Quicktime x - Pro Res quandary

I have Quicktime x on my Macbook. There has never been an earlier version, so I am unable to install Quicktime 7. The problem is Quicktime X will not play my Pro res HQ files smoothly. So I have to connect my hard drive to my old Macbook Pro that has QT 7, to be able to check the files properly.
Other people have reported this problem with QTX. Is there another player I can install that plays Pro Res files smoothly? I've tried installing QT 7, but as soon as it sees QTX it refuses permission.
I'm going round in circles. Help appreciated.

You don't install QuickTime 7, you install the QuickTime 7 player. The installer is on your Snow Leopard install disc.

  • Apple ProRes QuickTime Decoder  - Both types say I have "a newer version installed", but I can't view Pro-Res files on either type of machine.

I'm trying to view a Pro-Res file from Final Cut Pro on machines that have Quicktime Pro, but having no luck.  I've tried installing the "
Apple ProRes QuickTime Decoder " for both Windows and Mac (on the correct machines), but I keep getting "You already have a newer version of this installed" on each machine, and can't finish.  Needless to say, the Pro-Res file will not play on either machine, and there seems to be no way to remove a "newer version" and install this one.  Thanks for any suggestions.

    Rob,
There is no quicktime folder there. And no quicktime program is installed when I try to install iTunes. The only reason I tried installing quicktime in standalone was because the itunes install was not actively going to the quicktime part of its installation.
I've tried removing everything and only installing iTunes. But even after deleting the physical files, using the WIndows Install cleanup tool, and cleaning up my registry, the quicktime portion of the iTunes install doesn't complete, and I keep getting "unknown" errors from the crash prevention program, and from what I can see it's because there's no physical Quicktime program installed.
As for other accounts, no I cannot start it up with other accounts, I keep getting the "Unknown" error and there is no physical files for quicktime anywhere.
And selective startup doesn't seem to work as there is NO qttask option when I run selective startup.
So, I seem to be out of options, and thing else I could try?

  • Quicktime PRO-RES 422 Files... What is the best format for output in Adobe Premier?

I have recently enrolled on a university film makers course and up until this point i have been a Windows user. At the university everyone uses Final Cut Pro as this seems to be the standard software, at least at my level. My question is this; I have a bunch of Quicktime Pro-Res 422 files and i was wondering what would be the best Adobe Premier preset to export it as, In order to achieve the best quality possible?

You're going to have to clarify this a bit more. Do you have ProRes files you want to edit with in Premiere? If so, you don't need to convert them--as long as you have QT installed, you can edit them, even on a PC.
Or are you saying that you've already edited, and now you want to do a final export for viewing, or for editing elsewhere?

  • Export to quicktime audio out of sync Apple Pro Res 422

    hello forum!
In a tizz as have an film due tomorrow but when I export to quicktime from final cut 7, the audio is out of sync...
I've scoured the forums and lots of other people seem to have this problem when using H264, however I converted to Apple Pro Res 422 (LT) before pulling files into final cut, plus all of the sequence and final cut settings (as far as I can tell) are already set to Apple Pro Res 422 (LT). I don't understand what I am doing wrong!
nb. the files seem to play okay in VLC

Thanks for your reply David! Indeed my audio is 16 bit 48 kHz and there is no MP3 audio (have a wav music file included).
I just spoke to a techy  friend who said the fact it is playing smoothly in VLC indicates the problem is with quicktime and not with the film itself, so I am currently compressing to something smaller and will see how I fare from there!

While a base level ProRes 422 codec is now comes installed with the Mavericks OS, the rest of the ProRes family (as well as the rest of the "pro" codecs) requires the installation of "pro" editing software like FCP Suite, FCP X, Motion, etc. (I.e., you will have to installed such software on your new iMac since it is not part of the base Mac OS X system installation.) In addition, if you wan to access legacy codecs like Animation, PNG, etc., then you will have to turn them back on manually since they are, by default, turned off on Lion and later operating systems.

  • Will FCE 3.5 work with Apple pro-res source Quicktimes?

A buddy is supplying some footage he shot. He's importing into FCPro and outputting Apple pro-res quicktimes which he's then dumping to a drive for me. I'm curious if I'll be able to work with them in FCE3.5.

No, you won't. The ProRes component only comes with Final Cut Studio and Logic. Have the friend import using an Apple Intermediate Codec setting instead of ProRes, because FCE will work with that.

  • Exporting FCE project to Apple Pro Res 422 HQ Quicktime conversion file

    Hi Folks,
I have recently tried exporting an FCE project (HD 1080 16:9) as:
    1. Quicktime file
    2. Quicktime conversion using Apple Pro Res 422 HQ
and noticed that the Pro Res file is 2Gb. larger than the standard Quicktime file.
Does this mean the quality is 2Gb better? (it certainly looks crisp and clear)
Should I be doing this everytime I export from now on?
    Any information much appreciated.  Regards.

Transcoding your material from one codec to a higher quality codec will not improve the quality of your source material. You are always limited by the quality of the image prior to the transcode.
If you have a pair of shoes you want to store, you can put them is a shoe box, or you can put them in a shipping crate - but neither method will improve the shoes.
The shipping crate will just take up more space.
The only possible advantage of transcoding your AIC sequence from FCE to ProRes would be:
    1) you force the need to repeatedly decompress and recompress the file  - ProRes will bear this better than AIC
    or
    2) you plan to use the file in an edit system that supports working directly in Pro Res.

  • New problems importing Pro-res files

    Hi,
I am running CC14 on PC (HPz800 Windows 8) - and I have recently become unable to import Pro-res files into After Effects or Media Encoder. These files DO open in premiere
    I have tried the following:
    Restarted
    Cleared my cache
    Cleared all my appdata settings
    uninstalled and reinstalled latest Quicktime
reverted back to a previous version of After effects (this is where i noticed the problem first and I had recently got a new update)
copying the file to a different location on my drive and importing it from there
    Additionally:
I have had no problems with Pro-res in the past
The same file works fine on other computers in my office with the same versions of Ae/Encoder
The video file works in premiere
The video file plays fine in Quicktime
    I get the following errors:
In Ae - "this '.mov' is damaged or unsupported"
In media encoder - "could not be imported. could not read from source. please check settings and try again"
In the meantime I have re-encoded a proxy using premiere - however this is not an adequate long-term solution
Not sure what to try next, don't really want to re-image my whole computer (i already did this on a month or so ago)
    Any help is appreciated

  • *** Weird flickering in Pro-res sequence

I'm working in the latest version of FCP with a Pro-res 422 30p sequence. I'm working with 1080/30p footage from the Sony EX1 and the Canon 5D. I'm also working with high-resolution photographs.
When I look at the sequence in FCP it all looks great but when I export it as a full-quality Quicktime Movie I consistently get this weird flicker or pulsate just before a cut from video footage to a still image. It's as-if the someone snaps their finger and the same pic all of a sudden get either slightly darker or lighter for 2 or 3 frames.
I'm not sure why this is happening but I really need to figure it out. Should I convert the sequence to another preset? Maybe h.264 or XDCAM EX 1080/30p?
    Thanks in advance!

What's the delivery to be? DVD? or?

  • Pro Res in Final cut express How do i get a good quality SD DVD

I recently bought final cut express and have suffered getting a good quality SD DVD out through the workflow from my cannon XHA1.
On screen its fine but when i author through imovie to DVD the quality is poor.
So reading the various threads it would seem that i need to use Pro res and the ingress codec... But cant find this option in express ?
Question is. Is pro res codec available in express and if not can someone suggest the optimum set up for HD capture to SD DVD output
    Many thanks

Use either of these techniques to get good quality DVDs from AIC.
    1. Edit your HDV/AIC in the timeline. Then create a new DV-PAL (NTSC) Anamorphic sequence. Copy your edited HDV/AIC to the new sequence. Do not alter anything. Render the sequence ..... this will take a long time - up to twice the length of the project. Then File>Export>QuickTime Movie (Not Self-contained).
However, if you use the QT Movie in iDVD you will get a squashed 4:3 movie, so first of all you must make QT stretch it out to its proper 16:9 dimensions like this:-
+a. Open the exported movie file in the QT Pro player.+
    +b. Go to Window>Show Movie Properties.+
+c. Select the "Video Track" and in the "Visual Settings" panel uncheck "Preserve Aspect Ratio".+
+d. In the "Scaled Size" box set the width to 1024 pixels for PAL.+
+e. The "Video Track" will have turned grey, so click it to make it blue again.+
+f. The opened movie file will jump to 16:9.+
+g. Close it with the red button and click Save.+
    2. This method is fast. Set your camera to "Locked DV" which means that FCE/FCP will capture it as anamorphic DV and edit it as standard definition anamorphic DV. (Use Easy Setup ... DV-PAL (NTSC) Anamorphic).
You can then Export>QuickTime Movie to be used in iDVD and use the stretching technique mentioned above.

  • Vixia HF200-apple pro res?

I've searched online and throughout the apple forum, but I can't find any info that discusses the best sequence and project settings to use with a Canon Vixia HF200 camera. I bought ten of the Vixia HF200's for our school to use with Final Cut Pro 6.06 running on Quad Core and a few 8 core Intel Macs. We can ingest perfectly. No issue. And I am probably using the wrong settings, but I set the sequence preset to Apple Pro Res HQ 1920x1080 24p. Our cameras are all set to cinema mode24p. For easy setup we have been using Format:HD, Rate:all and Use at DVCPro HD-1080pA24. Our sequence settings are 1920x1080 Custom 16:9, Pixel Aspect=1440x1080, timebase=23.98 and compressor apple Pro res HQ. I've played with other settings and editing is fine and the video looks fine. However, on most of these settings we are seeing some weird by product. All exported 1920x1080 video has flash frames throughout the video. You can watch the video on an NTSC monitor or on the computer monitor and there are no flash frames. But once you export using Quicktime Movie Apple Pro Res HQ 1920x1080, then that exported file shows multiple flash frames. Again, I'm sure I have all the wrong settings. Can someone respond with the optimal settings for editing AVCHD @ 24MB from a Canon Vixia HF200 within FCP 6.06?

    Did it work before?
If so, what did you change?
If not, have you tried installing the latest ProRes Codecs?

  • Audio and Video out of Sync after Pro Res export

I´m getting an audio/video sync issue when I´m exporting to Pro Res.
I started off in a HDV1080i50 sequence. Audio sampling rate is 48khz. (16 bit depth)
The sequence is less than 20 minutes long. It plays correctly on the timeline.
When I export the sequence for DVD and view it on a set top it plays absolutely fine.
When I export the video to ProRes (422 HQ - I used Export using Quicktime Conversion) and the audio to AIFF, they quickly go out of sync. This was brought to my attention first by the guys who were making the DigiBeta master, and when I view the exported material in a Pro Res sequence I can see it for myself.
The audio and video clips are of the exact same duration.
    Possible issues...
Some of the narration was recorded at 44.1 khz. I didn´t resample it (I´m still a learning novice..).. but if that is the issue should it not have affected the DVD as well? All the other audio in the project is 48khz.
Most of the material is HDV1080i50..but one clip used was originally an NTSC clip and therefore a different frame rate. However I converted it to a 25fps clip and this is reflected in the vid rate column in the browser where it says 25fps.
Final point, the exported AIFF files..when I import them back into the HDV1080i50 sequence and play back, it is perfectly in sync.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

First, yes resample the narration to 48k 16 bit.  You will probably be able to reconnect to the resampled files.  Usually works for me.   That's a simple fix and will probably solve the problem.  If it doesn't, you can try to change the codec (compressor) in the sequence settings to prores 422HQ, fully render and see if that solves the problem.
Wait, just reread your original post.  Export from fcp using file:  export:  quicktime movie NOT quicktime conversion with current settings.  If that works without synch issues, use compressor to convert to prores.

  • Apple pro res 422 file consuming more space than usual

    hi everyone!
I've been  working with FCP 7 since 2008 and at the same time I started working with Canon T2 from 2 years ago and I haven't had any problems with my FCP workflow files, editing and output used to be H. 264 based files until I started to  have problems with my hd DSRL projects. Recently when editing the audio went out of sync and  I was suggested to change the Quicktime video settings from FCP 7 to imovie (which is th application I commonly use to create chapters and share to iDVD) this worked perfectly. It was the  first time I which I had  to  change the Quictime Settings to Apple Pro Res 422 The Out of sync problem was resolved but the space consumed by the file was enourmosly ncreased instead. ie. A 5 min project usually would take like a 500 mbs quicktime  file  and now using the Apple Pro Res 422 this 5 min project went up to 5.3 Ggs!! And also the exporting process is taking forever!! For instance I'm working  with a 30 min project and the Quicktime conversion never ends. It's taking about 12 hrs and is not taking  more than the 20% of the process. Is there something I'm doing wrong? I need help in a extremely urgent way!  Thank you all guys! And best regards from Mexico!!
    Mac Pro early 2008
Processor  2.8 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon
    Memory  10 GB 800 MHz DDR2 FB-DIMM
Graphics  ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT 256 MB
    Software  OS X 10.8.4 (12E55)

    >using the Apple Pro Res 422 this 5 min project went up to 5.3 Ggs
That's about right for a ProRes 422 file. High quality video takes a lot of space. It's sufficient to use the lighter ProRes LT for the footage from your T2 by the way. Your MacPro can also have up to 4 hard drives for plenty of storage.
Why are you using QuickTime Conversion?
Exporting to QuickTime with current settings and self contained is the better way. Then you use Compressor to make your delivery format from that master. Compressor is faster because it can take advantage of multiple cores - FCP doesn't. It will also give you far more control and choice over the encoding.

  • Converting 7D camera footage to Apple Pro Res 422 HQ

I shot footage with the Canon 7D. I brought the footage to Compressor (latest version as part of Final Cut Studio). I am transcoding the footage to Apple Pro Res 422 HQ for editing in Final Cut Pro 7.
A few clips have been transcoded. I open up the original file and the Pro Res HQ file and compare them side by side on my Mac Book Pro. I would like to attach the screenshot but don't think I can do it that here. Anyway, the Pro Res clip is slightly smaller when opened with Quicktime 7 and 10. Also, the colors seem to be darker and the clip a lot muddier than before.
Has anyone had any experience with this? Thanks.

My clips do experience a slight color shift but nothing nominal. However, I have no problems converting my files using the preset and opening them up in FCP 7. When I open them in QTX they appear the same size as their original. Have you checked the inspector pane on your MBP? I have had issues where QTX will not open a video full size due to screen resolution limitations and would always downsize instead. That could be your issue since the MBP cannot display a 1080p file at full resolution.

  • Capture Apple pro Res settings

Hi how do I change the settings in Final cut pro so that i captures full HD  1920x1080 Linear PCMApple Pro Res 422 HQ quicktime?

    So it's probably HDV.
First thing I'd check is the camera settings to make sure they're correct.
And what version FCP are you using?
