Quiet Line test with ADSL modem connected

Hi,
If I carry out the quiet line test from the test socket without the adsl modem connected then the line is quiet, when the ADSL modem comes on line, then a very distinct hiss is heard. It is loud enough to disrupt  normal phone conversations.
Different Modems, different Filters (including the one recently fitted in the master socket by openreach) make no difference.
The fault history on the line is that during wind & rain then the line is really noisy with pops & crackles . Then as the weather improves the pops & crackles drop, but the hiss will remain.
Needsless to say the ADSL modem drops out regularly during bad weather, and is now connecting way below its normal 10Mb rate.
A line engineer is booked to visit , so hence can I use the adsl modem hiss on the voice line as a diagnostic to help them discover the problem?
Thanks
Andy

Hi,
I run a mrtg server to log stats from the modem. current connection time is an hour or so. During the storms of the past few days, the connection can be up and down every few minutes . During these periods, the crackle and pop on the line is deafening.
I am double filtered on the phone line (i.e. a filter connected to the faceplate).
At times, when the modem is stuggling to connect, extablishing a voice call can stabilise thngs. To my mind this all points to a high resistance connection. That somehow is causing the higher frequency adsl signal to be the source of lower frequency (& thus audible) hiss.
I guess it's going to depend on whether the Engineer is up for replacing overhead cables / joints . Given that one is under significant strain from large silver birch branch some 100m away from my property.
If someone could do a quick quiet line test, (with their adsl connection up) and report whether they hear a background hiss it would be most useful.
Thanks
Andy

  • Quiet line test has mains hum - how to fix

My BT incoming pair is located right below the electrical mains distribution board.
A Quiet line test has main hum which goes away when I trip the RCDs (there are two)
My speed has never been good (2.5Mb max - we are nearly in the next exchange area), but speed is now only 1.5 since we recently had to have an RCD replaced for safety reasons.
My immediate neighbour syncs at 2.4Mb using a different pair in the same drop wire.
I've been testing direct from the incoming pair - NO house wiring connected at all, so forget i-plate issues.
I conclude the mains hum is my primary problem.
What minimum separation distances and layouts are needed to eliminate mains interference?
I believe phone & power should cross at 90 deg and not run parallel - what are the rules?
Can I shield the existing phone wiring (with kitchen foil or something. I guess it will need earthing or something)?
The phone wiring disappears into structure at the edge of the cupboard (the same side as the incoming mains power!!) and can't be pulled thro or easily changed.
There is a little slack to mount the master socket etc a bit lower
Can one post a photo on this forum to show what I mean?
Any Help would be much appreciated

  • Bt quiet line test facility -no longer working

Has any one else had problems when trying to perform a quite line test ?
what happens in when i dial the 17070  is i still hear the recorded announcement message and the available options, i press the number 2 for quiet test and nothing happens
even if i un hide my CLI still nothing no selection of any options is available has this valuable service been withdrawn to the public now or is there some kind of fault with bt systems that is the cause ?

maybe wait until you get some more replies - I would be surprised if the quiet line test is exchange specific

  • HT1178 How setup and configure time capsule with ADSL modem for WiFi internet

For my first time time capsule 2TB set up,would like to know about configuration time capsule with ADSL modem for use WiFi internet!

You will want to turn off the WiFi on your modem (if there is WiFi on your modem). Connect the TC and the modem together with an Ethernet cable. Then, turn on your TC and set it up to be in bridged mode, connection type 'Ethernet'.

  • Problem w/ WRT54G connecting with ADSL modem...no Internet even when 'wired' connected

    Hi ladies/gents,
need help...not sure what to do...
i have ADSL modem, and i have a cable running from the modem to the "internet" port of my Linksys router.  i have another cable from Port 1 (or whichever) to my laptop.  modem works/is connected, router works/is connected, cables are good.
YET, i am getting NO internet...forget wireless here...i am just talking about the simple wired connection here and it is not giving me any Internet.  If i disconnect the modem cable from the Internet port and connect directly to laptop, then Internet works fine....frustrating.
i do know that the ISP says that they use Automatic DHCP (or something like that)
    Any ideas!?

This is not really a fix, however, what I found out from having the same problem (Limited or no connectivity) is for some reason my verizon modem (Westell 6100) and the router (Wrt54g) had the same IP address.  I changed the router IP address several time and it would alway end up with the same problem.
What I ended up doing (mind you its for no other reason than I wanted to connect to the internet and was sick of the problem) was connect my modem to the #1 port of the router and use the other three ports for my computers thinking that if they had the same IP address maybe it would work that way.  I know very little about how this stuff work but it did fix my problem.  I have been hooked up that way for months and haven't lost speed or connection since.  I hope this helps and maybe someday someone who know why it works will tell me so I will know.
    Good Luck !!

  • ADSL Modem connection in the UK + Airport Express

I've searched throughout these discussion boards, and have found a lot of people with questions about ADSL modems inconjunction with the Airport Express. And have come to be quite confused about the best solution.
My network plan at this stage is for:
(Internet) -> ADSL Modem ->Airport Express -> iMac & Mac Mini (both wireless).
Most UK ISPs obviously offer bundles that include USB ADSL Modems, quite often now they include wireless functionality as well.
What i want to know is, what ADSL Modem can i buy, that will work with standard uk isps (haven't decided on one yet), and allow me to have the Airport Express distribute IP addresses, and provide AirTunes access?
Essentially, i want to use the Airport Express as much as possible, and for the ADSL modem to do no routing if possible, and to just provide the access to the internet.
What is the most plain / cheap adsl modem i can get for this task?
Thankyou for listening! and for any help you can give me!

    Mischa,
    Welcome to discussions.
I can only endorse the other posts regarding the use of an Ethernet DSL modem, rather than a USB one. If you're thinking of a new ISP, you could always ask them for a free Ethernet / Wireless DSL modem, if they try to fob you off with a USB one, insist on Ethernet. Some ISPs do have them, especially if explain you're wanting to connect more than one "family computer" to the internet.
I have the Netgear DG834G mentioned earlier. It's top dog. I also have an AE. Not what you'd want to hear, I put the Netgear above the AE. The DG834G also has wireless, so it's useful for operating in addition to the AE, I use an Ethernet cable between them and have the AE extend my wireless network.
A top link for help choosing what you want is:
    http://www.broadbandbuyer.co.uk/
There's a network wizard on the left, answer the questions and it'll give you an idea of what is available and the UK prices. Or click on the type of modem you want to get there a lot quicker (ie. ADSL Modems and then ADSL Ethernet Modems). Buy from anywhere you like, this is just a guide.
I'm still a bit concerned that you want to leave the DHCP, NAT and firewall to the AE. Sure it's easy to do with Airport Admin Utility, but almost any ADSL Modem is configurable with a web browser. It's easy once you understand the concepts, which you will have to do to use it even with AE.

  • Configuring Airport express to connect with ADSL modem

    Background:
I'm in the UK and I'm using a different modem than the one supplied by my ISP because Airport requires a ethernet connection (as opposed to the USB connection on the modem supplied by my ISP.
My DSL modem has a solid green light for ADSL and Ehternet
My Airport express which was bought in the USA has a solid green light
    Issues:
I can't connect to the internet using airport express and need help with the configuration, using either the PPPoE or Ethernet settings.
I've entered in all the acccount details provided by my ISP but it seems that the airport 'cant find the PPPoE host.'
I've been pulling my hair out trying to get this to work. Any thoughts or suggestions appreciated.

  • Airport express not working with ADSL modem

I recently connected my Power notebook G4 to a ADSL D-Link modem and it worked fine. When I routed it through an Airport Extreme to be wireless, I failed to open safari or internet explorer. Though, on airport express it showed that the internet was connected through the ethernet.
    What do I do?

No, nothing else needs to be connected.
    Possible causes of your problem:
    - you need to manually register (with your ISP) the fact a new device is cabled to their network
    - your DSL connection requires the PPPoE protocol (ask them!) and your Airport Express is currently configured to connected using the default protocol DHCP.

  • What is the best ADSL modem to use with AEBS in the UK?

I'm currently using the Netgear DG834G with it's wireless functionality switched off, and my AEBS (gigabit) is set up as a bridge.
When I've tried to resolve various problems such as getting iChat AV working I've got the impression that I might have fewer problems if I let the AEBS do the routing, and simply had an ADSL modem connected to it (rather than a modem/router combo).
What do other people use in the UK, and what success do you have with Skype, iChat etc?
Is there a better way to configure my DG834G so it only acts as a modem? I don't have much technical knowledge in this area, though I have been through the Netgear control panel and sorted out fixed IP addresses.
In some respects, ie. internet browsing, streaming movie trailers on the Apple TV, OS X software updates, all perform perfectly. From that point of view, it seems that there cannot be too much wrong?
A couple of 'by the ways': I also have an Airport Express configured in bridge mode to use with my iPhone and 802.11g MacBook, so that I can keep the Airport Extreme (gigabit) set to work exclusively on 802.11n for maximum performance to the Apple TV. The Extreme and Express are using different frequencies.
I've just ordered the new Mac Pro, which has two Ethernet ports. Is there a way I can put these to good use, for example having a standard network separate from a gigabit network using jumbo frames? I'm sure this is too much to put in one thread, but in a way it's probably best to cover everything together!

I use the Linksys ADSL2MUE - which I managed to buy for £12.
I configured it in bridged mode - leaving the Apple Extreme do all the firewall and DHCP stuff.
It's not pretty but does the job.

  • Fed up with speed and connection issues since exch...

Last Monday BT done some upgrade work at our local exchange.  From that point onwards we have had speed and connection issues.
I use a Belkin G Router rather that the Homehub some that we can run a printer through it and that is plugged in to telephone socket via an extension.  But before we blame any of that we have gone back to the Homehub2 so we could see the difference and there is very little.
We live in the countrside so broadband speeds are not great in any case.  About 1.8 mg I guess but we have always had no problems.  It was good enough for us and we could watch Iplayer.
I was getting fed up with drop outs and speed and yestereday an Openreach guy came out tested everything could not find any problems apart from speed.  He made some calls and was told our band width had been capped.  He had that removed and yesterday evening speed was a bit better.
    Today just as bad again.

    Hi Welcome to the forums
Your high noise margin  will have a major impact  on your speed
If you post the full stats from your router
For homehub – type 192.168.1.254 into your browser
Navigate to ADSL Settings or use the A-Z at the top right of the home page and scroll down to ADSL Settings and click on it
Click on More Details and then post the full results.
also post the full results from http://speedtester.bt.com/
Have you tried connecting to the test socket at the rear of the master socket
Have you tried the quiet line test? - dial 17070 option 2 - should hear nothing - best done with a corded phone. if cordless phone you may hear a 'dull hum' which is normal
also you could try the hints given by poster RogerB in this link they may help http://community.bt.com/t5/BB-in-Home/Poor-Broadband-speed/m-p/14217#M8397

  • Mac Mini Won't Boot with VGA Monitor Connected

I have a new Mac Mini connected to an older VGA monitor using the Apple brand VGA adapter.  The mini is fully up to date and runs perfectly when booted.  However, if I reboot the mini with the VGA monitor connected, it fails to boot.  I just hear the faint chime sound every other second.  There is no output to the monitor and the only way I can get it to boot is to disconnect the monitor and then power cycle the mini.  I can reconnect the monitor just seconds after powering back on and it finishes booting properly.
Anyone else experience this?  It is very frustrating.  I've also tested with an HDMI connected monitor (without the VGA adapter) and it boots just fine and the display works properly.
    Thanks!

Okay, I'm back with good news: I have found two remedies for the problem which will hopefully solve it for you as well.
Given that the issue only occurs when certain monitors are connected, I concluded that the root of it must be a bug in the Mac's firmware related to DDC (Display Data Channel) handling, and that the most promising way to address it should be to just disable the DDC.
Workaround #1: If your monitor has BNC connectors, use a VGA to BNC cable.
In this configuration the DDC pins are not connected to the monitor at all. This did indeed fix the problem - my Mac mini booted without a problem with the monitor connected. However, I was not completely satisfied with this solution, because VGA to BNC cables are usually quite heavy and inflexible, and do no go together well with Apple's MDP to VGA adapter and the Mini Displayport/Thunderbolt port which has no locking mechanism.
Workaround #2: Remove pin 12 of the VGA plug.
Pin 12 of the VGA plug connects the serial data line of the DDC. Pulling out this pin with a pair of needle nose pliers will effectively disable DDC. I hesitated to do this to my cable (a direct MDP to VGA cable which eliminates the need for a separate adapter dangling from the Mac) and therefore bought a tiny VGA male to female adapter (also called port saver, e.g. Delock 65250) to perform the surgery on that. This has done the trick and my Mac mini has started up fine ever since.
Of course, without DDC the Mac won't know the model name and capabilities of the attached monitor and thus offer some resolution and frequency settings which the monitor may not support, but that's a small drawback compared to having to pull out the monitor cable everytime you turn on or restart your Mac.

  • Airport Express with ADSL

I bought an Airport Express in China but had to return it since I couldn't figure out how to make it work with ADSL (the connection I have in China) and the manual didn't explain it. To be specific, here's my question: How do you make Airport Express work when I can only get online by plugging the broadband cable into my computer and then inputting a user name and a password? Is this something that the connection from AE to my computer allows me to tell AE to do? The instructions are completely silent on this.
    Thanks.

Thanks for trying to help. I'm afraid I don't understand everything you are saying.
"This sounds like you are trying to use a PPPoE connection which requires a log on to the provider's service using a user name and password. Normally, the user name and password is configured on the modem."
I'm not sure what you mean by "configured on the modem". I have to sign in using my computer. The modem doesn't do it for me. I've never heard of a modem that does this for you. You set this thing up using "Network Connections" in the Control Panel.
"If the modem does not allow this, then the modem must be configured in bridge mode and the PPPoE service set up on the AirPort Express."
I don't know what "bridge mode" means.
"AirPort Utility > Manual Setup > Internet icon > Connect Using = PPPoE
The user name and password are configured on the AirPort Express in this type of connection."
Ah. So apparently it is possible (assuming PPPoE means the kind of connection where you have to sign in with a user name and password using "Network Connections"). That's helpful. Thanks. But (as explained below) I couldn't get Airport Utility to work at all.
"There are two types of connection choices on the setup for the AirPort Express and other AirPort routers; 1) Connect Using Ethernet and 2) Connect Using PPPoE.
Perhaps you missed this selection choice during the setup of the AirPort Express?"
I had the same problem as this guy (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2577804&tstart=15) and couldn't do setup at all. Frankly, the manual is grossly inadequate. It is suited only for installations that go entirely according to plan and nothing goes wrong. It is useless when there is any kind of unexpected event. Thanks for your answers. Maybe I'll try again, using this answer together with the answer to the guy above.

  • Will Hylafax work with speedtouch modem?

I am having trouble getting Hylafax to work with my speedtouch modem. when i run faxaddmodem, it asks for the serial port number but i don't know where to get that info. Does it work with adsl modems at all? Thnx.

Well... I got the AEBS working! but its working thru an old router... For some reason in my ignorance I thought if it cannot lock to the dynamic IP of the modem then would it be able to lock to the static ID of another router?? The answer is yes! Not the idea setup sure! but for the time being I have got the power of the airport extreme and the disk facility and remote printer etc.
Actually it's a pretty crap solution really, but it's bought me some time...
Vodafone said there shouldn't be a problem and it should work, they know of no problems...
I think I'm just gonna send it back and maybe pull the remainder of my hair out..
    Thanks for your help...

I have BT Infinity at home with the BT modem connected to the phone line and then to a BThub which delivers the wif signal. I have purchased an airport extreme to improve wi fi strength if how do I connect up to hub it states connect modem to WAN on back of Airport Extreme.
Instructions do not mention connection to BT Hub and the BT modem has only one output which you dicsonnect from Hub and connect to airport extreme leaving. Once you do this Hub has no signal.
    How do I rectify
    Paul

you can also set up the Airport extreme to extend the wireless by hitting the wireless tab in the airport menu then click the drop down menu to select extend
Apple's "extend" function is a proprietary setting that was designed to only work with other Apple routers.
It would be extremely unlikely that this setting would work with a BT product, or any other manufacturer's product for that matter.
But, I haven't tested this with a BT product...and I suppose anything is possible.
Still, I would be extremely surprised if this worked.
The AirPort Extreme might "join" the BT network if you try this......but the AirPort does not provide any additional wireless signal coverage when it "joins" a wireless network. In fact, it really does nothing when it "joins" a network except enable the USB port.
