Quicktime won't install on OS 10.5.8

I'm working on a video project and bought the QT Pro upgrade. I entered the serial number into the QT 7 player. Which showed the new pro functions but the player froze. I deleted the player, downloaded QT QuickTime766Leopard.dmg. When I ran the install everything seemed to work correctly, when I restart the Mac QT is not in the system drive or on the Mac anywhere. I've tried a few times, removed old copies of QT, still no success.
I feel like I paid $30+ dollars for the Pro version to break QT on my Mac. Suggestions?

I don't want to reinstall the OS, so how would I manually extract the QT player from the .dmg file?
Most people use Pacifist to extract the Player from the installer package that's contained in the DMG image file. Dave Sawyer gives a more complete description HERE.
Once extracted would I just move the file to applications folder and expect it to run?
Assuming you haven't corrupted the embedded structure, deleted your QT components, etc., then yes, simply return it to your Applications folder.

  • QuickTime Won't Install, Can't Find Newer Version OSX 10.4.11

When QuickTime 7.6 released, the update caused problems on my Mac PPC G5 (OSX Tiger 10.4.11). I deleted it. I attempted to reinstall an older version of QT that I knew functioned. This was over a year ago. It didn't work. As it was not urgent, I forgot about it.
Now, there is software I want to use that relies on QT being installed.
Running into the same problem with the installation. It's a Catch-22 situation.
*The QT 7.5.5 Installer won't install because "a newer version is already installed".*
*However, attempts to run ANY software or movie or whatnot that uses QT tells me the opposite, that QT is NOT installed.*
I have searched the computer's furthest corners trying to dig out components and packages and it STILL insists QT is installed. I've searched on every possible variation of QuickTime, Quicktime, quicktime, qt, you name it. NOTHING.
What am I missing? How do I get this to work? I've no intention of upgrading to Leopard just yet.
    Thanks in advance.

    What am I missing?
As far as I know, the installing software still checks the "Library > Receipts" folder to read a history of which package updates have been installed rather than searching to see if the actual app is installed. Have you deleted the receipt ".pkg" files equal to or newer than the one you currently wish to install. However, remember this approach assumes that any "patches" applied in the ordinary upgrade process will not create a conflict within the embedded QT structure when reinstalling an older version--which may or may not be true here. (I.e., QT is no longer an independent application or software package but rather an integrated part of the operating system.) The safest approach is to re-install an older version of the entire OS and upgrade the system as it was meant to be updated to the level at which you wish to operate.

  • QuickTime won't install/uninstall

At home I use a Mac as indicated.
At work, I am running Windows XP Pro SP2. I've been trying to get the latest version of QuickTime to install. I get "A newer version of QuickTime is already installed. This installation cannot proceed while the newer version of QuickTime is installed." First, this is not true, I have QuickTime 7.1. I cannot uninstall QuickTime because I seem to be missing the install package. I've now deleted all the QuickTime files and removed the entries from the Registry. However, somewhere the installer is still finding an installation of QuickTime. I have administrator rights. Does anyone have suggestions?

I ran the Microsoft Fix-It Tool located at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2438651, as referenced by Dianne 13, and it worked PERFECTLY!
An update to QuickTime would not install on my PC; I kept getting a message that it "ecountered an error". I tried installing the update manually; I was told a newer version was already installed, and the installation could not be completed. QuickTime wouldn't even open; I got the same message about a newer version, so I tried running the uninstaller, both from the Start Menu shortcut and from within Control Panel - neither worked. The uninstaller told me it encountered an error & couldn't continue.
I ran the Microsoft Fix-It tool that Dianne 13 posted the link to, and it uninstalled QuickTime without any problem whatsoever, and the new version of QuickTime was able to then install.

  • Unable to update QuickTime, won't install update, can't uninstall - HELP!

Firefox (20.0.1) say need to update QuickTime. Properties show current version 7.6.4. Update button takes to download 7.7.3. It downloads ok, but will not install, says newer version already installed. Didn't find newer update than 7.7.3. Tried to uninstall QuickTime, says have more current version, need uninstall newer first. Tried Windows Vista help, looked through Community questions, still unable to find resolution. Supposed newer version not show in Programs, only updates can find are Windows. Not tech savvy enough to go further without guidance. If no fix available, suggestion for alternate program that does same job would be very welcome!

  • ITunes / Quicktime won't install - error message during in installation

My computer, a Dell running with Windows Vista, has not been able to have iTunes & Quicktime installed on it in months. I've attempted to install it a countless number of times & tried a variety of things with my computer to install it but it just doesn't work - I get the same error message everytime. I can't even remember what happened to make it start acting so ridiculous.
It always starts out looking good and everything seems to be working pretty well, the green bar filling up pretty quickly, but then the 'Status' gets to about 'Publishing product information' and the error message pops up and I can't install it. It goes along the lines of "A error occurred during the installation of assembly: ..." then it goes on to say 'Please refer to Help and Support for more information. HRESULT: 0x8007054F'. Here's a screenshot of the error message with the long whatever on it:
    http://i46.tinypic.com/qoesm1.png
I believe I get the same message even when I attempt to download the two software separately (iTunes & Quicktime).
Can any one tell me what needs to be done? I have no idea what to try anymore. All help will be much appreciated. Thank you .
P.S.: If it helps, I can't really reinstall Internet Explorer (removed it when I downloaded Firefox).

    Thanks!
    (3) And I do not believe I have Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 installed on this computer, as I just tried to install it and I received this error message: http://i45.tinypic.com/a3m7bc.png
Okay ... that rules out one possible treatment. Sometimes people with the redistributable installed can get past this by applying a security update for it ... but it looks like the same sorts of problems are preventing it from installing.
    (2) And last time I checked my History I had several failures I believe, however now I only see one failed update, that being Update for Windows (KB944036). The error code listed 8000FFFF. Apparently it's an update for Internet Explorer 8.
The other primary strategy we (I?) have for dealing with these is to attempt to treat any underlying issues on the PC that prevent Windows Updates from installing. Although I have a sneaking suspicion that your 8000FFFF is related to your IE being uninstalled, I think we'd probably better try following up on the following document:
[Error when you download updates using Windows Update or Microsoft Update: 8000FFFF|http://support.microsoft.com/kb/946414]
After applying those measures, do your Windows update and/or iTunes installation failures clear up?

  • Itunes and Quicktime Won't Install

OK, so about a week ago I get a message saying the new version of Itunes is available to I go to install it. I left it going and returned to my laptop to find it had done it. I click on itunes and it says "initialising itunes" but that's it, the programme wouldn't actually open. I reinstall it and half way through I get an error message saying "verify you have acccess to that directory" and the installation cancels. I did a disk check of my C drive which unearthed nothing but STILL the problem persists and I am unable to do anything on itunes or with my Ipod Touch. I am on Windows Vista, anyone know how to fix this as it is driving me nuts!

Interesting ... if it's citing multiple different directories, we might be having some generalised permissions trouble. But it could also still be a damaged file or files.
Let's see if we can get an install to go through if we convince the installer to ignore the folder containing that file.
In Computer, open your C drive.
    Open the "Program Files" folder.
    Open the "QuickTime" folder.
    Rename the "PropertyPanels" folder PropertypanelsOLD.
Try another install ... does it go through properly this time, or does it complain about a different file and directory this time?

  • ITunes and Quicktime won't install on my computer

    Hello,
I just downgraded to Window Vista SP2 from Windows 8.1 and now i cant install iTunes or QuickTime. Everything i tried wont work, i tried installing it both, serpate, older verisons of iTunes, following the support context on Apple, cleaning my computer.
    Heres what the error stats:
QuickTime: Verify that the file exists and you can access it
iTunes: Errors occurred during installation your system has not been modified
I don't know what to do.

  • Quicktime won't install

I have been trying for a couple weeks to figure out what is wrong with Quicktime and now I'm almost bald (not really but feel that way, lol). I was doing the update of itunes which is when the problem occurred. I have received the following errors at different times:
Error 1722 There is a problem with this Windows Installer Package.
Error -1603 Fatal Error during installation
Quicktime Installation failed Error Code -1073741819
I received the first error when trying to install from standalone and the other two when updating through itunes.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

much as don't especially like encouraging folks to blue screen their PC, let's try to slow it down long enough that we can see the information on the screen.
    1) Open your system control panel (Start->Control Panels->System).
    2) Select the "Advanced" tab.
    3) Click the "Startup and Recover" section's "Settings" button
    4) Verify that under "System Failure" the "Automatically restart" checkbox is not checked.
if it slows down enough to see it properly, what numerical and text codes do you get with it? (ie 0x[zeros/letters/numbers] CAPSANDUNDERSCORES)
if the BSOD mentions a particular file, let us know what that is called. (exact spelling please.)
here's a reference on the sorts of things i'm asking about:
    Troubleshooting Windows Stop Messages
just in case it doesn't cite a file (or give us any compelling leads via the text and numerical references), let's also set the PC up to capture a minidump of the crash, so we can send that to someone who can interpret minidumps.
To set up your machine to capture a minidump, right click on "My Computer", select "Properties", select the "Advanced" tab, select the "Startup and Recovery" Settings button, select "small memory dump" from the popup. When it crashes, look for the MiniDump file. It's usually in the folder "C:\WINDOWS\Minidump" and is called something like Mini<number>-<number>.dmp.
collect the minidump, and send it to this email address
in the email, include the URL to this thread so that the person who gets the email has some context, but also give as much information about the context of the crashing as you can.

  • ITunes/Quicktime won't install

I try to download iTunes and half way through it says that there was an error downloading Quicktime and that iTunes can not run without Quicktime. I have tried installing it a few times as well as trying to download it from filehippo with no luck. I tried downloading Quicktime by itself with no luck. I try to uninstall quicktime completely and I get an error "Fatal Error During Installation" even though I'm trying to UnInstall. All pop-up blockers and security programs were turned off during this, as I have been told that they may block iTunes from installing.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you.

  • Quicktime won't start - have tried re-installing

I have installed itunes and quicktime but quicktime won't start. I tried un-installing both and re-installing but still quicktime will not start. When I click open quick time player I get an hourglass for 30 seconds and then nothing happens. I tried installing quicktime without itunes and have the same problem. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    ahhhh. that's suggestive.
a few more questions aimed at narrowing in on possible culprits.
by any chance, when you attempt to uninstall QuickTime do you get a standalone "fatal error" message?
try launching your QuickTime Control panel. does it launch, or do you get an error message? if you get an error message, what does it say?
have you ever installed an ACE or K-Lite Mega Codec Pack, QT Alternative, or Storm Codec on your PC? if so, which version?

  • Quicktime update won't install

Safari was running my cpu at 100%. I re-installed the OS from the CD, then updated applications. Now iTunes won't open because it 'needs Quicktime 7.3.1 or later.' Quicktime won't open because it ask me to 'update to Quicktime 7. I've downloaded the update several times but it installs to 90% then freezes - "error in installation. Try again." So I'm snookered?

    Updating
There's been recent discussions as to what steps are truly necessary in doing a minimal problem update.
I think #1 to which all agree is to make sure you have a backup of your computer in case you do need to back out of it again.
Some like to boot from their installer discs or an external backup and verify (and if necessary repair) their internal drives as well as drive permissions. This is done with Disk Utility. You can verify a drive while booted from the same drive but sometimes this produces spurious errors. Repairing a drive (if necessary) has to be done while booted from another disk. Permissions repair can, and is probably best, done when booted from your internal drive.
[Resolve startup issues and perform disk maintenance with Disk Utility and fsck|http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214]
[Using Disk Utility in Mac OS X 10.4.3 or later|http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302672]
    [Disk Utility's Repair Disk Permissions|http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25751]
You can also go to the step of booting into safe mode to do the install. This has the advantage of idling some activities that might prevent an installation from completing.
[Mac OS X: Starting up in Safe Mode|http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107393]
[What is Safe Boot, Safe Mode? (Mac OS X)|http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107392]
[Safe Boot takes longer than normal startup|http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107394]
I like to download the update onto my computer and install it from there rather than let Software Update do it. I know a few people who had problems with doing the update via software updater found a manual install to work.
    Repair permissions again afterward.
It also helps to only install one update at a time and to run the computer for a while to make sure it is behaving well.
Almost all of the above steps (except backup) have been questioned as to necessity because probably many people have done successful updates without doing them. I say they can't hurt, they can very likely do good (especially if your computer isn't regularly maintained), so why not do them to be safe.

  • ITunes won't install because Quicktime won't

I had QT on my computer, the latest version, and I tried to download iTunes and it says "Quicktime will not install. iTunes needs Quicktime to run." and the only option I have is to close.
I removed QT and tried to install QT w/ iTunes, same error.
I tried then to just install iTunes. same error
I put QT back on alone, tried iTunes again, same error.
If anyone can help before I have to return my new ipod because of software issues that would be cool. thanks.

with that one, let's try getting an itunes 7 installer log to the Apple Engineers for a look.
    1. Open a command prompt window. (Start menu -> Run. Type in "cmd". Hit return.)
    2. Drag and drop iTunesSetup.exe onto the window so that the full pathname of the file is at the command line prompt.
    3. Type in a space, then the following line:
    /l*v C:\log.txt
    4. Hit return.
    5. The installer will create a log file:
    C:\log.txt
Find that file and send it as an attachment to this email address.
in the email to Roy, be sure to include the following information:
    - A link to the thread on Apple Discussions where the issue is being discussed
    - The username you are using in the thread
    - The version of iTunes you are using or trying to use
    - the version of Windows you are using (mention service packs)
    - A concise description of the issue you are seeing
    - The exact text of the error message you are seeing

  • Quicktime 7 Won't Install

A couple of weeks ago I uninstalled Quicktime from my laptop, by simply dragging it from my Applications folder to the Trash. I didn't delete any other files, and I left Appcleaner out of it b/c I knew I would be downloading it again. I went to Apple's quicktime site and downloaded the version linked to on the main page, went through the installation process without a hitch. Of course, the install includes a restart of the computer. Upon restarting the computer, I couldn't find Quicktime in my Applications folder, or anywhere else on the computer (I searched using Spotlight, so it may not have been as in-depth as it should be). Also, when I tried to open media that requires Quicktime or its WMV pluging, I received a message that Quicktime wasn't installed.
So I went through the whole process again, both installing from the .pkg I'd already downloaded and from a whole new download from the Quicktime site. I tried this multiple times with the same results. Eventually, I let AppCleaner go after anything I may have left over during the traditional uninstall. Still nothing. Finally, I'm here, posting for help on the Apple forums for the first time since I made the switch. I'm a total loss here. Please help.

Hello, Tatiana, and welcome to the Discussions.
I uninstalled Quicktime from my laptop, by simply dragging it from my Applications folder to the Trash.
I don't know why you did this, but actually all you uninstalled is the QuickTime Player application. Now, the installer sees the receipt that indicates that QT Player is installed and so doesn't reinstall it.
    For reinstallation instructions, see:
    http://discussions.apple.com/click.jspa?searchID=-1&messageID=12759112
    Regards.
P.S. I'd strongly suggest that you never use AppCleaner to try and remove anything that's bundled with or part of Mac OS X. You're quite likely to cause damage to the system.

  • Quicktime won't work on IE when Itunes installed and vise versa

I can't view Quicktime movies on Internet Explorer unless I install the standalone quicktime installation. But then I can't run Itunes, becuase it says quicktime isn't installed. If I install Itunes with quicktime, then the videos in IE stop working. I've tried uninstalling both. And installing each separately in different orders to try to get this to work. I do get one error each time quicktime is installed. [Quicktime for windows] [there is a problem with this windows installer package a program required for this install to complete could not be run]. It installs anyway. I have not been able to figure out what program is missing, nor find any solutions to that error and am trying to avoid a complete reinstall of windows.
    Any ideas?
