Quictime crashes ie7 and also when attempt to check for software updates XP

I have recently changed my pc and am attempting to install quicktime on the new computer. It is a windows XP computer.
Quicktime 7.2 is installed, but when I attempt to open a web page with a quictime movie, internet explorer crashes with the following information
Appname: iexplore.exe
AppVer: 7.0.6000.16473
ModName: quicktimeh264.qtx
ModVer: 7.2.0.240
Offset 00054c8a
In addtion, if I open up quictime and then go to help and update existing software, I get a different error message.
microsoft visual C++ Runtime Library
buffer overrun detected!
Program: c:/program files/quicktime/quicktimeplayer.exe
A buffer overrun has been detected which has corrupted the programs internal state. The program cannot safely continue execution and must now be terminated.
Does anyonehave any edieas wwhat might be going on.
I have uninstalled and reinstalled quiktime, but this has not made a difference.

Still struggling with this.
I have tried uninstalling quicktime and itunes, and then deleting the quicktime folder from programme files, then reinstalling all the software.
I have also found that when I attempt to export a quicktime movie I get the same error.
This all seems to be pointing to a corrupt installation of QT, but I don't understand why.
Any ideas?
