Quicktime x will not open

I think I have a file association issue. I have a piece of paper and pencil for a quicktime x icon and quicktime will not open. I have tried to look for ways to uninstall and reinstall quicktime x but I am new to the Macbook Pro so I'm not familiar on how to navigate through the more advanced settings. I have looked through forums and could not find what I was looking for. It will not let me click on a file and "open with" quicktime. I click on quicktime in the applications folder and it opens for a second on the dock and then closes out. Please help me out. I have been using DivX instead of quicktime but I like the format of quicktime better.
Thanks, Pam

Another thing i have found in regards to this issue and quicktime is.
When you join two clips that have both been encoded with handbrake at apple tv setting. So they both have aac as first track and ac3 as second. When they are joined together and then saved as a .mov file (so without exporting). The resulting file will play fine in itunes and quicktime, but on the apple tv, at the point where the second clip has been joined on, apple tv looses the audio.
The audio is playing as ac3 on the first clip.
Also to note when played in itunes, with joined clips you dont have the option to select between ac3 and just aac. But when playing the clip on appletv my av unit definitely shows the first clip as playing in ac3.
Any ideas as to what the story is?
What is quicktime doing when it joins the two clips?

Hmmm. There's a couple of things that might be going on with that one.
Let's try an uninstall and reinstall of QuickTime first.
If you're using XP, head into your Add or Remove Programs control panel. Select "QuickTime", click "Change" and then click "Remove".
If you're using & or Vista, head into your Uninstall a program control panel, select QuickTime, and then click "Uninstall".
You can get QuickTime back either via Apple Software Update (in your Start menu go "All Programs > Apple Software Update" ... QuickTime should appear in the "New Programs" section), or by downloading a QuickTimeInstaller.exe from the following location:

  • Quicktime Pro will not open

I recently purchased Quicktime Pro v.7 for the PC. After installation I was able to access the program ONCE. Now when I attempt to open the program, it appears to be opening then drops to the bar a the bottom of the screen (minimized). It will not expand / restore, so it's really quite useless. I re-installed it several times, even got a clear download and removed the old file. It simply will not work. I spent what seems like a lifetime looking for help on this site, or (imagine this concept) some sort of actual interactive support option here at Apple.com.
If anyone can help or knows the secret handshake to actually talk to someone at Apple, please share.

Resolved! I used some of the KB info on the Apple site and gleaned that the problem may be with the user identity. Don't know why, and don't really care at this point. What I did was create a new user on my computer, then using that identity, opened QT Pro. It worked! Then, I switched back to the other ID and QT Pro opened for that user as well. (Note the word 'switched' may be related to the message 'switching' on the QT Pro opening window.)
I hope this works for you too. After I got the app to open for my original identity, I was able to delete the new one and it continues to work fine.
And finally, yes, I was able to get the app to open by opening a .mov file. Good luck!

  • Quicktime app will not open??

My Quicktime stopped functioning. If I try to open it, or a movie, it opens momentarily and then crash dives and disappears. It was working fine yesterday. I've downloaded and re-installed it. (I had the Pro version, but didn't attempt to add my registration number ... as the standard version isn't opening.)
The only thing I've done since yesterday: I re-installed Spectrasonics RMX ... going through the installation of about five updates. Haven't ever heard of any conflict between Spectrasonics and Apple Quicktime.
I've trashed my Quicktime 'preferences'. I've repaired my 'permissions'. I'm at a loss.
    All ears,
    Ben

I checked all suggestions. I uninstalled an M-audio FastTrackPro driver that one article suggested might be a problem.
All my earlier movies will open, if I double click them ... they open in Quicktime, play fine. I can't open Quicktime by itself, it just fails. If I try to open the Spectrasonic Tutorial movies (QT's) the Player also fails. I can open these with MPEG Streamclip just fine.
The problem started when I downloaded the Spectrasonics Tutorials, which never did open properly in Quicktime. And Quicktime itself won't open by itself. But functions fine when opened with other movies.
    At a loss...

  • Quicktime 10 will not open DVPAL AVI files even with QT7 Player!

I own a 2011 Mac Mini with OSX 10.6.7 on it. I have 2 Video files that are DVPAL encoded AVIs. THey are purely video, no embedded audio at all. Upon attempting to load them into Quicktime 10 - they would not import - I get the error message:
could not be opened. The movie is not in a format that QuickTime Player understands.
I click the more info, and since then I have downloaded and installed Perian versian 1.22 - xvid, divx, all the components I can find. One at a time, all at once, various ways, repaired disk permissions on all occasions and still it refused to open.
I then installed QT7 from the OSX disk. But this also refused to open the files. Interestingly enough, VLC media will play them, but Mpeg Stream Clip does not!
I've tried everything that ive read on the web, does anyone else have any ideas on how to get round this? I need it to work somehow, as I work with Pro Tools 9 and that needs quicktime to open and import video files!

I agree with your advice to wait for another update.
I see you also have cinepak issues (another string)
    An important aside:
buried in the installer legalese (that we all tend to blow through) is a note that the MPEG2 plugin has been updated for 7.6. You get the updated plugin by going to the Apple Store, signing in, go to your account-- software purchases. There you will find the matching MPEG2 updater.

  • QuickTime Pro will not open .wma (Error #2048)

I have a few .wma movie files that I have created in (the horrible) "Windows Live Movie maker".
I wanted to be able to play these files on my iTunes, so I foolishly purchased QuickTime Pro after reading the description. "QuickTime 7 Pro can convert your media to different formats, so you can watch a movie or video on your iPhone, iPod, and Apple TV..". But it refuses to open any .wma files so that I can convert them. I keep getting the error message #2048. I read somewhere that installing new codecs might help...? If so, please treat me like 5 year old and explain to me where to start with that. Or should I just give up on it altogether?
It is really frustrating... I've ripped my hair so much I have bald spots and they are growing by the minute
Any solutions for this problem will be very much appriciated! Thanks!

I was afraid of that.. :-(
Yeah... well, I've tried to import the files to iTunes, both through drag'n drop and by Files/Add to Library but nothing, zip, zero happens. Not even an error message appears. I have no problem with adding mpeg4 files but I get no reaction when trying to add the wma's...

  • QuickTime Player will not open (Illegal instruction: 4)

Hi - Whenever I try to open QuickTime Player, nothing happens. No dock icon bouncing, nothing.
This happens when I open a file with QuickTime Player, or open it directly.
I tried to open it with the Terminal, and the message I recieved was:
    "Illegal instruction:4"
I saw a question which had a similar problem but with lots of default apps, after an upgrade to Lion, or Mountain Lion. They fixed the problem by repairing disk permissions via Disk Utility. I've done that, and it hasn't helped.
When I tried sudoing it, I got no error message, but it still didn't open.
I'm running OSX 10.8.1, QuickTime seems to be v10.2 (?), this might have happened since upgrading to Mountain Lion, but I'm not sure.
Any help would be much appreciated.
    Thanks!

Well, I've had this problem for ages, but it's suddenly started working. Perhaps it was a recent software update.
    I haven't done anything else.
Sorry if I couldn't help anyone else with this problem (but it doesn't look like there is anyone)

  • Itunes will not open after upgrade

After upgrading to the latest version of itunes and quicktime it will not open (no error message given). If i log off as administrator and log on as another user it will open. is there a fix for this?

there's a few different things that can cause that on a PC.
perhaps try working through the user-account-specific section of the following document first:

  • Itunes will not open and quicktime will not update

selecting iTunes results in popup message; 'iTunes requires Quicktime 7.5.5 or later...', but QuickTime will not open.
    Control right-click did not help.

Wow, it looks like your software is very very old.
The current version of QuickTime is 10.3.  The current version of OS X is 10.9.1.  (Your profile indicates you are running OS X 10.5.8, Leopard.  Leopard was released in 2007.)
The current version of iTunes, 11.1.4, will not run on Leopard.
Anyway, it sounds as if all your software needs extensive upgrading.  You may be using a computer that is too old to run current software.

  • ITunes/Quicktime will not open

So iTunes 7.02 and whatever the latest quicktime is will not launch at all. If I launch them they'll show up in task manager, but will never open. Ending task does nothing but cause my comp to go completely unstable (won't shut down/reboot except with a hard shutdown, can't go to add/remove programs, explorer is f'd up and won't close and reopen itself, etc). Also, trying to launch either of them prevents me from opening new programs or shutting down.
I've scoured the web and itunes support and haven't found a solution that works for me.
    So far I've...
1)uninstalled itunes/quicktime, deleted all files (except for itunes preferences/playlists), rebooted and reinstalled.
2)uninstalled itunes/quicktime, reboot, installed quicktime 6.4, reboot, unistalled quicktime, reboot, reinstalled itunes/quicktime 7+
3)uninstalled itunes/quicktime, delete all itunes/quicktime files, reboot, installed quicktime standalone, installed itunes.
4)uninstalled apple software updater, and redid #3.
    5) uninstalled quicktime and itunes, rebooted, removed itunes preference files from both application data folders, reinstalled.
And tried some of the above a few more times.
There were no hardware/software changes, this just started happening two days ago. Plugging in my shuffle will charge it but iTunes won't launch (except in task manager).
I don't have Norton/McAffee (that was creating a problem for some people). I'm using windows firewall and it is already an exception. Current anti-virus is AVG 7.5, I have all the security updates including SP2.

excellent news. glad you're up and running again.
here's what was probably going on. since itunes and quicktime (and ituneshelper) are internet applications, your Firewall will be keeping an eye on modifications to those programs. typically a new set of rules is generated for the new versions of the applications. so it's possible for the Firewall to allow the earlier version of the application, but balk at the newer one (because there's different sets of rules for each one).
so if you run into this sort of thing again after an upgrade, try checking through the exceptions that you firewall has set up for those new versions of the applications.

  • Encore Will not open with Quicktime 7.75.80.95 update

Encore will not open after I installed Quicktime v. 7.75.80.95. After I uninstall QuickTime Encore works, but other programs still need Qt to be able to run properly. What gives?
    Specs:
    Windows 7 64 Sp1
    Adobe CC
    Encore CS6

I don't recall seeing any other report of this. The usual solution for QT update issues is to roll back.

  • Quicktime and itunes will not open - buffer overrun in quicktime

I cannot open Itunes. It says it needs quicktime. quicktime will not open. says buffer overrun. reinstalled both itunes and quicktime. both used to run prior to updates. Help.

Quicktime was working on my Vista computer up until a short time ago. I believe one of the Microsoft updates crippled it. I have looked at several forums and read the other threads on this site and from what others have described I really believe now that Microsoft did this with one of their updates. There are many problems with Vista all due to Microsoft trying to force developers to use only their products. Unfortunately they are squeezing us customers really hard.

  • Quicktime and itunes will not open error message

I think their is suppose to be two files (QuickTime.qts and QuickTimeVR.qtx) in the systems 32 folder. But there is a quick.ime also in the folder, do I delete it so that my quicktime and itunes work.

No, quick.ime is not part of Quicktime. Don't delete it.
If Quicktime will not open, then iTunes can't work.
Can you give the Quicktime error message in full, and also check in your Windows error logs or Problems & solutions to see if there is more information there.
You haven't given your Windows version which helps when troubleshooting.
