QuickTime X: do I need Final Cut Pro to watch QT movie?

We hired a producer to film a teen educational video. I have the .mov versions saved but Quicktime X won't play them.
I get the message "QT can't play this file". When I choose 'more info' I get the message below. Is there an alternative to purchasing Final Cut Pro?
QuickTime Player: Playing media supported by Apple video editing applications
Last Modified: August 27, 2009
Article: HT3523
Summary
Apple video editing applications use codecs that add support for media formats used during editing and by certain video cameras. QuickTime Player can play many of these media formats if the appropriate video editing application is installed on your computer.
Products Affected
QuickTime 7 (OS X), QuickTime X
Final Cut Studio installs the following codec components:
Apple Intermediate Codec, AVC-Intra, DVCPRO HD, HDV, IMX, Uncompressed 10-bit 4:2:2, and XDCAM HD/EX/HD422.
Final Cut Express installs the following codec components:
Apple Intermediate Codec, Uncompressed 10-bit 4:2:2

If the files were made by FCP it's possible that the codecs used would also only be supported by machine that have FCP installed.
Ask the authors to send you a file that uses H.264 video and AAC audio.

OK, the hosts have moved this to the incorrect forum, you need to post in the FCS forum here:

Post a short summary of what the problem is, and when it occurs. Describe your workflow.
Any other info you can give will be helpful.

  • Do I need Final Cut Pro HD when I have Final Cut Studio?

I will be starting my second project on my new mac and using final cut pro. It will be an instructional DVD. This is my first posting and I guess my first attempt at reaching out (baby steps).
I will be borrowing an HD camera (some consumer grade). My Question is do I need Final Cut HD when I have Final Cut Studio installed. I notice Final Cut Pro 5.1.4 has HD import and export settings.
Also, since I have mentioned my project is there any quick reference ideas for a learn to play an instrument DVD, CD or anything.
And lastly as I wonder off my thread a little. Is this Discussion forum my quickest way of getting an answer, I mean is there anyone who will let me bug them from time to time?
    Thanks

Forgot to welcome you to the forum... Welcome.
Before you jump into this project you may want to do some research. The format you are talking about is HDV, highly compressed and some would say difficult to edit with. A search here on HDV will give you plenty to read and probably point you to some interesting articles.
Might also consider why you want to shoot HD at all right now since you will most likely be going to Standard Def for distribution.
You'll find that if you just check in and browse the topics every day or so you'll pick up lots of good information (and probably a few laughs)
If you're looking for examples for this type of project, just hop down to your local music store. Most have "How To" DVD's for sale.
    Good Luck

  • Audio sounds great in Quicktime Player but horrible in Final Cut Pro

I'm working with a 16-bit wav file that sounds great in the quicktime player but once I bring it into Final Cut Pro 6 and play it back, it sounds like the quality has degraded quite a bit. I've tried setting audio playback quality to high in preferences, but this has not helped.

    Hi -
Open the wav file in Quicktime 7 and export it as a 48Khz AIFF file.
Import that file into FCP and see if that solves your problem.

  • Do you need final cut pro to use motion 5?

I was wondering if I can just download Motion 5 and not final cut pro x?

No, you will need to either export a copy of the clip in your iMovie library, or you can use the Finder. Exporting is easiest and safest.  If you want to use the original media, locate your iMovie Library and right click on it.  Select "Show Package Contents" from the contextual menu.  Find the folder for your project, open it and then look for a folder called "Orginal Media" this is where your clips are stored.  DO NOT MOVE THESE CLIPS.  From here you can drag clips into Motion's Layer List or canvas and work with them.  Just remember, don't change or move files inside your library.

  • Best quicktime export settings - compression - from final cut pro

i have done this for a while. still don't know.
to translate an ntsc 24p project onto a dvd, which export settings (compressor)do you use in final cut pro? i use current settings, and once i am done with idvd ("best quality") it just doesn't look high quality. is this an idvd question?

    I didn't know iDVD could handle 24fps project. Or is it a 29.97 (23.98 with a pulldown).
Best quality in iDVD just means that it works on it longer to compress it more to fit more on disk. Have you tried Best Speed version?

I hope you find one of us and can pay him or her well for their expertise and patience.
You should also invest in any of several of the FCP books on the market to have around after your instruction is finished.

  • Final Cut Pro - Can the video move pre subframe?

I recently have two videos. And I want want to synchronize these two videos. But I found that the video can only be moved pre frame and the sound of these two video cannot match perfectly.  So I detach the audio of the 2nd video and I try to synchronize my "1st video" and "the audio of the 2nd video" first. My "1st video" and "the audio of the 2nd video" match perfectly because "the audio of the 2nd video" can be moved pre subframe. However, "the audio of the 2nd video" and the "2nd video" itself don't match perfectly because the audio can be moved pre subframe  but the video can only be moved pre frame.
    How can synchronize everything perfectly?

When you shoot with two cameras, if you want perfect synchronicity,  you must lock the video at the time of the recording by using cameras that allow for "gen lock" which uses the sync from either an independent sync generator, or the video of one of the cameras as a reference to lock the cameras together.
    More on Gen Lock here:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Genlock
Without an electronically locked signal, you have the result you are having.
Within FCP, the audio can be moved at the subframe level, but not the video, which must be moved at the frame interval. In most editorial situations, the subframe offset of the cameras does not pose a problem, since the slight temporal shift will be masked by the dramatic image shift of the edit anyway, but I could see where it would be a problem in scientific, effects, or compositing work.

  • HT4926 If I download Final Cut Pro X, can I move it or re-download it to a new machine later?

If I download FCP X, can I move it to another machine later? I'm thinking of buying a new machine, but don't want to wait until then for the software.

Yes, FCP X is completely self-contained and you can copy it onto a memory stick, SD card or hard drive and put it on any computers you own.
It's worth keeping a copy on a DVD or SD card in case you ever "lose" your normal one as it's much quicker than downloading from the AppStore.

  • Final Cut Pro X and Mavericks

I am running Lion on my iMac. I have a lot of videos on an external connected harddisk.
I want to buy AppleTV to show my videos on my HD TV.
My iMac from midt 2010 has a 3,3 GHz Intel Core i3 prosessor  and 4GB 133 MHz DDR3 memory.
    OS X Lion 10.7.5.
Will Final Cut work with Mavericks or will Mountain Lion do?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Final Cut Pro X will work without any problem in your Mac. Note that the most recent Final Cut Pro X version (which is the only one available in the Mac App Store) is only compatible with OS X Mavericks, so you should run OS X Mavericks.
The only problem you have is that your iMac is "too old" (in case you are a professional user that needs the best performance) with an "old" GPU. This means that you should not expect the same experience as on a Late 2013 iMac or the Late 2013 Mac Pro.
Note that you do not need Final Cut Pro to watch videos, because it is an app to create videos and movies. I tell you this because you only mention that you have a lot of videos, in case you thought you need Final Cut Pro to watch them

  • HT4722 how many computers can i install final cut pro on

I need Final Cut Pro X for work at my church.  If I buy on the app store, can I load on all three computers at the church, or do I have to buy a seperate copy for each computer?

Unless you own and control the machines, you need to buy separate copies.
