QuicktimeKirk H.264 codec help

Dear QuicktimeKirk,
what settings do you use to clear up your video(quicktime movie)exports using the H.264 codec to clear video?(Iam a old fan of quicktime but Iam new to the codec.)Iam still getting the small pixels and fuzziness on my movie.
Would you recommend your settings on every movie?

I export from the best source available. I use the original source exported directly to .mov or .mp4 using the H.264 video codec.
If the file has already been processed to something (.mov, .mp4 or any MPEG flavor) I first export the file back to DV Stream and use this new file for the H.264 export.
It will not be as good as using the original source but, it will be much better than if you compressed (using H.264) an already compressed file.
H.264 isn't a magic bullet. It can't repair a poorly compressed file and it will not dramatically improve an already compressed file.
I think the Windows Movie Maker software allows you to export to some sort of DV (Digital Video) format. This will not add any new data to an already compressed file but it will not further compress the file either.
Don't try to increase the dimensions of the file. If it was 320X240 when first made (or compressed) leave it at that size when you apply the H.264 codec.
I hope this helps answer your questions.

  • Apple device h.264 codecs failed

For the last two days I've been using the Apple Device h.264 codec to compress 1-3 minute clips to prepare for apps. Everything worked smoothly. Now all of the sudden none of those three listed codecs work. Other codecs in Compressor do, but not the ones under the Apple Device category. I've been exporting out of FCP, so instead I tried to import into a QT movie into Compressor and try it that way, but that didn't work. I tried to repair Compressor with this:
    http://www.digitalrebellion.com/compressorrepair/
That didn't work. I tried to repair permissions on my computer through my Disk Utility, and that didn't work. Do you know what else I can do?
    Thanks,
    miss2z
P.S. I'm posting this now, but I have to leave the computer for a time. My reply could be slow at first.

If you can export H264 files out of FC or by opening a file in QT and then exporting a H264 then the system does have the codec and Compressor has the issue.
I would try uninstalling all of FCS since you have already re-installed Compressor and Qmaster.
I presume you uninstalled with Digital Rebellion's uninstaller software as opposed to just reinstalling from the discs or dragging the app to the trash and reinstalling? I would not recommend the later two.
When I uninstalled with DR's uninstaller and reinstalled I still had to insert every disc and it took quite a bit of time. I would consider uninstalling everything and then reinstall.
Digital Rebellion also has a preference manager for FCS and this will save any preferences you desire in FCS. I would use this before the uninstall and not save anything related to Compressor.
Absolute worst case scenario: Clean install
This means you take your system disc and erase the hard drive and start over from scratch. Cloning your system drive and time machine can help avoid some of this but some people feel that time machine isn't the best option for backing up things like FCS. It is a huge hassle and very time consuming but every time I have done a clean install and reinstalled everything it has ALWAYS worked.

  • How to use the settings of Apple's h.264 Codec in ffmpeg.

    Hi there!
Is it possible to use the same settings of the Apple h.264 codec in ffmpeg?
I already found a *.setting file with some info, but this can't be all....
Does someone know the settings of the Apple h.264 codec that are used by default (e.g.: me, subme, psy, mixed_ref, bframes, b_pyramid)? Or maybe there's a tool to analyze a movie encoded with the Apple h.264 codec very precisely (I already tried h264_parse.exe, but I couldn't figure out that much)

    My questions are:
    1) How do I access the values generated by APEX (in bold) so that I can use them in further calculations? e.g. create a grand total from both regions
    2) Having calculated a value, assuming 1 above is possible, how do I insert it at position x or y? e.g I want to calculate a % so that x would be 8.33% and y 20%
There are a couple of options for doing this, but neither of them are particularly simple for the inexperienced.
    1. Use dynamic actions and JavaScript to extract the values from the report total rows, calculate the values, and insert the results into the required report cell.
    2. Combine both reports into one, with all of the calculations performed in the query, and use a custom report template to display the results in the required format. This would involve a similar approach to that used in this previous thread: https://forums.oracle.com/message/10109743#10109743
    3) How do I change the words report total: to something more helpful?
Use the Display this text when printing report sums property in the Break Formatting section of the report attributes.

  • After Effects render constraints for .mov with h.264 codec maximum dimensions 2000px x 2000px?

Is there anyway I can create  .mov container with h.264 codec with dimensions 3840px by 1080px? When I try rendering from AE it lowers dimensions to under 2000px. Same thing happens when I try to save as from Quicktime. Programs I have access to are Premiere Pro, After Effects, Adobe Media Encoder, and Final Cut.
    Thank you for your help.

Yes, It does seem to be mutliple LDCs. They asked for a final output video as 3840x1080. The  requirements are this and they finally sent this display.
    Basic Requirements
Ensure the resolution of the file (width and height in pixels) matches the specs provided exactly, even small deviations can result in poor quality playback or no playback at all
.MOV animations must use H.264 encoding
We recommend 15fps (frames per second) for animation
File size should be roughly 1 Megabyte per second or less, i.e. a 10 second .MOV file should be 10MB or less.
Thank you for your help, I will ask on the other forum.

  • Transferring .mov files with H.264 codec to FCP

I am looking to purchase one of the Canon SLR cameras that offer video
    ( 5D mark 2 / 7D , etc ) and I understand that the .mov files they generate
( using the H 264 codec ) are not happily worked with in FCP.
Can anyone describe or go into what is then entailed in saving them in
a different format - one that is easily worked with in FCP ?
Is that a simple / quick step, or is it time intensive, etc. ?
Would really like to form a better understanding before purchase. I want the
camera primarily for its still image capability - so choosing another video
format ( better for file coding, etc. ) isn't so much an option.
Nonetheless, I would want to make use of the video features and am just
wondering whether it is a bit of an inconvenience, or a big fat pain in
    the @$$.
    Thanks for any help,

I've made a droplet that converts files from 30 fps to 29.97 and into ProRes 422.
    http://www.wallyandnay.net/Droplets/30-%3E29.97ProRes422.zip
I take my files, drop them on the droplet, go watch TV while they convert, then edit in FCP. Is it quick? No, but you can have only two of the following things
No transcoding, amazing quality, cheap price.
    Put up with the transcoding.

  • QT7: movie export using h.264 codec results in darker colors/loss of white

Movie export using QT inbuilt H.264 (Sorensen and Mpeg4, too) codec results in a shift of white to soft grey (about 5 .. 10% of black). This also pertains all colors used. It looks like a certain amount of grey is added to all colors, that darkens whole movie.
I don't have a clue where this comes from. It can be reproduced, even when using a 2 seconds single picture slideshow. Think it's Apple's turn now ...
Found a work around for *.mov video files containing a single video track.
    Use QT for this:
    - Open video file which has to be compressed. In Properties window, select the video track and click Visual Settings and flip video horizontally. Save by name.
    - Open flipped video and compress using H.264 codec
    - Open compressed video, use Properties window, select the video track, click Visual Settings and flip video horizontally again. Save by name.
That's it. White is back again, colors differ slightly, but that's ok.

  • How to add the H.264 codec to my render format list?

Hi guys. Kinda new to the forums so sorry if this should go elsewhere but...
I'm having troubles with trying to add the H.264 codec to my rendering format options list (alongside quicktime, FLV, etc.)
My computer lingo isn't quite up to scratch (or computer (e-)vocab). If you could help me out (by providing a link or whatnot and explaining what to do) you have no idea how much it would help. I really need to render this project as a H.264 file.
    Thanks so much in advance!

Please show a screenshot of exactly where you're looking for H.264 and not finding it.
You choose the format in the Output Module Settings dialog box. H.264 should be there.
What version of After Effects are you using?

  • Compression factor of the H.264 codec

I'm looking for a fact that I do not find, if anyone can help me it's greatly appreciated.
What is the compression factor of the H.264 codec?
For example if I have the following characteristics.
    352x240
    Camara color (24 bit)
    15fps
    The speed of transmission would be (vtx) = (352x240x24x15) / 1024 = 29700Kbps
"After the compesion that would have value?
    Thanks

You as an end user determine what the compression factor or bitrate will be. You can set the bitrate at whatever number you like, and h.264 (or VP6) will crunch the video to meet that specification. Ultimately, you'll have to decide what the "correct" bitrate for your application. If you need high quality video at a high resolution and have adequate processing hardware and bandwidth, you can set the bitrate high. If you need video that captures low motion, talking head type images and you have low end hardware, you can get away with setting a lower bitrate. It just takes alot of playing around with all the configuration settings to get it right.

  • Creating Blue-ray disc - H.264 Codec?

Hi, I know I can use MPEG-2 for Blue-Ray. Is it possible to use H.264 Codec for Blue-Ray in Compressor? (it should be much more efficient then the MPEG)... How can I make it work?

    How long is your video?
I have made Blu-Ray discs using Compressor and the latest Toast Titanium on standard DVD discs.
In compressor just encode your video using the HD DVD codec supplied.
Then, using toast select Blu-Ray disc (if you have a Blu-Ray burner) or select Blu-Ray on DVD (this will create a bluray disc on a standard DVDR although you will be limited to around 30mins)
I have done this succesfully a few times and played back using PS3 with no problems.

If it intially export to uncompressed AVI, then using Quicktime Pro to encode via the codec, it will work unless the file sizes are large. Any sugeestions?

  • Rendering to Quicktime h.264 codec Error

Hey, i keep getting this error when i try to render to Quicktime with the h.264 codec from After Effects CS3. I installed the 8.0.2 update but that didn't work.
The error reads: After Effects error: compressing frame of movie - Quicktime codec error(-8960) (44::39)
It comes up usually at the first few frames. It's not just this particular comp. It doesn't work with any.
    Thanks for your consideration.

It tells you that the CoDec is not compatible with Quicktime. What operating system are you on? What version of QT do you use? Does exporting H.264 work from QT Pro or other apps?

  • H.264 codec no play android or kindle?

My mp4 video with h.264 codec using adobe media encoder cs5 doesn't play on my android htc phone and also on the kindle fire. Using this same video file, what codec and format should I use within AME cs5?
    Thanks

The presets Todd links to will work in AME CS6, but not in CS5.
Use the specifications listed in the Video Encoding Recommendations section at the bottom of this page. These are the same specifications we used to build the Android presets for AME CS6.

  • .mp4 using  H.264 codec

    Hi,
I want to create .mp4 files using H.264 codec... It seems Compressor doesn't have that feature while Quicktime does (I can export to .mp4 and then choose H.264 as the codec).
Does anyone knows how to do it on Compressor?
    Thanks

    1. Export as H.264 .mov using Compressor
    2. Open the file in QuickTime Player
    3. Export to MPEG-4 (.mp4) as H.264, and choose pass-through for both video and audio
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/QuickTime#Container_benefits
In QuickTime Pro's MPEG-4 Export dialog, an option called "Passthrough" allows a clean export to MP4 without affecting the audio or video streams. One recent discrepancy ushered in by QuickTime 7 is that the MOV file format now supports multichannel audio (used, for example, in the high-definition trailers on Apple's site]), while QuickTime's support for audio in the MP4 container is limited to stereo. Therefore multichannel audio must be re-encoded during MP4 export.
It sure is a bit strange that Compressor does not support exporting H.264 using an .mp4 container. I would recommend sending Apple some feedback about this: http://www.apple.com/feedback/compressor.html

  • I burned an edited movie to disc using H.264 codec and a second movie to MPEG -4 Video both worked well on my iMac but will not play on my Sony DVD Recorder/Player which accepts both DVD RW and DVD-RW.  Any suggestions?

I burned an edited movie to disc using H.264 codec and a second movie using MPEG-4 Video.  Both played well on my iMac but would not play on my Sony DVD Recorder/Player which accepts both DVD+RW and DVD-RW discs.  I have tried other 'codecs' DV-PAL; DVCPRO-PAL; DVCPRO50-PAL; AIC; and finally share to iDVD.  iDVD works on both my iMac and DVD Recorder but the picture is very poor with major shimmering which is unwatchable.  Can anyone assist? The other codecs I used either do not pay on my video recorder or fail when I play them back on my iMac.  I am at a loss as to what I can do.  I am from the UK so using PAL is essential.

If the source video is interlaced, you may have problems using iMovie. It de-interlaces everything on output which can cause picture to look strange.  Final Cut Pro X supports interlaced video, but it costs a lot more.
Standard DVD Players don't support H.264 or MPEG4.  You might want to look at this article on transferring HD video to DVD.  I wrote this article mainly for Final Cut Pro, but many of the same principles apply.
