefox window. It is only visible on the windows preview when mousing over the Firefox application in the windows taskbar.

  • Google YouTube ad won't close in app store even after downloading

Google YouTube ad won't close in app store even after downloading -- this means I can't get to the store

    i have resolved the issue.
I had to close down the App Store, re-open it, and in the purchases tab the error disappeared and the option to resume the download was there again. However, I have spent the last 3 days opening and closing the program, restarting my computer. There is obviously a problem with this because there are other users who've had the same issue. Its frustrating because Apple has already taken my $20. I could have easily gone to a store to buy it if I could.

  • Quicktime won't start - have tried re-installing

I have installed itunes and quicktime but quicktime won't start. I tried un-installing both and re-installing but still quicktime will not start. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    ahhhh. that's suggestive.
a few more questions aimed at narrowing in on possible culprits.
by any chance, when you attempt to uninstall QuickTime do you get a standalone "fatal error" message?
try launching your QuickTime Control panel. does it launch, or do you get an error message? if you get an error message, what does it say?
have you ever installed an ACE or K-Lite Mega Codec Pack, QT Alternative, or Storm Codec on your PC? if so, which version?

Both the AVI and the MOV file extensions refer to the file container and not the compressed data the file contains. Both are generic file containers in that each may contain any valid combination of audio and/or video data that is compatible with the codec component configuration of the system on which the file was created. On the other hand, whether a file is playback compatible, conversion compatible, and/or edit compatible depends on the data actually contained in the file container. So, you are basically dealing with two separate issues here—the container and what is inside it.
Basically, if you want to make your files ediit compatible with iMovie, you must change your file container to one that is acceptable to iMovie and convert the data to edit compatible audio and/or video compression formats as may be necessary. The best approach is to determine what codecs were actually used to create the original AVI files and add them to your system if possible. In most cases a codec package like Perian can be added to your system's codec component configuration to may the AVI file playable. Once they are playable, in the QT 7 app then they can be chnged or converted to file types and compression formats that can be edited in iMovie. (While Perian handles most codecs commonly used to create AVI files, it does not handle all possibilities and, while the Perian codec package still works under cureent Mac OS versions, its development group has decided to drop further development/support of the package.)
Background: AVI is a file container originally developed by Microsoft back in 1992 but for which official support was discontinued about 11 years. Despite its limitations, Windows users still tend to use this file based on its open source ease of use and generic nature, thus, making its use so popular that most users are unwilling to switch to more modern but less generic file types. Since some AVI legacy compression formats have never been transcoded for the Mac or use beyond OS 9 or OS X PPC platforms, it is often important to know what specific compression formats are contained in the AVI file to know which codecs to add to your system and which not to add in order to avoid possible codec conflicts.
You can use many different converters to convert AVI files to iMovie edit compatible files. Most third-party apps contain their own buit-in codecs which do not relay on the Mac codec component configuration. Free ones, like HandBrake, usually have limited conversion capabilities while those that have more varied outputs are usually commercial in nature and will cost you additional cash. QT 7 Pro or the free MPEG Streamclip app allow you to access you own system's component configuration and use any available codec component like DV, AIC, MPEG-4, H.264, Photo JPEG, etc.—all of which are iMovie compatible for editing purposes—but only after making the AVI file QT 7 player compatible.
In order to determine what compression formats wewre used in your AVI files you can
    1) Try checking the Finder "Info" window,
    2) Use the "Inspector", "Media Info", or "Properties" window of any player app that will open the file, or
    3) Use a general media utility app like "MediaInfo" to read the file characteristics.

  • Several tabs in a window won't close.

I've tried command-W, clicking on the X, and using the menu to close them, and two of my open tabs won't close at all.

Try temporarily disabling JavaScript. In the Tools menu select Option, then go to the Content panel in the Options window and de-select the setting "Enable JavaScript". Close the Options window and then try to close the tab. You can then re-enable JavaScript.
