Quicktime X and iPhoto 8 (version 7.1.5)?
Ok, so I installed Snow Leopard yesterday. I noticed that the Quicktime movies that I have in iPhoto 8 (which are .mov) will not play when I double click on them. The only way I can get the video to play is to find the actual source of the video, and launch it from there. Once I do this, it will play flawlessly in Quicktime X, but why can't I do this in iPhoto? ***? Has anyone else encountered this issue?
After I installed SL on 4 computers...all four allow me to view a .mov video taken by iPhone from within iPhoto 09 by double clicking them...
Maybe in 08 version there is a compatibility issue...
Maybe try to enter the file associations and make sure .mov is set to open with the new QT X...right click on the file source and highlight open with and see what the default is...

Lion and iPhoto and Nikon Camera
Hello. I don't know if this is a Lion or iPhoto problem. So I'm posting this here. I have a Nikon Coolpix 990 camera. I took some photos today. When I attempted to import the photos to my iMac (2009, i7) running Lion with iPhoto 09 version 8.1.2, the camera wasn't recognized and I could not import my photos. However, when I connected the camera to my Macbook Pro late 2008 running Snow Leopard v. 10.6.8 and iPhoto 08 version 7.1.5, the camera was recognized and the import was successful. I rebuilt my iMac's iPhoto library but I have not attempted to sync my camera to it as I deleted the photos. Why was I unable to import the photos to my iMac?
zozThe pictures were able to be uploaded to iPhoto using a card reader. Apparently, in Lion, support from Nikon is no longer provided.

I just updated tosystem10.6.8. I am running Iphoto 08 version 7.1.5 Quick time movies will not open and play directly in Iphoto. When I move them to my desktop they play fine.Quick time 10.0 What do I need to do?

Can't Update QuickTime and iPhoto
When attempting to download and install the latest version of QuickTime and iPhoto via Software Update, I got the error message, "None of the checked updates could be saved. You do not have appropriate access privileges." I have two User Accounts on this Mac, both are Admin accounts, and I've tried updating from both accounts. I've repaired privileges via Disk Utility. Why can't I download these updates?
Same issue with the QT 7.3 update, I get this message...

The Installer package has been moved to the Trash. To try again, open the package from the Finder.
Tried repairing permissions with disk utility, it ran with a few warnings and 3 unexpected ACLs on the private/var/root dirs, but that did not help.
Had keychain problems when I did the Leopard upgrade, had to reset the root password to fix. Wondering if the problematic Leopard upgrade did some other damage? -
I have Mavericks on my iMac and the latest version of iPhoto 9.5.1 (902.17) but no book, card, calendar, album, slideshow, print and order prints options under Share, which still shows Set Desktop. Any ideas please?

I have a 3 year old MacBook Pro with MAC OSX 10.6.8, iPhoto ’09 version 8.1.2 and have downloaded two software programs: one is Aperture 3.2 and the other is Photoshop Elements 9 (which I got from a friend who didn’t need it).
I am totally happy with the way iPhoto organizes my photos and how I can work with iMovie to create slide shows with music from iTunes, etc.
I have been shooting mostly high resolution jpegs and I continue to learn more and more about photography, post processing etc. I realize that the small adjustments I can make in iPhoto are good, and are adequate most of the time. However, a have started to experiment with shooting RAW images and would like to go the next step, ie. post processing.I am totally technically challenged and need SIMPLE, INTUITIVE programs and am certainly NOT anywhere ready for Photoshop CS whatever!
After having these programs sit on my computer, I decided to try to see if I could figure them out. When I opened Aperture, this is what first comes up.

Upgrading a library from previous versions of Aperture 3 generally takes a few minutes or less, though larger libraries will take longer. After that, Aperture 3.2 will upgrade your library's thumbnails, but you can use the application during that time.
Tip: To open a different library, quit Aperture and hold the Option key down while starting Aperture

I have heard horror stories about moving your entire library to Aperture, ending up with 2 libraries, etc. etc. hence my previous reluctance in attempting Aperture. In addition, many of my photography friends are saying: Go with Lightroom 3.....you’ll love it!
So here is my dilemma. I don’t want to mess around with my iPhoto library. All I want to be able to do, is to isolate a few photos, export them to Aperture, Elements, and work on them there, then bring them back into iPhoto.
Can I do this? Should I forget about Aperture and Elements and look at purchasing yet another program like Lightroom?Export those few photos via the File ➙ Export ➙ File Export menu option with Kind = Original to the Desktop. Then import them into the Aperture library. That would keep one copy in your iPhoto library and another in your Aperture library to edit, etc.
You can use Photoshop Elements 9 from within iPhoto as your editor of choice. However, if you edit a raw file in iPhoto with PSE9 the resulting edited version must be saved outside the iPhoto Library and imported back in as a new file. For editing jpegs just do a Save (not a Save As) and it all will be kept within iPhoto.
Using Photoshop or Photoshop Elements as Your Editor of Choice in iPhoto.
1 - select Photoshop or Photoshop Elememts as your editor of choice in iPhoto's General Preference Section's under the "Edit photo:" menu.
2 - double click on the thumbnail in iPhoto to open it in Photoshop. When you're finished editing click on the Save button. If you immediately get the JPEG Options window make your selection (Baseline standard seems to be the most compatible jpeg format) and click on the OK button. Your done.
3 - however, if you get the navigation window
that indicates that PS wants to save it as a PS formatted file. You'll need to either select JPEG from the menu and save (top image) or click on the desktop in the Navigation window (bottom image) and save it to the desktop for importing as a new photo.
This method will let iPhoto know that the photo has been editied and will update the thumbnail file to reflect the edit..
NOTE: With Photoshop Elements the Saving File preferences should be configured as shown:
I also suggest the Maximize PSD File Compatabilty be set to Always. In PSE’s General preference pane set the Color Picker to Apple as shown:
Note: to switch between iPhoto and PS or PSE as the editor of choice Control (right)-click on the thumbnail and select either Edit in iPhoto or Edit in External Editor from the contextual menu. If you use iPhoto to edit more than PSE re-select iPhoto in the iPhoto General preference pane. Then iPhoto will be the default editor and you can use the contextual menu to select PSE for your editor when desired.

I can no longer import pictures to my ibook (OSX version 10.6.8) using iphoto 09 version 8.1.2 and now get message that file is in an unrecognizable format. What is wrong? Same camera as before.

Hold down the option (or alt) key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library'
Import a few pics into this new, blank library. Is the Problem repeated there? -
I have quicktime pro and it does NOT have the screen record mode that Quicktime is suppose to have. Can I uninstall it and go back to an older version that would have screen recording? If so, how? Step by step needed. Thank you for your time.
Did you remove Quicktime X?
On a normal install Quicktime 7 is installed in the Utilities folder and Quicktime Pro in the main Applications folder.
You will need to reinstall OS X to get Quicktime X back if you have deleted it.
I notice yor profile says 10.5.8. Quicktime X is only available on 10.6 and above. -
I have a MacBookPro with OS 10.6.8. It has no updates. This version contains Iphoto 11, version 9.2.3. I would like to upgrade my operating system to 10.9.5 or later. Is this possible and how best to proceed? How will this affect iPhoto?
Thanks, JeffIf you have a mid/late 2007 MBP you can install the latest OSX that is available, on your MBP. Mavericks (10.9) has been replaced by Yosemite (10.10) and is no longer available in the App store.
You choices are Lion (10.7), Mt.Lion (01.8) (both $20) or Yosemite (free). The first two are available from the Apple online web site. Yosemite can be downloaded from the App store.

How can I get to email photos at higher resolution?
My "iPhoto" or "Mail" automatically reduces photos to about 40 KB .
My photos, taken with a common Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ20 include flora which I send to a publisher.
I am fairly new to my MacBook (Mac S X Version 10.6.8). I have been using it for a year.
I found I could not successfully send Large or Full size photos.
A few days ago I downloaded a new version of iPhoto (iPhoto '11 version 9.2.1).
Again, although I get the option of choosing to send small/medium/large//full size photos, it actually only sends them as "Small" (ie about 40kb) which is useless to publish. If I drag a picture onto the desktop (where my EXIF tells me it is full size) then attach it to an email by dragging, againg the sent email is at "small" size ~40KB).
My ISP (Westnet) tells me that their maximum accepted size is 12 MB.
I suspect that I have failed to set up iPhoto for this purpose. (I am well into retirement but, although geriatric, did study University Physics about half a century ago)Also, just a note. iMac PPC is about iMacs that were available up to early 2006. iMac Intel is for iMacs that were made available early in to 2006 to present. When opening Iphoto (Iphoto 9 version 8.1.2) I went from hundreds of photos to 0. I looked in my harddrive and could not locate the pictures under library or photos. I tried rebuilding the system (ctl. alt. and opeing the program). I would assume all my pictures are lost except for when my screen saver runs, I still see all of my old photos. How can I retrieve my photos?
go in to finder than photos they should be somwhere in there. after you find them select add to iphoto

I am using iphoto '09 version 8.1.2. (424). Today a few photos will not open. I can see them as thumbnails but when I try to open them they start to open and then a big ! mark appears. I have not had this problem before. Can you help
The ! turns up when iPhoto loses the connection between the thumbnail in the iPhoto Window and the file it represents.
Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
If that fails:
Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .

I have a MAC and use IPHOTO and had used Adobe Elements 9 as the external Editor and IPHOTO as default. NOW I upgraded to Adobe elements 12 and IPHOTO only recognoizes Adobe Elements 9??? HOW do I make it go to the new external editor?? I appreciate any help you can provide?
You need to reset the external image editor in iPhoto's Advanced preference pane to the right version. I assume there's an Adobe Photoshop Elements 12 folder in your Applications folder. This screenshot is for PSE 10 but would be the same for 12:

i have the latest version of free Quicktime, Itunes and unable to view video on my PC all i get is a pink screen the audio is OK i have uninstalled and installed several times same problem, i have a Iphone 4 and unable to view the content.
Open your QuickTime control panel (either via the Control panels, or by going "Edit > Preferences > QuickTime Preferences" in the Quicktime Player). In the Advanced tab, uncheck Enable Direct3D video acceleration:
... and click OK. Quit and restart the QuickTime Player prior to checking to see if the settings change has had any effect.
