Quicktime wont play avi

for some reason my quicktime (now 7.1) plays mpg's fiine but when i ask it to play an avi it just has a white screen for the duration. Anyone have a similar problem or can help? thanks people

Avi's have like a million codecs so it can be hit or miss depending on which one the maker of the movie used. However, most I get can be played using quicktime with the Divx codecs installed. In addition, if that does now work, I've had good luck using VLC to play other AVIs.
Download Divx at www.divx.com
Download VLC from www.videolan.org

    Go to Adobe.com........
If you can see their site...it about 99.9%, you have the flash plug-in...But, for lack of doing anything else... re-install the flash plug-in...At one point in installing the plug-in, make sure you close out all bowsers.....

AVI is a legacy file container originated by Microsoft back in 1992 and which has not been officially supported for more than a decade. Like the container, many of the codecs commonly used to create AVI content are also "legacy" compression formats most often supported on PC/Windows platforms. In fact, some codecs have never been transcoded for Mac use. Of those that have, many never made the transition to Mac OS X or the transition to Intel-based platforms. Those codecs that are still supported on the Mac can normally be found in the avi to quicktime converter available as an online download. While some common AVI compression formats may be supported by the QT X Player app, QT 7 currently provides a more compatible AVI playback environment for most "legacy" compression formats. If the codec(s) used in your AVI files are not supported by the avi to quicktime converter for QT use, you can try the VLC media player which may still support more esoteric compression formats. If  VLC does not support the files, the normal approach is to discover which specific audio and/or video codecs were used to create the file and perform an Internet search to see if a compatible Mac component is available for download.

  • Quicktime wont play my movie

quicktime wont play my video cd's. when i drag and drop... it says there is an error opening it up.

Quicktime has it's limitations and can't, natively, play certain video formats.
Try VLC.  It should be able to play anything you throw at it.

  • QuickTime wont play .mov file

Does anyone know why QuickTime wont play a .mov file from an iLearn 08 training DVD. It would not import into iMovie, which is what the file was for, iMovie training. When I try to play it tells me that QuickTime does not have the software to play the clip then directs me to the quick time components page. The file has a 1920X1080 dimension and it has a HDV 1080i60, Integer (Big Endian) codec. I have downloaded various codec packages for quicktime such as flip4mac, perian, etc. Can any one help me out?

    Hi,
I actually did contact the publisher and they were very helpful. Here is a copy of the email they sent me. It should solve your problem. Good luck!
Thank you for contacting Peachpit Press. We apologize for the errors with
these files. The QuickTime clips used in chapters 5 and 6 were encoded by
the author using the HDV 1080i60 codec. iMovie 08 only works with the 1080i
codec. At the time this book shipped, iMovie 08 was not available for
    testing.
New files are available at peachpit.com here:
    http://www.peachpit.com/store/product.aspx?isbn=0321502671
Click on the Updates tab and the page will refresh, showing you the
replacement files. You may also request a replacement DVD.
    Sincerely
    Dominic

  • Quicktime Wont Play MPG Files

    Hi,
Just bought my first Mac - loving it. Only issue I have so far is that I have a load of video camera clips with an .mpg extension, which I copied onto an external drive when I had my PC. Now when I come to play these files, it comes up with "The movie xxxxxx.mpg can't be opened. You may need to install additional software to open this type of file.
Wherever I look, it says Quicktime will play .mpg files, so I can't understand why they wont work. All the photo's on the same drive have gone into iPhoto no problem. When I go onto "tell me more" it starts going on about downloading additional media support. Not sure if I'm missing something simple!
    Please help!
    Thanks,
    Darran.

Yea...I did this when I got my Mac for Christmas 2009. I can watch the videos no problem...WITHOUT SOUND! If I use VLC everything works right, but I want to be able to burn the videos to DVD to watch somewhere else too. I bought a Mac because this was supposed to be easier...NOT!
Thinking of going back to a PC. At least everyone knows they have issues.

  • Quicktime wont play video ANY VIDEO and I cant fix it

I have downloaded all of the software on the quicktime website and it still wont play any of my videos. all of my stuff has different extensions and i have tried a ton of varieties of them but still nothing.
Does anyone know what i could use to fix this.
I have been looking in the forms all day but i cant find any suggested software at all.
Please Email me at [email protected]
This is not what i expected from apple or any of its products.

What is the format or file extension you're trying to open via QuickTime Player?
QT can open dozens of file formats and sometimes you need third party components or codecs to view non supported formats.

  • Quicktime wont play my xvid-imagine files, even after downloading the componets it said i needed

I have uninstalled and re-installed quicktime several different times. Every time, it tells me that I am missing componets. So I went to the componet page and downloaded the xvid (thinking thats what i needed considering thats the file my movies are in), but it still wont play. I have also tried changing the options to the safe mode (gdi only) and still nothing. Is there anything else I can do??

Try using http://ninite.com/java/ninite.exe to install Java. Please note that even though you download it you have to double click it to get it to run and install.

  • My mac wont play .avi files

My macbook stopped playing .avi files that I download from the internet a few months ago.  I assumed they were just broken links, but now its past coincidence.  I have perian, and had DivX.  I removed DivX (heard the 2 clash) but still nothing works.
I thought I would get rid of Perian and try divX, but when I "removed perian" it just said "removed" and didnt actually uninstall.
I also have a bunch of other stuff that I don't use (to my knowledge), wondered if any of it was important:
    Flip4Mac
    Growl
    MacFUSE

If the AVI files are "links" that feed off streaming content, it's possible they have all been removed on the respective streaming severs by the original source, depending on their age.
With that said, Flip4Mac is the Microsoft supported plugin to allow playback of Windows Media Content inside QuickTime. You can check your version & update if needed here:
    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows/products/windows-media-player/wmcompo nents
It's also possible they may be Divx encoded files. Requiring the Divx decoder plugin:
    http://divx.com
Growl & MacFUSE are generally not related to Media Files. ( Google their names )
Also, Give VLC player a try. There isn't much of anything it won't play ( actually, try this first. ):

  • Quicktime wont play anything

I recently downloaded a .mov file and it played fine, but now quicktime suddenly stopped playing it. I double click on the file and it takes a while for quicktime to even open and when it finally does it wont play the file. It opens and the movie file's name is changed to "Untitled 2" in the taskbar. There is no audio or video either. Then when I go to File->Open File and click on the one i want to play, it takes a second and then an error message appears that says:
    Buffer overrun detected!
    Program: C:\Program Files\QuickTime\QuickTimePlayer.exe
A buffer overrun has been detected which has corrupted the program's internal state. The program cannot safely continue execution and must now be terminated.
I've uninstalled and reinstalled quicktime several times and I also downloaded the latest Quicktime/iTunes and it still gives me this message. I also can't play any other of my files in quicktime.
Anybody know what to do to fix this?

I recieved the same thing a couple of months ago and started to research it but never followed thru with it. I monitored it with a firewall at the time and still have what I jogged down in a notebook.
A computer you were communicating with at IP address ** has attempted to access a different port then exspected. Port 6970, this port is commonly used by Gate Trasher Trojan. Gate Trasher Trojan is a Trojan Horse program. This port 6970 is also used by Real Player and QT to recieve streaming media data.
That is what I had written at the time, certainly not a fix, but may provide some insight.

  • Quicktime not playing avi

    hi
i'm using Lion (the latest version as downloaded in February 2012) and QUicktime doesnt play any .avi files. ever since i got my mac book pro a few weeks its never actually played avi files.
    any help??

Download and install Perian from  http://perian.org/
You should read this support page  http://perian.org/#support   in case you need to delete older codecs.  In Macintosh HD/Library/Quicktime/ delete any files relating to DivX (Perian already has them), particularly any DivX extension to Safari. However it should be noted that Perian is not an internet plugin and will not play DivX files imbedded on a website. For that you will need the DivX Player browser plugin available from  http://www.divx.com/en/software/mac

  • Why won't QuickTime player play avi files?

Suddenly, QuickTime player on my MacBook won't play AVI files. Any ideas?
    Thanks.

Install QuickTime Player 7.6.6 (in addition to QuickTime X). Lion users can run two versions of QuickTime.

  • Quicktime not play .avi's

Sorry if I overlooked a topic similar to this already posted...anyways, I thought QuickTime was supposed to play .avi files but it's not. Whenever I open an .avi file in QuickTime it gives me the message "Some necessary QuickTime software is missing. It may be available on QuickTime Web site." So I click continue to open a web page where I thought I'd find something to help me out but I get nothing. Any thoughts? Anybody know of any links you could give me that has plug-ins or something for QuickTime that would allow me to play .avi's again? Thanks a lot, I appreciate it!

    Andrew,
Welcome to the forums. If you search this forum using the subject AVI you should get lots of hits. We've had several discussions here on AVI related topics.
Basically, there are several ways of encoding video data in AVI file "wrappers" - some of which can't be used with QuickTime.
If you just want to playback the files, VLC (as was suggested) seems to work well for me.
To find out how your video data is encoded, open the file in QuickTime and then select Window>Show Movie Info
You will see the video format. If VLC doesn't work for you, let us know what form your video data is in and we may be able to suggest some other approaches.

  • QuickTime X plays avi files ???

    Hi,
I just upgraded to Snow Leopard, and for no reason, I tried to play an avi file with QT... and it played !
I thought that QuickTime didn't play avi files...
I installed no codecs anything, there's hardly a non-apple software on my mac ...

I thought that QuickTime didn't play avi files
That AVI file contained audio and video playable with a bundled codec. Some do; others require a tool such as Perian, and still others can't be played in Mac OS X. AVI is a container, not a format, and no single codec or component will guarantee that any computer, Mac or PC, can play every AVI.
