Quicktime won't open files, Get Info Video Preview crashes finder

When double-clicking any .avi video file, Quicktime attempts to open it, and then returns an error report with "excbadaccess kernprotectionfailure".
VLC will play any of these files perfectly. I want to set up file handling so that VLC always opens .avi files, so I right-click a video file and go to "Get Info," but in that window the Finder tries to generate a preview of the video, and after a second or two crashes the Finder with no error message.
It is very annoying not to be able to double-click video files to open them. How can I get this working?
Sorry if this has been asked before. Any advice would be appreciated.

That method works when selecting and then right-clicking individual files or groups of files, but I frequently put new .avi files on the machine, and I have to repeat the process. I was looking for a solution that would make any future .avi files open in VLC with a double click.
Furthermore, once the file has been set to load in VLC and the icon has changed to a VLC icon, selecting Get Info for that file will still unceremoniously crash the Finder. Is there any way to fix the preview in the Get Info window, or at least stop it from crashing the Finder?

Quicktime won't open files; gives Error -43 message.

Whenever I try to open file with quicktime I get an error message reading: "Error -43: a file could not be found (files name)" I have tried re-installing and repairing quicktime. Any suggestions? I am runnig windows Vista.

I've expierenced error 43 in the past myself and the only two things that I was aware of that caused it, was having a drive named in a way QT could not recognize, or the number of characters in a file name being limited to 21 or less.
I have never used Adobe Premiere so have no info on that.
But where you indicate a administrator issue which is related to permissions. This link may give you some info on how to navigate Windows permissions. It is in XP but you can look up for whatever OS is on the computer.

Quicktime won't open files

So I'm having a problem with a bunch of Quicktime movies I'm trying to watch on my computer. Every time I try to open one, it tells me Quicktime has encountered an error and needs to close. I have tried uninstalling & reinstalling quicktime (with iTunes, which is having issues of its own), but no luck. Any other suggestions?

I am having problems with my ipod,more specifically Quicktime, without it I can't sync... followed the recommendation from windows to remove and reinstall quicktime, now can't get it back. I have an icon on desktop with quicktime, one with ipod startup, and itunes, nothing works. I repaired quick time once, I downloaded it again, it still says on my control panel it is not there, just on my desktop as an icon..do you know how to get an icon to the control panel? I just assumed it did it by itself? this is amazing how much work this takes for 180$ music box, not including all the movies, songs I purchased.

Hi, my Apple Raid died on me. I managed to recover the files of each disk and moved into external USB drives.
The files are there, but Quicktime won´t open them. Is there a way to repair these these files ?.

According to the description of the issue provided looks like some change has been done in your system. Most probably a change in the installed codecs. I would suggest you to check whether the required codecs are installed under the folder "/Library/QuickTime".
If reinstallation is needed you can check this post "QucikTime Codecs Installation" to get some details about how to proceed.

Back up all data.
This procedure will unlock all your user files (not system files) and reset their ownership and access-control lists to the default. If you've set special values for those attributes on any of your files, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. Step 1
If you have more than one user account, and the one in question is not an administrator account, then temporarily promote it to administrator status in the Users & Groups preference pane. Step 2 (optional)

Boot into Recovery by holding down the key combination command-R at startup. Release the keys when you see a gray screen with a spinning dial.
When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select

You have 2 versions of Pages on your Mac.
Pages 5.2 is in your Applications folder.
Pages '09/'08 is in your Applications/iWork folder.
You are alternately opening the wrong versions.
Pages '09/'08 can not open Pages 5 files and you will get the warning that you need a newer version.
Pages 5.2 can open Pages '09 files but may damage/alter them. It can not open Pages '08 files at all.
Older versions of Pages 5 can not open files from later versions of Pages 5.
Once opened and saved in Pages 5 the Pages '09 files can not be opened in Pages '09.
Anything that is saved to iCloud and opened in a newer version of Pages is also converted to Pages 5 files.
All Pages files no matter what version and incompatibility have the same extension .pages.
Pages 5 files are now only compatible with themselves on a very restricted set of hardware, software and Operating Systems and will not transfer correctly on any other server software than iCloud.
Apple has removed almost 100 features from Pages 5 and added many bugs:

Since updating my Itunes software some time ago, I've not been able to add my own artwork,ie album covers, to my own personal albums.Used to be able to go to "File," "Get Info" and drag/drop my photo into the artwork box, hit save/OK and Voila! No longer and it's Really frustrating. It will let me drag it there but it
won't save it or display it. (Why they go and break somethin' that was working fine?....just an aside) What must one do now to display their own artwork for albums that are non purchasable online?

The artwork is stoed in the Artwork tag field.
Since WAV files do not have tags, there is no where to store the tags.
If you use iTunes to get artwork for WAV files, it puts themn into the AlbumArt folder adn links it to the correct files via the iTunes library.itl file.
All other formats (MP3, AAC, AIFF, Apple Lossless) have na artwork tag to store the artwork in the media file itself.

When I follow the instructions in the error message, it shows that my user name has read and write access. There are a couple other items that are read only. I tried to change this to read and write, but the Sharing and Permissions options are greyed out and will not let me change them. What is the work around for this? I would really like to install the new firefox.

You are describing an iTunes problem, not an iPod touch problem. Try posing in the iTunes forum.

Could not save Preferences because the file is locked, you do not have necessary access permissions, or another program is using the file. Use the 'Get Info' command in the Finder to ensure the file is unlocked and you have permission to access the file.

Pages '09 Document won't open - file missing

Hi all, I recently upgraded to Pages '09, and have created my first document it in, a four page newsletter. I attempted to open it this evening, and am getting an error message that says "Newsletter Name" couldn't be opened, the required index.xml file is missing.
If I attempt to open it in Pages, it doesn't even show up on my recent list. I can see it in my documents, though, and trying to open it there gives me the above message. Is there a way to recover the document, or am I doomed? Obviously, I've now learned to save a copy, but I've never had this happen and have created over 50 documents in Pages '06 and 08.
Oh, and I can do a "quick view" and see the document in small format.

I was having a similiar problem: Message-"The document [ ] cannot be opened. The file is not in the right format. The file might be corrupted, truncated or in a different format that than you expect."
I was able to figure out that for some reason Pages did not set itself as the default program to open Pages documents. Very strange.
Here's what I did: select the icon that represents the document, go to Finder menu and select File - Get Info, in 'Sharing and Permissions' section click on the 'key' icon and type in my password from the keychain, in the 'Open with...' section change the software selection to 'Pages', go to 'Sharing and Permissions' to lock the 'key' icon, close 'Get Info'.
Hope this helps anyone.

My elements 11 won't open files, can someone help?

I have photoshop elements 11. It was working and then I had to close the program and go do something else. When I turned my computer back on I couldn't get elements to open any of my files. It won't open Jpg or Raw. I've tried restarting my computer mulitple times and It hasn't changed. It still won't open files. It will freeze and then close out of the program. Can someone please help me? I just recently got this program for christmas and i'm really wanting it to work.

Please try this:
Solution 1:
1) Close Elements.
2) Hit on PSE desktop icon to launch welcome screen
3) Click Alt+Ctrl+Shift on your keyboad and with all three keys pressed click Photo editor. Do not release when you will see a dialog box asking you to delete the PSE preferences.
4) Hit ok and check now.
Solution 2:
1) Launch Editor.
2) Hit File->open and choose any small file of size < 1 MB and see if it opens fine
3) Try file->open as and choose any file and choose camera raw from file format and when shown ACR dialog box hit ok and will open file in editor.
I hope you are not importing fron any network location which might cause the process to slow or freeze depending on network settings and secutiry issues.
