QT/your computer is trying to tell you it doesn't know how to play the content you are trying to watch. Install and use the appropriate QT codec component or dedicated media player for each particular type of streaming content you are trying to view. Basically you need to find out what compression format is being used and the select a component or player made to display it.

ITunes + Quicktime won't run after install
I did an automatic upgrade to ITunes verson 8 from 7. After the upgrade, neither iTunes nor Quicktime would work. I then proceeded to do a complete uninstall of both items, to include deleting all directories and cleaning the registery so I could complete a fresh install of both items. After the fresh install, iTunes would work IF (and only if) it was started by the installation script. If I try to start iTunes after the installation, windows pops a window that says "Please wait while Windows configues iTunes," after which it prompts to restart the PC. This happens EVERY time. That is, iTunes will run ONE TIME correctly when it's started by the installation process at the conclusion of a fresh install, but it will not run again. Each time I get the windows message.
Quicktime will not run at all. It gives the error message "Error 41: Could not load or find the QuickTime ActiveX control." However, I can open the Quicktime preferences from the Control Panel.
I get no errors or any indications that the installation process had problems or that the items did not install correctly.
I'm running 32-bit Vista with SP1.
Any ideas would be appreciated.Bump to top.

I posted this in the iMac forum, but it was pointed out to me that you guys are probably better qualified to help...
A friend sent me some Quicktime movie files to look at and my iMac won't open them. I get audio only, no visuals. They were created in QT 10 and I can only run QT 7.6. I get Apple's (very unhelpful) 'you need additional software to run this movie...' error message but they don't say what I need.
Has anyone found a video viewer out there that will run QT movies? Basically, I think I'm probably screwed, but...
My QT will happily run other stuff, just not this. And it's important...
Grateful for any inights
Thanks
DavidConversion won't work either! Handbrake says it's not a valid file...
Was afraid of that. VLC and HandBrake probably doesn't like the MPEG-2/PCM non-muxed data in the MOV file container. (Both normally expect the data to be in the more common muxed MPEG-2/MP1 layered or MPEG-2/AC3 program/transport stream container.) Basically, iMovie '08/'09/'11 make the content QT edit compatible by expanding the GOP P- and B-Frame MPEG-2 video to all I-Frame MPEG-2 frame edit compatible video and converting the AC3 audio to AIFF (linear PCM) audion and placing the data in an MOV file container along with start and/or end time offsets to minimize drift in A/V synchronication. This usually is not a problem as long as the files are played back on a system with iMovie '08/'09/'11 installed or the files are converted on the originating system to a more common/universal fompression combination like H.264/AAC for distribution to users not having a recent version of iMovie installed.
I'm stumped...
About the only other QT/MPEG Streamclip possibility might be to purchase the QT MPEG-2 Playback Component ($19.99) which may be able to handle the the temporally synchronized M2V1/AIFF data in the MOV file container.
Can you post a sample segment for testing purposes. (I don't own an MPEG-2/AC3 camcorder, so I have no a I-Frame test video to experiment on.) -
Quicktime won't run due to "Quicktime 7.msi" cannot be found
Hi,
My problem is described below -
Recently whenever I try to open Quicktime or run a Quicktime movie or even visit the Apple.com website, a window appears on my computer saying "Windows is preparing to install." Then it changes to "Please wait while Windows configures Quicktime 7.0" An blue indicator starts running on the window then stops. The window changes to a new message saying "The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable. Click OK to try again, or enter an alternate path to a folder containing the instillation package 'Quicktime 7.msi' in the box below." The source link shown in the box, I've never heard of before. And I had no knowledge of even using that source. The window does not go away or resolve itself, since it cannot find that file to run Quicktime. I press cancel and the message says "An installation package for the product Quicktime 7.0 cannot be found. Try the installation again using a valid copy of the installation package 'Quicktime 7.msi'." with a button for OK. I'm left to press that button and then the window disappears, but the Quicktime program doesn't open and won't open because this window appears everything I try to open the program.
I've tried to download the recent Quicktime Player available on Apple.com, which is Quicktime 7.5.5 (I think, but it's whatever is on the website now). I've installed that version of Quicktime. Yet the same message continues to appear. I cannot find the Quicktime 7.msi file on my computer at all, I've searched for it many times and also cannot find anything on the internet that might help. I have been using Quicktime for the entire time I've had my computer - about 2 years - and never had a problem like this. I cannot open or use anything related to Quicktime because that window would appear and I can't get past it to play anything. And I don't know where I've gone wrong to cause this issue to come up.
If you have any suggestions or resolution, I would greatly appreciate it.
Thank you.Apparently windows 2000 does not meet the minimum requirements for QT7.5, so what you need to do is find out what version of QT7 does if one ever did, if not your probably going to have to install QT6.5, which may be the latest version 2000 can run?

hey, i've been trying to download the new itunes and quicktime, and ive already been through fixing one error that wouldn't let me d/l quicktime. now everytime i try to run quicktime it will open the .exe file then close, never bringing up the player or an error. because of that, itunes brings up a "itunes has encountered a problem and needs to close message". what do i need to do to get both of them open.

Error #-2093.
with that one, let's try this first.
uninstall QT from Add/Remove programs. then clear away any leftover program files and folders:
1. On the Start menu, click My Computer (or double-click My Computer on the Desktop).
2. In My Computer, open Local Disk.
3. Open Program Files.
4. Right-click on the QuickTime folder and click Delete from the shortcut menu.
5. Navigate to C:\Windows\system32\.
6. Remove the files QuickTime.qts and QuicktimeVR.qtx.
7. Restart your computer.
once we've got all the existing QuickTime scraped away, let's try a careful standalone QT 7.1.3 reinstall.
download and save a copy of the QT 7.1.3 standalone installer to your hard drive. (we'll run the install from there rather than online.) switch off antivirus and antispyware applications prior to the install.
Quicktime 7.1.3 Installers … get the one that doesn’t mention itunes
if that install goes through okay, does your itunes launch properly again?
(if you get an error message on the QT standalone reinstall, let us know what it says. include error message numbers if you're getting any.) -
ITunes and Quicktime won't run
I had itunes and QT working fine when I bought my Ipod. I bought my son a Nano and that is when everything went bad. I have tried everything the apple website has to offer. I am at the point where I was able to download and install the latest version of itunes and QT from the Apple website. I installed each separately. They seemed to install fine. When I click on either of them they open for a second and then close with no error message. I am using Windows XP Home. I have an old version of Norton 2002 on the computer that is no longer operable. I tried unistalling it, and that disables by ISP login. Needless to say I have issues. Can anyone help, because Apple and Microsoft sure won't. Thanks,
hi dukefafl!
hmmm. if both itunes and QT are failing to open when you try to launch them (with no error messages whatsoever), the first thing i worry about is infestation of the PC by Qoologic adware. (usually with that, people will see a brief "flash" of an itunes license screen when they try to open itunes ... but the symptom isn't universal.)
the free trial version of Ewido has been been cleaning that up for most people:
ewido anti-malware download
if no joy with that, we'll try checking through a few of the rarer causes of the "error message free" launch failures. (Your Norton is unlikely to be the culprit in this case ... the error message free launch failure associated with that typically only hits people with NIS 2005.)

I bought my girlfriend a IPOD Nano for Valentine's Day. When she tries to download ITunes and Quicktime on her 2004/2005 Dell with Windows XP Home Edition she gets an error message that says "ITunes has encountered a problem and has to shut down" and Quicktime says "Quicktime player has failed to initialize Error 2095, Please make sure Quicktime is properly installed on this computer."
We've removed and downloaded several times without any positive results.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
DELL Windows XPI'm having the same problem with Quicktime... except my error code is 2096. Need help and very frustrated...

WinVista: QuickTime won't run, steps on Java JRE, destroys Java
Noticed my Java desktop apps no longer load after installing QuickTime. Also cannot get the QT player to load. It loads, and then immediately exits. Any suggestions?
You might want to try updating Java from the Java control panel. I recall answering a post where where that was the issue. The version I have is: Java Platform, Standard Edition 6. Version 1.6.0 (build 1.6.0_01-b06) which I believe is the latest update. A firewall could also be something to consider.

How can I make Quicktime stop opening when I click a streaming media link?
I was very happily using Windows Media Player 9 for streaming video in Firefox, and it was working fabulously, until I installed Flip4Mac, and now when I click on a link within a web page to open a standalone player for steaming video (please see "Click here to open standalone player" link below web cam window on www.tappedintoelephants.com) it opens Quicktime instead of Windows Media Player. I would like it to go back to using WMP for the standalone player when I click that link. I tried unchecking the "steaming media" box in Quicktime MIME settings, I've uninstalled Flip4Mac, and reinstalled WMP, but still, when I click that link, it opens Quicktime and crashes the browser. Could anyone please tell me how I can tell Firefox to once again use WMP instead of Quicktime for the standalone player? As I said, unchecking the streaming media checkbox in QT MIME settings had no effect. Thank you very much. I appreciate your help!
I think what you should try is Settings>General>Accessibility>Vision>Speak Auto-text>Off.

Quicktime in Tiger package won't run
I upgraded from system 9.1 to Tiger and both Quick time and iDVD won't run. A red exclamation point error message appears saying that these applications are not supported. Any suggestions? I also increased the memory and still nothing works.
I would suggest the usual steps, repair permissions, and delete QuickTime's .plist
<small>located in
[YourProfile]/Library/Preferences/com.apple.quicktimeplayer.plist</small>
Otherwise, try to create a new Mac OS X user profile and see if that helps.
OR... try to re-install QuickTime.
Hope these help. -
QuickTime 7.1.5 installer won't run
The QuickTime 7.1.5 installer won't run. Installer says "QuickTime 7 cannot be installed on this computer." "This update requires less than MacOS X 10.4."
I looked in both the 7.1.5 and the 7.1.3 packages and could see no reference to the Two QuickTime plugins. The dates of the existing plugins differ a little from yours: pluginplugin is dated 14 Jan 2003, mod 15 April 2005 and web plugin is created 15 April 2005, mod same date.
Before I venture into these deep waters I'd like to be sure what actually loads these new plugins

Lost Playhead in QT with Streaming Media
We have 3 different computers in our house, Mac Pro, Mac Mini and PowerPC laptops. We used to stream media (radio, TV) from a series of websites, using Flip4Mac to convert Windows Media to compatible steams for QuickTime Pro. We would then save portions of the streamed media using the Select All function, cutting and pasting, etc. I could export shows from the streamed broadcasts to my iPod, etc. No longer. The playhead and selection bars have disappeared and the 'copy' and 'paste' are gone from the menus. When the streaming media come up, the phrase, "buffering..." briefly appears and then the bar next to the time in the browser becomes gray. The streaming begins without the playhead. Oh, yes, all the software is up to date. ....
However, if i re-load an older movie or download a video, i can still get these items. I went to see one of the geniuses at our local Apple Store, and after confirming that the functionality existed for the same streams in the store itself (also running Flip4Mac), explained the problem. Hours later, after everyone in the store had messed with my computer, i left with no solution, except to re-install Leopard. Of course, i wasn't going to do this without re-installing my preferences, files, etc., and after all this, still no playhead!
Someone out there has solved this problem. I know this because i read the solution a couple years ago here and resolved the issue. If anyone out there has solved this problem, please help! (Perhaps some Apple Developer is curious to know what kinds of bugs are out there and can set us straight?)So sorry. Sounds as if you have the same problem i had.
However, in addition to proving to myself that QT can be made to work by going to the Apple Store, as recounted earlier, i have now established the same thing at home, where i really needed it. It was brute force but successful. One of our older Power PC G4 laptops had the problem i have described, but the other did not appear to have it. The playhead was still there, but in the player, not in Pro. (We had never upgraded to Pro on this computer.) Tonight, i upgraded this computer to Pro and not only the playhead was there, but also the copy and paste functions. After installing a trial version of Flip4Mac, i verified that the playhead and other functions were preserved. I then went through the laborious process of compressing virtually every file related to audio components, QT files, and WMV files on the first computer. Finally, i trashed everything and transferred the components from the second computer. Et voila, after restarting, there was the playhead and other functions on my first computer again ---- and i am now able once again to save clips from the so-called 'pure stream' of the URL given eaerlier in this thread. So, indeed, there is some kind of configuration bug that is very difficult to eliminate except by an extreme measure like this. (Re-installing Flip4Mac and QuickTime didn't resolve the problem.
Good Luck with your own computer ---- but then perhaps you don't care whether you can save clips from a 'pure stream' ..... I really wish Apple would document this and resolve it, so people don't think it's something natural and inevitable. And that they would come up with a simpler solution! -
Ok - not sure if this goes in this section or not.. but it's a technical question.
My b/f bought me a Dell Laptop last week. It has the recommended minimum of everything adobe says it needs for photoshop CS3 (see below for 1721 specs)
When I installed it on the laptop - it was slow, but said it installed. But when I go to open up Photoshop, it opens the screen - and then just hangs. After about 5 minutes it says not responding and I close it. Any of the other programs that came with won't even get that far. I click on them and it gives the little "thinking" circle (as I call it.. lol) and then nothing.
I have read that CS3 has issues with Vista - but their site says the home premium should work. I've also read about 64 bit issues.. but the OS is 32 bit - so it's capable of running 32bit systems... I guess.
I called adobe yesterday after installing and reinstalling CS3 15+ times... with the same issue. I was on the phone for about 2 hours with them. Basically - they have NO CLUE what it would be since it installs fine and opens with no error messages. I checked the log files and there is nothing in there I see that says any kind of error.
I have disable windows defender, uninstalled McAfee and google desktop (all are known to cause issues with CS3), I have ALL non MS startup services turned off.. I have turned off the MS users control.. all suggested by the adobe tech.
I have installed using the run as administrator. Nothing. Created a new admin account and installed on that user and opened on reg admin account. Nothing. (again typical things that correct cs3 install issues)
The last thing the guy said was that it might be a video issue. I checked and there aren't any issues mentioned and no driver updates listed.
We tryed installing this on my b/f's laptop. He bought the exact one I have (except his is red.. mine blue.. lol) and it does the EXACT same thing...
So today we called dell. they say it's a software issue and won't answer any questions for free. Apparently only hardware support is free... But they won't accept this is a hardware conflict with the software..
errrrr
Anybody have any clues on this?

I have tried installing from the DVD and also from the zip file. the zip file was extracted to the hard drive brfore I ran it - and I ran it as administrator.
And when it stalls - it gives the (NOT RESPONDING) tag on the window - which usually means that even if I leave it (and I have for up to 20 minutes) - still nothing.
Here's the update from my dealings with DEll today...
Dell tech support guy told me that it was a know issue that CS3 WON'T run on Vista and that Adobe is working the issue
Told them that I knew others that were running it on Vista and it worked fine. They had no answer.
Then I waited for the Technical support manger to call. This is after expressing my displeasure to the technical supervisor about them trying to pawn this issue off on anyone else but themselves. Why can't they go grab a 1721 off the shelf and replicate the issue and try to figure it out from there?!?!?!
I used to work on a network helpdesk.. if I tried to pull that crap answer without trying to replicate the issue and AT LEAST try to find an answer.. I wouldn't have lasted very long at all!!!!
The Tech manager told me to call customer support and ask for an OS swap (from vista to XP) because they don't know what the problem is and so it muct be a Vista compatibility issue
I call customer support. They say that they no longer will give out XP since it is a step backwards. And to install XP on the machine ourselves (even a liscensed copy) would void the warranty. They suggest I talk to sales about swapping the laptop out with a "more compatible" one. Which isn't a totally bad idea since I really do think it is an AMD/ATI conflict.
They transfer me to Sales.. ohh - you used the Employee Purchase program.. you need to talk to them.. and they transfer me.
The EPP people tell me.. ohhhh you didn't actually go through us since you bought it off the Dell Outlet store. So they transfer me.
The dell outlet store says they will be more than happy to swap me out to an Intel based machine.
Only catch is the Intels are more expensive. They don't have any for the price we paid for the amd's. Fot about $40 more I can get one with a slower processer, a gig less ram, no dvd writer, but with a 160gb hd. To get compatible to mine - would be about $150 more.
And they only have silver in the low end, and black or brown in the higher. Not that I really give a s@!t what the color is.. but it brings up the main reason I am sooo pissed abput all of this....
Why should I have to pay more money, settle on doing without option/features want/need.. just because THEY don't want to take the time to figure out what the real issue is?!?!?! Why isn't it them doing these calls and doing all this troubleshooting.. Why am I being peanilzed for THEM not wanting to do their jobs....
Told the B/F that I am done with Dell. That I don't want the laptop anymore and I don't want any other one from them. He says he'll pay the extra and get me the other one.. but that isn't the point....
Not sure what my next move is. -
Linux 3.12 and streaming media on a Dell XPS 13: kernel panic
Hi all,
Shortly after upgrading from Linux 3.11.6 to 3.12, I started getting kernel panics while playing streaming media (in particular from Youtube and The Daily Show). Here is a camera shot. The crash would not take place immediatly, but perhaps after 15 minutes of streaming. After downgrading to Linux 3.11.6 everything works fine. Therefore, it is clear to me that the issue is related to the Linux 3.12 kernel, but this is all I know.
The fifth-to-last line from the camera shot reads:
[11438.332699] RIP [<ffffffff8129e160>] __sg_page_iter_start+0x20/0x20
A quick Google search reveals that __sg_page_iter_start is a function inside the scatterlist.h library in the Linux kernel, which apparently deals with memory paging, but my knowledge about this stuff is so poor that the message is almost meaningless. I would greatly appreciate if someone could give me a hint about this.
I did not find anything useful in the journal, but here are the last few journal lines for 2 different crash instances:

In the first journal log, the following line calls my attention:
Nov 15 00:26:02 xps kernel: perf samples too long (2530 > 2500), lowering kernel.perf_event_max_sample_rate to 50100
However, this seems to be a normal occurrence after playing games (https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=170471), so I would guess this is not related to the kernel panic.
For reference, here are some hardware specifications of my Dell XPS 13:

Hopefully this should be sufficient information, I've linked to this thread too. I've also mentioned I'm willing to beam one at someone from Amazon, with 2-day shipping to the USA the Pluggable branded adapter is just under NZD$40, which I can easily live with.
===========================================================================================================
USB3 gigabit ethernet adapters with the ASIX AX88179 chipset (LevelOne USB0401-V3, Plugable USB3-E1000, SIIG JU-NE0211-S1 and others) are experiencing kernel panics in usb_hcd_map_urb_for_dma since 3.12. The issue does not seem to directly correlate with low or high network activity, occurring seemingly at random. Some panics occurred less than 5 minutes from boot and tens of megabytes of network transfer, while on other occasions it would be stable for multiple days with tens to hundreds of gigabytes of line-rate throughput and several sleep/resume cycles.
Both my Sony Vaio Pro 13 and another user reporting this issue on the Arch forums [1] are Intel-based, my USB controller is an 8086:9c31 (Lynx Point LP), the other is reported as a C210/7 series (unknown PID). A third with a Haswell Dell XPS has attempted my workaround and reports similar success.
I have a mediocre quality photo of my laptop's screen from one of these panics [2], the call trace - which is similar but not identical between my machine and that of the other user reporting the issue - is as follows:

So far as I can tell, the driver is unaffected as late as 3.11.6, but problematic as of 3.12 (and still affected in 3.13-rc5). The history of drivers/net/usb/ax88179_178a.c for this time period yields this patch, which at least in my somewhat limited understanding appeared a likely candidate. I've reverted this on my system - against several linux-next builds from the last 3-4 weeks - and have had no issues with this network controller since.
commit 3804fad45411b48233b48003e33a78f290d227c8
Author: Ming Lei <[email protected]>
Date: Thu Aug 8 21:48:25 2013 +0800
USBNET: ax88179_178a: enable tso if usb host supports sg dma
This patch enables 'can_dma_sg' flag for ax88179_178a device
if the attached host controller supports building packet from
discontinuous buffers(DMA SG is possible), so TSO can be enabled
and skb fragment buffers can be passed to usb stack via urb->sg
directly.
With the patch, system CPU utilization decreased ~50% and throughput
increased by ~10% when doing iperf client test on one ARM A15 dual
core board.

Unfortunately I have not retained the built kernel from a broken 3.12 build, so the system information below reflects the patched linux-next kernel I am running currently.
I understand this may be a somewhat obscure piece of hardware, I am willing to assist by drop-shipping one to someone from Amazon (or local country equivalent if the price is not extortionate) should it be required.
